Wow wow wow! This is hands down one of the nicest restaurants in Napa. We celebrated a birthday in this beautiful rustic family owned restaurant and couldn't have been happier with the service and food. The owner even came by our table to say happy birthday. Food is exquisite - must get the scallop pastry for the table, the garden salad was very special and not my typical thing, steak delicious and the pork chop a good contender to mustards grill which is my favorite. Snicker pie for dessert a must! Loved the fresh roles out of the oven and as many as you'd like. What an experience! We were out exploring Healdsburg for the day and asked someone which restaurant they recommended in the area. No hesitation; they said Valette, and off we went. We were fortunate to be seated promptly, as they had space for us at the bar on this very busy Saturday evening. This space is truly stunning and welcoming, with ample indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant buzzed with lively energy, creating a vibrant atmosphere that was contagious. We ordered the Fava Green Pesto & Burrata, Scallops en Croute, and Liberty Duck Breast, awarding each dish a perfect 5/5. The real standout to me was the Scallops en Croute with Jack Herron's Wild Fennel Pollen, White Sturgeon Caviar, and a Champagne Beurre Blanc nestled inside a puff pastry topped with squid ink. A very popular dish. Their menu is fun, captivating, and meticulously designed. We were also celebrating my birthday week, and the servers were kind enough to bring me a slice of cake with a candle and a signature Valette birthday card--a thoughtful touch. We were in Healdsburg for a short 2 day visit as it's been years since we've been back. This was our fav restaurant of the 2 places we dined for dinner over 2 days and was our favorite. I would have been happy eating here both nights. The place is casual and staff is friendly but restraint. We started with their rolls which were very good. Hubby really liked his duck which was tasty and very tender compared to the duck I had the night before elsewhere. My black cod was cooked perfectly and the chimichurri sauce with it was wonderful. From the moment we walked in we were delighted. We had an amazing table (half moon booth) in the middle. Our server was Frank he gave excellent recommendations as well as wine pairings with our choices. We started with a couple of cocktails. I had the Bees Knees a delicious gin lemon and honey cocktail while my boyfriend had a clase azul reposado with a large rock. We started our food tour with the Sonoma organic salad and it was so light and refreshing paired with the 2017 Stone-street "Upper Barn" Chardonnay. Then off to the mains. My boyfriend ordered the Charred Prime New York Steak and it was melt in you mouth amazing. Frank knew we needed a wine that would really bring out the flavors of the steak so he brought us an amazing red. I will need to call but I think it was a Chev. ( I will update when I find out the wine) And now I'd like to reply to Eric's review of how he thought the scallops were "fake" and terrible, perhaps he wasn't at the restaurant we were dining. At Valette these scallops were hands down the most amazing dish with scallops I've ever had. I've only had them prepared grilled or seared in the past and these are more a steamed in flavors that will make your pallet dance for days. It arrives in a puff pastry then they crack it and pour a wonderful White Sturgeon Caviar - Champagne Beurre Blanc into the dish (pictured below). We were honestly so thrilled with our wine and meals we didn't think of dessert and then Frank shows up with the Bread, Butter and Jam Fresh Homemade Jam - Toasted Brioche Salted Brown Butter Ice Cream (think bread pudding on a completely elevated level). This is the master's elite of toasted brioche. Cookies N' Cream Cocoa 'Truffle' - Whipped Crème Fraiche Volo Chocolate Shortbread. This was another delicious treat. Everything was so amazing I can't say enough of how much we enjoyed everything from the ambiance, to service and definitely the food. We recently celebrated my mom's 90th birthday here and had a wonderful meal! Everything was topnotch, from the warm greeting we received by everyone upon arrival, to the personalized menu with birthday greeting, to the birthday card my mom was presented with her complimentary (fantastic!) snicker bar dessert, our terrific table, and the food... omg the food! Two of us had the porkchops. They were cooked to perfection with a lovely glaze and accompaniments. My sister had the steak and was very happy! We ordered the chocolate dessert and shared the extra one they brought for mom. It was a very special evening due in large part to the restaurant going out of their way to ensure we were happy. This restaurant has been hyped up for us, so we were excited to finally try it. We were a bit early (only 10 minutes) and we were invited to sit at a bench, not at any of the open bar seats while we waited...um, ok? Anyhow, when we were finally seated, it was fine. Water was provided quickly (and continued to be the whole service.) The wine list comes out on a tablet-nice to have, but given this is Healdsburg, the selection was smaller than I expected. We each went with a glass of the restaurants own Chardonnay. It was nice, light and smooth bodied. Anyhow...in looking at the menu, we were going back and forth between a few things. Our server recommended the tasting menu, so as to be able to try a bit of everything. We went back and forth and settled on that-along with adding a foie gras supplement. They also were able to accommodate for my Celiac. So. We had: Kobe beef tartare with black truffle and peppercorns Ahi Poke Style Foie Gras with a blackberry compote and cashews (supplement) Day Boat Scallop w champagne burre blanc Sunchoke soup with beets Alaska Halibut with asparagus Duck Breast over wild rice Wagyu NY steak The presentation was lovely on all the dishes. The flavors were underwhelming. The tartare and the foie were my favorite dishes. The soup was interesting-I love sunchokes, and puréing them was definitely a new was to try them. Our halibut and duck were over cooked. Additionally, the steak, which should have been served medium rare, at most, was medium. ETA-my husband, who had the steak (and couldn't finish it!) asked me to add that it was actually a very tough cut, and he doubts that it was even wagyu. Given we get all our meat at home from a local butcher, I'm behind him on this. At this point, we were being offered dessert but we declined. I also want to point out, no where on the menu was it indicated that dessert would be one of the 5 courses we tasted...and we just realized that it was included in that. We are not huge dessert people, when we dine out, and I really feel that it should have been indicated that one of the courses was such, before ordering. So, in actuality we only had 4 courses (as the foie was supplemental.) Mr Valette coming around and saying hello and chatting was one of the nicer parts of our evening. He wished us happy anniversary and said something about getting a card....which the servers never gave us. A nice touch, if it had happened, which it didn't. We definitely will not be back. We enjoy spending on our money on great food and drinks (both Michelin level experiences and not!) and I was honestly disappointed I paid what I did, for what we got. The food was good: excellent presentation and well made, though, the service was just okay. My main issue was that the wine list was provided to our table on a hard to navigate app on a dirty iPad which is just sort of classless. I've seen this at other restaurants (usually chain restaurants in cities I don't want to be in while traveling for work) so I was disappointed to see this at Valette. The server didn't seem to know much about the wine (or had poor ability to communicate about the wine) and our drinks came out after we almost finished our first course. I am not dying to return. Made it sound like the restaurant was so popular and filled to capacity. When we arrived there were plenty of empty tables. The only dish that was good was the corn side dish. On this #ThankYouThursday2021 I must shout out one of my favorite Healdsburg restaurants, Valette! Owned by two local brothers, Executive Chef Dustin Valette and his brother Aaron Garzini, they are known near and far for their great food, wine, and service. Valette is our celebration restaurant (birthdays, anniversaries, visitors...they often do handwritten notes for special occasions and it's such a lovely, personal touch!). We loved them before the pandemic and we love them still. They pivoted during the pandemic and built a BEAUTIFUL parklet, complete with planters, heaters, and chandeliers. Silver lining of the pandemic: you can now dine inside or outside! The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. And the food...it's like a warm hug! A warm gourmet hug! A must get: Day Boat Scallops en Croute Jack Herron's Wild Fennel Pollen American Caviar - Champagne Beurre Blanc The tableside preparation is fun to watch and the dish is a treat for the tastebuds. Scallops...Beurre Blanc...need I say more? Just do it! My guy often goes for the Snake River New York Steak with roasted bone marrow or the Pork. I often order whatever fish is on the menu - think it was Halibut or Sole when I was last there - perfectly cooked! The accompaniments change seasonally and are always fresh, vibrant, and delicious. The wine list is full of awesome local options. We love the Aperture Bordeaux Red Blend, from right here in Healdsburg too. Make sure to save room for dessert. My five star review has one caveat. If the sun is out and it's 79 degrees or higher reserve and inside table. We sat at the bar rather than the outside. It was quite comfortable and Adrian our server was delightful, competent with a great attitude. Behind the bar there is a wine wall with top quality wines for every taste and pairing requirement. I recognized most but we had brought our own. In the future I would gladly select from the wall. The space itself is modern, rich and top notch. The service was beyond expectations. I've eaten at several Healdsburg restaurants one Michelin starred and none met the bar set by Valette. We ordered the "Cheff's Choice" with six courses and after each course the entire place setting was removed and a new one placed before us. Each dish presenter was a work of art. Two of us shared the six courses which allowed us to throughly enjoy and savor the complexity of each dish. With every course came an explanation of the ingredients with an opportunity to share our thoughts with Adrian post entré. At the risk of boring you I want to share our choices and pictures to prepare you for your future dinning pleasure. We started with Sashimi grade Hawaiian Ahi poke. Notable was Komi emulation and lightly grilled avacado, wow! Second was the Heirloom tomatoes and Burrata. Notable the home made focaccia and smoked tomato jam, delicious. Third Kobe beef tartar with Aussie Perigold Truffles and green pepper corns, unforgettable. Fourth Alaskan Halibut and Manila Clams. The picture shows it all, wonderful. Fifth came the Prime New York Strip Loin topped with chimichurri perfectly done full of flavor. And finally a fantastically flavorful rich yet light dessert accompanied by a capuchino, I know, never in the PM but this is Healdsburg not France! I was not disappointed. My husband got the special pasta that was on the menu and it was good, though I can't remember what it was. Made a reservation about a month out for a Friday night dinner at 8:45pm (no other times were available that far out). Amazing ambiance with dim lighting and overall intimate feel. Service was excellent. Extensive wine list with wonderful options. Started with the Ahi Poke which was sashimi grade and overall a must have! I had the pan roasted Mt Lassen steelhead and my wife had the New York strip steak. The steelhead came perfectly cooked with a savory crust. The steak (which I had to try) was prepared exactly as ordered with an amazing au poivre sauce on side (sauce was fantastic but the steak didn't need it...mouthwatering on its own). Sonoma and Napa are the land of quality fine dining and Michelin stars. It's like being in Las Vegas in some ways. The difference here versus Las Vegas, is that the food comes immediately from the farm to table and Michelin still awards areas in this area, they do not rate restaurants in Vegas. Why do I write all of that? This is the best meal you will have in wine county in a non Michelin star restaurant. You can have the same food and service experience as one for $100 with a glass of wine here! Your experience will begin with a visit from the dad of the sons who own and operate this restaurant. He may swing by and ask how things are going or make a recommendation. If he does, you're at a special table! You can begin with a lovely cockatiel or a glass of the finest wine you'll find north of San Francisco. We began with the charcuterie plate where the mustard was the star of an impressive cheese and cured meat plate. I had the ahi for my dinner and my husband had the cod. They tasted better than they looked and they were plated to perfection and too beautiful to eat. We had the It's Not a Snickers for dessert and fought over the last forkful. This place is amazing! Love that you can book on open table. We came once during covid and I remember it was awesome! Just went for Galentines day 2023... First super awesome you can book on open table. Very convenient. I realized we never got to see the inside before; it is somewhat dark but it totally sets the mood. Lovely modern playlist quietly plays in the background. We did the trust me menu again, and it did not disappoint. After our first course we asked if we could bump it up to 6 courses instead of the 5 minimum and they said no problem. 6 is the way to go I think; we did not leave hungry but 7 we would have been uncomfortably full and we didn't eat anything but a few strawberries all day ... Service was amazing! They always had someone making sure water was topped off, someone checked after each course was served we were doing okay. A+ service. All the food was amazing. Perfect seasoning, unique flavors that worked well together. My only tiff is that my scallop dish had just the one scallop! There was one dish that had a side salad where the aftertaste was black liquorish which neither of us were fond of, but we practically licked every other of the 11 plates. Neither of us could choose a favorite! The deserts are a perfect way to end the meal, and it's totally worth the splurge for French press coffee at the end. This was our first time in the area celebrating my birthday, we had just arrived in the Sonoma area and we stayed in Healdsburg and came here to Valente for dinner and it was the absolute best meal we've had on our trip! Frank, was our server, he helped us make all the right dinner choices.... Then, Shaun, one of the managers, gave us some stellar recommendations for the area. Super loud - The menu was ok, but we did not find anything creative other than the scallop appetizer and it was good. We felt rushed and the oddest thing happened. We were there for 1 hour and my husband was still picking away at his dish. The server came over and asked if there was a problem with his meal and we said no. The server then starting picking up dishes and putting plates on top of my husband's meal. He NEVER asked if my husband was done with his meal. The wait stuff sure tries to deliver on something that is way behind what the restaurant is trying to by. May be they are transitioning from an excellent solid restaurant to what is supposed to be "an experience ". Clearly not everyone sees it like me but I doubt any star would be hand out when I went. The confusion started with the waiter describing some of the menu items, some great dishes ..bla..bla...bla... and a side with "elevated" dishes. Very odd start. The waiter also kept pushing a handful of items that obsessively described each time he would come back to the table with those long memorized descriptions that did not make much sense. 2 of the most disappointing dishes were a "Mushroom risotto " that was basically boiled rice with a couple of blend mushrooms on top and foam of Parmesan cheese (and mascarpone?, not sure) that while smelled very very strong did not provide any flavor to the super bland rice. One of the dessert the waiter kept pushing was supposed to be like an elevated (he liked that word a lot) candy bar of sort and something we would have never had before. Desert was fine and I am pretty sure it was pretty much the same thing that was served at "chalkboard" just a few blocks away. The restaurant overall looks and feel great. There is an outdoor space we could not seat in due to the weather but that also seems very nice. The restaurant has a beautiful ambiance that is not too bright and not too dark. The table spacing was enough to not encroach on your neighbors' conversation. We began with a couple cocktails and moved to the "Try Me" tasting menu. It was absolutely delicious. We went with 5 courses and the food was plenty to share and timing between was perfect. What can I say? We were treated like royalty. At 3x the price, it would have been worth it! Tonight we basically came in to see if we could buy a bottle of their Oakville cab, which recently earned a 100pt rating, and we ended up staying for a dinner and then some... what a treat! I'm floating on a cloud. It's very cute and intimate inside, but we always prefer a bar, so we sat at the bar, which put us right next to the kitchen, which we enjoyed. The hosts, the wine guru Makenzie the bartender, the manager, even the gal buffing the wine glasses, all went out of their way to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. Both provide excellent service but John is our 1a and Alfredo is 1B. Definitely ask to sit in either of their sections. The food here is as amazing as the service. Vallette Restaurant is apparently one of the more popular fine dining options in Healdsburg; I say this because despite the fact that we made a dinner reservation almost three weeks in advance, the earliest start time we could get was at 5:00pm.  I have no regrets - this turned out to be a very small price to pay for the amazing dining experience we had here :-) We arrived at the time of our reservation and were seating almost immediately.  Service was impeccable throughout the meal; we didn't feel at all rushed.  On the contrary, it felt like we had the full attention of the staff without anyone hovering or interrupting our conversation unnecessarily. Now, would you believe that the food here is even better than the service?  It totally is! Our first course was their house-made bucatini pasta and the day boat scallops en croute.  Both dishes were beautifully presented and completely delicious; the pasta was my favorite of the two - it was creamy but still cooked perfectly al dente.  For our entrees we went with the duck breast and the Roasted Pepper Crusted Halibut.  Each of these dishes was nothing short of spectacular and quite unique. While our main meal was wonderful and also quite filling, we couldn't resist ending the evening with dessert - we opted for the ItsNotA 'Snickers Bar' and the Bread, Butter, and Jam.  Don't let the title of the latter fool you - it was absolutely decadent, and a lot more elaborate than the name implies. read more
