While staying with friends in New Bern, I picked up a family meal for us. We definitely loved the food. Now when I compare the barbecue pork to some of the local places I've tried now, I'd call this pretty good where the others were great. But for a small chain place, it definitely was decent quality and surpassed my expectations. The red sauce worked well with it. I personally prefer the bolder tomato-based sauces so I was quite happy. But where they won me was the fried chicken. If anyone here remembers Roy Rogers fried chicken, that's what it reminded me of. Believe me when I say that in my mind that's a very favorable comparison. And to think when I came down here I was looking forward to having Bojangles again. But having Smithfield's made me completely forget about Bojangles. And when I get back to this area, Bojangles might not make my list of must haves anymore. I ordered the large bar-b-q pork platter, but it was dehydrated meat. Typically, if it is a good bar-b-q or smoked meat, I tend to avoid overloading it with sauce. I'm probably in the minority, but I want to be able to enjoy the smoke flavor, but this wasn't the case. Also, I was not a fan of their vinegar bar-b-q sauce or their red sauce. While it might be a eastern Carolina thing, it's definitely was not my thing. Next, your side options are hushpuppies, French fries, Brunswick stew, baked beans, coleslaw, and potato salad. I chose the baked beans and hushpuppies. I wish they offered fried okra, which I thought was a southern dish, but maybe I have to go to South Carolina for it. I had a BBQ sandwich with slaw, fries and a Coke today. The BBQ sandwich was fresh, warm, and tasty. The Coke was refreshing. The only thing I would change about Smithfield's is their fries. I wish they had crinkle cut fries, or at least larger cut fries. Stood at the register a few minutes before getting acknowledged. My family of 8 looks forward to our stop here on our way from PA to Topsail Island NC every year! Going on our 38th year and our 10th year stopping at smithfields! The service is outstanding and everyone is always so polite (even when they see my 4 teenagers walk in) the food is great and we always grab an extra large sweet tea for the road! True southern sweet tea! Having lived in the south most of my life I always enjoy my kids seeing the southern hospitality here that we dont get up north! So tonight I decided to feed my family from Smithfield's. I don't usually go out to eat here just due to the price increase which I totally understand. But the cashier really was impressive. She took really good care of us and greeted me with a smile. Even after I was waiting on my food I watched how she enters red with other patrons and she really takes pride in her job.
