Growing up, this was always our go-to bakery for birthday cakes. We always order a mocha cake. We even had a 2 tiered mocha cake for my Engagement party years ago. Although quality & deliciousness have improved, their cakes are significantly smaller than in the past and inflation of prices. But, I guess that's everywhere! I feel that this location offers cakes that are more fresh compared to the other Van's bakeries. I suggest getting there early in the morning, call in the morning to reserve a cake, or come 1-2 days ahead to place an order in person to get the freshest cake possible. Oh. My. God. My friend told me there was a Van's bakery in their shopping center. I have been here dozens of times and never saw it. When I walked in I was greeted by a large display stand of beautifully decorated cakes and fruit tart cakes at that! My favorite! I saw the individual sized fruit tarts and knew at once what I was getting they make 2 types of fruit tarts. Went here to get a napoleon fruit cake for my 40th birthday and was so disappointed. The Philo part was not crunchy, it was more soggy and while my husband was eating his piece of cake and we saw several pieces of the strawberry that looked like this. Friendly staff. Ordering cakes from Van's for 15 years. I visit this and the Brookhurst locations. Ladies were extremely helpful when I stopped in recently for a last minute strawberry fruit cake from the frig. I asked for shaved almonds and they said they could put it on if I did not mind waiting. It was 20 minutes before closing. I find that level of service a rarity. We usually come here during lunar new year but this time we got a birthday cake for our nephew. His mom got her wedding cake and loved the strawberry cake. We were going to get just a slice as a "smash cake" but they had several sizes. So we went with the smallest mini cake. It's very basic decoration with either blue, pink, white, or yellow icing. Since he's a boy, I wanted blue but it turns out blue is blue berry flavor. To get strawberry, it had to be pink. Depending on the season and holiday, you'll find other pastries throughout the store. This time around it's endless moon cakes! I love that you can get a single one and try different flavors instead of getting the ones in the box of four. Luckily this place was not crowded because places in OC don't seem to follow COVID procedures. No one does the social distance and people touch the packages and put them back. I'm not proud of how viet business are careless. You can argue that it's like a grocery store but this is a bakery. For that, I knocked down a star. However, the baby loved the cake. Inside was chocolate cake with strawberries. It's light, fluffy, and not too sweet. Parking here is atrocious. I bought a slice of pandan cake ...its old and dry. I feel this place sells old bakery items. I also bought a taro bun. Its the only fresh item here since its warm and seems fresh enough to pass as new...it taste okay...nothing special. I also asked for a plastic spoon to eat my cake and the cashier had to thoroughly look into my bag and make sure I didn't have a spoon. She kept on arguing with me about one plastic spoon! This is a review for their wedding cakes They are inexpensive and decorated the way you like. I got a red velvet cake here and estimated for 150 people. They quoted us and the price was less costly than anywhere I had visited in the area. They were really easy. I wanted 3 dozen white roses on my cake. They told me to have someone bring it the day before with a photo of exactly what I wanted. They asked me what time I wanted the cake by and for the day of it arrived exactly on time. The cake was exactly as I wanted and even better. The only downfall was that the cake was a little titled. No one noticed it but I did. Overall, all my guest loved the cake. At Van's they let you rent their cake stand, which they credit you back your $50 when you return it. No other cake places in the area will do that. Although their shop isn't as beautifully decorated and their cakes on display might be hideously decorated, they are experienced and have been doing what they do for forever. They are pros. Just give them a photo or map out the design you like and they will have it right. My biggest complaint about Vans was no cake tasting. I had to buy their red velvet cake to see if it was what I hoped. In the end, cake tasting or none, I was extremely happy I went with them. read more

Wow, a sign I am getting old. How does this place only have 11 reviews and four stars? Proof people take the good things, even if they are right in their back yard, for granted..until it's too late. What I love about Asian businesses is that although they tout themselves as one sort of vendor, in reality, they sell a variety of things. Take Van's Bakery for instance. Not only do they have 'European style cakes' (with an Asian twist), cakes made to order including wedding cakes, but they also have a bunch of other snacks such as sweets, beef jerky, candy, and much much more. I wish I had read K N's review before going in because I love soursop juice. I used to drink them when I lived in southeast Asia. I would actually give this bakery a lower rating if it wasn't for their fruit cake with custard. One of my favorite cakes to get and eat. First off, parking is sometimes a nightmare here. It's a busy area with lots of people walking around and sometimes the drivers here don't understand yielding or who has the right of way. Smh. Any who, they have a variety of cake options, smoothie options, and single-serving cake slices in addition to a whole bunch of other Vietnamese treats and snacks. 90% of the time I'm here to get their fruit cake with custard. They have different types of fruit cakes such as the one with flan, which I wouldn't recommend. Flan isn't as smooth as I'd like and egg flavor is too strong. The fruit cake with flaky crust and custard is just amazing. I can eat a whole cake myself over a few short days and wouldn't get tired of it. It's definitely my cake for birthday celebrations, holiday parties, or just because I want to be a fatty. lol. They have different sizes ranging from $20ish to $45ish. The service is questionable. Sometimes I get a nice lady and sometimes I get a lady who talks gibberish to me. For instance, last time I was here I was buying a fruit cake and it was the last one in the size that I needed. Even though there was a small ant on it, I was willing to buy it but I had to point it out to the worker. She bluffed me off saying that it was just seeds from the kiwi slices but it wasn't. An ant has 3 main body parts and 6 legs. I saw a head, a thorax, and abdomen with 6 legs. A kiwi seed is not an ant. I ended up just taking the ant off myself. Your standard run of the mill Vietnamese bakery. If you are ever in need of a cake or flan in hurry Van's always has plenty. They also have almost any Vietnamese baked good you can think of so it's a solid go to. However, location isn't ideal the parking lot is always crowded and you can almost never find parking so you can imagine how the bakery is inside. It's chaotic and a bit overwhelming. It's not the bakery's fault but it does make your experience not very enjoyable. Lastly, the service is subpar...as traditional Vietnamese vendor can be. They rush you and just want to make as many sales as possible...it's a bit frustrating when trying to make decisions, and even trying to get their attention when it is busy. read more

However, as I was taking pictures of the beautiful cakes they had behind the glass to post on Yelp, one of the cashier ladies jumped right in front of me and repeatedly asked if I could be helped.
