My wife and I left New Bern on our way home to Havelock. We decided to try Carolina Grill. It was Sunday at 3:35. I know this as I am diabetic and keep an eye on my time for meals. An elderly couple was walking out,I held the door for them. My wife and I went to the receptionist/welcome station. The young lady asked if we wanted a table or booth, we responded a booth. A young male took us to a booth but the menu and set-up on the table and walked away. I said "thank you" and got a comment under his breath that i could not understand. A few minutes went by and a large female comes up to the table and says " I sorry but we're closed. My wife and I were slightly embarrassed by this as we were already seated. Not wanting to be embarrassed anymore we got up to leave. On our way out the large female says to the hostess "who let them in, I already locked the doors.". No problem we drove down to "No Name Pizza". Our server's name was Shawna. She was a doll and very sweet, great service and personality. I gave her a cash tip over 20%. She earned it. Carolina grill 0, No Name 1. Game and match.

This place was very nice. It has kind of the outback feel to it. Ambiance and decor. The waitresses were service was really good. The food was extremely good. The smoke that was on the ahi tuna was just fantastic. Everything that I had on my plate was very well done. My friend had a steak and it was done perfectly. We will definitely be back

Pot Roast, or is it? No veggies.

Let me first convey that the item as described in their menu was good; however what I ate and the item name itself do not go together. A Pot Roast is not just simply meat and nothing else. A Pot Roast is made up of Potatoes, Onion, Carrot and Celery. The roast by itself was very good. I sincerely hope you've learned by this.

First time visit service was excellent. She always came back and check and make sure we were doing OK. $$prizes were reasonable they had different choices from seafood steak wraps. They even had Ruben chicken salad. plenty to choose from there would be something there forEveryone. got a nice beer and wine selection to also go with your meal and of course you can get hot tea or cold tea which is my favorite.

The food is slightly undercooked, the whole experience was violently mid. There is more than cut of steak not just a ribeye

One half feels historic and the other half feels modern with the artwork, mirrors, and finishes. The lighting is dim but you can still read the menu. It wasn't busy while I was there but quiet enough I couldn't hear other conversations. Initially the host wanted to seat me at the bar but when I declined, gave me a seat near the open kitchen. My waitress was friendly and helped me select the strawberry blonde to go with the strawberry salad. This was smaller than expected and just one or two strawberries. There was a little too much dressing for my taste as I forgot to order it on the side. I did like how the flavors came together. I also had the chocolate torte which was rich and decadent. I left here a little squeamish from what I witnessed. After all, I was seated at a booth table with a full view of the open kitchen. I noticed the food runner repeatedly touching his nose then the plates of food. I watched him reset a table and was touching the silverware by the tines, the part that goes in your mouth, rather than the handles. I'm not sure if the hands had been washed when he added by hand garnish to my dessert. I immediately removed the garnish but should have returned the dish to get it remade. Also, a table of six was seated then left a few minutes later and the glasses and silverware were not replaced while I was there, leaving me to assume they were not replaced for the next guests. I also noticed the restaurant had many cameras, so these hygiene lapses were likely recorded. For an upscale spot, these hygiene issues were disappointing. I truly enjoyed the flavors and the atmosphere, and I would be happy to return in the future if I could be confident that basic hygiene and service protocols were being strictly followed. I'd particularly love to come back and try the strawberry cake next time.

We had dinner there again a couple weeks ago and while he didn't get the ribeye he ordered, the ribeye he got was delicious. I got the Chinese-style ribs & slaw special. I almost ordered the duck special but I can make good duck at home. My ribs are hopeless. The server described these ribs as a small plate but I got 9 tasty ribs and the slaw was the perfect acidity to cut the sweet, heavy richness of the ribs. I generally don't care for 5 spice powder; it's usually too cinnamon or too cloves forward but these were perfect. Also, if you've never tried their South African Pudding, do yourself a favor and order it next time. It's like a cold bread pudding a bed of caramel and topped with whipped cream (but last night, it seemed like marshmallow cream). Never a disappointment and glad to have a great steak option in New Bern.

I chose the flank steak and added truffle butter. The meal was good, but not super impressive. Maybe I had higher expectations. The mashed potatoes were heavily salted and I am not salt sensitive. My friend received a complimentary dessert since we were celebrating her 50th birthday and she chose the banana cake. It was honestly not good at all.

This was our first visit, so we were excited to get a water view when seated at our table - it was a bit too blustery to sit outside overlooking the river and massive boats parked alongside the waterfront restaurant. Our server, Brooke, guided us through everything from the cocktail menu to the entrees, effortlessly - she made solid suggestions from the get-go and was a delight to have helping us. Our two-top started off with a classic Persimmons Old Fashioned ($18) cocktail and a pear vodka, habanero and cucumber lime drink called the Bon Voyage ($14). We chose to split the Roasted Beet Salad ($13) as our appetizer and it was certainly large enough for two to share. The spring mix was topped with delicious red and golden beets, flecks of goat cheese and pistachios, as well as a thick fig balsamic. The salad could have easily been a meal topped with an optional protein. The entree menu features most of the coastal classics, including Fish Tacos ($16), a couple of massive burgers and some heavier offerings like Seafood Pasta ($32) and a huge Fried Seafood Platter ($30) We opted for the Tequila Salmon ($32), served over rice pilaf with green beans and a spicy margarita sauce. I ordered the Unicorn Fish ($30), mostly out of curiosity and upon Brooke's suggestion. The latter was an amazingly flakey fish with the taste and texture of grouper. Topped with honey pecans and served over a lemon scallop risotto with asparagus and spinach - certainly the most nicely prepared fish I've had in a very long time. We wrapped up the meal with a couple more cocktails and enjoyed the late afternoon view - the Wake Breaker ($18) drinks feature reposado, bailey's chocolate and a touch of habanero - the perfect end to an amazing meal.

Our server Ridley, came to the table promptly, answered our questions and took our orders. Our drinks came quickly and were always full. The food arrived soon after our orders were placed. The presentation of our meals was terrific. Three diners in our party ordered the Fish Tacos and one got the Fish and Chips. It would be an understatement to say the servings were seriously generous. The fish & chips came 3 large fried fish filets and a heaping of seasoned fries. The taco orders each had 3 full vs mini sized soft tacos overflowing with fish filets...the fish was legit spilling out over both ends of the tacos! The fish was lightly battered, nicely seasoned and fried to perfection. The quantity of the food was so generous, only one of us could finish our meal!! On our way out, we stopped and spoke with the manager Kelsey. She is the spirit behind the "the new and improved" Persimmon's ethos. She took no credit for the changes or improvements and instead placed our exemplary experience squarely at the feet of her employees! It's obvious she's a wonderful, caring leader of the Persimmon's team. Cheers to Kelsey, Ridley and the Persimmon's crew!

They worked well together and made sure we were well taken care of. If you went to a restaurant just for the staff then this would get them five stars. But I don't come just for the staff or ambiance. I come to restaurants for the food and with a limited budget I want value and quality for our money. When we go to a place we haven't tried before I like to try sampler plates or try smaller portions of more items to learn what they are good at. Most BBQ joints have a sampler platter but there wasn't one on the menu. I asked about it and they said it was common to get smaller portions of the proteins as a combo (again not on the menu) but if you do it, doesn't come with the bread or the side even though the price is a bit more. You get to choose three meats. Ok I ordered the sausage, burnt ends, pork belly and a side of fries. The sausage was very good, thank you. The pork belly was a very small portion and fattier than I've had before, sweetened and too salty. The burnt ends were bad, I couldn't even finish them. Perhaps the worst burnt ends I've ever had. Very salty, I mean way too much salt. greasy, truly burnt not just the bark and meat like most burnt ends, and the sauce wasn't very good either. I was really disappointed. The fries were great, I would come here just for those. My wife ordered the turkey pot pie which was small and dry. She asked for some gravy on the side which they promptly got out. She indicated it was very good gravy.
