Tasty Honey Ham on a Portuguese roll
    Suzanne H.

Kitchen on Trent is a deliciousness hidden gem located in the unassuming Trent Village shopping center. Today we dined in for lunch. Staff wears masks, and tables are socially distanced. They're friendly and helpful. You order at the counter, and they bring the food to your table. Before ordering, make sure you check out their daily specials menu. I had the tastiest Gyro I've ever put in my mouth. It was warmed by sautéed onions which was a nice addition to the sandwich! And thank you for cutting the pita in half which made it easier to manage...and shareable! The Mediterranean salad with the Gyro was the perfect pairing! My husband had the Honey Roasted Ham sandwich. The Portuguese roll is similar to a Chibata roll, but softer and more delicious! The dijon mustard was the perfect topping. Plus the chips were tasty! Based on our experience, we'll be back to sample more of their delicious menu items!

Throw this raw in the trash.

My wife who is about to get hip replacement surgery recently got several deliveries from this establishment. She was initially pleased with the first few. However, this last experience was so overwhelmingly disgusting (and unsanitary) , we're never going back and I have to give this establishment a "one" star rating. Today my wife ordered a salmon salad for lunch. There were specific instruction to cook the salmon "well done." The salmon was delivered raw, contaminating the whole salad so she couldn't salvage any any of it. The owner/manager's response was to tell her to stick it in the microwave for a second or two. After my wife pushed back, she was told it could be remade if she could come pick it up. She said she couldn't and no offer for a refund was made. My wife had to turn around and re-order from Country Biscuit for delivery. She's probably eaten there well over a hundred times and never had any issues with undercooked/raw meat. Go to Country Biscuit and not this establishment. Later in the day when I called and spoke to the owner/manager to express my concern with my wife's service, he seemed indifferent to the complaint. I think he only partially understood how egregious serving raw fish was once I made the analogy of how Gordon Ramsey deals with this stuff, as he eventually only gave a half-hearted apology. Read some of the other highly negative posts by others to see that our complaint is not atypical.

I read others that talk about high prices. We went for lunch and were surprised at the reasonable prices. We thought it was going to be a meat and three but it turned out to be a kinda trendy up scale gourmet restaurant. Meat loaf and salad filled the whole plate up for under $10. Can't beat that. Everything we saw there looked good. If this place was downtown it would be packed.

    Pick 3 salad.

Wow! What a pleasant surprise! A hidden gem that I love! These are the surprises and reviews that I love doing. I was in the mood for a salad and a cup of soup. This place came up and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it from the outside. I walked in and everyone was so friendly and the people ordering were telling me what was good. You order at the counter and then they bring it to you. One lady said she has been coming here every day for 8 years. The prices are extremely inexpensive and they make everything from scratch. It reminded me of a non chained Panera. It was all senior citizens in there but that didn't make me feel any different. I ordered the choose 3 salad with curries tuna salad , gingered broccoli, and bow tie pasta. They put it all on a house salad with delicious homemade balsamic vinegaraitte. I also had a cup of clam chowder. The broccoli was amazing and the Curried Tuna is something I would crave. The soup was not my fav but a good clam chowder is hard to make. All in all this is a perfect lunch spot when you just want good food in a very casual environment or great take Out.

    Flowers in restaurants window box.

Perfect eggs, grits, sausage (a little salty, though)! The -free blueberry muffin was a wonderful addition to our tasty breakfast. Nice people, and seems like a local hangout for older folks, who are treated well. Good vibes! Also really appreciated the clean, genderneutral restroom with a bag hook. We'll be back another day for lunch, too try the gluten-free wraps!

One half feels historic and the other half feels modern with the artwork, mirrors, and finishes. The lighting is dim but you can still read the menu. It wasn't busy while I was there but quiet enough I couldn't hear other conversations. Initially the host wanted to seat me at the bar but when I declined, gave me a seat near the open kitchen. My waitress was friendly and helped me select the strawberry blonde to go with the strawberry salad. This was smaller than expected and just one or two strawberries. There was a little too much dressing for my taste as I forgot to order it on the side. I did like how the flavors came together. I also had the chocolate torte which was rich and decadent. I left here a little squeamish from what I witnessed. After all, I was seated at a booth table with a full view of the open kitchen. I noticed the food runner repeatedly touching his nose then the plates of food. I watched him reset a table and was touching the silverware by the tines, the part that goes in your mouth, rather than the handles. I'm not sure if the hands had been washed when he added by hand garnish to my dessert. I immediately removed the garnish but should have returned the dish to get it remade. Also, a table of six was seated then left a few minutes later and the glasses and silverware were not replaced while I was there, leaving me to assume they were not replaced for the next guests. I also noticed the restaurant had many cameras, so these hygiene lapses were likely recorded. For an upscale spot, these hygiene issues were disappointing. I truly enjoyed the flavors and the atmosphere, and I would be happy to return in the future if I could be confident that basic hygiene and service protocols were being strictly followed. I'd particularly love to come back and try the strawberry cake next time.

We had dinner there again a couple weeks ago and while he didn't get the ribeye he ordered, the ribeye he got was delicious. I got the Chinese-style ribs & slaw special. I almost ordered the duck special but I can make good duck at home. My ribs are hopeless. The server described these ribs as a small plate but I got 9 tasty ribs and the slaw was the perfect acidity to cut the sweet, heavy richness of the ribs. I generally don't care for 5 spice powder; it's usually too cinnamon or too cloves forward but these were perfect. Also, if you've never tried their South African Pudding, do yourself a favor and order it next time. It's like a cold bread pudding a bed of caramel and topped with whipped cream (but last night, it seemed like marshmallow cream). Never a disappointment and glad to have a great steak option in New Bern.

Disappointing Birthday Experience…read more We chose The Chelsea in New Bern to celebrate my wife's birthday. We've been here once before and had no issues, which is why this experience was so frustrating. This visit was below average. The food overall was overly salty, but the biggest issue came when we were packing our food to go. As my wife was about to box up her chicken bruschetta, we noticed a hair stuck between the chicken breasts. We immediately informed the waitress. Instead of allowing us to document the issue, she quickly took the plate away. No replacement entrée was offered. The manager came over and offered a dessert, but since it was my wife's birthday, we already had cake waiting at home. A replacement meal or removal of the entrée from the bill would have made more sense. For a restaurant that presents itself as upscale, the way this was handled was disappointing; especially on a special occasion. Cleanliness and proper resolution matter, and unfortunately this experience missed the mark.

This was our first visit, so we were excited to get a water view when seated at our table - it was a bit too blustery to sit outside overlooking the river and massive boats parked alongside the waterfront restaurant. Our server, Brooke, guided us through everything from the cocktail menu to the entrees, effortlessly - she made solid suggestions from the get-go and was a delight to have helping us. Our two-top started off with a classic Persimmons Old Fashioned ($18) cocktail and a pear vodka, habanero and cucumber lime drink called the Bon Voyage ($14). We chose to split the Roasted Beet Salad ($13) as our appetizer and it was certainly large enough for two to share. The spring mix was topped with delicious red and golden beets, flecks of goat cheese and pistachios, as well as a thick fig balsamic. The salad could have easily been a meal topped with an optional protein. The entree menu features most of the coastal classics, including Fish Tacos ($16), a couple of massive burgers and some heavier offerings like Seafood Pasta ($32) and a huge Fried Seafood Platter ($30) We opted for the Tequila Salmon ($32), served over rice pilaf with green beans and a spicy margarita sauce. I ordered the Unicorn Fish ($30), mostly out of curiosity and upon Brooke's suggestion. The latter was an amazingly flakey fish with the taste and texture of grouper. Topped with honey pecans and served over a lemon scallop risotto with asparagus and spinach - certainly the most nicely prepared fish I've had in a very long time. We wrapped up the meal with a couple more cocktails and enjoyed the late afternoon view - the Wake Breaker ($18) drinks feature reposado, bailey's chocolate and a touch of habanero - the perfect end to an amazing meal.

Our server Ridley, came to the table promptly, answered our questions and took our orders. Our drinks came quickly and were always full. The food arrived soon after our orders were placed. The presentation of our meals was terrific. Three diners in our party ordered the Fish Tacos and one got the Fish and Chips. It would be an understatement to say the servings were seriously generous. The fish & chips came 3 large fried fish filets and a heaping of seasoned fries. The taco orders each had 3 full vs mini sized soft tacos overflowing with fish filets...the fish was legit spilling out over both ends of the tacos! The fish was lightly battered, nicely seasoned and fried to perfection. The quantity of the food was so generous, only one of us could finish our meal!! On our way out, we stopped and spoke with the manager Kelsey. She is the spirit behind the "the new and improved" Persimmon's ethos. She took no credit for the changes or improvements and instead placed our exemplary experience squarely at the feet of her employees! It's obvious she's a wonderful, caring leader of the Persimmon's team. Cheers to Kelsey, Ridley and the Persimmon's crew!
