Five stars for the ambience, four stars for the drinks, three stars for the food. Service was good. We strolled in at about 4:45 hoping to get some apps and drinks. The kitchen only opens at 5 PM so we had to wait a little bit for food which was fine.

The vibe is perfect and the place is so unique. There is live music but it isn't so loud that you aren't able to carry on a conversation. We sat at the bar and the service was great. The cocktails are superb! If you don't know what you want, ask them; she picked out the perfect one for me. The Tater Crabs were perfect!!! A must have if you like crab. The rest of the meal was okay. Next time, we'll grab a cocktail and eat elsewhere. It's also expensive!

Go for the drinks and ambiance, skip the food! We got mocktails, which were delicious and special- mine actually had meringue on top and tasted like key lime pie! There was live piano music which was fun to listen to, while also not being too loud because the piano player was kind of isolated on the other side of the room. The food was...not great. Mostly lacking in vegetables, and everything had cheese. We got the ceviche because we were at the coast....but it was mostly pineapple and served with some sad, stale crackers that we didn't even finish. We also got the smokehouse Mac and cheese...should have been labeled "stouffers Mac and cheese." Service was excellent- nice host and nice server who helped us decide which mocktails to get. Also, they clearly hire for the eye candy...

Beautiful inside this time of the year with all the Holiday decorations, great for drinks and appetizers BUT the menu is limited. They have a stage for music, will have to go back when the band is playing for drinks.

    Many accolades for this restaurant

We really enjoyed this restaurant and I admired what looked like a very smart business plan that should keep them around! The money is in the booze and they get that! The drink menu was far more extensive than the dinner menu and featured very unique cocktails. They were fun,but be prepared to pay $15 and up for the experience. Your entree will be close to that same price. Their menu stuck to the foods that everyone wants when out for a good time Foods like burgers, fish and chips, tacos, steak. As my husband remarked," There is nothing on this menu I wouldn't want to eat!" Tried and true favorites that don't require a huge inventory for the business plan. Far less entrees than drinks from which to choose. Small plates allowed their James Beard credentials to shine. Very creative choices that were delicious! We got a great dessert to go, because we were too full! Simply, this will be my go to place in New Bern. Food was delicious and it was fun! They had great live music on the weekend, too. Check them out, but be sure to leave me a table!

Loved this place! It's a very classy joint. Dark, jazzy feel, the performer tonight was spectacular! The drinks were great! Very different, but the bartenders were amazing, VERY attentive and nice. I asked for something out of the blue and the bartender made it happen and even better! Maybe it was just what I had, but I didn't care for Veggie Stuffed Mushrooms or the Truffle Fries. I will say, if you get the fries, ask for the garlic aioli to dip, it tastes so much better than the matchup. I didn't try anything else, because I wasn't that hungry, but I'm sure it's all delicious.

All thai'd up, bircher old fashioned.

We arrived before the kitchen was open so I did not try the food but the drinks were fantastic. The decor has a very moody art deco vibe. Super cool. And the staff were very knowledgable and polite. Great place to have a drink

I had an amazing time at this bar where folks could have their drinks curated to perfection. The services provided were exceptional and the bar is designed where the pianist is playing right above the doorway so that when you walk into the establishment you can immediately hear the music playing. The ambiance is very inviting and alive, and I only wished this place stayed open later.

Really fun spot in the heart of downtown New Bern. The food menu is diverse and fun -- our four top all had different meals, even though there are lots of shareables. The cocktail menu is even better, consisting of different drinks for different stages of the night. There are a lot of levels and areas of dining, so returning will always be a unique experience. This really felt like a "big city" bar, complete with live music.

Looking for a high caliber entertainment night out in historic New Bern, then look no further than Baxter's downtown on Polluck St. Their staff is extremely attentive to ensure you have an unrivaled experience. Baxter's ambiance and interior is unique. It lends itself to an intimate speakeasy vibe where you can choose from sitting at the bar or comfy upholstered chairs & sofas or elevated mezzanine seating or a laidback private room. The private rooms are wired for sound, so you have the ability to listen to a performance from the comfort of your "own living room ". And can we talk about the talented performers they're able to book! From their own in-house talent such as Von Lewis & Abbey Clark, Tyler Griffin plus national artists such as Bernard Purdie & Elliot Lurie...all have provided us with memorable entertainment! Baxter's team of mixologists knows how to craft potent potables that add to your experience. My husband was impressed by their extensive bourbon selection including their option to smoke it. Plus their culinary team's tapas provide the perfect nosh to pair with your libation! The shrimp cocktail was a hit with our crowd! Not up for a night out on the town, then Baxter's brunch is sure to hit the spot. Bottom line...you owe it to yourself to experience Baxter's perfectly paired good libations and good vibrations!

Not a great pic but really great meal!

My husband and I have enjoyed drinks (cocktails and mocktails) here 3 or 4 times. The last two times, we also enjoyed meals and dessert. Last night, we had the sausage-stuffed mushrooms (a vegetarian option is also available), chorizo empanadas, shrimp cocktail, and the bbq pork eggrolls. It was all very good. Previously, we also tried the chicken kebabs and meatballs. The later was pretty average but I'd totally recommend everything else. For dessert, we've had the creme bruelee each time (they torch it at your table) and we also tried the bananas foster last night. They put a creative spin on the BF and the folks next to us had the chocolate cake. Apparently it's made in-house each morning and while we didn't regret our choices, I know what we're trying next time! The ambience is amazing and they have (free) live music most every night. Whether you're looking for a quick drink or an entire night out, highly recommend Baxter's.

The Brussels were crispy and savory, and even the potstickers were a standout. Nothing felt like an afterthought. Service was perfect for the tapas setting too. We arrived with a reservation (always a wise move), though we were seated immediately, greeted by a gracious host who set our lunch off on the right note. Once settled, we were welcomed by Philip, whose ease and genuine enthusiasm made the experience feel less transactional and more personal. He spoke about the menu with confidence and curiosity, the mark of someone who truly enjoys being there. Drinks came first: my husband ordered a Painkiller easily one of the best we had during our time on the coast while our son stuck with a classic Coke, and I opted for water. As we ordered, it became clear we were leaning fully into the small plates philosophy. When Philip smiled and dubbed us "tapas aficionados," it felt like an acknowledgment rather than a joke and in that moment, we felt perfectly at home. The table filled quickly. Spanish lamb meatballs arrived first, glazed with sriracha and paired with whipped feta and cilantro bold, balanced, and deeply satisfying. Pork pot stickers followed, tender and flavorful, with a soy-ginger dipping sauce and sweet Thai chili providing just the right contrast. The Gambas al Ajillo shrimp bathed in extra-virgin olive oil and garlic, served with crostini, was classic and comforting. But the standout was the Potatoes Bravas: sliced potatoes grilled to a crisp and finished with a spicy brava aioli. They were addictive in the best way, the kind of dish you keep thinking about long after the table is cleared. Circa 81 is polished yet relaxed, clean, and thoughtfully maintained, a place where the food arrives hot, the service feels human, and the atmosphere invites you to linger. It's a restaurant I would happily return to, and one that earned its place among my favorites on the Crystal Coast.

The host greeted us with genuine enthusiasm and an ease that made it clear he knew exactly why we were there. His warmth felt celebratory without being performative, just right. We were led to our table and introduced to Iesha, whose presence defined the evening. Iesha guided us through the menu with confidence and care, highlighting a thoughtful anniversary tradition: a complimentary glass of champagne or crème brûlée. We happily chose both. She struck that elusive balance of attentiveness and restraint present when needed, graciously invisible when not allowing the evening to unfold at its own pace. Our table sampled a range of the menu. The rare curry-seared local tuna arrived with curry riced cauliflower and traditional accompaniments unexpected in flavor but satisfying nonetheless. Seems like the kind of place the local neighborhoods enjoy and spend quite a bit of time at. At the moment, can't remember the names of the cocktails we got, its been a few months. But I do remember the toasts. This place doesnt have a kitchen in a traditional sense, more like a prep area where they bring ingredients together (that I imagine are made off site) and toast it up to present you with some pretty unique combos and flavors. Honestly, a great way around some of the health code restrictions that start to apply to more in-depth operations while still having a robust menu. We ordered a variety for the 4 of us, as this was dinner that evening. Gettin Figgy with it was a favorite, as were the Pig and the Goat, and the Reuben. Their version of a Cubano was alright, but as could be the case you'd imagine, the pork was a little dry. The caprese was the only one we got that seemed to be a universal thumbs down, the avocado spread wasn't working with the other ingredients. It wasn't busy while I was there but quiet enough I couldn't hear other conversations. Initially the host wanted to seat me at the bar but when I declined, gave me a seat near the open kitchen. My waitress was friendly and helped me select the strawberry blonde to go with the strawberry salad. This was smaller than expected and just one or two strawberries. There was a little too much dressing for my taste as I forgot to order it on the side. I did like how the flavors came together. I also had the chocolate torte which was rich and decadent. I left here a little squeamish from what I witnessed. After all, I was seated at a booth table with a full view of the open kitchen. I noticed the food runner repeatedly touching his nose then the plates of food. I watched him reset a table and was touching the silverware by the tines, the part that goes in your mouth, rather than the handles. I'm not sure if the hands had been washed when he added by hand garnish to my dessert. I immediately removed the garnish but should have returned the dish to get it remade. Also, a table of six was seated then left a few minutes later and the glasses and silverware were not replaced while I was there, leaving me to assume they were not replaced for the next guests. I also noticed the restaurant had many cameras, so these hygiene lapses were likely recorded. For an upscale spot, these hygiene issues were disappointing. I truly enjoyed the flavors and the atmosphere, and I would be happy to return in the future if I could be confident that basic hygiene and service protocols were being strictly followed. I'd particularly love to come back and try the strawberry cake next time.
