Varneys was highlighted on the news for their excellent lobster rolls, so we had to give them a try! Very friendly staff and excellent quality food. We opted for outdoor dining, and I ordered the Manhattan clam chowder to start. We each got a lobster roll as well--I got the warm one with butter, and spouse got the cold one with mayo. Honestly, the only thing holding me back from a 5 star rating here, is price... I would have liked to try a Lobster Roll, but I just couldn't get past the the idea of paying $36 for one. Most things on the menu do seem a bit over-priced. That said, what I received was quite good. Whole belly clams were on special, so I splurged and got those. Portion size was very good - batter was crisp and not greasy. Came with a good portion of fries that were also crisp. I said "oh my G-d" probably five times while eating the warm lobster roll. The lobster was so sweet, and perfectly cooked. The bread tasted amazing with all of the buttery goodness. The cold lobster roll was not as good as the fabulous warm roll, but it was still very very very good. Their fries are awesome - crinkly + flavorful. As I arrived, it started storming rain, so I decided to grab take away since outdoor eating was not possible. The super kind person who took my order over phone offered to bring the food to my car without my asking. Superb customer service right there. Fun place, not much to look at from the street but when you walk inside it's a cute little place with light nautical feel. seating for maybe 35-40 max, server was super nice and friendly made good recommendations, and food was delicious, portions are very large ate half and left very full. Unbelievable. I encountered Merideth. this woman is out of control. Take it that I have never ever left a restaurant with a review. The food was just ok. Nothing special. Presentation was horrible. See photos. She was training a new employee. As it went on I urged the employee to run. This person has no business training anyone. Bizarre does describe what I saw. In the discard bowl for mussels she threw a paper napkin. When I put my shells in there she chastised me because I was supposed to use that napkin. I had to stop the courses from coming as I had just received my soup. 2 more course came while eating soup. When mussel came with a wad of tinfoil I lost it. I don't know what's happened. read more

I love the hometown, locals only vibe of the place. Like the divey, fishy version of cheers... I don't love much else but I do like the place for what it is. I enjoy that it's in the middle of nowhere, and I enjoy they feed their community, the mussels were fresh and free of sand or grit, the white wine n herb it was all sitting in was a bit bland. Same goes for the soup we had. The baked clams weren't bad, but they were that average classic bready stuffed clam, I like when it's a nice full chunk of clam (my personal preference) They serve the beer with a super frosty mug which is severely overlooked nowadays so that a big plus. The chicken park deal looks incredible so maybe they do that stuff better? For a seafood shack they don't have many options I feel. All in all a good heartwarming spot I probably won't rush back to, but I do encourage you to stop in and try it out. 6 hungry folks decended on Varney's last evening for an early Dinner at 5pm. We sat outside on the side where there were maybe 5 picnic tables and 2 easily sat 6. Our server was a most affable young lady that cheerfully took care of our needs. We had a round of wine and beer to start. I had an appy of Chili with the Works...Delish! others had Mussels in wine sauce and various salads...all Delish! For Mains we ordered : Shrimp Marsala over Linguini, Lobster Roll, Mussels in White Wine sauce...All the dishes looked appetizing and tasted great! Went to Varney's today, 7/13/22, for lunch with my wife. Went there a recommendation from a friend...and it an excellent recommendation. This is a gem in the south shore of Long Island. Small quaint place with a few tables inside and seating outside. We went in a few minutes after they opened and were greeted by the waitress who was running the front alone. She was friendly and inviting and her service throughout the lunch was excellent. We started off we their baked clams (6 of them, though they had orders of more.). These were decent size for an appetizer and were not over stuffed...they had a nice mixture of breading, bacon and plenty of clam for our taste. The tops had a nice color to them after being put under the broiler - great baked clams. My wife had their Lobster roll - which they serve either hot with butter or cold, with a mayo like dressing on a brioche bun. My wife likes her Lobster rolls cold and she absolutely loved it. There was actually pieces of lobster and she loved that it was not overly covered with dressing. She had her roll with their homemade potato salad and coleslaw....both were fresh and delicious. Now I had their sea bass broiled over rice. The dish was excellent - though not the most exciting item on the menu, I wanted something light. The rice was a basic white rice and the bass was lightly seasoned with what may have been a sazón like seasoning - nothing spicy or over bearing. The bass was broiled and it was excellent. The portion was two nice size filet of bass. Varney's was an excellent spot for lunch today and I cannot wait to return for some of their other menu items. I love the little old vintage feel - when stepping inside - reminds me of a old restaurant you would see beachside. Quaint and little secret of South shore Long Island. My only thing is - on several occasions I try to call in order and the phone is busy and just looking to grab n go. I end up either opting for somewhere else or just have to go there to order and wait. That's when.... I have issue. Upon arriving I stated I tried calling - phone was busy. At least offer a soda or something on the house while customer is waiting.... Was told short staffed.... Which is regrettably the case everywhere these days. Went here after a decade. It was always good, but some how I stopped going that way over the years. Saw an advertisement that they had lobster rolls and one weekend after a hike decided today stop bye. Delighted to see the old charm still there. The menu was small but came with the same old assurance of fresh fish and simple tasty preparations. We were there only for the lobster roll, and the two of us shared the two: one cold -- with mayonnaise and one hot with melted butter in similar bread rolls. Both were excellent. Abundant lobster and all other things were, appropriately, side-shows. The waitress offered a lemonade/tea. Not too sweet, and nice and cold. Excellent end to a warm Saturday morning. Finally the check: lobster rolls were not on the paper menu. I am sure they were on some boards with a price indicated. I had missed it. The check hence was somewhat of a shock: calculating backwards with some other things we had, long after we left And were on the road, it came to ~ $30+ per roll. A little pricy but decided it was worth it. Would I go there again? YES, but not as often only for the roll. There are plenty of other excellent foods there and the staff are very friendly. read more

The restaurant gets 5 stars not just for a wonderful old fashioned seafood menu that has home cooked food, but the waitress Colleen is the best. She guided us about what to order & made sure everything was prepared to our liking. The clam chowder was seasoned perfectly. The mussels were super & the broiled seafood combo platter couldn't have tasted fresher. The lemon meringue pie is bakery fresh and the home made rice pudding goes fast. We visited Varneys because it has a wonderful reputation. When we walked in, we used the side entrance and the first question was said in a snarky tone. She then asked Do you have reservations? We loooked out at the empty place and said No they seated us, and as I saw the front door I realized that we had probably walked in the wrong door so I forgave the way that we were greeted. The food was fine, the atmosphere was very old DINER like. The service was good, the waitress was smiling and helpful and all of the other servers seemed to be happy. The reason that I rated them a three was because of the taste and price of the food along with the worn down dining room. If the place was updated, it would be great. If their prices matched the state of their building it would be great. If they do that I'll come back and change this to a five star. read more
