I have come to love Vera's. I try to get there once a week to meet with friends. Food is good-whether chosen from the hot bar or from the menu. Portions are large (even the small dinners) and that makes for awesome leftovers. There's plenty of space to sit and you don't feel crowded (being hearing impaired that's a plus) and the service is outstanding. Every waitress takes care of their own tables but also keep an eye on other tables as well. read more

Vera's Diner is an old time diner that could use some refurbishment. We had breakfast and as others have said it can take a while to get food. The sausage gravy biscuit came out promptly but everything else came out over the next 30 minutes and a not full house. The food was good with the highlights being the sausage gravy biscuit and the hash browns. Black coffee was so weak I thought it could be decaf. From the other reviews, dinner is Vera's claim to fame rather than breakfast service. read more

Waited an hour for our food, only 3 plates of 6 showed up, one wasn't even correct, 2 orders didn't get cooked or written down on the ticket, waitresss service was non existent. of the 3 Waitrer/waitresses that did serve us all had the most massive rotten attitudes because we were upset. I Googled restaurants in Vanceboro, NC, this past Saturday night. Vera's Diner came up. I looked over the online menu. Decided to go check it out. So glad I did. I ordered the SMALL oysters, scallops, and shrimp platter. Substituted a garden salad for the baked potato (it was still $2-but that's okay). Cole slaw and hush puppies were included. Oh My Goodness! My first bite of that platter was an oyster. It was like biting into a cloud of estuary heaven. The breading was very light. The oysters were cooked to perfection. The scallops were nearly the size of quarters. Lightly breaded and cooked to perfection... Nice & sweet, melting in your mouth. The shrimp, larger than popcorn/Calabash. But, oh so delicious with a touch of sweetness. These were also lightly dusted with their breading recipe. There was so much remaining, (I didn't finish the salad, slaw, or hush puppies), I had leftovers for dinner the next night. $18.95 is VERY AFFORDABLE for the amount of food you're served. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Next meal I want to try is their breakfast. They're on your way to and from New Bern, NC on Hwy 43, in Vanceboro, NC. I highly recommend it. read more

Veras is your typical southern diner. The fried pork chops are out of this world and my kids love the food. I pass on the devil eggs, they have a weird flavor, but every other side dish I've had has been flavorful. Their sweet tea is excellent. Do not expect them to bring your parties food out together though, we've waited 10 min in between dishes before, but the taste and price have been worth it. read more

We had biscuits with egg and sausage; they were huge and had almost no flavor. Biscuits typically flake. These biscuits were a little "tougher". Well I am 56 years old and have eaten here most of my life until recently when my wife was accused of complaining everything we come here by the owner. When my wife spoke up and said I have never complained u must have me mistaken she said well that's what the waitstaff told me. Well we've never complained but since the waitstaff wants to lie on my wife and walk around looking like they have their buys on their shoulders after 56 years I will never go back. The wait staff is nothing to look at and their attitudes are poor. I was expecting amazing when I went here. I mean it's in the middle of Vanceboro but I at least expected that my food to taste like what I ordered. I went with my parents and one of them got the seafood and the other got the hot hamburger plate. I imagine that these two items are their most popular because they were great. I personally ordered grilled chicken and corn. My grilled chicken tasted my hamburger and my corn had so much pepper in it that I wanted to barf. I also ordered some chili cheese tots just to see how they were and they were also disgusting. They just opened a can of chili and plopped it on top of some tater tots and added some shredded cheese. Honestly if I wanted that I could have made it at home and at least my chicken would have actually tasted like chicken. Won't be going back again. Oh also don't expect your food to come out at the same time. The seafood plate came out first and then the hamburger plate and mine came out last. There was at least 5-10 minute span between each plate coming out and the waitresses didn't give us any warning of when our food was coming out and I honestly felt ignored. I give this one star. I have given them two chances. I went in with some friends expecting a good home cooked meal with southern hospitality. I got the meal, it was... OK to say the least. The hospitality was at the far end of the spectrum; the bad end. I stopped in for lunch to go another time. I went up to the counter and waited patiently to be helped... Nothing, I had to ask for help and when I did, I felt as if I was being an inconvenience as well as rushed by the staff. My chicken salad sandwich left a lot to be desired; Arby's makes a much better one...or even the ones you buy at the gas station. I took my 79 year old mother and two of her friends there for lunch 10/21/14.Basic southern home cooking with ampleservings. The food was delicious and the service was exceptionally good.Mom had the delicious homemade hamburger steak served with creamy delicious gravy, well seasoned garden peas, lusicious mashed potatoes and a buttery flaky biscuit. I had a huge fresh and delicious chef salad.prepared with fresh veggies, hard boiled egg slice, and creamy thousand island dressing on the side(per my request.) one of her friends had the shrimp basket complete with fries. her other friend had one of the specials ( 2 hotdogs all the way with onion rings or fries, She choose the onion rings and raved about how delicious they were. We topped off our meal with slices of their delicious lemon pie. Our waitress was attentive and gave us great service. We will be returning when we are in Vanceboro again. read more

This place brings back fond memories of my childhood, since I grew up about 5 miles outside of Vanceboro and have eaten here quite a few times. I've never really delved into their "dinners" or "plates", though. I've always stuck to just a handful of things: cheeseburgers (all-the-way, of course), shrimp burgers, sausage dogs, french fries, and onion rings.
