I came here to pick up pate chaud. $2 each for either chicken or pork. Chicken are square shaped and pork are triangle shaped. I've eaten MANY pate chaud (including my Mom's homemade). 'Iced Ca Phe Sua Da': Really strong and perfectly sweet Vietnamese Coffee! There's a lot of ice, but I like it because it's meant to allow you to slowly savor the drink so it's not too strong. My boyfriend and I were in the area and I was looking for a coffee shop. He recommended gala coffee. The last time I was there was in 2014. I remember that gala was my go to spot for coffee. The BEST pate chaud, we were brainstorming places for a light snack with morning drinks and our vietnamese friends eyes lit up when I was reading Gala off the list of some places I had bookmarked. They vouched for the chicken and pork pate chaud as well as the banh mi. Unfortunately they had no bread today so we were not able to try the banh mi. Good news is we were able to try 6 each chicken and pork as well as their baos. Pork pate chaud, very large triangle puffed pastry. The meat is super well seasoned and is stunning. I left some for a Japanese relative picky about food and she loved it. The chicken one is the size of the pork pate chaud at other places and I liked it more since it felt more bite sized and not so large. Same insanely good meat seasoning as the pork, this is my new favorite. Baos were good, the quail egg ones were very fresh today. I didn't like the ultra thin layer on bottom of the bao because it felt like the meat was going to fall out so I ate them upside down. read more

This is our go-to bakery for pate chaud every time we stay overnight in OC. We would wake up and bring back a dozen for breakfast. The pate chaud is moist, juicy, the puff pastry is consistent and not dry or broken or oily. The chicken is made in a square shape and the pork is in a triangle. I prefer the chicken over the pork. Both meats are very flavorful but the pork is oily and a bit more salty. I also prefer the chicken because it's in a square shape. You get the equal proportion of meat and puff pastry. Whereas, the triangle pork shaped is airy, my meaning of bready because the pork is in the center so you'll have to bite through each corners of just bread before you can get to the meat. If the pork was made into a square shape, then I wouldn't mind. The chicken is cheaper at $1.35 each versus pork at $2.15 each. I also tried the chocolate croissant. It's the rectangle shaped not triangle croissant shaped. The chocolate was evenly distributed throughout and not so sweet but I feel something is missing with the outer shell. Eating the pate chaud fresh out the oven is the best. Parking here is limited but people do leave rather quickly to pick up and leave. They sell beverages like Vietnamese coffee, mung bean, and mung bean with pandan as well as Vietnamese sandwiches, sweets, and other items found on the counter. read more

Let me just say, yummy yum yum! I travel from the Bay Area and as always, a Must Do pit stop at my favorite Bakery in all of Irvine. Mung bean drinks, Pate Chaud and Vietnamese Coffee is to perfection. Must be a family secret recipe here because there's no other Bakery that serves such a delicious treat. I love the vietnamese coffee here. It's strong without being too bitter and has a creamy, velvety taste. However, the amount of coffee to ice ratio is ridiculous for the price ($3.25). You pay over $3 for 1/4 cup of coffee and 3/4 cup of ice! The chicken pate chaud ($1.25) is also smaller here compared to other places. The pork pate chaud ($1.85) is slightly bigger but the filling is tiny compared to the amount of puff pastry. I honestly do no understand how this place had such high reviews. First, let's start with the Pate Chaud, the meat is wayyy too weirdly sweet. Why did they add so much sugar to this? The pastry is fine, light, and buttery, but once you hit the meat it is kind of off-putting. I asked for less sweet Vietnamese coffee, and it was still tasting like I was about to take a fast pass to Diabetes world. Now for the last part, I was one of the first customers there right at opening- and the lady was in the back. I called out, rung the bell - and nothing. Whatever they were doing in the back, they did not see me through their security camera or hear me. It took about 5 minutes before she even appeared. Then when I ordered about 12 pate chaud, she was giving me an attitude about whether they can all fit into one box or not. - Like chill, who woke up on the wrong side of the bed? Needless to say, service was terrible and food was not great, so will not be back. If you want good Pate Chaud, you're better off going to Banh Mi and Che Cali. Our go-to place for Pate Chaud. What's Good: The Pork Pate Chaud and the Chicken Pate Chaud. Get a couple of each for yourself and maybe a dozen more so you don't have to share. Gala's version is a step above the rest in OC, mostly because of the meat. Super juicy and flavorful. Balances well with the puff pastry, which is layered so crunchy on outside and chewy on the inside. All without being oily. The Chicken Pate Chaud ($1.50) is the typical square shape and smaller than the Pork Pate Chaud ($2.25) which is a larger triangle shape. It's a matter of preference between the two, so can't rate one over the other. They hold well too, so popping it in the oven for day-after breakfast is a good option. Other Notes: There's 2 locations and this is the bigger of the two. The other one is smaller and next to Dong Phuong Tofu, which we love, so go there mostly. read more

Came here on the basis of a recommendation from my cousin. We wanted iced coffee and when we got here, it's a small shop with the basics, nothing fancy looking. There's a case with pastries and other desserts. We got 6-7 pastries and 3 iced coffees. The service is wicked fast. Coffees are premade and in the fridge, already in trays of 4. So since we ordered 3, she just took one out and we were good to go. The coffee is really good. It's not too bitter for drip coffee, but not overly sweet either. Just a good coffee overall. So good, my husband prefers this over the bigger local chain's coffee. The pastries are good. Found out we got 6 chicken pastries and 1 pork. The pork is good, it's what I usually get. The best pate chaud I've ever had! Flaky. Buttery. Savory. How can you go wrong with mini meat pies?! This bakery does it right. I love both the chicken and pork fillings. The meat is perfectly seasoned and fits right inside this shell of layers on layers of puff pastry. It isn't dry or too oily, just the right level of juiciness. This is my family's go-to spot for pate chaud and we always take at least a dozen back home to the Bay. I've only tried the chicken pastry here as well as the baguette. The baguette here is better than the one at Pierre. The one at Pierre is only good while warm. The one here, though, makes a mess when you try to eat it, is still good when cold. The chicken pastry is really tasty -- I would definitely eat this again. When your baguette is day old, just toast it in the toaster after you've sliced it in half -- only for a minute as it browns pretty quickly -- and make a sandwich using that.... pretty darn good. Banh Mi, Cafe Sua Da and Desserts! I am going to have to agree with Christina that this place is not the same anymore. I stopped by last week and didn't quite feel the same about it. But, this is just my opinion. Several of my friends love this place. They love the banh mi and the ice coffee. As far as the banh mi, I would prefer going to Thanh Tam on Euclid, Banh Mi Che Cali down the street (Brookhurst/McFadden) or Top baguette. I read some of the posts. I am not a fan of Gala's Cafe Sua Da. It is sweet. Again, Banh Mi Che Cali is down the street. Plus, theirs is stronger. There are a couple of other places a prefer for cafe sua da also.
