Hush puppies
George D.

Great food and service here at Mayo's. We stopped in for the first time and really enjoyed our meals. After being served the hush puppies before the meal, we then ordered our entrees. So, my wife Kathey chose the lightly breaded fried shrimp with some cabbage and fried okra. My pick was the seafood combo of fried cod and grilled scallops with cabbage and sautéed green beans. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was just as great. So glad we found this place. We certainly will be back again.

Contrary to the other reviewers, I had a pretty darn good experience at Mayo's in their new location on route 55. My mom and I decided to stop and have lunch here on the way out of town yesterday. The new location is part of a very small strip mall with a two door entrance, and has an attractive interior. I ordered a lunch special off their marker-board which was 2 filets of fried catfish, 2 sides (I opted for cole slaw and corn nuggets), hushpuppies, and tea. My mom ordered a fried shrimp salad. My fish was cooked perfectly. Beautiful golden exterior with just a thin layer of breading. The fish on the inside was still perfectly moist and flavorful. The slaw was a bit sweet, but typical of the area, and the corn nuggets were also fried up perfectly and tasted great. For those who don't know, corn nuggets are small balls of cream corn that are battered and fried. The hushpuppies were done just right, and even the tea was on point. Mom had similar good things to say about her salad. I got to try a shrimp and it was plump and juicy, and just like the other food, fried just right. The salad was also a really nice size. Both of our meals were under 10 bucks. We also had no service issues at all. It seems that this place might be rounding into form since the other reviews were published half a year ago. I know I will be back next time i'm in the area, I encourage you to give them a try.

Sadly, a burned baked sweet potato.

We wanted to love it, we really did. And as a matter fact, we did love it when we walked in and saw the fresh clever decor, the bright dining room, the nautical theme done well, the big black and white photographs of North Carolina waterfront and farms on the walls, the booths and dividers made of what appears to be rescued barn wood. We loved the big table with the compass face on it. We even loved the look of the menu, full of respectable down east offerings like fish, chowders, shrimp burgers, oyster burgers and even scallop burgers. Everything was great. And then the food came. Our waitress was okay, kind of typical for the area. What was a bit disturbing was that the meal was delivered by a dangerously skinny older woman who emerged from the kitchen wearing a filthy apron and practically bending under the weight of our dishes. Honestly, I'd rather be served by my waitress, and not be exposed to the frazzled, sweating, undernourished cook in her stained kitchen garb. Let's be real: when you order broiled trout and you get a fairly tasty whitefish, you're not going to raise a scandal. Heck, the whitefish was good! It just. Wasn't. Trout. My baked sweet potato (hard to mess that one up) was burned in places. I liked my hot tea in its pretty ceramic cup (they've really *styled* the place well!), and my husband's sweet tea was, he said, "in the middle"--not too sweet, but not the best quality tea, probably not brewed--okay. The complementary corn fritters were average. The worst thing on the table was the down east clam chowder. Now, we understand that in this area of North Carolina, clam chowder is different, and not the red northeast type nor the milky type: it's more of a gray broth, not creamy at all, and is supposed to be packed with onion, potatoes, old bay seasoning, parsley, clams and--TASTE! This down east chowder was easily the most disturbingly tasteless brew I've ever had the displeasure to put in my mouth, more like dishwater than a soup. We told the waitress we couldn't eat it, and she obligingly took it off our bill. What to say? The ambience is terrific...like Charley's but up a good number of notches. Our question: why can't the food match the decor? They need to get someone else in the kitchen, at least for lunch when we went there. We will try it again, hoping against hope that this was just a bad day at Mayo's.

Shrimp Burger with Fried Okra and Hush Puppies

I eat Mayos faithfully once a week. There hush puppies are amazing and the Shrimp Burger is to die for. Their Shrimp are alway big and plump. I call in my orders because it's quicker. Their sweet tea is the best in the county.

We've never had a bad experience. Our favorites are the crab dip, Texas burger and hot hamburger plate.

The fried shrimp were out of this world! Scallops were good, too. I liked the fried scallops better than the sautéd. (I ordered both.)

Three to four stars is an accurate ratting for Charlies…read more Popped in on the way to visit family in the area and after eating Waffle House for dinner I needed something light to fill the stomach for breakfast. Stopped in at the right time as shortly after multiple families came in. Definitely can see this being a busy spot pre/post church. Was a little surprised about the lemon juice packets for my water, first I have seen that. I enjoyed my meal. Everything hit the spot with my order. My grandfather's poached eggs were overcooked but he enjoyed it all. Other things that stuck out was they had no OJ, overheard the waitress tell a young boy they were out of apple juice, and they were not serving french toast. Maybe staffing issues with it being Labor Day weekend but I would have thought having a fully stocked kitchen would be important. If traveling through I would pop in for some grub, it is better than the Mc. Donalds up the road.

The FOOD oh my god my $20 plate came out with 4 soggy cold fried oysters and 5 rubbery weird tasting scallops. There was no seasoning on anything it's like everything was microwaved. Food took 45 minutes to come out and there was only 3 people tables in the restaurant. My food tasted like it came out of the bus tray, I'd rather eat out of the foodlion dumpster honestly. Heard the restaurant was great 3 or 4 years ago but now it's horrible. Would not recommend this place to anyone that's ever ate decent food in their life, wouldn't feed my worst enemy this food.

Our Airbnb host recommended this place, and a quick yelp check solidified our plans…read more We got there a few minutes before the opened. It was about 90 degrees out and we were hot and tired. Chelsea greeted us and welcomed us in. Full disclosure. I had a cold, and was not feeling my best. Somehow, Chelsea made me feel like she would make sure I got what I needed. From bringing extra wasabi, to creating an appetizer that wasn't on the menu, she and the kitchen staff made us feel special. Hubby had the steak, 10/10. Same with the fried oysters. I had the tuna tataki, and with the extra wasabi I could finally breathe lol. My daughter had the chowder and a crab cake. She wasn't feeling well either but the chowder was so good she took it to go. Highly recommend if you're near Oriental NC.

I ordered a clam chowder and a burger w/ sweet potato fries. As someone who lives in New England I am happy to say this is a delicious chowder. To my liking; a thick broth and the right amount of fixings of clams, potatoes, and other ingredients. I would recommend not using the saltine crackers, not needed. Ordered my burger rare and it came out as I ordered it. Sweet potato fries were good too. We ordered a key lime pie for the table and was very good! For one of two restaurants in town I would recommend making reservations to be on the safe side.

I stood at the host counter for 5 minutes before a family came in behind me. I could hear voices from the kitchen but no one came into the dining room. So we went back and stuck our heads into the kitchen and shouted, "Hello?" Eventually someone came out and they didn't look pleased to see us. So that's what kicked off my Gary's experience. There was one server taking care of the growing number of patrons. She brought a menu on one trip. Then she brough out hot hushpuppies with butter first (very tasty). Then brought my drink. Then took my order. Lots of visits that I felt could be condensed. All while getting a cold feeling for sticking my head in the back. I started with the she crab soup. It was a beautiful creamy pink color and had lots of crab lumps in it. Unfortunately, it was flavorless and watery. Really disappointing. The hot dogs were better but not great. The toppings were good, the weiner itself was good. The buns were the problem. They had cole slaw..."juice?" dripping down the sides. I don't mind a messy hot dog but having to wipe my hands after each bite got to be annoying. Overall, just not a great visit to Gary's.
