We visited Varneys because it has a wonderful reputation. When we walked in, we used the side entrance and the first question was said in a snarky tone. She then asked Do you have reservations? We loooked out at the empty place and said No they seated us, and as I saw the front door I realized that we had probably walked in the wrong door so I forgave the way that we were greeted. The food was fine, the atmosphere was very old DINER like. The service was good, the waitress was smiling and helpful and all of the other servers seemed to be happy. The reason that I rated them a three was because of the taste and price of the food along with the worn down dining room. If the place was updated, it would be great. If their prices matched the state of their building it would be great. If they do that I'll come back and change this to a five star. read more

We went on dates every weekend in Huntington Village, We both went to college on the North Shore but in all reality, I grew up on the south shore. We're seated next to a painting by J. Varney. I like that, this place as some heart. My kids order kids meals, hamburgers with some pretty good french fries! We start with soups, I ordered Manhattan style and my wife orders seafood bisque. (They were out of Block Island) My wife orders whole clams. OMG! They tasted fresh and were really good. I ordred the Broiled Bay Scallops that came with a pasta, rice or something else. I wasn't feeling any of that so I let my little guy dig into some of it and brought the rest home, The Scallops were broiled but just sitting in a pool of butter. It was just ok, I wasn't impressed. I had to go thru Patchogue Village to get home. It was a nice feeling to see the town again but I wont be back to Varneys. read more

I actually went and had lunch with a friend today, the restuarant wasn't busy but have been here a couple times in the summer , the service was great and food came out perfect and timing was great as well as the hostess great conversation . I have been going to Varney's for over 34 years since high-school. They are friendly and the portions of food are fantastic. Burgers are awesome and all of the seafood. Surprisingly I loved this place! Stopped in randomly after seeing a sign saying they have lobster rolls. I was hungry so I figured I would give it a try. The bartender/ waitress, Nikki, was very friendly. I told her that it was my first time there and she explained the specials they had and what they are known for. She said that a lot of people come in for the mussels and lobster rolls. I tried the mussels in red sauce! Omg, they were so perfect. I'm getting hungry just thinking about how good the mussels were. I had the chicken parm hero for my entree. It was good too! The reason for 4 and not 5 stars: they have an unpaved parking lot filled with rocks, I rather not run my tires over dirt roads. I noticed a lot of files in the dinning room. I'm guessing from the frequent opening and closing of the front and side doors; however, they should be killed or trapped because it is gross to have files in your restaurant. Another one for the "old Long Island" files... Classic spot & a no-brainer when in the Bellport area. The seafood soups are always great and you must get the clam chowder if they are available. Kitchen has a particularly great hand with clams whether baked, on the half shell or when offered (all to rarely) on aforementioned soups. Overall excellent comfort food, particularly the seafood but also with classics like chicken parmesan. Portions are gigantic. Staff is relaxed and friendly and you can see them treating the regulars with all the extra love and attention that any great places shows theirs. Not the faintest trace of attitude or pretentiousness could be found anywhere near the vicinity, a great place to hit on the way to or from the Hamptons and better food than you will find pretty much anywhere out there (excluding Montauk). read more

I love this place so so so much. Great food, great everything. Until Thursday 5/27 when I stopped in to pick up food to go for my mother. I sat at the bar to wait for my food and when I paid the tab I left a really good tip... then my food came and the woman made me feel like absolute crap because she didn't believe that I paid my tab. Not sure what happened there, why she didn't believe me since the signed check was right in front of me, but she made me feel like absolute crap. Let me say first that we've been coming to Varney's for many years. Though not so much with the pandemic and all. So not having gone for awhile I expected the same consistent quality we've always gotten. The first thing I noticed was the limited amount of specials on the blackboard. I chose from the limited list and got the Codfish Grenoblaise. What a disappointment! The fish was not fresh- looked frozen and refrozen. In fact, I had to ask the waitress if there was a chef in the kitchen. The dishes texture seemed like it was frozen and reheated in a microwave. I was extremely disappointed. This place is a hidden gem. I had the baked clams and hot lobster roll, both recommended by my server. The food was perfect and the service was outstanding and friendly. I travel all over this country, this was some of the best food I have had anywhere and a perfect example of a local establishment that the big chains will never be able to duplicate. New to the area and was excited to try the muscles here, as someone said they were great. My husband and I decided to split a lobster roll and an order of muscles, baked clams to start. If you like bacon and butter, you'll love the clams. Personally, I prefer my baked clams to taste like clams. We ordered the hot buttered lobster roll. Roll was toasted and buttered, lobster was chewy and flavorless. Biggest disappointment were the muscles. Although abundant, there was very little red sauce, and the pasta underneath was swimming in a puddle of water. The aluminum wrapped bread they brought us was burnt on the bottom. A $2 charge on my bill is a mystery. Think it was for the water? 1 Beer, 1 wine 1 water, lobster roll, muscles and bread...just under $90. Definitely not worth it. read more

It's a small, local restaurant that has a pretty limited seafood menu, I was expecting more options upon entering. Our waitress was very polite and was really good about giving us time to decide what we wanted to eat, as me and my fellow foodie could not make up our minds for anything. We ordered the baked clams which were very basic, and the mussels with linguini which had a plain tasting sauce. The mussels were very fresh though! Great little place with a fresh menu of very good seafood classics. Plus pastas, hoagies and a great Duck. I had fresh broiled sea bass which was light and flaky. My husband and I just ate and left your restaurant. We were heading back to Greenlawn taking a leisurely ride along Montauk hwy when we passed Varney's. We wanted to have dinner but had no idea where to stop. Your parking lot was full so we made a u turn and came back. Are we glad we did... Everything was excellent. We had the chili, one of the best bowls we've had, seafood bisque was delicious and the mussels in white sauce were too. We ordered stuffed cod and the duck. Both great choices. This is the small local seafood restaurant. Every time I go, it's pretty crowded with local people. I recommend to order Baymen's best. It come with soup, bread, raw clams, baked clams and mussels. I have ordered salmon before but it wasn't good as shellfish. Baked clams didn't taste much clams. All the waitresses are nice and friendly. They are hard worker. read more

Last evening driving by i saw a big sign "Lobster Rolls" ran in to take it home, $22,00 I thought it better be good. It was not. First you get a tiny cup of cole slaw, and decent amount of fries, I had to supply my own ketchup, a small slice of pickle, the roll was stale, and the lobster salad, well let's just say there was none, it was a claw chopped up in mayo and vegetables in a leaf of lettuce, it had no taste, terrible, I felt I had been ripped off. There should have been at least one piece of the main part of the lobster, I recommend that the chef take some cooking lessons. read more

Where most people know each other, the owners greet everyone by their name, and most of the wait staff are children of friends/ family who are still in high school. Small, cozy place with a lot of fried seafood and some hamburgers for the kids and folks who are not looking for sea food. I like my sea food raw so I went with one of the few options - clams on the half shell. A dozen fresh local clams served on the half shell make a good start to any meal. Our group ordered three Bayman's platters - three baked clams, half a dozen clams on the half shell, and mussels in red or white sauce. The portion sizes are huge for $16.95. Mother-in-law ordered shrimp with artichokes which was delicious. Overall, this is a good place if you are looking for fried sea food at reasonable prices at a friendly neighborhood place. The alcohol selection is limited, some wines, beer, and basic spirits. Seating is limited, so be prepared to wait if you arrive during rush dinner time. read more

For the last few years I've had this place bookmarked. I finally had a chance to stop in and have to say the bad outweighed the good. I saw a fried fish dish on the menu for $12.95. Also seafood bisque which was a few dollars. Figured Id order those two items and keep the bill low. The waitress explained to me that it would be a mistake to not order the platter since it came with the soup and would basically save me money. The platter cost $21 or $22 (which we found out after the bill arrived). I don't know what kind of math she was doing, but I believe we basically paid an extra $5 for no reason. The seafood bisque had a nice flavor but was lacking the normal items you'd expect to find in a bowl. Perhaps they gave me a bad scoop? The portion of fish I received was enough for 2 people. While this was nice, it didn't make up for the overpaying direction I was persuaded into going. Don't think I'll be back anytime soon. read more

Felt a little out of place. Service was a little cold to us. Friendly to locals, but not when we walked in with our family for lunch. Fried clam strips were delicious, but the broiled cod filet sandwich soaked through my bread. Everything fell apart and was super soggy. I didn't complain or ask for it to be taken away.
