Traveling with a child who has severe food allergies can make something as simple as finding a safe meal extremely stressful. We had booked a room at Appellation specifically because it had a kitchenette so I could cook for my daughter. Unfortunately, when we were ready to cook, the burners were not working, and I wasn't sure what we were going to do for dinner. When I went to the front desk to ask if there were any options, Chef Reed Palmer came out personally and immediately showed so much kindness and compassion. He genuinely wanted to help and offered to do whatever he could to make sure my daughter could have a safe meal. What happened next was something I will never forget. Chef Palmer invited Lily to visit the vegetable garden, where she was able to pick fresh vegetables herself. He then welcomed us into the private demonstration kitchen and prepared a safe meal for her using the ingredients we brought. He was incredibly patient, thoughtful, and understanding throughout the entire experience. The team even set a beautiful table for the two of us so we could enjoy a meal together outside of our hotel room. My daughter is 14, and because of her allergies, I can count on one hand the number of times we have been able to eat a meal at a restaurant. This experience felt truly magical. It meant so much to both of us to be able to share a special meal together in such a warm and welcoming environment. Chef Palmer's generosity, flexibility, and genuine care went far beyond what we could have ever expected. It was an incredible treat to have a meal prepared for us by such a high-caliber chef, and the kindness he showed our family will stay with us for a very long time. This restaurant, attached to the new Appellation hotel is outstanding. They serve a 3-coursed meal and start you off with a lovely complimentary pour of their champagne, provided by their. The service is outstanding and the staff is knowledgeable and very helpful with decision fatigue. It was a lovely evening and there are plenty of spacious seats for small or large parties. Every course was delicious from collared greens, waffle fries, perfectly cooked fish, and pasta starter. I absolutely cannot wait to go back here, even if I'm not staying at the hotel. read more

So this review is specifically for the Valentine's Day course ($180) per person. First off, insane price for dinner. But the establishment was beautiful, the multiple servers that came by were awesome, so if the food matched, it would have be a little more reasonable. The only dish worth mentioning is the pasta with seafood sausage. Super unique, delicious and wish we had more of that. Everything else was not what you'd expect for such a high price tag. The steak was good, scallops were good, but nothing over the top. Also, the oysters were awful. Drowned in hollandaise, full of seawater, not my favorite. Review for Folio at Appellation Healdsburg After a long day of travel, we checked into Appellation Healdsburg, excited for a relaxing evening on Sunday around 5pm. We were informed that Folio, the restaurant on-site, prided itself on a farm-to-fork philosophy and offered an inviting dining experience. Though we initially planned to dine downtown, after our long day with travel, we opted to try Folio that evening after getting settled in our room. Upon arrival, we noticed the restaurant wasn't busy at all (many apparent open tables and seating) yet we were asked if we had a reservation, which felt unnecessary. We were told the only options were barstool seating, so the two of us settled at the long and empty (but gorgeous) community hi-top table on barstools with no fuss, just happy to be there. Our server, was excellent, attentive, and friendly. Unfortunately, none of the food that evening matched the service. We started with the crab appetizer, which was underwhelming in both presentation and taste. It came out lukewarm with a mountain of hollandaise sauce overpowering a dish that was plated on odd glassware straight from an old diner with a few homemade round crackers and maybe 4 small leaves of lettuce. It felt cheap, unintelligent, rushed, not well thought-out, and just did not match the space we were dining. We then tried the pasta dishes. The first was pasta with clams, but the clams were sparse, and the dish was dominated by garlic and a mysterious meat that didn't quite fit. The squash pasta was more of the same letdown, very al dente with very little flavor. I don't think we ate half of it. The main course, the blackened cod, was shared by my wife and I. It again was a nightmare presentation, brought to the table in a large sterling silver platter, sloppily positioned between my wife and I, saturated in peanut sauce on a bed of rice. It again lacked the finesse any diner would expect in this setting. In short, the experience didn't live up to the hype, especially considering the resort's desire to become an elevated culinary destination. At $85/person prefix, we expected more. The service was a relative bright spot, but the food left us hoping for more. It was so bad we avoided all meals at the restaurant for the next two days altogether. Thankfully, downtown Healdsburg had other fantastic dining options that rescued our palate during this trip. Folio must revisit the diner experience and reconsider what kind of reputation they wish to have if they want to be around for any amount of time. The food industry has expectations in this part of the world and they failed at most of them. read more

My only complaint about this restaurant is that they don't communicate on their website that they only offer limited dinner menus depending on the day of the week. Tonight we sat outside on the patio, and the ambience was absolutely beautiful. Honestly, I think we could hear each other better outside than we would have indoors. Both the interior and exterior spaces are stunning -- warm lighting, thoughtful decor, and an overall atmosphere that feels elegant but relaxed. We learned that the property has over 20 olive trees, each between 125 and 150 years old, scattered throughout the grounds, which really adds to the charm. Service was excellent. The sommelier stopped by, as did several staff members throughout the evening, but it never felt repetitive or impersonal. Everyone was attentive and in sync, which I really appreciated. They offer a pre-fixe menu with a choice of first and second courses, followed by a dessert course from a separate menu. You can also add à la carte appetizers or nightly specials. For my first course, I had the Manila clam pasta -- a well-balanced dish with an interesting sauce that was both buttery and slightly tart, featuring bits of bacon. Delicious and unique. The complimentary bread basket was another highlight -- a mix of assorted breads served with soft butter sprinkled with sea salt flakes. For our appetizer, we shared the savory bread pudding, which was excellent -- tender, flavorful, and topped with finely shaved cheese. For my main course, I chose the cioppino. It was good -- the seafood was cooked properly, and the fennel added a nice touch -- but it lacked depth of flavor and portion size compared to other dishes at the table. The duck, on the other hand, was outstanding: rich, tender, and perfectly cooked. The steak also looked incredible, so I'd recommend either of those as a main. For dessert, our table of five ordered all five options to share. The standout for me was the pistachio cheesecake -- creamy, balanced, and beautifully presented. I paired it with a decaf Americano that was smooth and satisfying. After dinner, we went upstairs to the bar, which was lively and had an equally beautiful atmosphere. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, and while we didn't stay for drinks, I'd love to return to enjoy cocktails there next time. Valet parking is available for just $11 -- very reasonable, especially since there's also street parking nearby. You can text the valet when you're ready to leave, and they'll have your car waiting. Overall, the experience was fantastic from start to finish. Great ambience, attentive service, and a fair price point for a three-course dinner. Haven't tried the bar for dinner but based on my initial assessment I think the bar is going to be the better deal and where I will likely dine again in the future. In hindsight, it did look a little pink, but I figured a high-end establishment knows what it is doing. So, even though the ambiance was nice and the service was great, I can't come back here. One other weird thing: Two other people in our party ordered the chicken, which seems like a fairly vanilla dish. But they served it with the chicken feet deep fried on the side of the dish. Chicken feet don't necessarily bother me, but the sight of it really grossed out a few other people in our party. Stunning venue. The setting is nothing short of a work of art. As the staff mentioned, from the moment you walk in, you're enveloped into the restaurant, rather than down some dark corridor with bathrooms on the side and leading to a maitre'd table....blah-blah. Nope, you can't help but be blown away by the spectacle that is Folia. I am reluctant to really say anything negative or discouraging about the food. I would have loved to have been bowled over, but I was not, and neither was my celebrity friend, who, knows cuisine. I absolutely loved loved-loved the bread bowl. I wish I could have loved the cioppino. I wish I could have loved the $200 steak. I wish I could have loved the greens. First thing I'd like to say is that the food is actually really good. The ambience and environment is lovely and we have enjoyed coming here three or four times in the last few months. The issue is the poor service. The staff are awesome and kind, but there are just not enough of them. So they are stretched too thin... A few times, we had to get up from the table to go get a glass of water refilled or another drink. We were unable to get a waiters attention. We have been sat at the table for 10 minutes before getting a drink order then 10 more minutes to get the drink. Two times, we had to ask for silverware after the food arrived. And then, they brought the silverware, but they didn't bring any napkins. So, again, we do like the food, but the poor service doesn't make Folia one of our staple restaurant choices. read more

The worst. We waited to go until they'd been open a little while as we've made the mistake of going to new restaurants before they worked the kinks, but maybe we didn't wait long enough? Let's give it a couple years. First off - yes, our timing was odd, but coming back from a funeral, we wanted a place we could have a drink and a few snacks, and Folia was open. We got there about 3pm and were seated at the bar. Asked about the first cocktail on the menu and the bartender totally floundered, then admitted he was the barback and did we want to wait for the bartender? Fair enough, we appreciated the honesty, ordered the bread basket, olives and stuffed peppers. All fine. No complaints on the food. Bartender comes back and after a long enough period for him to settle in and appear to be making drinks for another party we ask again about the first cocktail on the menu and get a vague non informational response on it. Decide to abandon hopes of a custom cocktail and order two dry martinis with olives. We have had martinis at every restaurant in Healdsburg and can tell you that this ranks the smallest martini in town. Bartender says, hey I'm going into a meeting, you okay? and we say yes and eat our food and drink our drink and wait until the end of time and finally calculate what we owe and put enough cash plus a tip on the counter and leave. Bartender chases out after us and asks if we want to pay and we say yes, pile of cash left for you and we left wishing we'd left a smaller tip. Beautiful place inside and out, too bad we'll never go back ever again. read more

Had the Valentine's Dinner tasting menu and it was a disappointment. No amuse bouche which is quite common at nicer tasting menus. The food completely lacked imagination and for a few courses lacked flavor. One course was over salted. The crab "ball" was served over some type of tasteless black tar like sauce. The filet mignon course was great. But the dessert was absolutely thoughtless and lacked in flavor. A piece of chocolate cake from Safeway would have been better. The wine list was extensive and they had a sommelier on site which was cool- would have appreciated some more lower price point options. We did the $85 pre-fixed meal- got the clam pasta, butter lettuce salad, duck & steak as well as desert. It was all ok, lacked seasoning and not amazing and definitely not reflective of the high prices. Service members were kind but didn't speak to the menu or explain much of the dishes. Also separately we weren't huge fans of the "choose your own silverware" drawer. I like the idea but it just felt sort of funny and forced. My partner has been in the restaurant business for many years and he saw many gaps in this restaurant's offerings. Of course we want to support local, but we left feeling pretty dissatisfied. With that said, prior to dinner, we had a couple apps and cocktails upstairs at beeline and it was wonderful! My first time at Folia. This place is an architecural jewel, extreme attention to detail, a new standard for wine country chic. The staff is well trained, attentive but not overpowering. Now for the food. After my wife's mocktail was delivered she was informed that the drink contained alcohol and needed to be exchanged. My beer came in a glass with salted rim, not what I expected. My first course consisted of Manilla clam pasta. It was heavy on the pancetta and light on the clams. The dish was swimming in fat. I had trout for the main course, the fish was cooked to perfection. It consisted of a piece of fish and a few strands of puntarelle, nothing else. Unfortunately, the heavy buttery sauce masked trout's delicate natural flavor. I am a strict vegan and they make me feel like pulling off a great vegan meal is easy. I know it is not. The Chef, Reed, is awesome. A great guy and an incredible chef. So for me, the food quality is A++; the service is another A++; the setting and decor, A++. If you want a great meal in Healdsburg go to Folia. My wife and I went to Folia Bar & Kitchen for lunch on Christmas day and had a lovely time. We were greeted warmly by Layla who led us to a roomy and very comfortable booth. She brought us complimentary tastes of champagne (which was yummy) and then we ordered our lunch. My wife started with the Beet & Mandarin salad. It was beautiful, delicate and delicious. The same could be said for my Baby Iceberg salad. Loved it so much I asked Adam (who I didn't know at the time, but found out later, he is the Director of Food & Beverage) for the recipe for the buttermilk dressing. He responded he'd see what he could do. Then our main courses came. Leslie had the Mt Lassen Trout. I had the cheeseburger. Again, both were exceptional. Delicately & perfectly seasoned. Just sublime, each dish, but also so simple at the same time. While we were eating Adam returned to our table and presented me with a nice stiff envelope; inside, a printed recipe for the buttermilk dressing. I was very grateful as it's a recipe I will certainly use in the future. We had a lovely talk with Adam and told him how much we enjoyed our meal. For dessert we shared a Sticky Toffee Pudding. Again, so good. The restaurant itself is stunning. Lots of room so you don't feel packed in like sardines, glass everywhere bringing the outside in, very comfortable seating and furniture. Overall very good. We had the $85 price fix menu. We selected the chicory salad, the clam fusilli pasta, the cioppino, steak (flat iron?), dark chocolate dessert, and pistachio cheesecake. The salad was very nice although slightly overdressed for my taste. We had bar seats so I watched the chef make the salad and loved the attention to detail. He shaved the cheese in between layers of lettuce. The salad and dressing had great flavor and crisp. The pear was perfectly ripe and sweet. The pasta may have been the standout. The house made pasta with as perfectly chewy and al dente. The brown butter? was likewise perfectly executed. That was delicious. The steak was the perfect temperature throughout and the flavor was great. The cioppino was a little lacking. The flavor was just ok. My wife thought it was overwhelming fennel and there was no black cod in sight (it might have actually been an oversight/missing). The desserts were both also very good but the cheesecake was the winner. Great flavor (subtle) and combo with raspberry and whip cream. Overall, very good. read more

We had SUCH a wonderful first dining experience at Folia this past weekend! Staff were all professional, attentive and friendly. We were warmly greeted at the main door and it was truly fabulous the entire evening! Great menu and the food was superb for all our courses and selections. Beautiful presentation too! We were seated outside and the heaters were great. Fabulous ambiance both inside and outside. Both options are wonderful. Our server Christina could not have been better in any way. She made the evening perfect in every way. We would definitely ask for her again another trip up to Sonoma. It's a relatively new restaurant but already a "have to dine at" for us when we are up in Healdsburg again in the new year. It's really that good! We were so happy with every part of the dinner. We were excited to try this new restaurant. We arrived early to have a drink up in the bar. We wanted to let the host know we were there, but there was no one at the host stand and there was a line of several people waiting for someone. We took the elevator to the top, and no signage to show you where the bar was. We found it and had great drinks with an amazing view. The 'perfect' martini was delicious! Our server Saige was super friendly and was great. Down in the restaurant we sat outside with a great view. We looked at the menus and so many items that were on the restaurant's website were not there. We asked and were told that they only serve the 'lounge' menu Mondays and Tuesdays! Nowhere on the site or on the app did it say that. It would have been a good thing to know, as we would have chosen another night to come. I would recommend that someone in charge do something to publicize that only a few limited items are available those nights. I ended up having the burger, very simple but tasty. My wife had the chicken that comes with the foot, which is sort of strange. It was pretty flavorful but again very simple. One of us had the pasta and he liked it. My overall impression is that for a high-end restaurant, I would have expected more options and better dishes. I may try it again but never on a Monday or Tuesday! read more

Charlie Palmer does amazing work at all of his places. However this one needs to get some kinks out. Food was good, wine list good. We had the pre fixe $85 for three course option. The Creste de gallo Pomodoro appeteizer was incredible. We upgraded to the 28 oz bone-in New York strip for two and it was a bit chewy and gamey - only had half of it - was never asked how it was or why we did not finish it. However the real fail was the super snobby attitude of the hostesses. It was actually shocking - and that will be the reason we most likely won't return for a while. Service was just ok - never asked if we wanted more to drink, never cleaned the table or cleared the dishes. The ambiance and decor is great, the lighting fantastic, the noise level just perfect. Valet is $11 (Montage across the street is free valet). Beware you have assigned seating - no matter where you are even at the bar, out on the many outdoor seats and not allowed to move even an inch - even with plenty of open vacant seats. Was told our party of 2 could only sit at the counter since they do not have tables for 2 however by the end of our meal most of the 4 tops only had 2 people at it. It is too bad since Charlie is a great guy but the front of the house staff has an elitist snobby attitude. read more
