I can't with The Matheson, but in the best possible way. I've eaten here and gave that meal 5 stars, so I already knew the dining room is excellent. But now I'm giving their happy hour 5 stars. We sat downstairs at their beautiful bar. Great service, a fantastic $15 medium rare (my personal favorite) burger with grilled onions, cheese, and a smoky umami flavor, regular order sized, and a separate generous little gem salad with Danish blue cheese ($13) plus fries ($6). It's a concise menu, but the burger is good and each offering is full sized and high quality. There is either a $9 Negroni or margarita or what appealed to us: the sci-fi, tech-looking Wine Wall, with 88 open bottles from around the world. Forget traditional wine tasting, this is around the world wine tasting. Choose from 88 wines, grab their wine "credit card," and sample multiple pours side by side. What a fun and mordern atmostsphere. We reservation but arrived a few minutes early, so our hostrst suggested to check out the bar or the self pour wine tasting. Fun concept wherr you can choose what you want to tatse , by a splash , half or full glass. We sat outside it was a beautiful evening. Friendly wait staff and food served promplty. Top 5 best meals of my life. Ambiance and food were such a delight. Very casual atmosphere, didn't seem underdressed with sandals and a polo. Was able to score a seat at the chefs counter for the 5 course "chef's pick". The portions were generous, the flavors were balanced, bright and rich. Loved the presentation and the service. Not only was the food a hit but our server, our somm and the food runners were fun to chat with. We also had great conversations with the other patrons we sat with at the counter! It was absolutely not what I expected so I wish I had been warned. It said ceviche on the menu but I don't recall it saying it was Peruvian style with corn nuts and a creamy sauce. Another great restaurant discovered! We arrived in Healdsburg this afternoon and didn't know what to do for dinner, our hotel suggested this restaurant, and we could not have been more pleased. They have a great wine selection and lots of variety on their menu. We arrived early for our reservation and decided to switch our table to a seat around the open kitchen. The interiors are very lively with colorful art on the walls and a large wine room. I started with the Baby Lettuce and Grapefruit Salad. I am not a fan of Goat Cheese, so I asked to leave that part off. Even without it, it was beyond delicious! My husband started with the Little Gem Wedge Salad, he then moved onto the Rack of Lamb while I moved onto the Burger. We paired this with a fabulous Knightsbridge Cabernet. My Wife's burger was way too dense, nothing on the Chef's Tasting really stood out much, and my almost $50 entree was described as a Lamb RACK...I got three little chops. ​Came here for a family birthday dinner to celebrate both my mom's and my birthday, and it was a fantastic experience. We asked if the dishes could be served family-style, and everything was incredibly solid. ​We tried the grilled octopus, the salad with grapefruit, the crab pasta, the rack of lamb, the foie gras, and the mushroom tempura. Honestly, every single dish stood out. The mushroom tempura was a massive highlight, the batter itself was beautifully seasoned, which really brought out the natural earthiness and deep umami of the mushroom. Paired with its perfect dipping sauce, it was so good that I'd honestly be happy just getting two orders of it with some garlic or fried rice and calling it a perfect meal. ​My other favorite was the rack of lamb, we asked for medium rare, and it was cooked to absolute perfection. The crab pasta was also great; you could really taste that deep umami flavor from the kombu. ​The only minor critique is the bread-to-foie gras ratio. It felt a bit off for sharing, and we had to ask for extra toast. It would be great if they adjusted the amount of bread based on the party size, especially when sharing family-style. ​We finished with the olive oil cake and the cheesecake for dessert, and both were excellent, perfectly balanced and not too sweet. To top it all off, the staff gave us a birthday card, which was such a thoughtful, personalized touch. Oh wow... i love this spot! I was in town for a couple days...daughter visiting with friends in Sonoma...she left me within 20 min of checking into hotel. I wanted to go out for a Happy Hour and looked into my list of places I want to try on here (based on recommendations for local friends). this looked perfect and i've never really experienced Healdsburg... The bar was packed and they do allow standing room but that's not what i wanted. Standing is fine and dandy if I was in a group but i was alone.... She offered either a table or at the counter overlooking the kitchen..I opted for counter. I had a perfect view of all the food being prepped. I was tempted to do the "founders" menu which is 3 courses for $50 ...option to add wine pairing for $30. BUT...i wasn't that hungry. I opted for the HH menu...i picked the Pepperoni flatbread + Baby lettuce & grapefruit salad. Happy Hour Rose wine... That salad was so damn good! the "croutons' were a goat cheese meringue. wow! dressing was perfectly done. the pizza was also amazing!! i had half of each to take back to hotel. they do have a wall of wine (by the ounce pours)...as impressive as it was ...i wasn't interested in walking over there to pour and sample. super fun atmosphere... phenomenal service spectacular food. 100% want to come back again! read more

My wife and I have eaten at The Matheson and Valette a number of times and we have always enjoyed chef Dustin's food and their overall hospitality and vibe. On Sunday we attended a special Crab & Seafood Boil afternoon event on the roof and it was terrific as always. We started with a number of passed small nibbles (included among the servers were the chefs two young daughters!) and the winners were the crab salad and the smoked salmon with caviar. They poured one of the Valette white wines and it was bright and crisp and a perfect accompaniment. The highlights of the lunch menu included a lovely perfectly dressed Cesar salad w white anchovies, a shrimp boil with corn and potatoes, a high quality smoked meat charcuterie board from nearby journeyman butcher shop and some lovely roasted garlic bread and the reason for the whole event was the local Dungeness crab roasted with a dusting of old bay. The crab was da bomb and I could have easily tried to stuff even more in my mouth if they kept the crabs coming ! The meal ended with various chocolates and cookies and we were stuffed, highly satisfied and glad we attended this special event ! I've been going with my husband since the opening of Roof106 and The Matheson and have given consistent feedback that the prix fixe menu (requires 2 person minimum-unfortunate for a date night) and ad hoc menu options are discriminatory to vegetarians/vegans since I like more than a salad or broccoli pizza. Cesar salad can't be made vegan. It's also not fair to my dining guests that want to do the Prix Fixe menu that they can't because of my dietary restrictions. Was surprised to be seated immediately at a counter overlooking the kitchen. Love watching the food come out. Was give 46 different menus for all the different things. Ok it was like 6, but still, thats a lot! Had a few different servers help me, which was nice but also a little confusing on who my actual server was. Yvette ended up being the one to help for the rest of the meal and she was awesome! I ordered the 6 Oz filet. Beautiful presentation. Perfect cook, but was unevenly seasoned and (for me) needed the accompanying sauces. The bed of mushrooms and shishito peppers were a nice addition. Chimichurri and XO was super good. 12/10 good. The bernaise sauce, for me was meh. For dessert, I ordered the Matheson Float. I ordered mine with the rum shot, strictly for research purposes, and it was the perfect way to end the meal. Very disappointed in my experience today. We have been here before for dinner and had a great time. I thought the brunch would be similar. Here are some highlights: -We had to ask for water and took 3 people to ask us what type before it was brought over -The server did not know the menu well and forgot our a drink order and had to come back to ask for us to point to it -Eggs Benedict was way over cooked. I had a reservation since it was Valentines Day. I was sat at what they call the "Chef's table" though it is just the bar around the open kitchen. Still nice though. My waiter was very attentive and friendly. First course, I opted for the caviar upgrade. Pillowy soft belinis with creme fraiche, unagi and a jar of caviar. Might be my favorite location of the weekend, just because how good their cocktails were. We went to sooooo many places this weekend and none really did it for me. I was extremely hesitant on ordering so I decided to allow my friend to order the Going Bananas first. That was such a great cocktail, I ended up deciding on the London Fog fizz, and the bartender made great drinks. It was the first drink I genuinely enjoyed this weekend. She also advised us they would be closing but we could go upstairs to the roof top and that it had a different vibe. We finished our drink and went upstairs, I have to point out the 3 bartenders were all red headed looked related. I got the clarified margarita and idk it just threw me off. It's their top seller because it gets people drunk but not necessarily because it tastes good. I am not a fan of on tap cocktails. The bartender was cool, he chatted a bit which was nice because not a ton are sociable anymore. Also we wanted to come to the rooftop the night prior for my gfs birthday but our friend who is from the area said we would not get it in so we didn't even try and ended up elsewhere. Total surprise date night gem--we had no idea The Matheson was a Michelin-starred spot when we walked in. We just grabbed two seats at the bar in the middle of the Healdsburg square and had one of the best nights out. My partner ordered the Modern Margarita (el tequileño + tapatio blanco, clarified lime), and wow--we were both blown away. It was crystal clear and somehow incredibly smooth. We'd never had a clarified cocktail before, and it totally set the tone. I stuck with a dirty gin martini and then a Manhattan, and both were next-level good. That martini was super dirty but still perfectly clear--mind blown. Easily one of the best I've ever had. Food-wise, we started with the maitake mushrooms--tempura style with house kewpie and spicy sesame. They came out looking way more dramatic than expected (in the best way) and totally delivered on flavor. We had also ordered the Matheson Burger (wagyu, raclette, caramelized onions on the side) and split it. Perfectly cooked, super juicy, and rich without being over the top. We came in thinking it was just a casual dinner spot and ended up having a Michelin-level experience--without even realizing it. 10/10 would go again for a special night out or even just a really good drink at the bar. read more

Our server (didn't catch her name) really made the experience and the owner even overheard us talking about a birthday as he was walking by and stopped to chat with us about it. 5 stars for service/hospitality but for me, the food was lacking. Everything was very over salted (not seasoned, salted) I felt like I had to down half a glass of water with every bite. Two people in my party shared the tomahawk (I believe it's listed as like 35-40oz) and we were made to believe it would feed them and THEN some, but they finished it still hungry as a majority of it was just inedible fatty pieces. Visiting from NYC for the week, our hotel recommended this restaurant. Sadly, the bar staff was a real disappointment. While waiting for a table last Saturday around 5 PM, to our surprise, it was Happy Hour. Someone should have told the two ladies serving the drinks! They were not only not happy to be there, no smiles, no greetings, but made the experience transactional instead of welcoming! Neither checked in after our glasses remained empty for 15 minutes. And when I asked for a sugar rim on my sidecar cocktail, I was told "Oh we don't do that for the happy hour drinks." Really? All in all, a very disappointing start to an evening. We decided to have dinner elsewhere as our initial encounter put a bad taste our mouths...Not only were we made to feel insignificant, but truly like we were a bother, not a guest. The Matheson is such a great place for fine dining. We have the chef selection and really enjoyed the Dungeness crab linguine, which was so unique. The bone marrow and toast was a very surprising dish that tasted so good and yet so simple. The tuna tartare was as good as a sushi spot. Overall, there are no bad dishes - here everything is delicious. This venue is definitely upscale with a young and chic crowd, as well as a more seasoned professionals visiting the area. We spent my husband's birthday weekend in Healdsburg and came here for one of his celebration dinners. It was really bustling -- the energy was high and the music was great. We sat at the Chef's counter and the staff had a signed birthday card set at hubby's seat, which was a nice touch.
