We were a party of 4 with a reservation and were seated immediately upon arrival. The table/booth was tight but we made it work. We were in no rush and our waiter (Beckett) was very accommodating with our pace. we ordered drinks and settled in on reviewing the small menu. Drinks were fine but I thought my beer (Sexy Cool Hazy IPA) was a little flat. We asked if there were any appetizers that would lend themselves to sharing. The only two, deviled eggs and pimento cheese, were not anything we were interested in so we passed. Surprisingly, there was not even a salad option as a starter. Two of the dinners had the NC catch of the day, golden tilefish. It was nice but a very small portion. One had the shrimp and clam purloo. It was a generous portion and was reported to be good. I had the braised pork cheeks. They tasted good and were not fatty at all. Looking back on our dinner, the food was fine but nothing exceptional. Also nothing "fresh" on the menu; salad, fresh vegetables, nothing. Also the lack of something other than the very pedestrian offers to share is something to consider. For what we paid, I would expect much better. PS - Our waiter, Beckett, was very good. Attentive enough but not too much. Also, why do restaurants of this caliber charge more for a credit card. Who is going to pay cash for a $300 meal? Just crank it into the price of the food and stop rubbing our noses in your cost to do business. read more

That singular taste was tasty, but not as impressive was before. The service was good. I sat at the bar, and the food arrive on time. I like the vibe of this place. I dined for lunch at Cypress Hall in Downtown New Bern. The decor is great. I liked the exposed brick and high ceilings in the historic building. It also feels modern. One half feels historic and the other half feels modern with the artwork, mirrors, and finishes. The lighting is dim but you can still read the menu. It wasn't busy while I was there but quiet enough I couldn't hear other conversations. Initially the host wanted to seat me at the bar but when I declined, gave me a seat near the open kitchen. My waitress was friendly and helped me select the strawberry blonde to go with the strawberry salad. This was smaller than expected and just one or two strawberries. There was a little too much dressing for my taste as I forgot to order it on the side. I did like how the flavors came together. I also had the chocolate torte which was rich and decadent. I left here a little squeamish from what I witnessed. After all, I was seated at a booth table with a full view of the open kitchen. I noticed the food runner repeatedly touching his nose then the plates of food. I watched him reset a table and was touching the silverware by the tines, the part that goes in your mouth, rather than the handles. I'm not sure if the hands had been washed when he added by hand garnish to my dessert. I immediately removed the garnish but should have returned the dish to get it remade. Also, a table of six was seated then left a few minutes later and the glasses and silverware were not replaced while I was there, leaving me to assume they were not replaced for the next guests. I also noticed the restaurant had many cameras, so these hygiene lapses were likely recorded. For an upscale spot, these hygiene issues were disappointing. I truly enjoyed the flavors and the atmosphere, and I would be happy to return in the future if I could be confident that basic hygiene and service protocols were being strictly followed. Yikes. This place is incredible when it comes to service and drinks! But they have done away with the best parts of the menus. No more AMAZING fried oysters, no more gundi. Just some oysters doused in vinegar and shallots and some meaty dishes. These are the things that used to set them apart and make it worth the price, the new menu is bland. Firstly, I want to commend their service... our waiter was super kind and attentive, and all the staff were continuously refilling our waters. Also, the ambiance was fun and romantic. Relatively dark and fancy inside, but more than light enough to read menus and have good convo. For one of the most highly talked about restaurants in New Bern, I was hoping for more impressive taste though. My partner and I got the half dozen oyster special, pamlico curry, and the duck pastrami pizza. It came out pretty quick and looked great (they even split our meal without us specifying and without up charge when they confirmed we were sharing), but just tasted decent. For the oysters, I would've preferred their vinaigrette on the side. Also think a classic mignonette is a bit better. The curry takes a creative but underwhelming spin on shrimp and grits. Lastly, the pizza was pretty good but could've used some more duck. To be fair, we may have just not ordered the right foods, but we weren't very impressed by the drinks either. However, based on the service and other great reviews, we will be back to try their other stuff! read more

Bestie & I specifically came to New Bern to geocache & I had 2 places in mind for lunch and luckily for us, the other spot was closed. I say luckily because the brisket burger we both had has to be one of the best tasting, and juicy, burgers I've ever had. The truffle fries arrived hot and delectable. What makes this burger special is I do not care for any pink in my burger and most folks will testify it drains all the flavor and juices out of the burger. That was NOT the case here. I requested the 257 sauce be OTS & replaced with mayo. Julie asked if it would be ok if the mayo came out in a ramekin, which I said would be fine. Most times a server won't take that extra time to ask that & Julie got extra points for that. Prior to our burgers I ordered the ham & herb focaccia & it arrived hot, crispy on the outside but soft and pillowy, like lying on an edible down comforter. The vinaigrette that accompanied the bread was a delightful dip, sweet & tart at the same time. To finish our lunch off we had bread pudding. Y'all, if you're ever on the fence about having it after a full meal, get it. The bread was so light it was unexpected. I made sure to leave room for dessert & because the bread was so light, I ate almost my entire half. The vive here was low key but classy. We were in the side dining room with only a few other diners & it was like being in your own living room. Julie was one of the best servers ever. Attentive but not hovering. Always there to refill our waters without asking, personable and friendly but respectful and as she handed my card back she pronounced my last name correctly. She gets extra points for that as it doesn't happen often. All in all, I would come back to New Bern just to dine here. Wow. Great dinner. Great service. Before I forget Samantha was awesome. Charming and informative. Did not hover but provided excellent service. Appetizers both oysters. Rockefeller and Raw. Both were excellent. Well seasoned and fresh. Entrees I had the striped bass. Husband had the swordfish. Every bite was perfect. Great flavors. We didn't have a reservation but we're warmly welcomed by the hosts who also made a recommendation to save room for their famous strawberry cake and pecan pie cheesecake. We LOVE good food and typically never leave room for dessert but decided to break tradition tonight. And boy are we thankful we did. We shared the small plate pumpkin + endive salad which was a great combination of flavors. Next we shared a Bianco pizza. I've had a lot of brick oven pizzas in my time and this was definitely in the top two if not the top one. The crust was crisp and light. The balance of flavors was amazing. Get one, you won't regret it. Finally, the dessert came. We were pretty full from dinner but ordered both. We're so thankful we broke tradition tonight. The strawberry cake is moist, cold, and full of delicious strawberry fruit flavor. The cheesecake was dense with a healthy helping of pecans. The crust was epic. I love the feel of this place! It feels way more cosmopolitan than anywhere else you can find in New Bern. It definitely should be on your list to go visit the bar, if nothing else. Delicious cocktails that are served quickly. Speaking of service, I was impressed that they actually asked about food allergies and took your answers very seriously. That hardly ever happens. You can follow keto very easily here and not the same boring route. Pigskin chips and hot pimentcheeze were delicious. If you aren't going the high protein route, you may be looking for a few more options to choose from on the menu. I know I was looking! I would say it is more like a $$$ type of place than a $$. I was doing some solo traveling and stayed at a great place (The Harvey) in New Bern to visit some friends. We had a late lunch but by the evening I was looking to get a little bite of food, and a glass of wine. I found Cypress Hall had good reviews and a nice size bar with ample seating. I felt really comfortable being there on my own. My server was Trent and he was super nice, friendly and helpful. I had the small plate of Gnudi Cacio e Pepe which was delicious and some very nice white wine. Trent told me it wasn't a full pour and was going to find if there was another bottle. If not, he'd give me a small discount. So nice and honest of him. I'm more of a chocolate fan, but the strawberry cake seemed to be a favorite so tried it - super moist, tasty and whip cream frosting a nice addition. Also, I needed a bottle of water to take back to my hotel room and nothing was open selling water. When I mentioned it to Trent he solved the problem selling me a bottle of the restaurant Avant water. All in all an excellent experience! read more

Space feels like an event hall as soon as you walk in. Dinner feel is romantic and modern with exposed brick and tall ceiling' - perfect lighting. Restrooms were clean and up kept. The Pomme Frites were a must! So glad we ordered them - most restaurants put a dusting of herbs and parm on the top, but not these. The flavor was layered up until the last French fry was completed. Delicious! Writing this review I want to go back and order them again! Did not even need a dipping sauce, which we asked for and never used. We also ordered the jambalaya which was recently added back on the menu. Kept a critical eater extremely happy with full of flavor. Also ordered raw oysters with a vinaigrette topping. Not my favorite. A little spicy and had a crunch- I also like to add my own flavors on oysters. They had another oyster option with crème fraiche and caviar which I should have ordered. Ordered a French 75 which was on point. Cocktail list looked carefully curated. TV at the bar was extremely high, I would lower that a shelf or two. Best Restaurant in New Bern by far. Aug 10th birthday dinner with friends from apps to desert 6 stars all the way. We had a hiccup in service initially called a waitress over she was very apologetic and took our orders immediately. Then the manager came over and apologized and then comped us 4 appetizers and 4 deserts. This is a cool spot in downtown New Bern. We arrived around 3pm on a Friday and they had their "small menu" in between lunch and dinner. They have a fully stocked bar and their bartenders are definitely mixologists, not just drink slingers. Every drink they made was beautifully presented with exceptional detail. My husband had the "New Old Fashioned" and he said it was the best Old Fashioned he's ever had. Everyone was ordering the pimento cheese with homemade pork rinds so we tried them. Took a look at the menu and it was stacked -- I knew I had options I just couldn't decide what I was even going to get. I sat at the bar and the bartender was extremely friendly. I decided on a drink and enjoyed that while I contemplated all the options. After much discussion with the bartender and my family to pick my my entree and went with the brussel sprout Caesar & the seafood stew with focaccia. I was sad to only have gotten one piece of bread. This place is a gem. With indoor seating that has an outdoor flare --especially if seated facing the large open window, it is perfect for people watching, taking in fresh air and enjoying the view. The service is solid and attentive. There was not a long wait and though tables were full, bar and window seating is first come first served. The food is really good. I ordered two entrees. The Red Pipian offered delicious flavors with shrimp, mussels and fish. The portion is small, if you don't eat the accompanying rice. The pork cheeks and grits absolutely stole the show for me!
