Solid dinner spot from the son of the owners of Mama J's. Surprisingly not busy even on a Saturday night though. Food: Started with fried green tomatoes and Wingettes, which were both solid. The wings were fried well and fell off the bone - amazing. After that I had the fried trout and added jumbo shrimp, with sides of fries and mashed potatoes, as well as cornbread. Trout was pretty tasty and cooked well, but I wish the shrimp weren't so dry. My friends had the chicken dinner, the ribs, and the chicken and waffles. Can't speak for them personally but everyone enjoyed their meals! Drinks: I had the Bix mezcal cocktail which was great, basically a mezcal margarita with an edge of spice. Try it. I also tried the Rye cocktail which was also solid, crisp. Pros: Food Drinks Ambiance Cons: Service was somewhat slow even though not many people at restaurant Rather expensive Ran out of Mac and cheese... which simply didn't make sense on a relatively empty Saturday night.

I'm not understanding the 4 and 5 star reviews. We came on a slow night. In fact, we were the only group seated on the lower level with the exception of one couple. It took FOREVER for our food to be served (and I don't think the couple ever got their food). My ribeye was good enough. The Brussels sprouts were tart (ewww). The tacos were very uninspiring, and the pot pie was good enough. No standout dishes here. And service... again, the kitchen was definitely slow, but our waitress was a little lackluster as well. That said, the speakeasy juke joint through the tunnel next door is all the way live. GREAT jazz band was playing (didn't get their name), and the atmosphere is perfect for a night of jazz. Highly doubtful I'd ever return for food, but I would certainly go back for jazz.

Stopped in to eat before a show at the National at about 6:30pm and was easily able to sit at the bar. We got wine to start with and boy was it a healthy pour! Delightful! I got their special, a shrimp poboy and it was good! Also their fries were tasty! Fiancé got the burger and really enjoyed it! Would come back! This was maybe my 5th visit.

    Bento box lunch special

I've heard a lot of praise for Vagabond and finally came here for lunch. They offered quite a variety of dishes and I opted to try their fried chicken bento box which included fried chicken, a salad, fried rice, and a chocolate chip cookie. The chicken was nicely fried without being over battered and had good flavor but it was also really fatty and I wished the pieces had been trimmed better. The fried rice was bland and seemed like an after thought. I think the most disappointing part of the box was their cookie. It was overbaked and very hard which made it inedible. The food took a while to come out so we didn't want to huff about it. Our server was attentive and nice and even obliged when I made a special request to have a slice of their cake served (which they usually reserve just for dinner) since it was my friend's birthday. The dulce cake had good flavor, but was a little on the dry side. Their dinner menu looks more promising so I may come back to give that a try. Food: 1.5 Value: 2 Service: 4

Seriously awesome. It's right next to the National Theater and the food is pretty awesome. The only thing that I would say that sucks about this place is trying to find parking. :( It's on Broad street, so you better learn how to parallel park and to read the parking signs. There are some tricky signs that say that you can park here and there, but for a certain amount of hours and after what time. SO..be sure to read the signs and bring change if you need to. Most parking reads that it is a free for all after 6pm. :) As for the place, it's pretty roomy and the atmosphere is very nice. My husband and I were coming here to double date with a coworker and they've always wanted to try this place as well. We started out with a bubble wine, I don't remember what it was called, but it was great choice (haha, I'm so sorry that I can't be helpful with the drinks). I would suggest getting different plates of food so that you get to try as many as you can! :) We ended up splitting this medium and large plates: evening special of seasoned ribs (very delish), Ancho Cocoa Smoked Lamb Shoulder Tostada, Double Fried Duck, Duck Gumbo, Chicken Fried Rabbit, and Fried Rockshrimp Po'boy. All dishes were really great. I love how each dish was pretty unique and savory. I would say that this place seems better for the savory dishes rather than desserts. My favorite dish was most likely the duck gumbo. It was so tasty and had the right amount of spice. It seriously worth a shot to try there. The staffs were very friendly and super helpful. I will def be coming back again!

Venison with apples, Brussels sprouts and almonds.

The entire menu selection looked wonderful. I choose the venison with apples, Brussels sprouts, and almonds. The Vinson was prepared to perfection and the flavor a blended so well. Cocktails up to the old Magpie's standards. There was a good selection of craft beers. The wait staff was on point the whole night There is both an upstairs and downstairs. While downstairs has no natural light but the decor was relaxing. The menu rivals if not exceeds Magpie. A downtown gem next the the National.

Restaurant is nice ! Location is easy to find broad Street ,next to the national venue. Cons :the service is extremely slow! Waited in a crowded bar area for at least an hour before they called us. No reservations are taken at this establishment, which is a bad idea! maitre D was very slow and seemed sluggish to inform guest that their tables were ready. Not to many options for health conscious people. A big southern influence ..salty and fried! The pork chop bites were tender but salty! Would return for the music in the Rabbit Hole! Great venue for weekly jazz, karoke and networking .

I came to dinner with a party of 10. This was all of our first time patronizing the restaurant. It took 45 minutes for us to receive our food. Did they have to hunt it, kill and cook it? The food was less than desirable. The greens were gritty, which meant that they were not properly cleaned. One person in my party did not receive her food. Her meal ended up being comped because they had to cook her food after the party received theirs. This is also not a kid/ vegetarian/vegan restaurant. On a positive note, the servers were nice and the staff was accommodating.

I was really looking forward to visiting this restaurant, and I really want to assume that I didn't have the best experience based on what I ordered. The piece fish inside of the fish sandwich was so small and the bread was extremely too thick. I couldn't even eat it all because it wasn't enjoyable. The French fries my friend ordered were so salty we had to send them back for a fresh, unseasoned batch. My French fries had more pepper than salt, which I was okay with. Their menu seems pretty good (again, I think I just ordered the wrong thing) so I wouldn't mind given them a try again when I'm back in town.

    Chicken and Waffles

Our food took over an hour to come out. OVER AN HOUR. It was not busy in the restaurant, nobody ordered anything elaborate. Honestly, for how much time it took, I thought they had to go find a chicken roaming around downtown Richmond, kill it, prepare it, and cook it. With that said, sometimes the food is worth the wait. Unfortunately, that fell short here as well. I ordered chicken and waffles, and it was the saddest chicken and waffles I've ever seen. It was a small, thin waffle and two small pieces of chicken that had more breading than meat. The meal tasted fine, but if I'm going to wait an hour for food, it's gotta be better than fine. My husband got the beef back ribs. The meat was extremely chewy and the sides were very small. On the positive side, the cocktails are good and it's got a cool ambiance. However, the Richmond restaurant scene is so great, that I can get all of the above DONE VERY WELL, in under an hour.

    Mushroom Risotto
    Charm W.

My husband and I came in from Virginia Beach yesterday and ate here right before the show at the National. I had read that as long as each person spends $15+ on meals and/or drinks they would get early admission into the concert. The concert started at 7 pm, so I made a reservation for 5 pm. We got there close to 5 pm, and were seated immediately. We told the hostess we were also going to the Matisyahu concert, so she informed us to be downstairs no later than 6:45 pm with our tickets. I ordered the Mushroom Risotto and my husband ordered 2 tacos. My order was AMAZING! Cooked perfectly with just the right amount of chopped mushrooms. It was topped with what I believe was sweet potato strips and a soft boiled egg. At first, I had no clue what the white thing was on top, but once I broke it open, I was pleasantly surprised. I can't really speak on the taco's since I only had a little taste. The service was quick and attentive. Our waitress gave us water immediately and took our drink order. My waitress had a shadow that day, who was very knowledgeable about the food and cocktails. She was actually the one who had recommended my cocktail. I can't remember the name, but I think it had ginger beer and cinnamon in it? It was tasty! So after dinner, we left Vagabond and came back around 6:30 pm. That is when the hostess said, "oh, you were supposed to be here at 6:15 pm." To her credit, she quickly realized it was her mistake, so she spoke to her manager. To make up for any confusion, they were able to upgrade our tickets to the VIP balcony area. Score! Thank you Vagabond, the sweet hostess, manager and our waitresses for making this an enjoyable experience for the both of us! I will definitely recommend this place to my friends who visit Richmond, especially those planning to see a show at the National.

Can i get specific details on the early entry that is offered into the national?

You have to spend over $15 from their menu to get that service and I recommend arriving as soon as the restaurant opens and tell them your wishes.

Soon after we. Ordered the octopus and mussel appetizers a storm came in and the rain fell pretty hard. Our choices were to run back to the hotel or stay and dine huddled under an umbrella. Being a little wet with beverages and good food seemed the better option so we ordered more food. The octopus was great. I have tried it prepared many ways and here it was both tender and flavorful, really done well. Shrimp cocktail is usually pretty basic, but often the simplest dishes demonstrate the most skill. This is truly one of the best I have ever had. The shrimp were plump and flavorful. Their cooking stopped at just the right time leaving a slight bit of translucent hue, but still cooked through. Very nicely done. The salad with home ranch was dressed nicely and the dressing was light. The scallops were cooked well and perhaps my only criticism is that the corn purée was better in concept than execution. I can't say enough about the staff. We were two people on a Sunday night crazy enough to dine in a downpour. The staff never made us feel like they wanted to punch out, embraced us being outside and were creative in waiting on us with umbrellas to keep the food from getting wet. It would have been understandable for them to limit the trips to check on us, but they persevered and made us feel welcome. If you are in the area, highly recommended stopping by, rain or shine, and sampling their menu. Nicely done.

I had the poke bowl last time, and I remember it being chilled and gently flavored. The avocado and spicy mayo did a lot of the heavy lifting. It was filling and very healthy. My partner enjoyed the Ipanema Sandwich last time we visited. This time around we snacked on the fried halloumi (fried cheese and mint yogurt dip) and Lumpia, taquito-type beef rolls, with sweet and sour dip. Our server, Nadia, was an enchanting brunette, training another young server, Sierra. She took our drink orders and gave us plenty of time to review the menu, checking in after a few minutes to see if we were ready. We finally decided, my partner ordered the 10" Bianca White (pizza), and I chose the Sailor Sandwich. Unfortunately, the sailor was not in the cards for me, and Nadia suggested the Reuben as they were similar. They brought out breadsticks while we waited, and the food arrived within 10-15 minutes. I was pleased with the atmosphere, the old-fashioned chandeliers, the large mirror, the floral paintings, and the rustic frames, all of which added to the restaurant's stated aesthetic. The pizza was hot and savory, while the Reuben had buttery toast, crispy corned beef, and a light smattering of sauerkraut (TBH, I didn't even notice the sauerkraut). For dessert, we indulged in the upside-down walnut apple pie, served with vanilla ice cream, all made from scratch, and beautifully delicate. Our time at Tarrant's Cafe seemed like a stroll into the past; the only indication of modernity was the ordering kiosk used by the staff. We truly enjoyed our time and had deeply meaningful conversations without enduring the hustle and bustle or the rowdy cacophony of an intense crowd.
