This is the quintessential "neighborhood restaurant". Where most people know each other, the owners greet everyone by their name, and most of the wait staff are children of friends/ family who are still in high school. Small, cozy place with a lot of fried seafood and some hamburgers for the kids and folks who are not looking for sea food. I like my sea food raw so I went with one of the few options - clams on the half shell. A dozen fresh local clams served on the half shell make a good start to any meal. Our group ordered three Bayman's platters - three baked clams, half a dozen clams on the half shell, and mussels in red or white sauce. The portion sizes are huge for $16.95. Mother-in-law ordered shrimp with artichokes which was delicious. Overall, this is a good place if you are looking for fried sea food at reasonable prices at a friendly neighborhood place. The alcohol selection is limited, some wines, beer, and basic spirits. Seating is limited, so be prepared to wait if you arrive during rush dinner time. read more

For the last few years I've had this place bookmarked. I finally had a chance to stop in and have to say the bad outweighed the good. I saw a fried fish dish on the menu for $12.95. Also seafood bisque which was a few dollars. Figured Id order those two items and keep the bill low. The waitress explained to me that it would be a mistake to not order the platter since it came with the soup and would basically save me money. The platter cost $21 or $22 (which we found out after the bill arrived). I don't know what kind of math she was doing, but I believe we basically paid an extra $5 for no reason. The seafood bisque had a nice flavor but was lacking the normal items you'd expect to find in a bowl. Perhaps they gave me a bad scoop? The portion of fish I received was enough for 2 people. While this was nice, it didn't make up for the overpaying direction I was persuaded into going. Don't think I'll be back anytime soon. read more

Felt a little out of place. Service was a little cold to us. Friendly to locals, but not when we walked in with our family for lunch. Fried clam strips were delicious, but the broiled cod filet sandwich soaked through my bread. Everything fell apart and was super soggy. I didn't complain or ask for it to be taken away. Wow, what a disappointment. Service was extremely slow. My 2 friends and I went on a busy Saturday night and waited 30 minutes to be seated (not too bad). We were ready to order by the time we were seated but waited 15 minutes or so to order. We waited another 30 minutes just to get bread and then waited another hour to get our food! We were there for 2 and a half hours!! I ordered the butterflied shrimp for around $15. It was good but I only got 5 pieces of average-sized shrimp. Definitely not worth the price. My friends said the same - not worth the price. MAYBE the food gets 3 stars but the service and the amount of food dropped the rating down to 1 star. Never going here again. read more

Presently relishing in the tingles of anaphylactic shock in my throat, I'm going to rave about this hutch on the side of a lonely road, a true hole in the wall, a gem! My heritage of growing up on the Jersey bayshore demanded that I order the Bayman's platter, an unfairly generous meal. For about $15, I get a cup of clam chowder, half dozen clams on a half shell, three baked clams,and a mound of mussels. So here's the breakdown: -Rhode Island Clam Chowder tasted homemade and tons of clam. I prefer some tomato in mine, not just plain clam broth, but I guess it wouldn't be Rhode Island style then. Not the first time that state has been wrong. -Clams on half shell....not much to say here other than they were fresh, ergo, delicious. -Baked clams, crusty outside, warm inside...good but could have used a bit more clam bits inside. -A GIANT F----N HEAP OF MUSSELS! I asked if the red sauce was spicy. Waitress replied, "Not too much." I replied, "But I like spicy", she answered "Then we'll make it spicy!" And damn it was good. A fresh sauce with flavor i.e. garlic and spice, not too much to ask. (By the way, this exchange also denotes that the help was, in fact, helpful, although we were the only group in the place. This was my first visit to Varney's. It's essentially a small little place with about a dozen small tables with dated furnishings. Upon first glance at the place you'd probably think the food would be second rate. That is not the case. All of our meals were very very good. We also had the clams on the half shell appetizer. Clams seemed very fresh and cold. The one item which stood out (in a not so good way) from everything else were the baked clams. They were merely okay. If you prefer a baked clam that is somewhat bland with hardly a hint of clam you'd probably rate them very good. They were a two for one special so you got double the amount. Even with that being the case you'd probably better off with one of the other appetizers - mussels, clams or the like. We had heard that everything was cooked to order so we expected to wait a while. We were not prepared to sit there for at least 10 minutes before anyone came over to the table. It was quite busy at the time but there is no excuse for not even making the effort to come over to say hello or take a drink order. Service remained slow even after the restaurant had cleared out and it was just us and one other table which was occupied. And Kathryn and Patti are amazing, after the first time we were there, they knew our names and what we drink, we just adore them. We have gone when others are working and they are all great! My husband and I have been going to Cooky's for years. We loved their food! However, today we ordered an 8 egg omelet ( we have ordered this for years) and received an order of what looked like 4 eggs in our poor looking omelet. We know what an 8 egg omelet looks like and how heavy if should be. What we received was not. My husband told the cashier and even the manager. They did nothing about it at! I called the manager, the manager explained that they are now using eggs from containers... I guess this is their answer to why the omelet didn't look consistent with their usual product that they make and did not feel the right weight. Unfortunately, my husband was so displeased with his experience that we have decided that we will no longer do any business with Cooky's. Friendly service when I ordered takeout. Woman who took order was nice and helpful. I ordered the fried flounder with potato salad, my husband got chicken fingers and fries and my son ordered a chicken Parmesan hero. I was craving fried fish for a couple weeks and was super excited to finally get it. Unfortunately the fish had no taste. The breading had zero flavor. I had to put a lot of tartar sauce on the fish just to be able to semi enjoy it. It needs salt or something idk. Better breading maybe? Seasoned. The fries were good. Potato salad pretty good too. Husband said the chicken fingers were small but tasted good. He loved the fries. My son was happy with his chicken parm hero. His exact words were "it was really freaking good" lol. Went strawberry picking nearby and called to see if they could fit our group of 11. They said yes and we drove over and had a nice lunch. We kept commenting to each other that it had the beach town restaurant feel to it. The staff and service was very good. Food was decent--we loved the hot buttered bread, and the fried whole clams were good. I had the Bayman's best and that was a nice sampling of 4 different things. Went there for a couples dinner. Had the chicken parm & my wife had the Mussels/white sauce with linguini. Both dishes were really good. The other couple with us had the Mussels/red sauce with linguini & the fried flounder. Again they enjoyed there's as well. Definitely a go back spot for us! Kinda sad experience. Service was great. Had the fried fish combo $17.99. Paid $2 extra for flounder. Wife had the famous mussels. A sad night for seafood. My platter was flavorless. This is a list of reasons why I would not return to this restaurant: 1.service was inexperienced 2.food was low quality 3.over cooked 4.over priced for such a small place 5.food was not served at the same time-everyone was eating at a different time 6.alcohol drinks extremely overpriced and very small 7.would not recommend unless your desperate for a place to eat It had been many years since we last visited this restaurant. Although, the menu had gone from burgers and sandwiches to seafood, which is not locally caught, which is most likely purchased frozen and is served at very high prices. A local family owned restaurant that does not service the average local community that cannot afford such high prices. They depend on the local elites that do not know the difference between price and quality. We need fewer greedy local shop/restaurant owners to help the communities and the families in it by keeping the prices affordable to all. read more

Surprised to be disappointed with this place, as I've heard nothing but good things. Walked in at 9:15pm and was immediately told they were closing soon(10pm posted close). Ordered a pink lemonade, which was def pink, but not lemonade. Sent it back. Ordered simple fried bay scallops and fries. Scallops were majorly soggy, swimming in oil. This place is exactly my type of place. It's cozy, reasonable prices, casual (meaning I can wear my hoody and jeans with sneakers). Kinda like a diner atmosphere. The food was over the top and sooooo fresh!! Waitress were on point and quick! We had shrimp cocktail to start and when I say fresh...wow!! The shrimp were medium size but they ga e you quite a few of them!' Then we order onion soup and boyfriend ordered baked clams again awesome! They gave us buttery bread that was perfect to sap up the extra garlic butter under the clams. Then had grilled chicken wrap and he had a cod fried fish sandwich. Both perfectly made. Ordered up the Bayman's Best (white) with manhattan clam chowder and the fried clam strips app ($22.50 minimum). There was some miscommunication throughout the meal; though service was friendly, it was very inconsistent and strongly favored the other two filled tables (filled, coincidentally, with regulars). Cozy little old-school joint but a borderline-painfully-long experience for the # of courses. That said, food was very tasty, especially the white wine sauce for the mussels (sopped up with bread) and the baked clams (which I'd recommend the BOGO deal for next time).
