The US Postal Service is an independent agency within the Executive Branch of the US government, but it is not a traditional federal agency that was established by Congress in 1970. Its funding is from. postage sales, not taxes. It provides mail collection and delivery to every address, sells stamps and supplies, government services such as passport application processing and handling election mail, Informed Delivery (that e-mails of scanned envelopes that let individuals know before their mail arrives). Serving the HI Kai community of about 30,000+ residents since the 1960's when the community was built, the HI Kai US Post Office is a standard retail post office that serves the zip code 96825. In addition to the services provided above, it also offers P.O. Box services, a self-service kiosk available 24/7, money orders, and sale of greeting cards. As I have used this post office since the 1980's, I have gotten to know the staff behind the front desk serving the public, such as when I had to buy stamps, mail parcels, or had any questions about mail service. Familiar faces always brought smiles to both sides, and staff went out of their way to provide the detailed answers, as they worked as a team; it was like family. However, they have all since retired and now, new staff are in place, and the customer service is very different. The new staff lack the in-depth experience in providing detailed knowledgeable answers and are regimented in their work. For example: * I was looking for a specific postage stamp design, and one employee said she had none and said she could not check with other staff; whereas, prior staff would have easily checked with others to see if they had that specific stamp. I ended up going to the main post office near the airport to get that stamp. * In sending parcels, sometimes there are differences in mailing costs even if info is obtained online, so however we bring the parcel for flat rate or priority rate, the current staff will take it as how we prepared it; whereas prior staff would suggest to us any savings by sending it a certain way. The post office interior is somewhat small but stretched out in one line so that you can line up to obtain services with the first available staff. During busy times, such as the Christmas rush, the line extends beyond the entrance and the wait is longer, which is understandable. I love that this post office sells greeting cards; however, they are lined up against the wall, but I wish they were moved into a corner or placed on revolving card displays, as customers lined up for their turn at the front desk can easily look over your shoulder to see what cards you've picked up. As for our outgoing mail, we do not use our home mail box for the carrier to pick up due to possible theft, and we also do not use the mail collection box just outside of the post office, for that same reason. Instead, we are thankful that we can go into the post office 24/7 and drop off our mail via slots just near the inside 2nd doors to the service desk. Likewise, in that same area, flat rate and priority boxes/envelopes are stacked up, and the self-service kiosk and the P.O. boxes are accessible 24/7. Hours of operation are Mon to Fri 9a to 4:30p, Sat 9a to 12n, and Sun closed. Located on HI Kai Dr near the HI Kai Shopping Center, it has ample free parking fronting the main entrance and on the left side of the building. We will continue to use the HI Kai Post Office for our needed services due to convenience that is close to our home and are thankful for that. We are hopeful that over time, staff will gain the knowledge and that we will get to know them on a more personal level as compared to the prior staff. read more

My parents and I came to this location about 10:30 am. There were no lines and the staff seemeed to be patient with the customers in front of us. Customer service is no easy task, but they did it flawlessly. I think not a lot of people are aware of this hidden gem. It's tucked inside Hawaii Kai and it's relatively close to Hawaii Kai Towne Center. They have everything you'll need - stamps, flat rate boxes, cards, passport services, and PO Boxes. I showed my mom how to use the USPS website so she could avoid lines in the future. I would suggest others the same! read more

This is, by far, the worst post office I've ever dealt with. I had ordered a colored pencil portrait of me & my late father, and the painter mailed it in a stiff cardboard envelope with a stamp on it that clearly said, "do not bend". And what does the mail carrier do? He literally bent the envelope in half and shoved it in my mailbox. He could've placed it in front of my door, but I guess that would've required extra steps. When I took it to this post office to report what happened, the supervisor said that they usually tell people not to place items like that in envelopes that can bend. Well clearly this envelope was not meant to bend, but the carrier decided to force bend it anyway. Then he tried to place blame on the fact that it could've been damaged prior to arriving to their post office. Whether that happened or not does not take away from the fact that the carrier BENT the portrait and shoved it into my mailbox. The supervisor said he can talk to the mail carrier about it, but he didn't even take down my name or address, so how would he know which mail carrier it was? Been to several post office around Oahu, and this is definitely my favorite one. I like how's it's secretly located within Hawaii Kai near Wailua St. and Hawaii Kai Drive before Anchorage. It's like the Aiea Post Office that makes you think, "there's a post office here!?" There is a lot of parking, especially when you turn left into the bigger lot. This location is well-staffed with friendly, quick, and professional employees. It's rarely busy, but it's crazy during the holidays that even finding a parking spot is difficult. Another thing I like about this post office is it's very, very cool and comfortable AC! It's also very clean and organized and spacious as well. They also do passport applications and passport photos. You need to make an appointment. When I did my passport application many years ago, I didn't know you had to do that, but the nice employee still assisted me. A great staff here. This is the best post office ever, Hawaii Kai branch is my favorite location!! I frequent this location often, due to work, when having to do certified mail. Also when I have my personal items I have to send out I would stop by after work. If I have to send anything I actually wait until the week day so I can stop here after work, I rather go to this location. The reason why this is the best and my favorite location, during all my visits to the post office, I don't have to wait more than 5 mins in line ( except during Holidays) The workers are so knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and quick when they handle your transaction. If you come unprepared like I do, there is a section on your left when you enter. This is where you will find the flat rate boxes of all sizes and flat rate envelopes. I usually grab the box size I need and pack my items. Note. if you forget shipping supplies, few items are available for purchase. Greeting cards are also available for purchase, so convenient! Today I forgot my shipping envelope and wasn't planning to use the flat rate box since it was light so I purchased one to ship my items, this saved me an extra trip back to the post office. The medium size envelope cost me 1.59. I love the flat rate boxes and always make use of the box, when I send them to my daughter, uncle, sister, family, and friends. The flat rate boxes comes in different shape and size, all for one price no matter what the weight is, and as long as they all fit in the box. A few times, my boxes didn't pass, because I tend to over-fill the flat rate boxes and I have to take some items out or have to change the box to make them all fit nicely. Its so hard when, when you want to send your love ones tons of stuff from Hawaii. During the holiday season, the most busiest time of the year. When I have to ship my flat rate boxes, this is the only time that I wait longer than 5 mins, but the lines really move quick. Today's visit, I am all caught up, even got my Chinese New Year Stamps. So....normally I just write food reviews.....but.... THIS IS THE BEST POST OFFICE EVER!!! As this year has been an interesting mix of events....I felt it was time to 'go postal' and write this review. I haven't posted in a while...and this is my Christmas Eve present to you all.....not that learning about your local post office was on your agenda.....but.... Sometimes Post Offices can be linked to negative thoughts or jokes. I used to be one of those people, until I started going to the Hawaii Kai branch. I have always had consistently excellent service here....and I look forward to my trips here. Even if I am in a semi-poor mood.... the smiles and helpful people behind the counter make me feel better by the time I leave. I am not a regular and they don't know my name, but they still greet me with a smile and same amount of pure aloha. This can be a pretty busy hub...especially during the holidays. This factor alone would put anyone in a foul mood but the employees here are amazing.... -always smiling -always helpful -go out of their way to treat you like family (the ones you like, I mean) -efficient -clear and provide helpful information Usually the p.o. box area is open early and late, and the cool part is there are shipping boxes available. So if you need a box and you have forgotten (like every week), they will always be there waiting for you, no matter if you are waking up or getting home. Santa is flying over and delivering presents tonight and I know this branch will receive all their gifts...because they are definitely on the NICE LIST.....unless they sent flat rate....and then they will receive them in 3 days.... read more

Soooo, here's a semi-secret of mine. I have a 2nd part-time job selling stuff on Amazon! With this being said, I must rely on the Post Office to get my packages where they need to go! The Hawaii Kai Post Office is actually one post office I don't mind going to. Very convenient to get to from my house and ample parking available! The workers here are actually friendly and smile! BIG PLUS. I say this because I have a totally different experience when I mail stuff at another post office in town. Some of these federal workers really look miserable. Okay, maybe its not the most glamorous job in the world but get a grip! At least they have a job! Yes, avoiding a line at a post office is almost inevitable, but I can confidently guarantee it wont be as painful here. I have visited this postal location twice in the past month. My initial visit was busy due to it being right before Christmas! But I believe it was my second time there where I wanted to verify any issues before just dropping my labeled pre-paid pkg into their drop-off because I purchased postage via eBay and so It can always be questionable so to say. Previous to me being next in line I had scrolled thru YELP to read reviews out of pure boredom come to find more than 6 posts relating to a worker-female, that had irritated quite a few customers in that customer Svc window. I don't think much of those reviews unless au happen to encounter a similar experience which I found myself directly in after standing before a woman that checked the boxes of YELP review descriptions. She almost had me pay full price disregard to the discount post I had already paid. She only offered to check if something could be done AFTER I asked politely. One of the workers came to me personally and took the time to show me how to use the postage meter machine so that I did not have to wait in line. All of the tellers that I have encountered at the Hawaii Kai location have provided me with excellent service whenever I needed to mail a package. Ignorant Woman Clerk: 1 star Every other Clerk & delivery people: 5 stars I just want to express the way I feel about one particular arrogant woman clerk @ Hawaii Kai Post Office, because everyone else is wonderful. I tried to mail a package to UK, so I off course researched on USPS web site before I headed to the Post Office @ Hawaii Kai. According to the USPS.com, I can send it First class International, Certified mail with a Confirmation number. I went to the Post Office @ Hawaii Kai, there was only one women clerk at the counter. She said that I couldn't send it to UK that was traceable. And there was nothing she could do. She was extremely arrogant. I defended myself by saying "That's not true, I CAN send it as traceable, it says so on your website." But she kept insisting that the information on USPS.com was incorrect. I got tired of arguing with this ignorant clerk, so I left, and I actually went to another Post Office @ Aina Haina shopping center and tried to mail it. A nice knowledgeable woman clerk with blond hair told me " No problem!" and I could finally mail it to UK as traceable without any problem. The horrible woman clerk at Hawaii Kai Post Office was; Estimate age over 50, tall and slim, long dark hair with pony tail, with extremely dry skin. I'm furious with her telling me a lie. This morning, I was excited to go to the post office to pick up my long awaited packgage. The post office was closed, but customers can pick up the packages from 6AM on ... I rang the door bell and I waited. I could hear people talking, laughing and working. Few minutes passed by, I pressed the bell again. Still no reponse, I could still hear laughing, talking and carts being move around. Then few minutes passes by, I rang the bell again!!! I have to admit, I was very annoyed that I had to ring the bells three times and waited 5 minutes before anyone came to the door! Finally this female carrier open the door, I handed her the notice. She took the paper checked my ID. When she came back with my 8 pound box, she tossed it at me and close the door! How rude!! Not even a thank you!! The workers here are the nicest people ever. After a long day of work, I thought I would make sure that I sent my best friend's birthday present so that I would not forget. I printed a postage at the automatic kiosk, dropped the box in the package slot, and then I went home feeling like I was very productive. When I got home, I looked at the receipt and realized that I had accidentally put my best friend's old address on the package. I couldn't believe that I did that, and I immediately felt disappointed that his package would not be going to a stranger. I panicked. In a last ditch attempt, I wrote a letter explaining the situation to the post office, which was closed, and I slid my letter under the door. I did not expect a response, but at 8:00 am in the morning, my phone rang, and it was the post office. They told me that they looked for and found my package and that I could come pick it up. I swear if I was on the mainland, this would have never happened. I am so grateful that my neighborhood is serviced by a post office with such nice and caring workers! Thank you! read more

Best post office on the island. I mail A LOT of packages using click n ship so I don't stand in line as often anymore. Great hours 9-4:30, and latest collection time 5pm. Even open Saturdays until noon. Saturday collection time is 4pm. Lots of parking. Friendly staff. APC machine to mail packages if you choose to weigh and buy the postage at the machine rather than stand in line. This location scans and moves my packages right away. A couple of times I have dropped off my packages to the Kailua location before cut off time and they didn't move it until the next day, as told by the scans. read more

I had to pick up a package early Friday morning. I rang the bell at 559 a.m.,! They open at 6 a.m. And the lady- talll / manly looking / pulled back hair open the window and grunts and says, " we open at 6, I didn't even clock in yet and I'm already working". I was like sorry..... and she just repeated herself "great, I am working and haven't even clocked in yet". She gets my box and slams it down. I say thank you ... and she just slams the window. I was like , wth. I had another box to pick up this morning - Saturday. I decide to go later to make sure I don't get there too early. It was 710 a.m. I rang the window bell... and just my luck , same lady. No smile , no hi , grabs the paper., slams the box and shuts the window hard. I'm like , what did I ever do to this miserable lady?! I don't yelp much, but this lady needs to have a better attitude. If she doesn't like her job so much , then she should quit. Don't take your problems out on me. Two days in a row .... same lady, same horrible attitude. I didn't deserve that c--- from her. Hawaii Kai's post office is pretty good on certain days when you get friendly workers and not the mean bunch. I think all the post offices have their workers who are nice and rude. Anyways its easy to find, they have a small parking lot but you can always find a spot. They have post office boxes you can rent from small to business boxes. Very clean and they have a lot of shipping boxes to choose from. read more

The workers are not nice to everyone, only the ones they like or can't bother. If you have a lot to mail, they won't help you out and let you know the cheaper way to mail it. They also won't put "Large Flat Rate GAMING" boxes out, because they know that you can ship more for your money like that, but you can order them online. If you get on their bad side, like this post, they'll tell you they can't mail your package if there are "creases" on the box. No joke! 3rd time now, same worker!
