Five stars for the ambience, four stars for the drinks, three stars for the food. Service was good. We strolled in at about 4:45 hoping to get some apps and drinks. The kitchen only opens at 5 PM so we had to wait a little bit for food which was fine.

The vibe is perfect and the place is so unique. There is live music but it isn't so loud that you aren't able to carry on a conversation. We sat at the bar and the service was great. The cocktails are superb! If you don't know what you want, ask them; she picked out the perfect one for me. The Tater Crabs were perfect!!! A must have if you like crab. The rest of the meal was okay. Next time, we'll grab a cocktail and eat elsewhere. It's also expensive!

Go for the drinks and ambiance, skip the food! We got mocktails, which were delicious and special- mine actually had meringue on top and tasted like key lime pie! There was live piano music which was fun to listen to, while also not being too loud because the piano player was kind of isolated on the other side of the room. The food was...not great. Mostly lacking in vegetables, and everything had cheese. We got the ceviche because we were at the coast....but it was mostly pineapple and served with some sad, stale crackers that we didn't even finish. We also got the smokehouse Mac and cheese...should have been labeled "stouffers Mac and cheese." Service was excellent- nice host and nice server who helped us decide which mocktails to get. Also, they clearly hire for the eye candy...

Great place to get a drink and relax in an eclectic atmosphere ...service and food done well! We will return!

Beautiful inside this time of the year with all the Holiday decorations, great for drinks and appetizers BUT the menu is limited. They have a stage for music, will have to go back when the band is playing for drinks.

    Many accolades for this restaurant

We really enjoyed this restaurant and I admired what looked like a very smart business plan that should keep them around! The money is in the booze and they get that! The drink menu was far more extensive than the dinner menu and featured very unique cocktails. They were fun,but be prepared to pay $15 and up for the experience. Your entree will be close to that same price. Their menu stuck to the foods that everyone wants when out for a good time Foods like burgers, fish and chips, tacos, steak. As my husband remarked," There is nothing on this menu I wouldn't want to eat!" Tried and true favorites that don't require a huge inventory for the business plan. Far less entrees than drinks from which to choose. Small plates allowed their James Beard credentials to shine. Very creative choices that were delicious! We got a great dessert to go, because we were too full! Simply, this will be my go to place in New Bern. Food was delicious and it was fun! They had great live music on the weekend, too. Check them out, but be sure to leave me a table!

Loved this place! It's a very classy joint. Dark, jazzy feel, the performer tonight was spectacular! The drinks were great! Very different, but the bartenders were amazing, VERY attentive and nice. I asked for something out of the blue and the bartender made it happen and even better! Maybe it was just what I had, but I didn't care for Veggie Stuffed Mushrooms or the Truffle Fries. I will say, if you get the fries, ask for the garlic aioli to dip, it tastes so much better than the matchup. I didn't try anything else, because I wasn't that hungry, but I'm sure it's all delicious.

All thai'd up, bircher old fashioned.

We arrived before the kitchen was open so I did not try the food but the drinks were fantastic. The decor has a very moody art deco vibe. Super cool. And the staff were very knowledgable and polite. Great place to have a drink

I had an amazing time at this bar where folks could have their drinks curated to perfection. The services provided were exceptional and the bar is designed where the pianist is playing right above the doorway so that when you walk into the establishment you can immediately hear the music playing. The ambiance is very inviting and alive, and I only wished this place stayed open later.

Really fun spot in the heart of downtown New Bern. The food menu is diverse and fun -- our four top all had different meals, even though there are lots of shareables. The cocktail menu is even better, consisting of different drinks for different stages of the night. There are a lot of levels and areas of dining, so returning will always be a unique experience. This really felt like a "big city" bar, complete with live music.

Looking for a high caliber entertainment night out in historic New Bern, then look no further than Baxter's downtown on Polluck St. Their staff is extremely attentive to ensure you have an unrivaled experience. Baxter's ambiance and interior is unique. It lends itself to an intimate speakeasy vibe where you can choose from sitting at the bar or comfy upholstered chairs & sofas or elevated mezzanine seating or a laidback private room. The private rooms are wired for sound, so you have the ability to listen to a performance from the comfort of your "own living room ". And can we talk about the talented performers they're able to book! From their own in-house talent such as Von Lewis & Abbey Clark, Tyler Griffin plus national artists such as Bernard Purdie & Elliot Lurie...all have provided us with memorable entertainment! Baxter's team of mixologists knows how to craft potent potables that add to your experience. My husband was impressed by their extensive bourbon selection including their option to smoke it. Plus their culinary team's tapas provide the perfect nosh to pair with your libation! The shrimp cocktail was a hit with our crowd! Not up for a night out on the town, then Baxter's brunch is sure to hit the spot. Bottom line...you owe it to yourself to experience Baxter's perfectly paired good libations and good vibrations!

Not a great pic but really great meal!

The bartender was busy working and singing in between taking orders as she prepared drinks for customers. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and offered the specials before we placed our order. We love to sample the menu when we travel and the vast menu of tapas gave us the perfect opportunity to try just about everything. They had a smaller wine selection, but there was something for just about everyone. Our waiter was very attentive and offered suggestions on what to try if we were torn between several menu options. The Spanish lamb meatballs, truffle honey pork belly and rosemary beef were the tapas that stood out as the most flavorful and making us each want just one more bite. The Spanish meatballs were glazed with sriracha which caused me to pause before ordering. However, I'm so happy that we gave them a try. They had a bold flavor, but the whipped feta and cilantro were enough to balance the heat. The truffle honey pork belly was sliced differently. We have only had this cut into cubes at other restaurants in the past. The way that they slice the pork belly is so much better. The pork belly was served with cheese grits. We don't even like cheese grits, but could not get enough of these smoked Gouda grits. The rosemary beef with asparagus and mashed potatoes was perfect. The beef was tender, the asparagus cooked to perfection and who doesn't love mashed potatoes. We visit the crystal coast about twice a year and always try a couple of new places. The Brussels were crispy and savory, and even the potstickers were a standout. Nothing felt like an afterthought. Service was perfect for the tapas setting too. Not rushed, we didn't feel over bothered, but not neglected either. Overall, it felt elevated but still comfortable. A great experience without feeling over the top. We'll definitely be back.

This was our first visit, so we were excited to get a water view when seated at our table - it was a bit too blustery to sit outside overlooking the river and massive boats parked alongside the waterfront restaurant. Our server, Brooke, guided us through everything from the cocktail menu to the entrees, effortlessly - she made solid suggestions from the get-go and was a delight to have helping us. Our two-top started off with a classic Persimmons Old Fashioned ($18) cocktail and a pear vodka, habanero and cucumber lime drink called the Bon Voyage ($14). We chose to split the Roasted Beet Salad ($13) as our appetizer and it was certainly large enough for two to share. The spring mix was topped with delicious red and golden beets, flecks of goat cheese and pistachios, as well as a thick fig balsamic. The salad could have easily been a meal topped with an optional protein. The entree menu features most of the coastal classics, including Fish Tacos ($16), a couple of massive burgers and some heavier offerings like Seafood Pasta ($32) and a huge Fried Seafood Platter ($30) We opted for the Tequila Salmon ($32), served over rice pilaf with green beans and a spicy margarita sauce. I ordered the Unicorn Fish ($30), mostly out of curiosity and upon Brooke's suggestion. The latter was an amazingly flakey fish with the taste and texture of grouper. Topped with honey pecans and served over a lemon scallop risotto with asparagus and spinach - certainly the most nicely prepared fish I've had in a very long time. We wrapped up the meal with a couple more cocktails and enjoyed the late afternoon view - the Wake Breaker ($18) drinks feature reposado, bailey's chocolate and a touch of habanero - the perfect end to an amazing meal.

All the tables were full of friend and family groups playing board games and enjoying various flatbreads and libations. Seems like the kind of place the local neighborhoods enjoy and spend quite a bit of time at. At the moment, can't remember the names of the cocktails we got, its been a few months. But I do remember the toasts. This place doesnt have a kitchen in a traditional sense, more like a prep area where they bring ingredients together (that I imagine are made off site) and toast it up to present you with some pretty unique combos and flavors. Honestly, a great way around some of the health code restrictions that start to apply to more in-depth operations while still having a robust menu. We ordered a variety for the 4 of us, as this was dinner that evening. Gettin Figgy with it was a favorite, as were the Pig and the Goat, and the Reuben. Their version of a Cubano was alright, but as could be the case you'd imagine, the pork was a little dry. The caprese was the only one we got that seemed to be a universal thumbs down, the avocado spread wasn't working with the other ingredients. I wanted the brussel sprouts but was a little reluctant because of the beets. She said it was good and give it a try. I glad I did what a treat. The brussels were lightly fried. The real treat was the flavor profile. The bitterness of the brussels, pickled sweetness of the beets, creaminess of the goat cheese with the crunch of the pecans....wow. So good and it was lightly dressed with the pickling liquid. I went with the jerk salmon for the entree. The salmon was cooked perfect and had a nice crust on it. It was served with a citrus (mango forward) salsa on top of jasmine coconut rice. It is all a great idea and the combo was good. Only feedback was the red bell peppers seemed out of place and took away from the dish and the jasmine rice was a little too bland. I could taste the hint of coconut which was good but some seasoning or a touch of salt on the rice would have paired great with the salmon and orange glaze. Over a gem in New Bern with great service.

I left here a little squeamish from what I witnessed. After all, I was seated at a booth table with a full view of the open kitchen. I noticed the food runner repeatedly touching his nose then the plates of food. I watched him reset a table and was touching the silverware by the tines, the part that goes in your mouth, rather than the handles. I'm not sure if the hands had been washed when he added by hand garnish to my dessert. I immediately removed the garnish but should have returned the dish to get it remade. Also, a table of six was seated then left a few minutes later and the glasses and silverware were not replaced while I was there, leaving me to assume they were not replaced for the next guests. I also noticed the restaurant had many cameras, so these hygiene lapses were likely recorded. For an upscale spot, these hygiene issues were disappointing. I truly enjoyed the flavors and the atmosphere, and I would be happy to return in the future if I could be confident that basic hygiene and service protocols were being strictly followed. I'd particularly love to come back and try the strawberry cake next time.

Firstly, I want to commend their service... our waiter was super kind and attentive, and all the…read morestaff were continuously refilling our waters. Also, the ambiance was fun and romantic. Relatively dark and fancy inside, but more than light enough to read menus and have good convo. For one of the most highly talked about restaurants in New Bern, I was hoping for more impressive taste though. My partner and I got the half dozen oyster special, pamlico curry, and the duck pastrami pizza. It came out pretty quick and looked great (they even split our meal without us specifying and without up charge when they confirmed we were sharing), but just tasted decent. For the oysters, I would've preferred their vinaigrette on the side. Also think a classic mignonette is a bit better. The curry takes a creative but underwhelming spin on shrimp and grits. Lastly, the pizza was pretty good but could've used some more duck. To be fair, we may have just not ordered the right foods, but we weren't very impressed by the drinks either. However, based on the service and other great reviews, we will be back to try their other stuff!
