1-29-2017. Here for a late lunch. 245. Oh my, one would think it's the only place in town to eat. We waited approx 20 minutes to be seated. Service is great. Did note a sign over the kitchen door say everything was fried in peanut oil. Onion rings for starters. Ok not exceptional. We did receive complimentary hush puppies and tomato relish. We really enjoyed the hush puppies and tomato relish they bring to each table. Their catfish was very good. Breaded and cooked perfectly. Their shrimp are tasty also. We ate here two nights in a row. I was very pleased with the toppings on their baked potato. Most restaurants put a dab on their potatoes. Vernon's put plenty topping on their potato. Very pleased. I didn't give them a 5 because of the condition of their restroom. They were pretty nasty and had no towels in the dispenser which was broken. I'm always leery of restaurants that use a "K" in place of a "C;" it suggests "down home cookin'," as we say in the South. Most of the time these places deliver an inferior product and overcharge to boot. Thankfully, not so with Vernon's. Two in our party ordered the cat--excuse me, kat--fish; the other the crawfish etoufee; we had fried green tomatoes for an appetizer. Service was friendly and the tomatoes made their appearance shortly after we ordered them. They were the real deal--tart with crunchy breading and they weren't overcooked. Then came the entrees. The fish fillets were seasoned, breaded and cooked perfectly. Many restaurants fry them to death and the diner is left with something more resembling shoe leather than fish, something of which Vernon's is not guilty. As to the etoufee, it was pronounced perfect and was gobbled up by a young lady who generally has a small appetite. The accompanying sides were as good as the fish. We ordered to-go, and were extremely disappointed that we didn't get what we ordered. We received watered-down, flavorless mashed potatoes (obviously instant) and green beans (way too soft to be fresh, so they must have come from a can) instead of fries and fried okra. The chicken-fried steak was really good, but it's a shame the sides didn't match the quality of the steak. I doubt we'll go back. read more

We stopped into Vernon's Kuntry Katfish for fried oysters. We were seated and they immediately brought fried hush puppies and pickles. They have ice cold beer in the bottle. I ordered the fried oysters with fries, my husband ordered the appetizer with catfish, fried green tomatoes, and mozzarella sticks. The fried oysters were delicious, the dinner also came with pinto beans and fries. Everything was homemade. My husband had the fried green tomatoes which were awesome, mozzarella sticks, and the catfish had a cornmeal batter. Since I was raised in Appalachia and we had river catfish I thought I would not like the catfish, boy was I wrong. I am a very picky eater and it was some of the best fish I have ever had. After we ate they had homemade banana pudding with the vanilla wafers and homemade whipped topping. Vernon's was so awesome and all the food was homemade and tasted like grandma was cooking in the kitchen. They practiced social distancing and we wore our masks until seated. Everyone sat in groups and those of us who were visiting were seated away from others because we wore our masks inside the restaurant. The restaurant was spotless and I felt very safe there with the pandemic still going on. Recommend for good home cooked food. Very convenient, nice family setting for some excellent food. Waitress and staff we experienced were extremely friendly and attentive. Now for the food - I'll be frank, I'm from Louisiana - I take frying very seriously so when I eat seafood elsewhere, I'm usually underwhelmed ... of course, not at Vernon's! Everything was cooked well and seasoned just right. Back to the art of oil: the fried oysters, shrimp, catfish and French fries all tasted great, fresh as if fried in their own individual oil. The food was delicious and worthy of 5 stars. I was warned before going that I would have a long wait to be seated. There wasn't, but our service was lacking. I wasn't too happy that a couple of tables that were seated after mine ordered and received their drinks before me. I also don't like having to ask for my drink to be refilled. Having to go and ask for my bill after waiting over 10 minutes from the time I finished eating was the reason for the 4 stars. read more

We go to Vernon's once a week at least. Their food is amazing. We ask for Taylor Kennedy always. She's the best waitress there. She remembers our drinks and extra items without asking. Man... I really wanted to like this place. I grew up with my grandma running a diner. I really like the family atmosphere of the restaurant... I just wish the food lived up. We just move to Conroe and our friends took us here saying how great the place was for catfish (my favorite)... unfortunately the catfish was over fried and the sauce sides must be where they loose margin as Tatar sauce and red sauce are served in the smallest of a fast food plastic containers.. appropriate for 'to go' orders but not for dine-in. I will probably go back to try one more time to give Venon's the benefit of the doubt of a one time slip. read more

Went there last night for dinner. Grandma took the kids while we're on vacation and we had date night. After deciding over several different places to go we decided we'd go here. The food was tasty and our waitress was very nice and honestly answered our questions as to quality and taste of different options. We both ordered the 3 piece catfish meal and both got 4 pieces. 3 was plenty and we sadly couldn't finish our forth piece. The jalapeño hush puppies were very tasty but slightly over cooked. The one small soufflé cup of tarter sauce is not enough for 2 pieces let alone 3. The sides were tasty but plain. Some sides were direct from can to stove to table The dining experience was plain to say the least. No atmosphere to speak of. Just a bunch of tables in an 'L' shaped room. It was also very loud, you could hear every conversation in the room. There was another room attached with a sliding door where people and staff went in and out off. Not sure if it's a party room, private dining room or what? I wore shorts and a polo shirt and felt over dressed. It appears a t-shirt and ball cap is the preferred attire. I was really expecting to have a great catfish dinner for Good Friday. My husband and I were tired of cooking at home and decided to venture out to the one place in Conroe/Montgomery that is KNOWN for their catfish. We have been here several (4+) times and each one has varied in service time, food issues and cleanliness. So here's the average from what we have gathered on our last and FINAL trip here: The place was pretty empty for almost 8. We wanted to skirt around the dinner crowd, which we have waited up to an hour to have dinner at 6:30. So, heading up there a little after 7:50 would definitely get us a table with minimal wait time... Yeah, not so much. The place had plenty of empty tables and we still waited 20 minutes to get a table. Why? Still do not know besides the communication between the waitstaff and the hostess was amiss. Cleanliness: When getting to the back room, and sitting down at the table, I almost fell over, tripping on a hush puppy that was not picked up from the previous? guest before us... There was not just one, but 3 of them on the floor, not to mention the amount of just junk on there. Gross! Who seats people when the table cleaning people haven't had time to clean the freaking floor???? There was food on the chairs, which was almost enough for us to walk out, but we just brushed the food onto the floor with the other buffet of food. Food: The catfish, the one and only thing we came for was disgusting. It was the thinnest pieces of fish we have had and man were they rubbery. For a place that prides it's name on "Katfish" they sure do show a funny way of how their signature dish is the best in the area. We shared a 5 piece meal and MAYBE got to eat 3 of them. With all the rubbery and non-edible pieces, it was a complete waste. Service: The poor girl back there was trying to keep up with all 30 people in the back. We had 2 waitresses come and ask if we were being helped? Do they not have assigned tables? It was a bit confusing to say the least. Our waitress was nice and at least smiled when she came by to ask if we needed food. The reason for the low rating is because with a name like "Kuntry Katfish" their catfish was the worst I have had, and that's including fast food chains. The cleanliness of the restaurant was deplorable and we vowed we will never step foot in this filth of a restaurant, again. read more

The fried fish was good but definitely didn't taste like catfish. The shrimp and stuffed crab were frozen and not fresh. Green beans were from can. Cole slaw tasted like it was store bought. Read through all the bad reviews but having a commercial fishing license and cleaning a few hundred catfish a year in Wisconsin, I knew from the pics that the fish appeared to cleaned correctly, which they are, and that's 90% of the battle with even farm raised catfish. So long story short, we gave it a try. Hush puppies and pickled tomatoes were pretty good. Cole slaw saw creamy and sweet which I like. Stuffed Jalapeños were great. Fries needed a little salt but were not mushy nor crunchy.....done just right. The beans were pretty good. The catfish was pretty good. Not my favorite breading for fried catfish BUT like i said before, cleaning the fish so there is no fishy/muddy taste is 90% of the battle. I just put some salt and pepper on it and appreciated it for being a different flavor of fried catfish. Id eat there again. I know this place has been in Conroe forever. I know they sponsor and donate frequently to the community. I know people have ranted and raved about this place for years. I also know that what we had for lunch was not good. My biggest peeve? Imported shrimp. We are fairly close to some really good seafood and yet this place is serving ginormous fried imported shrimp. Blerg. Catfish was thin, dry and not very flavorful. Hush puppies, pinto beans and coleslaw were decent. Oysters weren't overcooked and had a good amount of batter. The French fries were terrible. We strolled into Vernons Kuntry Katfish around three o'clock with a Texas sized appetite for some fresh seafood. Immediately, we were consumed by the aroma of the restaurant and knew we had chosen the best spot to cure our longing for a fresh meal. The atmosphere and overall cleanliness of this business exceeds all expectations. Regardless of who was checking us into the restaurant; seating us, serving our large party, processing our payment, cooking the food, or bussing the tables, we were approached by a lovely smile and felt right at home! After we were seated, my group was so eager to taste some of that home cookin' that we decided to order everything all at once! The complimentary hush puppies were devoured, the appetizers were very flavorful and hot, and the main course was quite delicious! The portion sizes are large, so make sure to bring your eating pants! We were all in agreement that each meal was as satisfying as the last. There is one thing about this seafood restaurant that one must know before entering, every single woman in that building is strikingly divine. This makes it difficult to focus on the food, hold a conversation with the group, pay for your meal, etc. Just the alluring factor that these women carry have you second guessing your actions. Every woman had a charming personality and characteristic about her that created this insatiable feeling that was not easy to overcome. "You have been warned!" This was a great send-off for my traveling buddies who have never experienced Texas before! I'm sure they are still licking their fingers from some of the best food in South Texas! Ive wanted to come here for sooooo long and finally did. I wanted to come for lunch but missed it (ends at 2 pm - what? ) That was definitely a game changer because there was so much on the menu I had wanted to try but there was no way to do that with everything being dinner entree priced at 3 in the afternoon. but we figured it out I did get a taste of the perfectly fried catfish bites - crisp seasoned outside tender hot inside. Homeade tartar sauce- yes Fried oysters- huge meaty and tender Hushpuppies with jalapeños served with tomato relish are so worthy of all the raves. and I don't usually notice the ice tea, but it was so good and constantly being refilled. This place has perfected what they do and the taste and service is top notch for a mom and pop type place that takes pride in what they have done for years. My lunch mates who have been going here since the 80s and it apparently has always delivered, they were surprised by what I guess are big price hikes- I just wish they had a longer lunch Im coming back to try the okra! read more

Vernon's has always a family friendly place that never changes. My oldest is nearly 40 and we went when she was in high school and the place is like a time capsule Service was great, waitresses were very courteous, glasses were always filled and we were always checked on. The food is OK. Unless you order fried catfish or the grilled, food is just alright. The sides are decent, but dinner salads are large and so so. Blue Cheese dressing is good though. We like their Good Pie and it is often sold out. Personally, I like the Lunch Specials best of all. Hot Hushpuppies and Green Tomatoes are brought to you when you are seated. We ate lunch here while on vacation. i thought the Catfish was so-so, the rice and gravy so-so, and the okra just as good as any i've had at good ole Church's Chicken. Truly, the BEST two things about this place were 1) the little fried jalapeno bread balls served with pickled green tomatoes at the beginning of the meal and 2) the service. Just came here a week or so ago with my in-laws. This isn't a place I would have gone to myself, (the whole "K" substitution for "C" thing makes me cringe) but I'm glad they brought me with them! Food was 10/10 - we all got the catfish, mashed potatoes, and green beans and shared a peach cobbler with ice cream. Best cobber I've ever had. It's weird that a recent reviewer said that it was dirty. Stopped here on a weekend girl's getaway. The hushpuppies here are freakin awesome! They aren't sweet (which I prefer), contain onions, and are fried to golden brown deliciousness. The fried okra, catfish, and fried shrimp here are also really good. The service here was also great, the girl that waited on us (Jessica) was really really nice and made sure we had what we needed during our meal. It's catfish, it's good, portions are large. That's about it. I love catfish but I like big, fat, steaming filets, not Cheeto-size too-crunchy strips. Vernon's served nice, chubby filets. Hush puppies come before every meal, as they should. No one should have to pay extra for hush puppies at a catfish place. That's just wrong. These are good ones, golf ball size with just enough jalapeño for a nice heat level. The tartar sauce is spicy, the sweet tea is sweet but I added a packet of sugar to make it a little more hard core. We went on Sunday for lunch so there was a big after church crowd. The wait was a good fifteen minutes and service is very leisurely. We didn't mind but don't be in a hurry. Big onion rings. The potato salad was exceptional, tangy and chunky. The portion was at least the size of a softball. It's the best place for catfish in the Conroe-Woodlands area. Good stuff. read more
