First time to Tisza -- absolutely charming place in Healdsburg. I'm not the biggest Eastern European food fan -- just heavier, overall, that I tend to like. But my friend wanted to try it and I figured I'd just have the burger. That was, however, until I saw the Debreciner sausage on the plate of the woman at the table next to ours, and I thought, "I WANT THAT." Beautiful cooked, slightly spicy, with two kinds of mustard: A stoneground and a homemade yellow mustard that was absolutely delicious. It came with a potato dumpling which wasn't my thing -- but even without eating the dumplings, the sausage itself was extremely filling. My friend got the chicken schnitzel, which came with fries -- I usually don't have schnitzel, again, because I find it a bit too heavy -- but my friend said it was lighter than one would think, as were the fries. No room for dessert -- but we definitely want to return to check out other dishes. Also, our server could not have been lovelier! In the main room you walk through when you enter is artwork you should definitely check out -- it was done by the father of the chef back in the 1970s. Really interesting, striking work! read more

My mom and I went to Tisza for lunch when visiting Healdsburg and WOW - we were blown away. We had the pretzel, Brussels sprouts, a gluten free chicken schnitzel and regular pork schnitzel and loved every bite. I haven't had schnitzel that good since a trip to Austria years ago. The two owners have put their hearts and souls into the restaurant and it shows. There were so many locals who said they come regularly because they're never had a bad meal at Tisza and I can see why they'd say that. We ventured out for something new and landed inside Tisza for a great meal. No reservations needed on the early side of Friday evening. We're seated inside after greetings by the hostess. Our waitress welcomed us, shared the nightly special and we ordered a 'plate to share', glass of wine and a beer. The octopus had a nice char, with good flavor and cook on the inside. The chorizo was a nice flavor contrast to it. Sausage platter was a great choice - providing the variety of meat flavors, paired with the acidity of two kinds of cabbage and a delicious dill pickle (reminded me of what my dad would make). Jagerschnitzel was delicious- crispy but juicy inside, topped with the savory mushrooms and complemented by the potato dumpling (looked like a potato but with wonderful texture.) We finished the chef's desert of the day - strawberry crème shortbread. Wow. Shortbread was warm, flaky and light, soaked up the fresh strawberries in their sweet syrup and not too sweet crème. As someone who is somewhat familiar with the Healdsburg dining scene, it came to my surprise that this place was not on my radar for the longest time. Thank goodness we finally got to come here because it felt as if this is a sort of restaurant that Sonoma County has been needing. To start off with, when it comes to my family, our party can be a little difficult in terms of finding space that can accommodate a wheelchair that can be in the way of staff or other patrons and also the particularness that my grandparents have with certain seating areas (i.e. feeling drafts or cold air, not being by the bathroom, etc). Although being here a handful of times, the staff has always gone above and beyond in listening and catering to our detailed seating issues and always providing excellent service. The food is pretty good here. We really enjoy coming for the dill cucumber salad as it's reminiscent of the one our grandmother used to make. We never leave here hungry! My husband and I were able to try the potato latkes, jägerschnitzel, and the prix fixe which at the time was ahí tuna tartare, roasted chicken, and apple strudel. The potato latkes comes with a huge plate of delicious smoked salmon topped with sauces and fresh herbs. It can definitely be shared between multiple people, but I wish it came with more of the actual latkes. "Central European roots with wine country creativity!" (From their website) I didn't know about Tisza when it was in Windsor, but what a unique new option to have in Healdsburg! And it's open on Mondays! My husband loves German food so made a reservation and dined in on Monday. We were pleasantly surprised to see them relatively busy on a Monday night, both inside in the main dining room and outside in their cozy beer garden. The interior decor transported us to Europe. And the food delighted our eyes and palates. Before the starters come, Chef surprised us with savory and delicious cheese biscuits. So good! If these were on the menu, I'd order a plate of them for myself! To start we shared: -ROASTED BEET SALAD goat cheese, orange, candied walnuts, yogurt, pickled shallots, balsamic pearls *vibrant in color and flavor -BURRATA & PEACH SPECIAL *burrata is always a good idea, especially with fresh summer peaches For mains we had: BAVARIAN SCHNITZEL braised red cabbage, sauerkraut, potato dumpling *he licked his plate clean! What a wonderful way to end our visit to Healdsburg!! Victor, our server, was so attentive and kind and knowledgeable which was the only thing even better than the delicious food! We had the potato latkes and smoked salmon per his recommendation. Crispy, flavorful, and the salmon was topped with fresh dill, sour cream, mustard, and other tasty toppings. The sausage trio (or spoiler alert: cuatro!) came with two kinds of sauerkraut and four different sauces. The house mustard was fantastic as was the curry ketchup and the sweet mustard. Finally, a lovely apple strudel to cap the evening. Who doesn't love rum raisin ice cream and where is it in my life? Thank you for a cozy, kind, and delicious evening. Something other than Italian food in Healdsburg??? On our last visit to Healdsburg, my sister-in-law booked this restaurant. I wasn't expecting a German cuisine restaurant... I honestly thought we were going to a Greek restaurant, based on the sound of the name. The restaurant is very cozy and the service staff were friendly. We ordered a couple pretzels to start and they were really good, like those you would get in Germany. I decided to go for the Classic Weinerschnitzel and shared an Iceberg Wedge with my mother-in-law. The salad was very good and served with ranch, as opposed to Bleu Cheese, which I appreciated. The schnitzel was made with veal and it was probably the best schnitzel I've ordered outside of Germany. It came with parsley buttered potatoes and a dill cucumber salad, along with a lingonberry jam. To finish off the meal I ordered the Apple Strudel, which was fantastic! We met family for dinner here and everything from the well lit dining area to the excellent service-attentive but not hovering- to the delicious meal with adult beverages and finally the fantastic dessert-everything was perfect. Coming up for it with a rating for this restaurant was a bit of a challenge. So this is a bit of a mixed review for the food and the service. To be fair, the restaurant was fairly busy. We were seated rather quickly, but there was a slight lag in initial service. We brought a bottle of wine with us, and the server asked if we'd like it opened. Since she was under age that she had to search for someone who could open the bottle for us in about 20 minutes later, she returned the table and apologized and said someone will be coming soon. At that time we also decided to order a bottle of wine from the wine list to Enjoy as well. After further delay, A different person brought us two glasses of wine, and I said, actually we asked for a bottle, which leader arrived. Now the food. We started with appetizers, including the grilled octopus -- quite tasty -- As well as equally tasty scallops, which were one of the specials for the night. For the main course, we ordered Wiener schnitzel, Jager schnitzel and calf liver. All were cooked nicely and tasted very good although the calf liver entrée was a little off of hot. Portion sizes were generous. The ladies shared a hazelnut chocolate tort to put a bow on the meal. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. I was a bit surprised upon reviewing the bill that $30 corkage was applied to the bottle of wine we brought. First of all corkage was not listed anywhere. (It should be noted their website doesn't even have a wine list at all). Secondly, most restaurants tend to waive corkage if you purchase a bottle at the restaurant as we did. I double checked to make sure that we weren't accidentally charged $15 twice for two bottles but no it's actually $30 a bottle for corkage. So that was a little disappointing. Another disappointment was the appearance of a 3% "Kitchen Fair Living Wage" surcharge. I failed to see the point of having a separate listing for this. Why not just add an extra buck or so to the entrée prices. Despite these shortcomings will probably be back for more of that tasty food. We probably won't be bringing any wine, however. read more

Last night I had such a wonderful experience at Tisza Bistro. The moment I walked in, the smell from the kitchen instantly transported me back to a German restaurant I once visited--and I loved that nostalgic feeling. The ambiance was cute and cozy, perfect for a relaxed evening, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. I especially enjoyed that our table was right in front of the chef's kitchen. There was something special about watching dishes come out and hearing the chef personally say "enjoy" as plates were served. We started with the pretzel and beer salad--both were amazing. The fresh, warm pretzel paired with a cold beer was such a satisfying start. For my entrée, I ordered the duck confit, which was absolutely delicious and the perfect dish to welcome in the fall season. To pair with it, I had a glass of Austrian Grüner Veltliner, which was crisp, balanced, and lovely alongside the meal. What a great accidental find! And we found it when we stopped by the Windsor Farmers Market. Saw a little both with breakfast sandwiches. It was absolutely delicious! So when they told us they had a restaurant in Healdsburg, we had to go there. This little Euro hole-in-the-wall on the south end of downtown Healdsburg was amazing with indoor and a little patio in the back. We had their delicious homemade German sausages and amazing roasted brussel sprouts (best ever), equally amazing octopus cooked perfectly (maybe best ever), Apple Streusel (best ever... maybe because the phylo dough crust?), and with the sausages came two delicous homemade mustards and some catsup. I thought, why catsup?... but that was the definitely the best catsup/ketchup we've ever had! I asked the waitress, Alena, "why?" and she said it had 9 secret spices but it's not overly spiced up. So upon my request she got us a small container of it to bring home. Alena was very warm and helpful with our ordering. She was right on with all her suggestions. I give her 5 stars too. And BTW that breakfast sandwich might have been the best ever too! read more

Tisza has made the move from Windsor to Healdsburg and created what is now my favorite German/European restaurant in the area. The food stratles upscale classic German dishes with touches of classic California wine country farm to table. The two blend together perfectly. If you choose to go with their classic menu items I highly suggest either their JÄGERSCHNITZEL or BAVARIAN SCHNITZEL. They are the closest thing in the Bay Area that I've found to authenticate German schnitzel. One of the cool things that I've loved seeing is each week they offer a 3 course tasting menus on Sunday. It's a fun way to try new things and not break the bank. $45 for 3 courses is a pretty great deal. The food is fresh, good size portions, and fabulous flavors. The restaurant also offers free corkage on Mondays. Another fabulous aspect of this place. Just a few days ago they also opened their "Beer Garden" for those who choose to take in the fresh outdoor air under a marvelous tree. We haven't dined inside yet but when we do go inside we've noticed it's quite loud. The beer garden area is definitely a more relaxed and pleasant dining experience for us. The service has been great each visit. Attentive, but not overbearing, and quite pleasant staff. We will definitely be returning soon. We are excited to see what's cooking next at Tisza! read more

Tisza has become a favorite of ours since their reincarnation in Healdsburg. The chef and food here is precise and delicious. By precise I mean the consistency of the food, from appetizers to desserts is pretty amazing. The menu is large, concentrating on German-Eastern European dishes but there is something for everyone. Our latest visit in early November was typical of the high quality. We started by sharing the Fried Brussels Sprouts, with Balsamic Reduction, Roasted Garlic, Gruyere Cheese, Espelette. A very large yummy portion, enough to share. I had the Jagerschnitzel, Heritage Duroc Pork, Wild Mushroom & Porcini Sauce, Buttered Spätzle. Delicious. DW had her favorite Sauerbraten, with Braised Short Rib, Mashed Potato, Sauteed Vegetables, Fried Onion. A big yum and both entrees are pure comfort food! Too full for dessert but maybe next time. Service here is another strength. Always friendly helpful service. Another plus is you can eat in their attractive dining room, their outside patio or the Beer Garden. Finally, Mondays are "free corkage" so you can bring that special bottle and enjoy with the great food.
