I have been using the EDDM service for the past four years. Eight out of the 10 times the people don't know how to check me out and I end up waiting in line longer than everybody else until the one person who knows how to check me out properly is available. I'm extremely organized every route is already in order and packaged separately. I pay online it should not take more than three or four minutes to complete my transaction. Yesterday along with many other days, I spent 45 minutes for the THIRD person to help me check out. I pay over $500 for the service each month and it's absolute bullshit. zero stars - this office is the worst run enterprise in the US. Any other Post Office in San Mateo or any other city or state is just fine, it is just this one location. they can't get anything right and it's been that way for at least 25 years. Vacation holds are sure to go awry, with a pile of mail and parcels on my doorstep when i get home or no mail when i return until I go down there to complain. The local carriers are good but they always get booted off the route after 6 - 12 months. How can anything work well if they are perpetually re-bidding the routes and replacing experienced carriers with new people. All the workers that want to do a good job are demoralized and beaten down, then they shut down and become part of the problem. Package with delivered to the post office over a week ago by OnTrac and still hasn't been delivered to my house. I tried to call them to see where it was and no one answered. I'm a little frustrated that I now have to drive to the post office to see where my package is and most likely be told they can't find it. read more

Please avoid setting up a POBox in this branch. Avoid the mail clerk Marissa, as she is very incompetent and rude. I only had my POB for 1.5 months, and I had several issues already. My deliveries are not placed in my mailbox and most of my deliveries were often missing. I had to always track and check online in order to retrieve my packages. I pay a very expensive monthly fee for the large PO box and I pay on time. So if they cannot place my deliveries inside my mailbox on time, at least keep the customer informed of the pickup schedule. Rude behavior and unprofessional treatment of customers is unacceptable in any business. The supervisor Cristy was nice by the way, and tried to resolve the issues. Kudos to her. But she should train her clerk Marissa to act more professionally with customers. In fact, this is not an isolated case. The USPS should require a mandatory customer service relation training for all their employees, as it is getting prevalent among USPS offices, with most customers now complaining of rudeness and unprofessionalism among the mail clerks. I am paying for a very expensive PO box at the US Postal office thinking that I will get my mails and package on time, unfortunately, this is not th case with San Mateo branch. In the 1.5 month I had my box I have only experienced rudeness, and untimely deliveries and missing packages. I am never going to recommend this branch to anyone. Also, avoid this branch if you're Asian or Black. From what I observed, they are mostly nice to white customers only. read more

I see most bad reviews are related to dropping or picking up packages. I went there first time today and had no problems mailing out stuff. The staff was very friendly, kept saying "sorry for waiting". I especially like the fact they have a good sized parking lot and I found parking easily although I could see later it became pretty crowded (lunch time). Overall, I found it convenient. read more

There are many different post offices in San Mateo, and I have been to both. There is one in downtown San Mateo on corner of 3rd and B street which I think is less crowded. Many are crowded because they are the more well known. HOWEVER, THERE ARE 5 DIFFERENT POST OFFICES IN SAN MATEO, here is a website with all the addresses. Unfriendly, rude, and racist in my opinion. Went here to ship some international documents and we filled the forms out wrong. The lady told us that we were not very smart and since we were Asian said that we needed to "eat more bags of rice". She probably ripped us off too. She said priority doesn't have tracking information and that it was best to go with express mail. Ended up costing 48. Go to another post office if you can. Great service, even if the lines are long. Parking is great, east access from CA-92 and ... they now sell greeting cards w/out sales tax! I would definitely recommend this USPS branch. This is not the place to open up a PO Box. Ignorant staff who only knows how to use a scale. It is one thing to be ignorant, it is quite another to be unethical. Jun, the guy who's distributing mails to PO Box at this post office intentionally returned my letter containing $4000 check back to sender simply because my address included an extra line for their street address in addition to the standard PO box number. He told me that he knew it was for my PO box and he purposely returned my letter to "educate" me to use the mailing address without street name. Well, educate your own staff not to give out wrong address to clients first because this address was given to me by their clerk in her own handwriting! I thought it won't hurt since the PO box number and zip code are all correct, and maybe this place has their higher standard asking clients to also include street address. Little did I know it was simply a mistake made on their part. I was given wrong instructions on several occasions and not just this one time. I found at least two clerks have no knowledge about their PO Box service. Well, at least they were trying to be friendly. Do you trust someone with your mails who will deliberately screw up? I would not recommend anyone to come to this location for anything out of ordinary. read more

EVERY hard working employee at this post office provide most stellar customer service! Most notably, DEBBIE who's most consistent, positive attitude is always prevailing! These fine people work so diligently hard, are groosly underpaid, tolerate less than desirable customers' attitudes EVERY DAY often accompanied by unnecessary name calling; while always maintaining a calm, patient, demeanor. I utilize this post office at least 3 to 4 times a week, thus I see this underserving, down right rude employee bashing first hand. Ironically, the majority of the rude patrons & those who write poor reviews are posted by "customers" who's average annual salary exceeds 150K who are protected by "HR" if they should be remotely teated so poorly. These "overpaid whiners" need to check themselves, count their blessings & get off their high horse ~ postal employees are not "personal servants" nor "negative soundboards" for those who believe they're entitled to be treated as though they are royalty. Don't care for USPS customer service? I called about a week ago to book an appointment for my daughter's passport renewal. I was told that they didn't give out appointments and it was walk-in. My wife and I took off from work today, didn't send my 5 yr old to school and went there with our 5 yr old and a 10 month old. Surprise, surprise! Not only do they need appt, the lady at the counter, by the name of (PARAMJIT) was very rude. She insisted that none of the employees would have given me the wrong information. She wanted to know what day/time I had called and whom I spoke to. Of course, I had not taken down that information and brought it with me to the post office. When I tried to explain to her that I was not lying, she announced : "next in line". Extremely rude. Thanks to the APC, there are only these few occasions when you have to interact with a postal employee. On the bright side, it was a sunny, pleasant day and the time off with my daughter was worth it! read more

Found a orange notice telling us there was a registered mail that needed a signature. 3 days later to go pick up letter, they can't find it, they tell me its out for delivery. A week later I go in and tell them where is the letter? They tell me carrier accidentally threw it in the return to sender yet the letter had not return address, but came from Germany. WTF! Really? I'm busting my brain waiting for a package USPS sent back to a sender, but will end up in undeliverable mail in VA? At which point they will open because that is what they do with undeliverable mail. If it was up to me, I would fire everyone that presently works for them and hire all new people that need jobs because they would probably do a hell of a better job than these guys are doing. read more

This place was conveniently so close to where I lived. However, this place is always busy and the parking lot is almost always full. The wait to buy stamps, pick up or send off a package is long even when full staff is in service. This location is only open until 12:30 on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. My suggestion is that since this location brings in lots of people, they should try and extend their hours of operation. I know that might not be realistic since our economy is in recession but it can help lift some of the problems of waiting in long lines. read more

I was there on last saturday to renew my kids passport and it looks like that I have to take an appointment for that Mon-Friday Only so I asked one of the employees Whos name was GERRY a pen to write down the phone contact number for the appointment saying "excuse me can I borrow a pen??" while he was taking care of another custemor (or person) without looking at me his answer was " DON'T BOTHER ME NOW" ....................................................... well I guess not all of who works there are as GERRY. read more

I like this post office for a very simple reason-- it gets my mail delivered quickly. This seems to be the collection/distribution center for San Mateo; it's certainly the largest facility of the three SM post offices I know of. Domestic First-Class Parcels that I drop off here often get delivered in 2-3 days, mostly depending on the destination's distance from a major city. If I drop off stuff at one of the smaller branches or into a random mailbox elsewhere, it adds at least one extra day to the delivery time. They have a self-service postage kiosk here, which the downtown San Mateo branch also has but which the 25th Ave branch doesn't. They also have two huge drive-by drop-off boxes near the exit to their parking lot, though that can be dicey to navigate during the busy holiday mailing season. My biggest complaint is the inadequate parking lot, but there's not much they can do about that. If I have the time and my package load isn't too huge, I'll often park in the Michael's/Kmart lot instead and get a few minutes of fresh air and exercise while strolling the half-block there and back. (And then peek into Michael's or Kmart for something to buy in exchange for using their lot.) read more

Visit to the post office around 11AM or after 2PM is what I found to be the ideal time to avoid long lines and busy parking lot.

I just moved to San Mateo last month. I had a few issues with the mail delivery person and attempted to resolve them by calling this office and working with management. I was told a multiple occasions that I'd be called back and wasn't. The postmaster alleged that I was a liar and was attempting to play 'word games' with her. Having a monopoly creates an adversarial relationship with 'customers'. Good luck world. read more

I waited in line for 30 minutes wanting to pick up a package with my notice. There were ppl ahead of me who had notices and picked up their packages. However, when I got to a window to pick mine up, the person who helped me waved and told everyone who was in line to pick up a package to come behind me and get out of line and hand her all their notices so she wouldn't have to make multiple trips to get packages. I waited for another 30 minutes for my package because she had taken everyone else's before mine. I really think things can be done in a more efficient manner and the process of either picking up packages or buying stamps/mailing packages should be clearly separated. read more

Not sure why this post office turned for the worst! They use to have at least a 3 star rating and now it's 2! Well, I can tell you why. Try not to deal with the older Asian lady with the short hair and high cheek bones. I wish I got her name. She was in such a bithcy mood this morning! I asked her for a drop off receipt and she asked me back if I wanted a receipt and I got real confused as to why she's asking me since that's what I asked for initially. I didn't say anything for a few seconds so she checked in my package without giving me anything and then just threw the package into their bin. Well, I did get my receipt from her but she was totally arguing with me before she did that. What a way to start a Monday morning! read more

ZERO STARS!! I can't even begin to list all the things that are wrong with this post office. I know that all the mail shuffles through this location before it is delivered to the surrounding businesses and homes. I've never had more mail being delayed than through this office. Mailing a payment from San Mateo to Sunnyvale should not take more than 3 business days tops, however it's been 14 days and somehow it hasn't been delivered. Yet everything else that I mailed that same that has been received. I've even had a package delivered to me without them even updating the tracking status online. How am I supposed to accurately know when a package's delivery date? I've had a mailman yell at me for just trying to get my mail in my complex. He even started complaining that the San Mateo post office can't even get their sh*t together because they don't know how to put things in order. This is coming from an actual USPS employee! This location has no credibility when it comes the whole package. I've never encountered so many mailing issues until I moved to this area. Two thumbs down for this location!!! read more

This place sucks--even by USPS standards, and thats pretty low. Staff are rude, slow, and could care less. Once was told, in response to something I asked for being out of stock, 'We'll thats too bad.' Another day, a staff member got pissed at me for asking for a USPS box--that is supposed to be stocked in the lobby. This office looks like an abandoned building from the outside. I get the Post Office is hemorrhaging cash and there are less folks working there, but goodness I am embarrassed as an American to see the outside of this building. Weeds and dry planter beds, trash all over the bushes and landscaping both in the front and the sides. I get this is a big distribution site with lots of activity but I don't see how a USPS Leader walking those grounds could miss it. here's why I'm giving this post office the four star treatment: the passport service! yep, they have an awesome walk up passport application room (its thru a door that is marked clearly inside the actual post office where the postal people work) We ended up using this service in order to get our newborn son his passport. Gotta be prepared as they say!!! Super easy. Sometimes there's gonna be a wait but just be patient. it aint too bad. read more

This branch is not accurate about their mail tracking. My packages stated that it was delivered on 4/19/14, but it's 4/21 and still no packages! Why would they update the tracking information to show delivered when I haven't even received it yet. This is the 3rd time that this branch has not delivered any of my mail or packages to me according to my tracking updates. I've now had to email them twice to get them to track down my packages! This is just unacceptable. If I pay for priority shipping, I expect to get my money's worth! I called this office 5x and once twice it gave me a busy signal, and the other 3x, it just rang for a few minutes without any answer. Ridiculous! Update: I finally received all my packages on 4/22/14, 3 days after it stated that it was already delivered! And to top it off, the USPS customer service never emailed me back about my inquiry when it clearly states that it would be in contact with me within 24 hours of initial inquiry. read more

But if all I'm trying to do is see whether they are holding a package for me (assuming I never found a delivery notification slip on my door or placed with the letters), I'd prefer to do business with them over the phone. Unfortunately it's not possible to speak to them on the phone. Their phone number is answered by a a recording that recites their location and business hours and then hangs up. They told me my package was in Southern California and when I went to the post office near me they then said the package is in San Mateo. My girlfriend and I got the item re shipped down here and now it says it's being delivered in San Mateo. Ok so I know we've all had bad experiences at the post office, but this one took me back. I was expecting a package and needed it before I went out of town. The shipper put the wrong street # and I knew it would not make it to me. My husband went to the Delaware office and spoke with a supervisor. (darn it I forgot her name) I was home in the afternoon and my doorbell rang, she said I am ? from the Delaware post office "I went and tracked down the carrier and here is your package"! It was a rainy day I was shocked.. that was over and beyond what I would have ever expected. I was really impressed and grateful to have what I needed before going out of town.
