Why 4 stars? Because it was mostly okay but I'm grading on the small business curve. --- --- --- A couple of weeks earlier, my wife sent me Vaqueros as she was researching chicken fried steak (important research), and I told her I actually already had it bookmarked. And then it just so happened that we had something to do in the area coming up, so it was a really easy decision to plan our lunch destination that day. We were tempted to order two chicken fried steaks, since that was apparently the main event here, but just to try something different, I ordered a burger and she ordered the large CFS so there'd be plenty for me to try. But we started off with the mixed basket of fried treats and it hit the spot pretty well. A solid 4-stars here. The chicken fried steak gets 10-stars for its size (photo attached with a cell phone next to it for scale. 4-stars for the quality. Enjoyable, but not, "I absolutely have to go back" level. The double bacon cheeseburger was... fine. My wife commented that it looked like two frozen patties and that seemed pretty accurate. 3-stars. With my burger, I subbed in mac-n-cheese instead of fries. I have to say, this might be the worst mac I've ever had. The first bite I took was lukewarm, at best. But it basically tasted like a flavorless, soggy noodle. I took about 3 bites and just set it aside. 1-star. We finished with some banana pudding and it was an enjoyable finish. With real bananas, even. 4-stars. As I said at the top, I'm probably rounding up for this 4-stars, but we were glad to support a modest, family owned business. read more

Saw this restaurant on social media and drove out to support. The place is small but we had no wait and were waited on by several staff, all very friendly. We ordered and they brought these rolls to the table. I picked it up (still warm) buttered it and took a bite and my next words were "oh sweet Jesus." Best dinner roll i have ever had in my life. And there is real whipped butter on the table (score). My chicken fried steak was good. Tastes fresh and a good portion. Good gravy. The green beans were delicious and the black eyed peas were good. The banana pudding made a good dessert and was a sharing size. Fresh banana slices on the bottom, whip cream on top. A great value overall and if we lived closer we would be regulars. read more

We heard about Vaqueros Grill through friends and wanted to try this place out. We heard they have the best chicken fried steak. Say less! My husband and I arrived late in the evening, there were only other table that was occupied. It looks like a family own business. Services was great and the older gentleman had a conversation with us. He stated, "he like to get to know his customers". We felt right at home dining here. Food: The chicken fried steak was huge. To be honest, my husband and I could have shared one, but my husband does not like to share. To each to our own. For sides, I ordered mash potatoes and mac and cheese. I enjoyed it, and the sauté onion was a twist to the CFS. Appetizer - okra, mushroom, pickles, onion ring and mozzarella stick. Did I mention all fried? My husband enjoyed the appetizer, but for me.. it was a bit much. We enjoyed our meal, nice and quiet. Keep in a mind its kind of a hole in the wall. We discovered Vaquero Grill thanks to a post in a local "Happenings" Facebook group. After waiting a couple of days for the initial rush to calm down, we finally got to try it out tonight. The restaurant was busy with full tables, but we were seated quickly. We started with the Fried Pickle Spears. The batter that was spot on. For my entrée, I ordered the Meatloaf with Corn and Mac 'n Cheese. The meatloaf was excellent, with a nice crunch from vegetables, and I would absolutely order it again. The corn was sweet and crisp, and the Mac 'n Cheese was rich, creamy, just perfectly done. My wife ordered the Chicken Fried Chicken with Green Beans and Squash. The chicken was outstanding, crispy and juicy, and it came with an excellent gravy. Honestly, I could have drunk the gravy straight from the bowl. We finished with Banana Pudding, which was excellent as well. I usually do not care for banana pudding, but I would gladly eat this again. There were fresh banana slices at the bottom and it was topped with crunchy Nilla wafers, added right before serving. To top it all off, the owner Humberto personally came by to check on guests. He is not only an incredibly kind host but also a talented cook. A quick note: because of the recent surge in popularity, some items may sell out and wait times might run a little long. Hands down, the best chicken fried steak I've had in a long time. The batter was absolutely perfect it stuck to the steak flawlessly with not a single air pocket. You can see in the picture how big the "small" steak was, and yes, the batter covered every inch of it. The flavor was incredible from the first bite to the last. The mashed potatoes and green beans were on point, the gravy had amazing flavor, and the roll was simply to die for. If you're a chicken fried steak fan, this one sets the bar high. read more

It wasn't the best Chicken Fried Steak that I've had, but it was good, and reasonably priced.

We went for lunch and the place was absolutely packed. We decided to go back later because it was so packed. That was a good sign to us. Then when we came back, we were seated the waitress was extremely friendly and polite. She was on top of everything checking in. Do we need anything all the things that you want a server to do when you were at a restaurant. I ordered the chicken fried steak small size, it did not disappoint. It had enough breading, but not over and the meat went all the way to the edges. It wasn't just all breading with a little bit of meat inside. The mashed potatoes were extremely fresh and definitely made from scratch. My baked squash had the best flavor. We ordered a sampler platter that had a little bit of everything from cheese sticks to fried okra, onion rings, fried mushrooms, and fried pickles. When the owner came out and introduced himself to us a very quiet, humble older gentleman. He was so welcoming and inviting and told us about some of the specials that they're doing and we will definitely be going back. There's a few items that I really want to try like they have fish tacos that looked amazing. Definitely want to go back and have some more okra. I can guarantee like everything from beginning to end the ambience when you walk in is like a little café and extremely clean everything had a place. I had the Children's Chicken Fried Steak with black eyed peas. The CFS was still too big for me. Black eyes peas were from the can without seasoning was my side dish. Just a little seasoning would have made a difference. The batter on the CFS was good and not over battered. Hubs had Small CFS and he ate half and took the rest home with my left overs and ate it for leftovers the next day. He had mashed potatoes and a salad. He was pleased. This place has good service and the manager checks on with you to make sure you are OK. Restaurant is quaint, but clean. Always busy. read more

Husband and I came here after seeing some Talk of the chicken fried steak, needless to say it did NOT disappoint! We started with the mixed appetizer basket, sorry no photo, but the fried pickle spears really stick out flavor wise and these were the best fried mushrooms I've ever had. Husband got the Large chicken fried steak with black eyed peas and "veg of the day" was a baked potato. He said the CFS was delicious as were the sides, and he was very happy being able to wash it down with a beer. I on the other hand wasn't very hungry so decided to split the "kiddie catfish" with my son, it seemed like a normal sized plate honestly! neither of us finished it still but it was super yummy too especially with some fresh lemon squeezed on. I do want to try other things on the menu, but I dont know if I'd be able to order anything else knowing that the CFS is so good. As my sides I had mashed potatoes and corn. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant, but I'm not mad. I just so happen to like instant potatoes so... it was good. The corn was also really good. Had the perfect seasoning on it. The cream gravy was also really good. Oh... how could I forget... they also serve you yeast rolls with cream gravy on the side while you're waiting on your meal. Seriously love this place. We now go probably 2x/ month. It's our go to on a crazy weeknight when we don't feel like cooking. The drive through makes it very easy. Everything from my first review is still accurate. I also love their chopped steaks and the buffalo chicken tenders. Wish they would do wings more often (I think it's a special sometimes). There are so many choices seafood, steak, chicken, burgers, salads and sandwiches. They bring you the biggest yeast rolls to start off. We all loved them! Everything we ordered was delicious! The chicken fried chicken, creamed gravy, grilled chicken, fried shrimp, fried fish, fried okra, squash was all excellent. The portions were very large for the price point! For our dinner entrees we had the chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken. Both were breaded perfectly with the right amount of breading to meat ratio. Everything we tried was AWESOME! The cook even came out to check on us to make sure we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I highly recommend this place. We can't wait to come back to try more entrees and the fried Oreos!
