The owner (Ipock) of this restaurant has a family lineage in New Bern. They've owned several restaurants over the decades with the same "home cooked" type meals that can be eaten by young and old alike. Nothing fancy, nothing overly spicy, just plain good food. Children would especially enjoy some of the selections. The atmosphere and aroma may have a "bar" twinge because some people use it as a bar, so you'll have wet floors in the bathroom sometimes at night. This smell is hard to cover so, you'll have to deal with that, maybe. The selections my wife enjoy most are: the Hot Hamburger Plate, Hamburger Steak (both with onions and mushrooms added to the gravy for $1 extra), Shrimp & Scallops and BBQ Baby Back Ribs. The sides are less impressive, but if you know what to order, you get extract some great veggies. The mashed potatoes are REAL potatoes (not instant) and taste great (don't add salt before eating). The steamed Broccoli is excellent and is the only other vegetable I get with my meals. The Baked Potato is nominal and French fries are frozen crinkle cuts. My wife use to get the baked beans but they were discontinued. I order with my cell phone from my truck on my way home. I go to the back "take out" entrance. There is a camera with closed circuit television that they can see your vehicle with. (I never sit down to eat) Therefore I can't really comment on the service or the sanitary conditions. The place use to have more employees and they had a register w/cashier next to the back entrance. This dedicated position in now usually the responsibility of the head waitress at the bar. Since she is busy serving drinks or doubling as the main check tallying station for other waitresses,...I usually just go inside to pay for the meal rather than wait for her to come out to my truck. If it's gonna be a little while (if it's very busy, wait times can be longer) I'll sit outside and wait. She brings it out cheerfully and I always give a nice 15-20% tip. (even though she didn't really wait on me but once) I find it makes me feel good. The prices are quite reasonable if not a bargain compared to some other places. Expect to pay $10-$14 per plate, but sometimes small plates on special can be under $7. Within the last two years, I've seen the Hot Hamburger Plate be on special for $5.99. Ask for the specials of the day, there are usually two or three. read more

My wife and I left New Bern on our way home to Havelock. We decided to try Carolina Grill. It was Sunday at 3:35. I know this as I am diabetic and keep an eye on my time for meals. An elderly couple was walking out,I held the door for them. My wife and I went to the receptionist/welcome station. The young lady asked if we wanted a table or booth, we responded a booth. A young male took us to a booth but the menu and set-up on the table and walked away. I said "thank you" and got a comment under his breath that i could not understand. A few minutes went by and a large female comes up to the table and says " I sorry but we're closed. My wife and I were slightly embarrassed by this as we were already seated. Not wanting to be embarrassed anymore we got up to leave. On our way out the large female says to the hostess "who let them in, I already locked the doors.". No problem we drove down to "No Name Pizza". Our server's name was Shawna. She was a doll and very sweet, great service and personality. I gave her a cash tip over 20%. She earned it. My wife Kathey and I stopped in to the Carolina Grill in New Bern, NC for dinner. We are out here house hunting and this place was close to our hotel. Kathey chose the fried shrimp with a baked potato and some fried okra. My pick was the special of fried flounder and shrimp, mashed potatoes and green beans. We tried this place once for takeout during covid and found it bland and tasteless but wanted to give them another try to see if it was a fluke. Spoiler: it was not Nothing much, other than what they have on the menu, has changed. I don't know if their kitchen is just inconsistent or if the people giving it high ratings have no taste buds but medieval peasant food utilized more spice. Everything was tasteless from my fried flounder and shrimp to our daughters (insanely expensive for a half inch thick 7oz) ribeye to our other daughters' fettuccines. Everything needed salt at the very least. Everything was technically cooked correctly, very well even, but an old shoe would've had more flavor. The service was slow and painful but I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt because she seemed new. Running around a lot but not really accomplishing anything. All the servers seemed on edge and the older lady taking names at the door seemed... stressed? Scary? Not pleasant at the least. Anyway, we won't be going back. Two overpriced tasteless meals is plenty. Not sure how it stays busy. Must be a lot of tourists, people on low salt diets, or those suffering from Covid loss of taste. My parents, grandmother, aunt, brother, 1-year-old son & I visited for lunch today. While waiting to be seated, my mother asked the hostess if we could be seated in the large corner booth. No answer. Didn't even look at her. My mother politely repeated herself. The hostess mumbled something to the server standing beside her, but still wouldn't acknowledge the question. My mother then spoke up louder to ensure she heard her & the woman replied, "You won't all fit in that booth." My mother let her know that we had sat in the booth before. To which the hostess said, "Just do what you want." Then stormed back to the hostess station. My mother said, "I'm not sure why you're being so rude about a simple request," to which the hostess responded, "I'm just trying to seat people." (*Note: on a previous visit, I asked this same hostess if the restaurant had a carseat sling & she hastily said, "I don't know. Ask your server." So, after holding my son and receiving no assistance, I finally sat my son's carseat on a chair beside me.) The only positive thing I have to say is that our server was extremely kind. Very attentive, respectful. The food was beyond mediocre. The house salad was extremely basic with iceberg lettuce--not "mixed greens" as stated on the menu. My grandmother's chicken & rice soup was nothing more than a bowl of minute rice that soaked up all the liquid, and had pieces of carrots in it. The chili did not taste like it had ground beef in it. The sliced tomato on the Roast Beef & Cheddar was underripe. The food is severely overpriced for the quality provided. Someone needs to do something about the "pit bull" at the hostess station. Today, went out for a late lunch with my sister here. NEVER AGAIN! We were treated so badly we will never spend anymore of our money with these people. They don't care about anything a paying customer complains about. Nothing ever changes. Food at best is cafeteria type nothing more. Chicken fried steak was horrible. Have had good food here before, but not yesterday. Order (sisters) was wrong~~~requested no mashed potatoes or rice. Got potatoes anyways. Seems nobody reads what the waitress writes. Pointed this mistake out to her and she asked did we want her to "scrape" it off the plate? Simple mistake. Understandable. Anyways, about 10 minutes later she is asking us did we want a to-go box, I was still eating and promptly said " can I finish my meal first"....I wasn't rude I simply stated I wasn't finished yet. Well she thought I was being rude to her. Unlike the lady who was dining alone behind us had asked for a to-go box 3 times.... Going to shorten this long boring story, in the end bill was brought out I heals it up to her and she literally snatched it from my hand. This struck me wrong and I complained loudly....not to snatch anything from me especially when I am offering it to you. Once said the manager came over complaining I had been rude to her so she had the right to be rude to me. I couldn't believe What she was saying....if a waitress perceives a customer is being rude to her the she has the right to be rude back. I was flabbergasted! I asked her this is how you train your staff to interact with paying customers? A prompt YES! Was what I got. Anyways was told by this person not to come back ever again. I told her not to worry that if this is how they want to run this restaurant I would never grace their doors again. A promise I intend to keep. I'll spend my $$$ with someone who wants my business. Stopped in for dinner with the family on Labor day Monday. Party of 8. Three got cheeseburgers with fries. Burgers were nice and juicy. One for a shrimp dinner - good. Two got chicken tenders - wasn't bad, but both doubt they will get those again the the future. Two got fish. Tasty and perfectly cooked. Would we come again? For burgers or shrimp or fish - yes. Not what they used to be. Small portions..Grease for the friers is not changed or separated.. French fries should never be cooked in the same frier with seafood! ..many people are allergic to iodine in seafood.( like myself). and it is also a steak house is it not? so seafood should always be prepared separately. All professional food business know this. My carry out order was wrong and my credit card charged for someone else's food. To correct the problem they hastily threw together the correct meal the fries/hamburger steak ( patty) were not cooked .. all the food had a weird taste and my throat swelled up. I didn't want to trow that expensive meal away so I gave it to my dogs even my dogs wouldn't eat it..So My wife and I will never go back!.. they have unsafe cooking practices and server was not exactly friendly. I was so disappointed and sick didn't want to even go back for a refund especially gas prices these days.
