First time here for a birthday celebration on a Wednesday night!! (Jazz night) and I must say..I'm quite impressed. We had a private party with about 17 people. They had our section ready for us upon arrival..immediately starting bringing water to the table. Taking drink orders..etc. our server Brooke was extremely patient with us and we did have one concern about the AC being unbearably cold..she even adjusted the temp for us with no complaints!!! Food-- Wings!!!!! Yum. The breaded wings were super crunchy! I opted for the Eddy's sauce which was kinda a spicy bbq but our server said was most popular! It was delicious. Solid dinner spot from the son of the owners of Mama J's. Surprisingly not busy even on a Saturday night though. Food: Started with fried green tomatoes and Wingettes, which were both solid. The wings were fried well and fell off the bone - amazing. After that I had the fried trout and added jumbo shrimp, with sides of fries and mashed potatoes, as well as cornbread. Trout was pretty tasty and cooked well, but I wish the shrimp weren't so dry. My friends had the chicken dinner, the ribs, and the chicken and waffles. Can't speak for them personally but everyone enjoyed their meals! Drinks: I had the Bix mezcal cocktail which was great, basically a mezcal margarita with an edge of spice. Try it. I'm not understanding the 4 and 5 star reviews. We came on a slow night. In fact, we were the only group seated on the lower level with the exception of one couple. It took FOREVER for our food to be served (and I don't think the couple ever got their food). My ribeye was good enough. The Brussels sprouts were tart (ewww). The tacos were very uninspiring, and the pot pie was good enough. No standout dishes here. And service... again, the kitchen was definitely slow, but our waitress was a little lackluster as well. That said, the speakeasy juke joint through the tunnel next door is all the way live. GREAT jazz band was playing (didn't get their name), and the atmosphere is perfect for a night of jazz. I've heard a lot of praise for Vagabond and finally came here for lunch. They offered quite a variety of dishes and I opted to try their fried chicken bento box which included fried chicken, a salad, fried rice, and a chocolate chip cookie. The chicken was nicely fried without being over battered and had good flavor but it was also really fatty and I wished the pieces had been trimmed better. The fried rice was bland and seemed like an after thought. I think the most disappointing part of the box was their cookie. It was overbaked and very hard which made it inedible. The food took a while to come out so we didn't want to huff about it. Our server was attentive and nice and even obliged when I made a special request to have a slice of their cake served (which they usually reserve just for dinner) since it was my friend's birthday. Seriously awesome. It's right next to the National Theater and the food is pretty awesome. The only thing that I would say that sucks about this place is trying to find parking. :( It's on Broad street, so you better learn how to parallel park and to read the parking signs. There are some tricky signs that say that you can park here and there, but for a certain amount of hours and after what time. SO..be sure to read the signs and bring change if you need to. Most parking reads that it is a free for all after 6pm. :) As for the place, it's pretty roomy and the atmosphere is very nice. My husband and I were coming here to double date with a coworker and they've always wanted to try this place as well. We started out with a bubble wine, I don't remember what it was called, but it was great choice (haha, I'm so sorry that I can't be helpful with the drinks). I would suggest getting different plates of food so that you get to try as many as you can! :) We ended up splitting this medium and large plates: evening special of seasoned ribs (very delish), Ancho Cocoa Smoked Lamb Shoulder Tostada, Double Fried Duck, Duck Gumbo, Chicken Fried Rabbit, and Fried Rockshrimp Po'boy. All dishes were really great. I love how each dish was pretty unique and savory. I would say that this place seems better for the savory dishes rather than desserts. Not sure what has happened to this establishment but the change since my first visit around a year ago is quite drastic. The food is very basic and uninteresting or well-prepared add to that immature staff that congregates at the bar and is loud and obnoxious. Who does that? DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME !!!!! Purchased tickets at Eventbrite for the Legacy Band performance at Vagabond 3/9/24 at 8:30 PM. No one answers the phone. Waited on line outside for 20 minutes to enter the venue. The so- called is dark, dim, dirty and serves food in Styrofoam trays. The "Rabbit Hole" lives up to its name. There was a bar with no stools, band instruments on display with no musicians and a DJ spinning. There were three sitting areas with couches. There were four people sitting on one of the couches as soon as we walked in and the other sitting areas had "Reserve "signs. Shocked by the exploitation, disrespect and subpar-treatment to the minority patrons, I sought out the manager who informed that the Vagabond advertises "very limited seating" and that he was well aware of the fact that there was only one couch available for open seating! I explained to him that four available seats in a venue is unacceptable and seating should in fact NOT be advertised all. Unapologetically, this white young man was more than inclined to acquiesce to my request for a refund and escorted my friend and I to the front to return our wristbands. Being fairly new to VA and having never patronized the Vagabond before, I would certainly caution against patronizing this venue for paid events as it was an all-around disappointing and negative experience, so save yourself a trip!!. read more

This has definitely become my go to spot on Friday nights. The vibe in here is great. It's a great place to mingle and dance to good music. On Fridays they have a deejay and it's never too crowded. The upstairs is more of a chill and drink spot, while downstairs in the "Rabbit Hole" is where the dancing takes place. Great place to have fun and meet people. It's not rowdy like some of the other places in Richmond. And the bartenders are on point! read more

I had to go to the rest room in the middle of dinner and I went down the wrong steps in the rear of the restaurant. When I saw the condition of the kitchen and the chefs had long scraggly beards and hair without hair nets I was out! I found the bathroom and threw up everything I had eaten. My husband and I came in from Virginia Beach yesterday and ate here right before the show at the National. I had read that as long as each person spends $15+ on meals and/or drinks they would get early admission into the concert. The concert started at 7 pm, so I made a reservation for 5 pm. We got there close to 5 pm, and were seated immediately. We told the hostess we were also going to the Matisyahu concert, so she informed us to be downstairs no later than 6:45 pm with our tickets. I ordered the Mushroom Risotto and my husband ordered 2 tacos. My order was AMAZING! Cooked perfectly with just the right amount of chopped mushrooms. It was topped with what I believe was sweet potato strips and a soft boiled egg. At first, I had no clue what the white thing was on top, but once I broke it open, I was pleasantly surprised. I can't really speak on the taco's since I only had a little taste. The service was quick and attentive. Our waitress gave us water immediately and took our drink order. My waitress had a shadow that day, who was very knowledgeable about the food and cocktails. She was actually the one who had recommended my cocktail. I can't remember the name, but I think it had ginger beer and cinnamon in it? It was tasty! So after dinner, we left Vagabond and came back around 6:30 pm. That is when the hostess said, "oh, you were supposed to be here at 6:15 pm." To her credit, she quickly realized it was her mistake, so she spoke to her manager. To make up for any confusion, they were able to upgrade our tickets to the VIP balcony area. Score! Thank you Vagabond, the sweet hostess, manager and our waitresses for making this an enjoyable experience for the both of us! Color me impressed! Vagabond was nothing like I expected it to be (in a good way!). It is a foodie paradise right in the midst of a busy block of Broad Street (right next to The National). When you think of a restaurant next to a music venue, you don't necessarily assume that they have the best food. Well! Anyone who works in this area or finds themselves here because of a show at The National, you'd be doing yourself a grave disservice if you didn't pop into Vagabond. My whole experience from start to finish was impeccable. I thought that they had valet service every day of the week, but it turns out that's just on weekends. The hostess was super nice about it and I rushed out to move my car to a parking deck close by. When I came back in, she seated me downstairs in what is probably the best basement seating in Richmond. It is cozy, well decorated, and plenty of room for a group. I'm thinking it would be a great spot for a group of girlfriends to hang out, or a celebratory family dinner! I admit, the reason why I hadn't been to vagabond yet is because I thought the prices were going to be insane. That's why, my friends, it's never good to assume. For $26, I got the smoked chicken wings, mixed greens salad, and some amazing kahlua-y, custard-y, créme brulée-y dessert concoction that I can't even explain. Seriously guys, the prices are very reasonable. The 5 star rating should tip you off to the fact that I loved my food. The only thing I'll say is that the kalamata vinaigrette on the mixed greens salad was a little too salty for my taste... but that's because I don't like olives. I was visiting Richmond and decided to try Vagabond with some friends since it was only a few blocks from my hotel. We came with a reservation and were seated almost immediately. Once all of our party arrived, we ordered drinks. At this point our experience began to worsen. It took a very long time (15 min) to get our drinks. Our waitress disappeared for an unreasonable amount of time (20 min) before we could finally order appetizers and entrees. The appetizers came out in about 10 minutes. We ordered brussels sprouts and candied bacon. Loved the brussels sprouts. The bacon was thick and tasty though not what I'd consider candied. Small thing that bothered me was that we received 5 pieces of bacon but there were 6 of us in my party. We then waited again a long time (30 min) to receive our entrees. During this wait we almost never saw our waitress, meanwhile we all ran out of water. The food finally came and was good but not great. I ordered the cheeseburger with a fried egg. The flavor didn't blow me away, the egg was over hard (or beyond), and the fries weren't very crisp. Our wait was just as long, or longer, for the check. Again it was almost impossible to find our waitress. We didn't blame her, I think she was just in charge of too many tables. Our dinner was just shy of 3 hours because of all this waiting. Very impressed. We've been wanting to try Vagabond since we were huge fans of Magpie, Chef Owen's old restaurant, and we we're not disappointed! I dare to say that I like the atmosphere at Vagabond even more than Magpie. The space is very open and has a classy, yet modern feet to it. Our service was amazing. Our server was very attentive and QUICK and was very thorough in telling us the specials for the night. Their cocktail menu is fantastic. Really unique craft cocktails with drinks I'd never dreamed of. I don't remember the exact name of my drink... but it had gin and coconut soda... so good. For an appetizer we split the Pulled Rabbit Flat bread, which was so flavorful and the perfect size to split. My entree was the Roasted Fish Du Jour, which was a rockfish that day, and my friend had the gnocchi with sausage. My fish was amazing. Cooked to perfection with a crispy, flavorful, crust, and I ate every last bite... but.... the gnocchi stole my heart. After one bite off my friends plate I had serious meal envy... the pumpkin puree sauce was creamy without being too heavy or overpowering.. and the sausage... THE SAUSAGE.... I think that was the finest Po Boy sandwich I have ever had. I have only had the pleasure of having lunch at Vagabond and look forward to trying dinner at some point. I was a big fan of Magpie. The lunch menu had a number of interesting items. I was having trouble deciding between the pork cheek tacos and the oyster Po Boy. But since I have never met an oyster I did not like, I opted for the Po Boy. Other members of my lunch party opted for the beet salad, the Adult Bologna sandwich and another Po Boy. Everyone was delighted with their order. Service was quite nice, too. Friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. I was so disappointed at this place. So disappointed that I'd probably never return. I visited here for a team meeting. I learned later that it was another Mama's J's establishment continuing to operate under Vagabond. There isn't much of a menu. Anywho, I ordered the garlic parm wings, and the chicken and gravy bowl with the mashed potatoes. I wasn't that impressed with the garlic parm wings, their garlic parm sauce is more like a paste than a sauce and tastes more mayo(ey) than anything. I then ordered the chicken bowl, with the mashed potatoes and gravy. The chicken was overcooked and extremely dry, the mashed potatoes were very lumpy (not sure if they were supposed to be this way to let you know they are real) and extremely thick. There wasn't enough gravy on the potatoes in which I had to ask for more, and it was not topped with bacon as advertised. The only thing that remotely saved this meal was that cornbread skillet with the honey butter. That was the highlight of the meal. Would I return? Probably not. read more

So I am in a cooking club with 10 other girlfriends, ironically this cooking club has been 10 years strong with some that have left, some new girls that have joined and probably 5 of us that have remained constant. Typically we meet once a month and we each take turns hosting. The person that hosts designs a dinner menu ( sometimes we end up having a 10 course meal if all the girls can make it) sometimes with a theme in mind or sometimes just a bunch of recipes they want to try. Everyone gets assigned a dish and the host typically prepares the main course. Every year we try to go out to dinner as a group to take a break from cooking. Anyway, I was originally supposed to host October but figured we should go out to restaurant week instead, so I'm going to host November. We all wanted to try a place we hadn't been to before. Out of the 10 girls we had 9 that made it. Out of the 9 only one has been to Vagabond... but only for lunch not for dinner. Needless to say our group was eager to check it out. Plus the menu looked awesome for restaurant week... there is no better way to try a new place especially when you get a three course meal! For my first course I ordered Ramen (it came with crispy seared Pork Belly was delicious added a nice texture to the ramen, wild mushrooms that I could tell were fresh, pickled greens possibly kale which reminded me of chinese pickled mustard greens- one of my favorites, in what I call a not so Miso broth... the menu indicated Miso but it was more like a soy sauce based broth. It was good... but I'll be honest, I've had better ramen, plus it was actually lukewarm which made it not as enjoyable as it could have been. I'll blame it on restaurant week since the place was pretty packed and I'm sure they were making spooning ramen into bowls non stop and leaving them there until they were picked up and provided to each table. The second course main course I ordered the duck. I actually asked the waitress what she would recommend between the lamb or the duck and since no one at my table ordered duck she said I should try it as it's really good. Good recommendation from our waitress, the duck did not disappoint. It was seared to perfection! It may not look super appetizing as the duck sat on a bed of mole, granola (which added a very interesting but great texture), pomegranate seeds and roasted pumpkin (after reading about canned pumpkin is most likely butternut squash since it gives off a sweeter taste it kind of made me wonder if they actually used pumpkin or was it butternut squash... unfortunately my palette is not strong enough to distinguish the difference... all I know is that it was tasty) ... never would've imagined the combo but it all worked. The only complaint I have is that certain bites were a little heavily salted than others... possibly the mole, if it wasn't mixed well during preparation. But all in all it was really delicious so props to our waitress from suggesting it! Last but not least for my third course which I have to say I was really sad that they ran out of the Pumpkin Milkshake with Gingersnap :( most of our table ended up with the S'mores (graham cracker cake ... which probably would've been better hot as I found it quite dry... didn't really taste much graham cracker maybe some graham cracker crumbles would've enhanced the taste. I did like that the cake seemed like it was grilled at one point so it added a nice charred taste that you get from s'mores. The chocolate mouse on top was actually pretty good not overly sweet... I actually thought it was frosting at first though. Loved the flamed marshmallows as that definitely made the dessert more flavorful. Normally I am not a big Marshmallow fan as I don't really like the consistency but that worked since the marshmallow was gooey from the flame. Atmosphere was great! I made my reservation on Yelp for 8 originally and had to add one more last minute today so I called them up as it was indicated on Yelp and they graciously changed the reservation to 9 people. We sat at a big Farmhouse table downstairs, it was a great space for our big group! All in all I enjoyed my experience there and would totally go back to try out other things on the menu. read more

We went to eat here before a concert at the coliseum and we knew it would be busy. We waited about 10 minutes for a table and were seated and our waitress was very attentive and nice. I have a food allergy which, even though they were extremely busy, still went to the kitchen and made sure I would be ok with my order. I had the trout with Mac and cheese and collard greens and everything was really good. No salt or pepper required, which for a guy who has a garlic allergy, I always use a ton of pepper. The draft beers are a little pricey at $8 a draft but there is a good selection. It took us about 20 minutes if not longer to get our food but again they were having a very busy night. They have me a free beer for taking so long with the wait which was nice. Menu is a little pricey but the food we had was excellent. We would come back. read more

Great restaurant. Quaint. First time dining here as I made it my second stop for Richmond Black Restaurant Week. Wish they had music playing. The food was soo good. I had the blacked salmon sandwich with fries. Soo good! The salmon was obviously my favorite part. My boyfriend had a salmon salad. It looked good!! We finished the meal with Virginia Apple Brandy bread pudding! Amazing! read more

Decided to eat dinner downtown Richmond before the 90s Old School concert at the coliseum. Heard about The Vagabond from the sister restaurant Mama J's. Very spacious and no wait times very simple but Delois's menu. Cocktails are very original and well crafted. I had the fried Trout meal nicely presented and prepared. Serving sizes are very filling, adding the fried green tomatoes for appetizers didn't help either (very good). I will return to this restaurant in the future. read more

I'd enjoyed my dinner at Vagabond, the service was prompt and friendly. The vibe felt trendy, yet casual. They were very welcoming and since we were seated by the window we had a great view of the city. The food was fine, I ordered the crispy brussel sprouts and the tempura fried cauliflower, the batter on it wasn't very crispy and the buffalo sauce was bland. The drinks were really good and they had a cool variety to choose from. I'll be back for sure. read more

Vagabond has taken a turn for the worse. What used to be a great menu with amazing cocktails is now an average menu with non inspiring food and average at best cocktails. The bartenders, which previously knew what they were doing, making amazing cocktails (that burnt orange, tobacco syrup bourbon drink they made was incredible), now are making nothing special. I agree this may appeal to a large audience coming in and out before attending a show next door. IF that is your plan then staff up on nights that a show is going on next door so that table dont sit dirty for an hour, the bartender isn't causing a 30 minute wait to get a drink. Overall I'd say they have room for improvement read more
