Little homestyle dinner in a very small town. We had fried oyster burgers and desserts. We thought the oysters were very good, lightly breaded and not overcooked. The pumpkin sheet cake was delicious. They do take debit but charge a fee.

I Googled restaurants in Vanceboro, NC, this past Saturday night. Vera's Diner came up. I looked over the online menu. Decided to go check it out. So glad I did. I ordered the SMALL oysters, scallops, and shrimp platter. Substituted a garden salad for the baked potato (it was still $2-but that's okay). Cole slaw and hush puppies were included. Oh My Goodness! My first bite of that platter was an oyster. It was like biting into a cloud of estuary heaven. The breading was very light. The oysters were cooked to perfection. The scallops were nearly the size of quarters. Lightly breaded and cooked to perfection... Nice & sweet, melting in your mouth. The shrimp, larger than popcorn/Calabash. But, oh so delicious with a touch of sweetness. These were also lightly dusted with their breading recipe. There was so much remaining, (I didn't finish the salad, slaw, or hush puppies), I had leftovers for dinner the next night. $18.95 is VERY AFFORDABLE for the amount of food you're served. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Next meal I want to try is their breakfast. They're on your way to and from New Bern, NC on Hwy 43, in Vanceboro, NC. I highly recommend it.

This is an authentic small town diner straight out of the 1960's. Great service and friendly people. If you are ever in town you have to stop by for breakfast.

I loved this home grown diner. They had a faster service counter w food hot and ready. It all looked delicious. I decided to order from the menu. We got the fried fish and shrimp. Amazing! We will go again

The food does have any seasoning in it very bland from the buffet, since new owner took over.

Located in a relatively convenient spot from anywhere in the Jacksonville area, the restaurant has lots of room for customers, and so I've often found a table even in some of the traditionally busier times of day. The food and the service are always reliably great. Omelets, pancakes, French toast, and even hash browns (which, in most other diners, along with their fellow traveler in undesirability, grits, are best avoided), are far better than most other diners. A lot of thought, care, and, presumably, serious on-the-job training must go into the food. The efficiency and dependably rigorous quality are not surprising in a military town. If you're visiting from elsewhere, you will be humbled by the atmosphere, at certain times, when the young service members are having meaningful, hushed meals with their beloveds. Thinking of the hard work, brutal training, and potential life-threatening danger that such absurdly young looking people are enduring will make your worries about mice in the garage, smudged eyeglasses, and forgetting your travel pillow feel awfully insignificant and trivial. Unless you're a fleshly flaneur like me, in which case, a travel pillow and a heating blanket, are still pretty nice. Service is fast and just the right amount of attentive and friendly. On my most recent visit, Elaina was particular kind and efficient.

However, I'm glad to say my instincts were completely wrong on this one. My business colleagues told me all the ingredients are locally sourced, and the based of taking diner food and making it a little more modern (without the pretentiousness). The space matches the concept - modern diner. I tried the following: - Daily Bread: Very good. Nothing like freshly bread and butter. - Spaetzle Mac & Cheese: Excellent. I've had spaetzle and and I've had mac & cheese, and this was as good as interpretation of mac & cheese I've ever had. A lot of my colleagues thought this was the most memorable dish of the night. - Pickled Things: Good. I always like trying new things, and pickled blueberries and fried saltines were new to me. Really nice surprises. - Daily NC Catch (Trout): Very good. Trout was just as perfect as can be with a nice crispy sear on the skin, and meat was still tender. The risotto underneath was good, but a bit over-seasoned. Service was incredible. The server was interactive, fun, attentive and doing a masterful job of single-handedly managing a table of over 12 people, which is never easy. Overall, a great meal. Really great food with service that made us feel like restaurant regulars. If I happen to visit Greenville NC again, I would definitely make sure to return.

We started with 1/2 dozen oysters (delicious) and an order of Pickled Things (really large enough for 4). For entrees we had the steak special (perfectly cooked but inexplicably didn't include any accompanying sides) and the fish special that included bouillabaisse in the description but was really a bed of flavored rice (good but a little too much vinegar). Overall tasty food with friendly staff, but I'm not sure I'd seek it out.

Kennedy, our friendly, knowledgeable server, brought out complimentary cornbread with brown butter/molasses butter and tomato soup shooters. Yum. They offer two- and three-course price fix menus, and for a few dollars more, you can make it a wine pairing. My husband did that, and I ordered off of the regular menu. His collard green salad was sensational! He couldn't stop raving about it even as he was finishing it up. His second course was filet mignon, and it was the most savory, tasty filet I've ever had! Their waffles are Belgian-style, which means that they were generally a bit crisper on the outside, and soft on the inside. They are filling, and have solid flavor!
