Oh man, what did an interesting place in new Bern. Definitely a dive bar oddly situated in a strip mall type of location but damn it is fun. Clearly it is a local hangout spot and has pool, a community crew, and lots of beers. Obviously, they serve bar food with a lot of it being burgers. And there are certainly some strange burgers to choose from. I was convinced by the bartender to try the peanut butter and jelly burger, which I did. Pretty good overall - worth a try for sure, but it was a lot of food and I'm not sure I'll go for that one again. My wife and I went to this bar to pass an hour after being told by the massage place 2 doors down to come back in an hour. The massage place has.no one on staff who spoke fluent English and in fact had to use a translator app to communicate with me. After verifying I need not make an appointment, we went to pass our time. When we returned 50 minutes later we were told we could not both be seen because while we were gone a single person came in and was currently being seen (this much I was able to discern through multiple attempts to communicate through the translator app. I returned to The Bern Allowing my wife to take the now only one spot available. The bartender, Kaylie mentioned we were there before and that the tab had been closed. I confirmed and stated "Yes because the business 2 doors down doesn't speak English and messed up the fact we were supposed to both be seen." Kaylie's response was "Thats offensive." I asked what is offensive? To which she told me that I pointed out they didn't speak English and walked away "busy". When I tried later to ask a very logical question " If I moved to China (the people spoke Mandarin) and opened a business, would I not he expected to either speak enough Mandarin or keep someone on staff who did?" She did not have the time for my question stating "I'm too busy to argue with you." Then she had one of her friends come over while I was checking out to ask about tipping. I tried to ask the same question and was called racist. Then, for defending myself, not raising my voice or becoming belligerent, the bouncer asked me to leave all because the bartender knew 1. I was not tipping and 2. I was leaving her a bad review In closing DO NOT visit this bar if you value logic or have an opinion. read more

Stopped by here around 10 PM last night for take-out order (burgers are STILL good here) and had a drink while waiting. Heard some of the most offensive music I've EVER heard including 2 songs with the "F-bomb" and 1 with the "N-word" and my bartender was a black man (I wonder how HE felt?). Went tonight with a party of 14. Worst service you could get. People in past reviews must have family the works for them. Onion rings and coleslaw tastes like it came from Food Lion. Took over 25 mins at a time for server to check on us and refill drinks. Not as good as it's played up to be. I cook better burgers too. read more

Wow. Just wow. So crazy good! We found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Just driving through New Bern and found this gem. The pour of wine is worth the money! Hubby had a local beer, which he always loves to try. The burgers were off the hook! I had the Bourbon Burger and he had the burger with ghost peppers and jalapeños. The food is good. The atmosphere and the regular patrons were rude. I had my seat taken, a woman kept talking about my food while I was eating like she wanted me to share, then she started talking to herself, on the other side of the bar, a woman was hollering slut over and over to someone, the place looks like it's become run down some what. The bartender that waited on me was very nice and smiled. The other employees just seemed to look at me like "what". The cook was not wearing his mask, it was around his neck while cooking. Do not normally go to a sports bar but went with 4 friends after seeing a local movie. The menu was limited. Mostly appetizers and a variety of burgers (with no sides), cheese steak or chicken, grilled cheese, and PBJ. My friend ordered wine and got about 4 oz, so I asked the server if that was their normal size and he added a few more ounces. The service was good and we all had burgers, which were delicious. Love Bloody Mary and Eggs Benedict Sundays! Great place to enjoy a Sunday afternoon wind down while preparing for the work week. Not many places make Eggs Benny to begin with, so that, in itself, makes this bar special. And then you get to customize your Bloody Mary exactly the way you like it. I love that! The music is always too loud, so be prepared for that. I'm sure most people enjoy that, it's just not my preferred environment when I want to talk to people. Avoid this place like the plaque.. unless you don't mind being charged double even triple on your tabs. We liked going to this place because they have a juke box machine, the food (bar bites) are good, the drinks are cheap (at least we thought) but the owner nor his staff can manage to give us a correct tab when we go to close out. The worst part is, when we questioned the tab and asked for an itemized, they couldn't even provide one. It's pretty sad when you feel like you have to type in each drink you order on your phone notepad to show it to the bar tender when they try to over charge you. We even questioned the owner one night about a round of shots on a tab someone else had already paid for and he tried to add it to a second persons tab and he stated "well those might have already been paid for..?" What kind of business is he running? The Bern is a nice change of atmosphere compared to all the old run down bars in New Bern. The bar in inviting, nice lighting, there's pool tables with red felt, a few other arcade games, and decent burgers. Don't expect to bring a large group and expect to sit down because theres only a few tables for more than 3 people. The menu is burgers and appetizers and that's about it. When we asked about the beer on tap there were only 6. When we were done eating we asked for our check but never got one. I went there with three other people to experience these burgers everyone was talking about. This place is a bar. I understand that. I first walked past smokers that were drinking bottles of beer at the sidewalk tables. Once in the smoke-free bar, I heard loud music playing from a customer-fed juke box and only about 3 people around the bar. We sat down and placed our order. I can't understand why the meal for four people could not come out at the same time. While the burgers were cooked to order (med, med-well, etc.) the fries were not warm and the grease they used must be dirty or not the right temp because the fries were clumped together. The bread was a bit flaky when biting into the burger. Overall, for a bar, this was a good burger. But I will go elsewhere when I have a craving for a burger. I was looking forward to this being a new lunch/dinner spot but it serves it purpose...probably the best burger bar in town, but expect no more than a burger in a bar. read more
