Went here on our first night for dinner with the kids after we checked in to Vinarosa resort. It was a relief not to have to drive out again and have access to a good restaurant around the property. We were a bit early to our 7:30 pm reservation at the terrace. Originally seated in a cramped table more suited for 2, but our waitress, Jennifer, accommodated us to have a larger table near the table. The terrace was a perfect place to host kids. We did not feel too much pressure as it was more casual without being cold. And thoroughly enjoyed the view of the vineyard and the many dogs that were roaming around the property we brought our's too!). Now to the food - we ordered the mussels and fries, steak w frites, and the halibut. The kids ordered two pastas from the kids' menu with shirley temples. My elder had two bowls of their butter pasta (hold the greens/parsley, please). Their carbs were all delicious - pasta ordered twice as mentioned, and fries, we had to order another bowl. Just had an incredible brunch. The farm-to-table dishes were absolutely delicious, and the vineyard views just added to the calming and welcoming mood. The peaceful pathways and charming fountains also added to the gorgeous setting where time seems to slow down . The thoughtfully crafted menu offers Sonoma's freshest ingredients. I recommend the Sonoma French Toast: a homemade brioche, estate berries, orange-vanilla sauce, whipped mascarpone. Huge thanks to Yakeline and the entire team for their warm hospitality. I've eaten here before and have been quite satisfied but my meal last night was served lukewarm, bland and strangely the lamb shank was blackish green but was not described as blackened. Unfortunately two of us ordered this meal and were disappointed. Brussels sprouts starter was good. TIME TO FIND a new favorite restaurant. What happened? This was my favorite restaurant for over 10 years. Mediocre for last three visits so gave it one more try on 8/8/26. Double the price, half the portions, and half the flavor. We ordered chicken, salmon, calimari, steaks, desserts. We won't be back. They used to give an assortment of breads while you waited, truffles at the end. All special touches are gone. I will add that the server seemed stressed and in a rush. Save your $600 for dinner and try another venue. read more

How have I never reviewed John Ash?! I've been coming to John Ash for years and it never loses its shine. The vibe here is true Sonoma wine country, there's vineyard views, there's soft romantic lighting, there's sophistication without it feeling pretentious or over done. Fancy and business casual all at once. I've celebrated countless dates, birthdays, anniversaries and random Tuesdays here because even when the restaurant is full, it feels intimate. Their menu changes with the seasons, but some things stay consistent. Also, the wine list is curated so well it would impress even the most picky sommelier. Again, very wine county forward. Service is mostly great (friendly, knowledgeable staff who know their wines) though occasionally a little slow on busy nights. 1000/10. If you live in Sonoma County and haven't been here at least once, go. It's worth the splurge and If you time it right at golden hour, it's honestly one of the most beautiful dinner spots in the county. read more

Came here for Happy Hour Sunday Advice: either charge more (than $22) for the burger fries and beer, that was excellent or charge less for the two ($22) fish tacos, which were a HUGE disappointment!! Rock Cod sounds good, eh? There were slivers so small my fork couldn't pick them up. The tacos didn't come close to be "substantial"...2 med. sized filled with fresh cabbage, little else. Please don't continue this dish if you can't afford to place more than 1 oz.of fish in a taco. It's too embarrassing to say something to your waitperson in front of your friends. read more

One of the most amazing restaurants I've been to in a long time. I first went for breakfast and had the macro bowl, and wow. It was fresh, vibrant, and absolutely delicious. All the colors and flavors together felt so nourishing I joked it was aligning my chakras. You can truly taste the quality of the ingredients. I loved it so much that I brought my husband back for dinner that evening, and it ended up being one of the most delightful meals we've ever had together. I'm a big fan of a thoughtfully curated, farm-to-table menu, and this place does it beautifully. We started with the focaccia, which was hands down some of the best bread I've ever had. It came with an eggplant spread that had subtle Indian-inspired flavors and was absolutely marvelous. I had the baby greens salad, and the vegetables tasted like they had just been picked from the garden moments before. My husband ordered the butternut squash soup, and after one bite I understood why he loved it. For my main course, I had the salmon, which had the most delicate hint of clove. I was obsessed. My husband had the steak frites, cooked perfectly and melt-in-your-mouth tender. I kept stealing bites. We finished with tiramisu and bread pudding, both completely delightful, along with light, crisp glasses of Chardonnay. The next morning, I went back again for breakfast because I simply couldn't resist. I had the macro bowl again and ordered the Vinarosa burger to go for the drive home. Both were marvelous. But, the steak frite was seriously disappointing - medium rare was half dry and some pink. No juiciness. Really no flavor. For such a highly hyped eatery, the food was on the disappointing side in this very elegant inside dining room of the resort, with the fireplace going, quite cozy. Entree choices the usual mundane. No soup on offer which would have comforted on a cool night. Too heavy on seafood appetizer listing for those not able to partake. Expectation was for more innovative choices. My husband brought me to this nice, enchanted fancy restaurant for my birthday. Reservations were placed online, upon arrival we were greeted and our tables ready within a 3-5min wait. They have a full bar to your right as soon as you walk in. Plenty of space to enjoy a nice cocktail, or if you're in the mood for a 1on1 more personable setting like we were that evening- we choose the outside patio which had heat warmers to keep us warm and toasty, all the while overlooking an endless bound of Sonoma's County finest winery. Our food was great- oyster appetizers along with the mandatory bread n butter. For the main entrée we helped ourselves to a perfectly cooked filet mignon, partnered with a glass of red wine, season mash n veggies. So disappointed. We went to the Front Room on Father's Day...for a burger and pizza . They both were incorrect. The burger had no greens or grilled onions...basically bare...and they admitted the pizza had been incorrect, so waited awhile...during which we ordered more champagne. Our server was great but the kitchen was bad. Took an hour to get our appetizer and another hour for our entree. Food was just meh, chicken in the coc a vin was super dry, though the other item was good. The dish just doesn't work well. The lamb pasta was ok, but not worth the $50 price tag. The walnut chocolate bread pudding was TERRIBLE! The bread pudding was dry? How is this even possible! It was also topped with what we called a "wet condom" some sort of floppy rice paper thing, very strange and gross. Very disappointing as we used to love coming to John Ash. My family and I ate here on June 21st (a Sunday) to celebrate a birthday and father's day. Keep in mind we made these reservations almost 3 months in advance. When we arrived that night to our reservation at 7pm the hostess sat us to a patio table outside and informed us that the restaurant was closed for dining and it would just be bar service including light food. We were extremely confused as no one told us this. They said they tried to call us the day before to let us know that it would be closed but we had no cell service as we were visiting safari west for the weekend. She then informed us that this is a common procedure of their restaurant not being open on Sundays. My confusion here is 1) why did they not tell us when we made the reservations ahead of time that it would not be open for food or 2) if they forgot (thats fine its so far in advance) why are they only calling us the night before when they know fathers day is an extremely busy holiday knowing we wouldn't be able to find other options in time? With this we decided since we had no other options we would stay. We asked to be moved inside where it was warmer. Our waitress brought our drinks to our table inside and we proceeded to sit there for 30-45 minutes with her never coming back. My dad had to go up to the bartender asking if they were serving food in the bar and she asked if we wanted to see menus. We had already seen the menus at this point we just wanted to order. Our waitress just never came back...ever. So now the bartender had to come to our table to take our orders and serve us. Eventually we got our food, which was delicious so the two stars here are for the good food, and the manager came over to apologize for the confusion and let us pick a few things out on the dessert menu free of charge. We ordered some dessert and my father picked out a cappuccino. She promptly forgot the cappuccino and just never brought it. Once we were finished with the food they AGAIN just never came over to give us the bill. We had to get up again to ask to leave. Once then, they "lost" our bill and we had to wait around for them to resolve the issue. They were kind enough to remove a bunch of charges from the bill so in that they were accommodating. But all in all, the communication of this place is completely lacking. The servers and staff aren't talking to each other and letting them know who is taking over what sections. The ambiance looks great and I'm sure it's nice if you get to experience it on a normal day. But please, PLEASE inform guests who are making reservations on SUNDAYS who are expecting a full service meal that that is NOT what they will be getting. To call them a day before is just plain disrespectful, especially for guests traveling from out of town. And then to just completely forget about them mid service.... Just awful. Came here after searching for something tasty to eat. Decor here is very nice. You have big booths and bid dining tables. There's also a bar area. We were seated at a booth and our table was completely off. The tilt was basically slanted . We asked for a different table and were seated elsewhere. However instead of them fixing that table they sat someone else there. Strange! We then got our food and it was delicious! What I didn't care about what the server kept disappearing. I ran out of water and no one came to ask if we were ok. Then he came and asked about dessert and then I had the chance to ask for water. Our server sent someone else to give us the water. Last night we went with friends and had another great experience. The John Ash staff truly are a dedicated team, committed to continuing the John Ash fine dinning legacy. Tuesday in Sonoma County wine country, and we were looking for a more quiet and upscale Happy Hour. Needed a respite from the crowds. Well, we certainly found the perfect place and definitely off the "tourist" beaten path. John Ash & Co. Yelp was instrumental in locating this elegant and classy HH spot. Plus, seeing and reading a review by Yelp CM, Mary V., Healdsburg (speaking of classy), sealed the deal even though our destination was only for HH and not dinner about which she had written. However, after our visit, a return for dinner service would definitely be considered! Located in a more remote area of Santa Rosa, with such beautiful landscaping (including wine country's favorite...grape vines!), it was stunning from the minute you entered the grounds for sure! This is a resort. John Ash & Co is the trendy restaurant providing food for Vitners Resort (which includes a hotel and spa). The Front Room Bar and Lounge is in the restaurant where 3 of us enjoyed a serene and top-notch happy hour. (Served from 3 p.m., until 5 p.m., daily) A hostess greeted us and directed us to the very close by bar. First impressions...low key, casual elegance! And doing a nice business for 330 p.m., I might add. Loved the low lights, which contributed to the charming ambiance. And the roomy, comfortable chairs were perfect. (Lest I forget...a fireplace too. Think winter:) This is exactly what we wanted and needed. The well-dressed bartender came to our table just as we were sitting. He provided us with HH and regular menus. Took water orders and then gave us time to relax and peruse it all. During the course of an hour and more, we had two rounds of drinks and some fabulous HH appetizers. HH menu and photos incuded. If we had not been going to dinner elsewhere, we all agreed that dinner here would have been incredible. Great food, views, inside outside dining...what's not to like! This was one of Santa Rosa's first restaurants to bring the farm to table, local, and seasonal ingredients experience to the dining plate. Many of the herbs are grown on-site. So you would be in store for a memorable brunch, lunch, and dinner experience. Sadly, John Ash, Renaissance man for sure, passed away in March of 2023. The company has been sold to Jackson Family Wines, I believe. It looks like to me they are taking it in the right direction. And I expect many more good things to come. Excellent dining experience. They serve you a complimentory sea bass ceviche as a starter which was very flavorful. We ordered a tuna tartar and it is one of the best ones I have ever had. It was served with seaweed and aioli. I ordered halibut and it was served in a tomato based soup sauce with mini muscles and mashed corn. It reminded me of a Jambalaya and was delicious. There is also complimentary bread with homemade butter. The butter was to die for so was the jalapeno corn bread. I realized this was in my draft way back in 2015 and was never posted. This review is for HAPPY HOUR We used to come to happy hour here ALL the time when I lived down the street. It was right up there equal to Starks with food quality and prices, so I was shocked when coming here the other day. First off, I was surprised that the place was pretty empty because it used to be so popular it could be hard to even get a table. The $5 happy hr wine is now $12 a glass. Offering Angeline sav blanc which I just purchased at the local circle k for $12 a bottle. Appetizers which are always excellent range from $9-$11, but I will definitely reconsider when choosing where I meet up to have happy hour from now on! read more

During a recent trip (this past week), I brought friends from out of town to John Ash - the restaurant inside Vintners Inn. We chose a bottle of wine we wanted to enjoy with dinner and shared the selection with our server. Sometime had passed, and we thought perhaps they no longer had the bottle in inventory as they were taking a while. When our server returned with the bottle, he shared with us that the Sommelier had pulled him aside as they noticed an "error in the listing price of the bottle" and that he had been sent back to our table to "advise us that an adjustment had already been made to the price". The bottle we selected, which was listed at $65, had now become $265. The Sommelier had even gone as far to change the listing price on the digital tablet menu BEFORE sending the waiter spoke with us. Super tacky. We shared that while it was unfortunate to see an error had been made on their side, they advertised the price to us and we felt very strongly that the original price should be honored, period. We past on the bottle and told the waiter we really thought the whole approach was awful. He apologized and we tried to move on. But, what really rubbed me wrong was that not at one point during the dinner did any manager appear to even offer an apology, or address the error. They sent the waiter to apologize for them. The entire interaction was rather raw - ...'this is the new price he set and shared you can take it or leave it.' The wine was a Chev Pinot Noir by Michael Browne that sells for $85 from the winery. Through wholesale, the restaurant probably got it even cheaper. Maybe $65? To be asked to pay $265 for an $85 bottle on the heels of the error was in poor taste, and not in keeping with the reputation of what the restaurant used to be. After we left the restaurant, I actually sent an email to the hotel manager, and as of this writing, NO ONE FROM JOHN ASH OR VINTNERS has replied. I am not quite sure if I will ever want to return again, let alone rexommend it. The whole exchange was off-putting. I understand that restaurants have mark ups.... a 400% markup is robbery. To be honest with the yelp community you are better off driving by John Ash and finding a Starks restaurant, which is a few exits away. Each one of their locations has amazing curated wine lists, and they won't try to rob you over the markup. Don't get me wrong, there will be a markup... but $40 mark up as opposed to $200, seems more in line. To the mgmt at John Ash, people have choices on where they will spend their money. Maybe you need a reminder of that. read more

The place is over priced. The menu online is not accurate to the one in person. Online the Caesar salad is present and in person you have to ask for it because the menu doesn't have it. The food wasn't the best, the Caesar salad came with legit romaine lettuce not even cut. Wasn't the best Caesar salad I've ever had.. also chicken was extra charge but small portion for the salad. I asked for no archovies and it still came with some. The service is fine but could be improved. I went with a few friends and the waiter was more attentive than ours for the table next to us with an older couple. This isn't so much a complaint as a PSA - we came in for drinks before an event at LBCA and paid $39 before tip for one glass of local (nothing special) wine and one martini. I get that one can't expect it to be priced similarly to a basic bar but it seems excessive. If that doesn't turn you off, enjoy! I waited over 24 hours to write this. I recognize that the most expensive thing in a restaurant is an empty seat. My mother-in -law turned 88 yesterday. We went to John Ash because we had enjoyed ourselves there in the past and wanted to enjoy a meal with 3 generations. We arrived 10 minutes late for our brunch reservation. The young lady that sat us was very put-out that we were deciding between eating outside or inside . As I said, my mother-in-law is 88 years old and took a little time to decided to sit outside. With a dramatic eye roll , she sat us outside as we asked. She brought us the happy hour menus instead of the brunch menu we were hoping for. My wife went inside to ask for the other menu and was told that they were no longer serving brunch and that the Happy hour was more important. I get it. We were late, there are rules. We should have planned better. No problem. We all decided what we wanted off the happy hour menu. We were going to make the best of it. When no waiter had come to take our order, any order, in 20 minutes, we left and went to Willy's. Which we should have done originally. I cannot leave a review of the food because we did not eat at JA. However, the food at Willy's is always amazing. I recommend Willy's to everyone that asks. read more

I had an amazing birthday dinner last night with my boyfriend and I !! Our server was Annie and she was very attentive and friendly! Mariela, the server assistant was very attentive also! The head chef came out, Sergio (Annie said he was from Top Chef, Mexico- awesome!!) and presented us his delish gnocchi dish and added Parmesan foam with truffles from Italy!!!! Amazing experience! I wish I recorded the whole thing I had the Prawns and scallops on polenta, yummy and my boyfriend had the steak and fries, the steak was perfectly cooked medium-rare and he added a side of prawns and scallops (worth the extra $!). The cocktails were delish! I had the one with the numbers in the name ... nice and fruity and sweet if you're into that, and the espresso martini which was amazing!!
