I dined for lunch at Cypress Hall in Downtown New Bern. The decor is great. I liked the exposed brick and high ceilings in the historic building. It also feels modern. One half feels historic and the other half feels modern with the artwork, mirrors, and finishes. The lighting is dim but you can still read the menu. It wasn't busy while I was there but quiet enough I couldn't hear other conversations. Initially the host wanted to seat me at the bar but when I declined, gave me a seat near the open kitchen. My waitress was friendly and helped me select the strawberry blonde to go with the strawberry salad. This was smaller than expected and just one or two strawberries. There was a little too much dressing for my taste as I forgot to order it on the side. I did like how the flavors came together. I also had the chocolate torte which was rich and decadent. I left here a little squeamish from what I witnessed. After all, I was seated at a booth table with a full view of the open kitchen. I noticed the food runner repeatedly touching his nose then the plates of food. I watched him reset a table and was touching the silverware by the tines, the part that goes in your mouth, rather than the handles. I'm not sure if the hands had been washed when he added by hand garnish to my dessert. I immediately removed the garnish but should have returned the dish to get it remade. Also, a table of six was seated then left a few minutes later and the glasses and silverware were not replaced while I was there, leaving me to assume they were not replaced for the next guests. I also noticed the restaurant had many cameras, so these hygiene lapses were likely recorded. For an upscale spot, these hygiene issues were disappointing. I truly enjoyed the flavors and the atmosphere, and I would be happy to return in the future if I could be confident that basic hygiene and service protocols were being strictly followed. I'd particularly love to come back and try the strawberry cake next time.

Firstly, I want to commend their service... our waiter was super kind and attentive, and all the staff were continuously refilling our waters. Also, the ambiance was fun and romantic. Relatively dark and fancy inside, but more than light enough to read menus and have good convo. For one of the most highly talked about restaurants in New Bern, I was hoping for more impressive taste though. My partner and I got the half dozen oyster special, pamlico curry, and the duck pastrami pizza. It came out pretty quick and looked great (they even split our meal without us specifying and without up charge when they confirmed we were sharing), but just tasted decent. For the oysters, I would've preferred their vinaigrette on the side. Also think a classic mignonette is a bit better. The curry takes a creative but underwhelming spin on shrimp and grits. Lastly, the pizza was pretty good but could've used some more duck. To be fair, we may have just not ordered the right foods, but we weren't very impressed by the drinks either. However, based on the service and other great reviews, we will be back to try their other stuff!

Beautiful restaurant, dark, moody, cool vibes. The shrimp Gnochetti may be the best thing I've ever had. I will dream about it forever. Good cocktails. Friendly service. Do not get the brazino. But the Gnochetti!!

Went for lunch, sat at the bar. (Recommend) Started with beers on tap, then went one order at a time of: deviled eggs, cacio e pepe, and then the mushroom goat cheese pizza. Bartender was amazing! $102 plus $38 tip. Forgot to snap a pic of the pizza, but the fig balsamic glaze is from the Olive Oil store two or three doors down! Love that!

Bestie & I specifically came to New Bern to geocache & I had 2 places in mind for lunch and luckily for us, the other spot was closed. I say luckily because the brisket burger we both had has to be one of the best tasting, and juicy, burgers I've ever had. The truffle fries arrived hot and delectable. What makes this burger special is I do not care for any pink in my burger and most folks will testify it drains all the flavor and juices out of the burger. That was NOT the case here. I requested the 257 sauce be OTS & replaced with mayo. Julie asked if it would be ok if the mayo came out in a ramekin, which I said would be fine. Most times a server won't take that extra time to ask that & Julie got extra points for that. Prior to our burgers I ordered the ham & herb focaccia & it arrived hot, crispy on the outside but soft and pillowy, like lying on an edible down comforter. The vinaigrette that accompanied the bread was a delightful dip, sweet & tart at the same time. To finish our lunch off we had bread pudding. Y'all, if you're ever on the fence about having it after a full meal, get it. The bread was so light it was unexpected. I made sure to leave room for dessert & because the bread was so light, I ate almost my entire half. The vive here was low key but classy. We were in the side dining room with only a few other diners & it was like being in your own living room. Julie was one of the best servers ever. Attentive but not hovering. Always there to refill our waters without asking, personable and friendly but respectful and as she handed my card back she pronounced my last name correctly. She gets extra points for that as it doesn't happen often. All in all, I would come back to New Bern just to dine here. I told my husband it was so good I wanted to return soon for dinner with him or maybe brunch so we can try the breakfast pizza. Thank you Julie, chefs, bussers and side servers. We had a great time!!

Service, food and ambiance was fabulous! The Strawberry cake was a must try and is everything you've read about. The Red Velvet crème brûlée was amazing too!

Oysters with peach mignonette

Delicious food. Had oysters with peach mignonette and pork cheeks. Delicious drinks. Had blue smoke cocktail recommended by the barista. Great service and ambience. Highly recommend for your visit to New Bern!

The food, service, ambiance ....everything here is on point. We didn't have a reservation but we're warmly welcomed by the hosts who also made a recommendation to save room for their famous strawberry cake and pecan pie cheesecake. We LOVE good food and typically never leave room for dessert but decided to break tradition tonight. And boy are we thankful we did. We shared the small plate pumpkin + endive salad which was a great combination of flavors. Next we shared a Bianco pizza. I've had a lot of brick oven pizzas in my time and this was definitely in the top two if not the top one. The crust was crisp and light. The balance of flavors was amazing. Get one, you won't regret it. Finally, the dessert came. We were pretty full from dinner but ordered both. We're so thankful we broke tradition tonight. The strawberry cake is moist, cold, and full of delicious strawberry fruit flavor. The cheesecake was dense with a healthy helping of pecans. The crust was epic. I don't know what was in it...but I think angels made it.

This may not be the best photo, but it is the BEST burger. Recommended by the bartenders, who are all super nice. This is the brisket burger. Get it. We visited New Bern and honestly went here three times!

Would love to try it with my wife and family. We have a 12, 8 & 3 y/o however and wondering if bringing them would be frowned upon or if we should keep this as more of a date night just the two of us? T.I.a

My first time was with both of my daughters (13&15. It's more oriented towards date night atmosphere but my kids liked it. Food was great and service was impeccable. My wife and I will return for date night the next time.

We made a reservation and were 30 minutes late on a Saturday night. They said they would try to save our reservation. It was half empty when we arrived at 7 pm. Tried to seat us inside at a mediocre table. Glad I asked to sit outside. Beautiful, huge patio. I recommend pushing to stay away from the door inside. There is an annoying bug zapper (why?!) there that kept going off. Glad we didn't sit at the table right near the door. Dead bugs would have been in our food. We had the feta dip appetizer. Said the pitas were toasted. Not. The dip had more cucumber salad than anything. Our server was very accommodating. He raved about the Biltmore Riesling. I don't usually like sweet wine which it was not. Great recommendation. I also tried the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Riesling for the win! I had the unicorn fish. First time. Perfectly cooked. Yum. My husband had the chicken sandwich and asked to add a fried green tomato and have baby cauliflower. Two upcharges for an additional $2. Worth it. My son had the chicken Parmesan. He liked it. Just small amount of chicken. Overall, liked it. Would love to go back!

(Note give option of in or out we originally said in and changed our minds after walking around) they handle it above perfection! Our waitress Ridley M was super sweet comforting and understanding she was a 15/10 loved her personality and more!! Now side note this is a Major seafood restaurant (which yes I knew). I choose it for that reason as it was to celebrate not just the 4th but also my hubby who LOVES seafood. I do as well but I am highly allergic as in anaphylactic type allergic to ALL types. Ridley made sure the kitchen knew and the kitchen handled it 100000% I had NO ISSUES at all. I enjoyed my food beyond belief as did my husband! The atmosphere was on point the staff was above point frankly and the food yeah we will be back!!! Hubby got the fish and chips and I got the pork chop with asparagus instead of Brussels. Most amazing "date night" ever!!! Both of us are stuffed but not feeling heavy like. I honestly would give this place a 15/10 like on point 100%! To all on board... Thank you for all you hard work to make our night magically beautiful (and safe). Forever in our hearts!!!

I don't generally dine at bars (only because inebriated folks tend to make me nervous) but the reviews on the burgers were too good to pass up. Hubby & I sat at the bar near the door while the rest of the folks were around the corner so we were pretty much alone at our end. While the bartender gave us drinks pretty quickly, our food sat at the window for a few minutes as she made drinks for others. Thankfully the chef brought our burgers to us after announcing "food at the window" twice. And to be honest, it was worth the wait. I ordered the Bourbon Street Boomer with fries & hubby had The Penguin. Y'all, those burgers were phenomenal!! Cooked to order and superbly seasoned. I'm 61 & have had burgers all over the world and my burger was the best I've ever had. It was juicy & cheesy and whatever seasoning they used in the meat was delectable. Hubby devoured his entire burger but I could only eat about a 1/4th of mine. The fries were soooooo good too and they were still good hours later when I dined on my burger again. We couldn't find enough adjectives to get our praise across but we tipped our chef $20 just to show our appreciation. I only took one pic because I wanted to eat it, not photograph it. I would definitely recommend stopping in. And if dining in a bar isn't your thing, order take out. The burgers are too good to pass up. We will most assuredly be back for more burgers. And we live in Richlands! Thanks for a delightful meal.

There were a few restaurants but MJ's stood out amongst the rest for the photos and reviews. MJ's is located in downtown New Bern. The oysters were steamed to perfection, the clams were not dried out, the shrimp was perfectly seasoned with Old Bay and red onions and the crab legs were not dried out. What I am trying to say is, the seafood was fresh and not pre-cooked. It was cook to order. Our waiter was awesome. Even though the restaurant was packed full, he paid attention to our needs. Our glasses never got empty. He kept our table cleared by replacing the shell bucket without asking. We really appreciate the customer service. After dinner, we decided on dessert and had the lemon blueberry pie. I highly recommend it ... deliciousness!!! Thank you MJ's for a special time with delicious food.
