I dined for lunch at Cypress Hall in Downtown New Bern. The decor is great. I liked the exposed brick and high ceilings in the historic building. It also feels modern. One half feels historic and the other half feels modern with the artwork, mirrors, and finishes. The lighting is dim but you can still read the menu. It wasn't busy while I was there but quiet enough I couldn't hear other conversations. Initially the host wanted to seat me at the bar but when I declined, gave me a seat near the open kitchen. My waitress was friendly and helped me select the strawberry blonde to go with the strawberry salad. This was smaller than expected and just one or two strawberries. There was a little too much dressing for my taste as I forgot to order it on the side. I did like how the flavors came together. I also had the chocolate torte which was rich and decadent. I left here a little squeamish from what I witnessed. After all, I was seated at a booth table with a full view of the open kitchen. I noticed the food runner repeatedly touching his nose then the plates of food. I watched him reset a table and was touching the silverware by the tines, the part that goes in your mouth, rather than the handles. I'm not sure if the hands had been washed when he added by hand garnish to my dessert. I immediately removed the garnish but should have returned the dish to get it remade. Also, a table of six was seated then left a few minutes later and the glasses and silverware were not replaced while I was there, leaving me to assume they were not replaced for the next guests. I also noticed the restaurant had many cameras, so these hygiene lapses were likely recorded. For an upscale spot, these hygiene issues were disappointing. I truly enjoyed the flavors and the atmosphere, and I would be happy to return in the future if I could be confident that basic hygiene and service protocols were being strictly followed. I'd particularly love to come back and try the strawberry cake next time. read more

Firstly, I want to commend their service... our waiter was super kind and attentive, and all the staff were continuously refilling our waters. Also, the ambiance was fun and romantic. Relatively dark and fancy inside, but more than light enough to read menus and have good convo. For one of the most highly talked about restaurants in New Bern, I was hoping for more impressive taste though. My partner and I got the half dozen oyster special, pamlico curry, and the duck pastrami pizza. It came out pretty quick and looked great (they even split our meal without us specifying and without up charge when they confirmed we were sharing), but just tasted decent. For the oysters, I would've preferred their vinaigrette on the side. Also think a classic mignonette is a bit better. The curry takes a creative but underwhelming spin on shrimp and grits. Lastly, the pizza was pretty good but could've used some more duck. To be fair, we may have just not ordered the right foods, but we weren't very impressed by the drinks either. However, based on the service and other great reviews, we will be back to try their other stuff! read more

Bestie & I specifically came to New Bern to geocache & I had 2 places in mind for lunch and luckily for us, the other spot was closed. I say luckily because the brisket burger we both had has to be one of the best tasting, and juicy, burgers I've ever had. The truffle fries arrived hot and delectable. What makes this burger special is I do not care for any pink in my burger and most folks will testify it drains all the flavor and juices out of the burger. That was NOT the case here. I requested the 257 sauce be OTS & replaced with mayo. Julie asked if it would be ok if the mayo came out in a ramekin, which I said would be fine. Most times a server won't take that extra time to ask that & Julie got extra points for that. Prior to our burgers I ordered the ham & herb focaccia & it arrived hot, crispy on the outside but soft and pillowy, like lying on an edible down comforter. The vinaigrette that accompanied the bread was a delightful dip, sweet & tart at the same time. To finish our lunch off we had bread pudding. Y'all, if you're ever on the fence about having it after a full meal, get it. The bread was so light it was unexpected. I made sure to leave room for dessert & because the bread was so light, I ate almost my entire half. The vive here was low key but classy. We were in the side dining room with only a few other diners & it was like being in your own living room. Julie was one of the best servers ever. Attentive but not hovering. Always there to refill our waters without asking, personable and friendly but respectful and as she handed my card back she pronounced my last name correctly. She gets extra points for that as it doesn't happen often. All in all, I would come back to New Bern just to dine here. We didn't have a reservation but we're warmly welcomed by the hosts who also made a recommendation to save room for their famous strawberry cake and pecan pie cheesecake. We LOVE good food and typically never leave room for dessert but decided to break tradition tonight. And boy are we thankful we did. We shared the small plate pumpkin + endive salad which was a great combination of flavors. Next we shared a Bianco pizza. I've had a lot of brick oven pizzas in my time and this was definitely in the top two if not the top one. The crust was crisp and light. The balance of flavors was amazing. Get one, you won't regret it. Finally, the dessert came. We were pretty full from dinner but ordered both. We're so thankful we broke tradition tonight. The strawberry cake is moist, cold, and full of delicious strawberry fruit flavor. The cheesecake was dense with a healthy helping of pecans. The crust was epic. I love the feel of this place! It feels way more cosmopolitan than anywhere else you can find in New Bern. It definitely should be on your list to go visit the bar, if nothing else. Delicious cocktails that are served quickly. Speaking of service, I was impressed that they actually asked about food allergies and took your answers very seriously. That hardly ever happens. You can follow keto very easily here and not the same boring route. Pigskin chips and hot pimentcheeze were delicious. If you aren't going the high protein route, you may be looking for a few more options to choose from on the menu. I know I was looking! I would say it is more like a $$$ type of place than a $$. I was doing some solo traveling and stayed at a great place (The Harvey) in New Bern to visit some friends. We had a late lunch but by the evening I was looking to get a little bite of food, and a glass of wine. I found Cypress Hall had good reviews and a nice size bar with ample seating. I felt really comfortable being there on my own. My server was Trent and he was super nice, friendly and helpful. I had the small plate of Gnudi Cacio e Pepe which was delicious and some very nice white wine. Trent told me it wasn't a full pour and was going to find if there was another bottle. If not, he'd give me a small discount. So nice and honest of him. I'm more of a chocolate fan, but the strawberry cake seemed to be a favorite so tried it - super moist, tasty and whip cream frosting a nice addition. Also, I needed a bottle of water to take back to my hotel room and nothing was open selling water. When I mentioned it to Trent he solved the problem selling me a bottle of the restaurant Avant water. All in all an excellent experience! read more

The atmosphere is pretty laid back chic. There's lots of low tone earthy lighting. There enough ceiling that lots of conversion doesn't create a cacophonous echo chamber. I tried the catfish and the collard green side dish. The catfish was light and caught the flavor of the surrounding juices well. The collard greens were the right balance of vinegary. I talked to a older couple next to me, so the clientele seems friendly enough. The verdict is out on the staff though. The food came promptly. Everything seems professional, but just that. No personalities to go out of my way to revisit. Edit: Chris M was bartender the second night. Constant checks to see if everyone is enjoying their experience. The second night I tried the Sea Bass special he suggested. Very flavorful for the opposite reason of the catfish. The bass itself carried a lot of seasoning, and the accompanying sides served a backup singers providing the slight notes to accent the fish's dynamic flavor. This time I stuck around for dessert: creme brulee with pistachio flavoring. The base taste is the traditional flavor, and the pistachio is a very subtle after taste. Quite good. I only give 5s to establishments I would feel compelled to revisit. The second visit makes move this from a 4 to a 5. read more

The Pomme Frites were a must! So glad we ordered them - most restaurants put a dusting of herbs and parm on the top, but not these. The flavor was layered up until the last French fry was completed. Delicious! Writing this review I want to go back and order them again! Did not even need a dipping sauce, which we asked for and never used. We also ordered the jambalaya which was recently added back on the menu. Kept a critical eater extremely happy with full of flavor. Also ordered raw oysters with a vinaigrette topping. Not my favorite. A little spicy and had a crunch- I also like to add my own flavors on oysters. They had another oyster option with crème fraiche and caviar which I should have ordered. Ordered a French 75 which was on point. Cocktail list looked carefully curated. TV at the bar was extremely high, I would lower that a shelf or two. This is a cool spot in downtown New Bern. We arrived around 3pm on a Friday and they had their "small menu" in between lunch and dinner. They have a fully stocked bar and their bartenders are definitely mixologists, not just drink slingers. Every drink they made was beautifully presented with exceptional detail. My husband had the "New Old Fashioned" and he said it was the best Old Fashioned he's ever had. Everyone was ordering the pimento cheese with homemade pork rinds so we tried them. The Red Pipian offered delicious flavors with shrimp, mussels and fish. The portion is small, if you don't eat the accompanying rice. The pork cheeks and grits absolutely stole the show for me! Well this was a complete surprise in New Bern! An amazingly cool, hip place in the middle of downtown, super nice vibe, great interior, very current, kinda dark just so you know! Amazing menu, fabulous bar, and some of the best service we've had in a long while. Hats off to our server Hayley, she was super attentive, very knowledgeable and asked us about allergies and went out of her way to describe cooking processes so our friend who had allergies was fully aware of how things are cooked here. Never had anyone be so detailed. Plus she was on the ball with drinks and Just covered everything perfectly. Thank you Hayley! Much bigger than you'd think inside, the bar has a great seating area, and they have the wonderful garage door at the front which I assume gets opened during the warmer days for a great open seating area upfront. The bar has a great stock of everything. They had a fabulous drink menu, and a great wine list too. We were seated in the back area, with nice minimalistic decor, away from the noise of the bar, menus were already on the tables, and water was poured straight away. I chose a strawberry blonde cocktail and my friend did too, also a Tito's and soda for our other friend. Loved my drink! Pretty pink, vodka, Aperol, lemon, lavender bitters and Prosecco. Great presentation. Nice, not sweet drink, with lots of fruity tones. Recommend this! Got the hand cut fries as an app, as I was feeling some carbs. They defeat, fresh cut, straight out of the fryer, crunchy, and well salted. Delish. I ordered the tuna tartare pizza, I know very unusual! Just had to try it. Amazing crust, thin and crispy, so no sauce on this pizza but just olive oil, lots of tuna, cucumber, radish and Jalapeño and a great siracha aioli drizzled all over. This was a completely different kinda pizza but so good, just different, but the toppings worked so well together, definitely for the spicy eaters though. I loved this. This was also huge so completely shareable. My friend had the Bianca pizza and said that was really good too, just a lot of mushrooms! Garlic, goat cheese and herbs. Very filling! Also we had the seared tuna entree on the table, comes with root vegetables, bok Choi, yuzu and lime, peanut miso and oyster mushrooms, very picture worthy dish! Also great pieces of tuna, seared just right, great combination of favors , extremely well put together. Another great choice! I got a espresso martini after, and it was also very picturesque, well made, lots of espresso! Then the English tea cheesecake got a huge thumbs up, with citrus, honey and ginger, honestly I didn't taste much citrus and ginger, but it was a very good light cheesecake and I loved the unusual shortbread crust. The honey was a nice touch too. Great end to a great meal. This was by far the best I've eaten in new Bern. So glad to have discovered it, and I can't wait to go back and try the other great sounding dishes. High on my recommendation list for this area. read more

So I walked around the downtown area and saw this cute spot with an open air concept (you can sit at the window overlooking the street) that leads into a long brick corridor/restaurant. Took a look at the menu and it was stacked -- I knew I had options I just couldn't decide what I was even going to get. I sat at the bar and the bartender was extremely friendly. I decided on a drink and enjoyed that while I contemplated all the options. After much discussion with the bartender and my family to pick my my entree and went with the brussel sprout Caesar & the seafood stew with focaccia. I was sad to only have gotten one piece of bread. Without a doubt the best restaurant in New Bern - loved by locals and tourists alike. This restaurant is beautiful. You can sit at the bar, in the back room, or upstairs and have an amazing view. Truly, there isn't one bad table. After eating here three times, I have loved every dish I've had. Most recently, I had the butternut and apple pizza. It was fantastic. Our waitress was so kind and gave great recommendations. Similarly, the drink menu is so creative and interesting. The bar tenders are really good at what they do.
