Mussels gone wild....mussels in red sauce YUMMO. Service was adequate.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. It's out of the way and small but the food is amazing. The shrimp tastes like the caught it that day. Mussels r great. But my fav of all is the hot open Rebecca. Oh the high hopes I had for this place. This is a very small restaurant. Maybe 12 tables, so expect to wait if you come during peek times. Small doesn't bother me though, some of my favorite eateries are mom and pop owned. We were seated fast and order was taken promptly. We order a fried shrimp dinner and quiet honestly I've had better shrimp at Red Lobster. Not that the shrimp itself was bad but I was hoping on so much more from this local place. Also No salad or bread offered prior to the meal. And for what we paid for our dinners it should have at least come with rolls. Over all not a bad place to go on occasion but defiantly not on my top 20 list. read more

Decided to try it tonight. Had a restuarant.com coupon although that is not what prompted us to go. Long story short, would not go back. Took over 5 minutes for someone to even acknowledge us at the table, 7 minutes to get water after they finally came over. From time we ordered(soup,salad, entrees) it took 31 minutes to get my salad, only after I asked where is my salad. Never got the soup. Daughter fell asleep at table waiting. We cancelled the meal , paid for the mozzarella sticks we ordered and left. No real apology. Part of problem was multiple people working same table vs, owning certain tables from beginning to end. Was moderately busy but only people getting serviced were large tables. Can't even comment on food as we weren't there that long due to service. read more

Great no frills local eatery- many different types of fresh fish in the menu everyday, always good mussels and clams. At home we try to copy Varney's style hot loaf of bread with butter melted in between the slices... Sooo good! Typical submarine iceburg lettuce salad, but always a classic good piece of fish at a great price. read more

Great find on the way home from pumpkin picking. Casual, friendly, fresh food, and nice portions made this the prefect stop for dinner. Kids and adults were happy. Duck surprisingly crispy and delicious and Bay man's platter a perfect choice for seafood lovers. read more

Live nearby but had not eaten here in some time until last night. Now I remember why. Decent looking menu but prices are on par with a higher end seafood eatery which this place is not. Wait staff was nice enough but it took over an hour and a half for our meals to come out. No offer of a free drink or a couple of bucks off the bill. Most places will do something for you with this long a wait, not here. My wife had stuffed flounder, I had broiled sea bass. Both were on the bland side and overcooked. 2 mediocre meals and 2 beers for $68 bucks in this dump. Never again. read more

Living in Long Beach for well over 5 years, I find myself missing the quality, quantity and value of there Muscles in White over Linguini!! Superb and absolutely unbeatable leaving me to find the drive East well worth my time! Staff is polite and have customer care down pat, always packing the trays of my favorite dish in plastic lined boxes to ensure no spillage will affect my vehicle. Simple enough but we know most places can't be bothered! Throw in the little details like offering not to heat my bread to ensure soft freshness for when I get home to eat is just another sign of attending to individual customer needs! simple place for simply good eats! It can't be beat!!! Next trip I'm getting the T-shirt .... Eat local and when it's that good, drive to "eat local" as you pass those horrid chain restaurants, it's well worth it read more

Okay so me and my boyfriend usually go to this restaurant all the time because we loved the service and the food but, not until last night before we got served our drinks, one of the waitresses had the nerve to say that when we come here we don't tip well enough. Last time I checked, the tip was at the discretion of the customer. So now they just lost a loyal customer. read more

Varney's Restaurant has great food. My family and I have been going there for over 10 years. The mussels in red sauce are the best I've had. If you like salmon, try the salmon francaise- it is outrageous and ORIGINAL. They have different types of fish on the menu which they make however you want it- if you just ask. Spicy or cajun is the best! For the price this IS the best place in the area to eat. 20-25 bucks is what you will spend for a dinner that comes with a soup (or salad). A previous review I just read mentioned other places in the area that are comparable in price to varney's. This is erroneous. I have dined several times at other places in the area and their menus are a la carte, so a salad/soup is 7-10 bucks more and an entree is NOT 20 bucks. varney's is a casual place for a great meal or lunch. If you are looking for fine dining, hit somewhere else. read more

This place is amazing have nothing ba to say the seafood is great and always fresh. i highly recommend this location.

We saw the reviews and decided to go in. We were seated almost immediately. Wasn't crowded at that time. We placed our orders and waited and waited and waited. Mine came with a salad, if you can call it that, mine had the lettuce core in it. Then we waited and watched as another table got plate after plate of food. Their waitress noticed us with nothing and apologized and she finally had someone send over bread. After an hour of waiting the food arrived. It was ok and was a decent amount but half way through mine I FOUND A HAIR IN MY FOOD. It wasn't mine, different color. Our waitress only came by once to ask how things were going. When a bus girl came to ask if we were finished and I explained about the hair she looked like she only understood yes or no and just took the plate. The other waitress had come over and I explained the situation, she was kind enough to have it removed from our bill but had to tale the hair over to the manager (maybe to have it tested forensics or what I don't know.) won't be back though. read more

Call before you go !! Although they're hours for Fri. night is posted as closing at 10:00 p.m. as soon as we arrived we were rushed to order as they decided to close at 9:00 due to slow business. .....I wonder why. Quickly ordered (still waited quite a bit for the food) but luckily, we utilized the wait time to observe the filthy dirty surroundings. We sat close to the service counter. YUK !! Where to being... the floor looked as if it hasn't seen a mop or bleach in about a year. The utensils (I refuse to call silverware) must have dated back to 1955. The dirty disgusting glasses had either hard water deposits of 15 years or greasy grime from years of build up from the fried food. The pitchers for either soda or water probably contain listeria or E.coli by now. They're no longer clear in color...more like brownish. The wait staff needs to wear gloves when crumbling chicken over a customers salad and perhaps not eat at the same time they prepare customer's food. The coaster plates had greasy film and stuck on food and the clutter of the old trinkets resembled that of the drinking glasses. I can't believe they actually have cloth on the tables along with glass top. Very deceiving. Needless to say, we got the hell out of there before the food came. I have an idea Varney's........ CLEAR EVERYTHING OUT, DISINFECT AND START AGAIN !!! Would have given Zero (0) stars for filth, but at least one was required to post. read more

They are awesome!! I want to eat their mussels in white wine sauce right now. My friend, Allison, enjoyed eating mussels in red win sauce, so please chose your sauce. Mussel dishes are to die for, if you like sea food. Please do not worry, they serve enough italian bread to soak up "very goooooood sauce". Table services by ladies are very good. I have met three ladies. They are very nice. If you like shellfish, I recommend Baymen's best for first timers. I cannot wait to get back there. A few months back my mom and I got take out here.... Not good, it was greasy and disappointing. Can't speak as to the atmosphere or anything considering we got take out. But from the outside the place is tiny. I'm not sure if it was just an off day but I feel like it's not really worth it. Especially considering it wasn't per say cheap. Two words, uncontrollable diarrhea. What kind of place has an infestation of flies in the middle of winter? The amityville horror house? No. The answer is varneys restaurant. The amount of flies landing on us while reviewing the menu should have been a clear indication to "GET OUT" Food was doused in butter and they had floating mold in the vinegar, and to top it off it needs an entire makeover including clean silverware. She had the white, I had the red. The tastiest and freshest tasting seafood I ever had. The prices are very reasonable, the portions are large and the service is excellent. This used to be our favorite hidden gem but went last month with some friends and it was more than disappointing . The duck was so dry and chewy, the seabass looked more like tilapia but was very fishy the only good thing was the mussels but it was served with half cooked bread. As we left I noticed a sign on the front window saying they need kitchen help so I'm wondering if that's why they are headed downhill. read more

All the soup choices are delicious. I've tried them all. Once in a while I will treat myself to the mussels. Tasty. My favorite lunch is the linguini with white clam sauce. I usually go to the specials board for variety. I haven't tried dinner yet, but recommend the lunch specials. The service is always friendly. read more

This is my new favorite place to go to with my family on weekends. The seafood is clearly fresh and the people there are friendly. It was recommended to me by my sailing instructor who happens to be one of the best in the area. Mussels were great specially when I dunk my break in the sauce. So I'm constantly disappointed by restaurants that have inviting décor, amazing food presentation, and terrible service. I finally made my way here after hearing how great the food is. I went on a Wednesday afternoon (missed mussel Tuesday) and literally at two meals by myself. I hate when I go out and the food makes me feel like a ate a dinosaur after two bites. This food was fresh, well cooked, and tasty. Even the bread was good! I wasn't disappointed! I came when the waitresses were changing shifts, and I had the pleasure of being served by both. Service is a little slow, so don't go if I a hurry, but to sit in the little house and chill is awesome...but that is only complaint. They are friendly and the mussels are to die for. I can never decide on white or red and if I get white, I bring the extra sauce home, make pasta the next day and pour it over the top for garlicky goodness. YUM! The Bayman's catch is a great deal and by the way, the duck is also delicious. When it comes to the table, it smells so good that neighboring tables want some of what you got. read more

We call this the clam place but feel free to order anything because it is all good. They have the best linguine with clam sauce anywhere. I have stopped trying to make it because they make it better! Plus you can choose white or red (ask for it spicy like fra diavlo and wow) The seafood here is always good, the muscles are excellent but it is easy to fill up on them and the bread they serve with it! They also -unexpectedly-have some of the best chili around. Baked french onion soup which (we order in the winter). Italian specials also good but HUGE-shrimp scampi or amazing chicken parm. The one and only time we had room for dessert it was a killer mud pie! The restaurant is small and come as you are. They have great beer on tap. Waitresses are all nice. Food is prepared when you order so do not expect it fast ! It takes time to make good food. Order some baked clams, ice cold beer and the wait will seem like nothing. read more

I heard about this place from a waitress that had come into my tanning salon and a customer that goes to the restaurant. They were having a conversation about knowing each other and this was their thing in common. As they went on and on how great it was i knew that i definitely had to try it . This is what they said.. The place was small , not at all fancy , the food was great , good prices and big portions and the mussels were the best ever . We called and called to see if it was a reservation type of place , but i do not think they answer the phone ..and since i have been there i know why .. they would be on the phone all day .. The place was as packed as could be , with a few people waiting . We were told 15 - 20 minutes.. We ordered a drink at the bar / food counter and was told we could sit outside on the porch .. It was a little porch , nice and quiet .. before i had finished my wine we were called in to sit . the bread was nice and soft and warm .. she gave us extra melted butter , I ordered the mussels with white sauce and the shrimp with artichoke .. I usually do not love mussels ,once i get to the one that taste like bay bog i could not eat more .. but here i ate every single one of these mussels and my husband was loving them too. After we were done , the juice was so good we had to do something with it .. we dunked all the rest of the bread.. my husband said you want to take that home you can drink it .. (( joking ) and the waitress came over and asked us if we wanted to pack it up , everyone does.. So i did .. when My meal came i was already a little full .. but i cleaned my plate.. it seriously was the best food i have had in a long time if not ever .. The waitress was one of the older women there .. I am sorry i did not get her name .. but she was awesome , great attitude and made you feel so comfortable .. i will def go back .. read more
