First time here and it won't be my last! It only had two things here on my quick in and out visit, but it was enough to make me go "Please sir, may I have another!" after every bite! I got the strawberry danish croissant thing and OMG...it was what my dreams about strawberries and croissants in the forms of danishes are now made of! I also got a dark chocolate brownie cookie (I wish I could remember the names, but I was in such a rush I just grabbed what looked good) that was sexual chocolate! It was soooooooo good and I had it later that night with a ruby port and it was beyond unbelievable! It may take some nudging not to keep going back and just getting these two things, but if this was just a taste of what else they have to offer, my tastebuds will demand I explore my other options! read more

I had such high hopes for Upper Crust. I asked my friends for a dessert place, and this one couldn't be recommended enough. In the end, though, I was kind of disappointed by my experience here. I swung by here with friends in the afternoon (~3:30pm), and a lot of their baked goods were sold out - bummer. I ordered an Italian cream cupcake, and it was probably more akin to an Italian cream muffin. The cake was so, SO dense, and the frosting felt and tasted like...fat. I imagine that if the cupcake had come to room temperature, it would have been a lot better, but Upper Crust keeps everything on shelves that are, if I'm not mistaken, refrigerated. I was bound to lose, unfortunately. I've heard great things about their brunch here, so I might wind up coming back to check that out. Upper Crust (UC) is located on a sunny corner in the wonderful city of Austin. The bakery is filled with happy families eating delicious bread for breakfast with big smiles. UC isn't fancy. The decor is very homey and the bread humbly displayed in cases with no extra adornment. Between Ray M. and I, we got the cream puff, an apple turnover, and a blueberry danish. My favorite among the three was the apple turnover. Absolutely flakey dough with tangy, sweet apple filling. Every bite was refreshing and heavenly! An excellent compliment to a cup of coffee and a sunny morning. The cream puff was one a kind. I've never had a cream puff that I liked because the cream was always tasteless and the puff was always cold and stale. The cream puff at UC is AMAZING. Although the puff is cold, the crust remains chewy and fresh. The cream itself actually has viscosity and explodes from the puff in lushes waves. There were specks of vanilla bean all throughout the cream which emphasized the quality of the puff. If you've never had a good cream puff, I highly recommend UC's. Although the blueberry danish was my least favorite; it wasn't terrible. Personally, I prefer my bread to be on the chewier side. The danish wasn't as chewy as I had hoped. It didn't amaze me but I wasn't too bothered by this. If you're coming on a Sunday morning, I recommend coming early. I got to UC at 10 and a great majority of the breads ( mostly croissants) were already gone. Definitely give UC a try! read more

I found this bakery thanks to Yelp and it was worth the drive from downtown. I got the mocha almond cake and the Italian cream! I cannot decide which was better. The staff member that helped me so kind and I really enjoyed the whole experience. I ate the cakes over two days trying to savor them because, I knew I wouldn't have time to return before I left, plus they are closed Sunday. 2 words: REVEAL PARTY!!! I shopped around and Upper Crust Bakery had the best prices for cupcakes. I called them and the manager was super laid back and said all they would need is 24 hour notice. I let them know that I wasn't doing a traditional "Reveal Party" ie: pink and blue and they were totally cool with it! I met with them right after my dr. apt. and gave them the sealed results. I had 40 cupcakes done. 1/2 in chocolate and 1/2 carrot cake. The fillings were going to be designated as the following: Red= Girl Oragne= Boy I went to Indiana University and my husband is a Longhorn. Plus, it was fall colors and I despise baby pink and baby blue. A friend picked up the cupcakes and they looked amazing! I was afraid that somehow I would see some of the mystery filling, but nope! The manager that checked me out was super friendly and teased me that he knew what we were having! It was so exciting! When it finally came time to bite into the cupcakes, my husband and I both took a bite at the same time. I didn't bite enough into the cupcake to get to the filling, but my husband let out a yelp and had the biggest smile on his face. I will never forget that look! He was grinning ear to ear and proudly announced he was having a son! I had the red velvet cupcake, it was so moist and words can not describe the cream cheese frosting. This is just the cute little neighborhood cafe/bakery that I've been looking for in Austin. While it might not be conveniently located in my particular neighborhood, I'm definitely not going to let that get in my way of indulging in a little lunchtime goodness at the Upper Crust Bakery. First off, I've heard good things about their catered products -- breakfast pastries, boxed lunches, etc. So, I was really looking forward to the real deal when I made my inaugural visit to the UCB. Here's what I had: 1/2 Chicken Salad Sandwich with tortilla chips and salsa plus a lovely cupcake for dessert. Total bill was really cheap -- Less than $5. The salsa was a bit off for my tastes, but that was really the only "downside"... if you want to call it that. I enjoyed the general hodge-podge of a crowd the UCB drew during the lunch hour. You had your retirees reading the paper, the stay-at-home mom (or off-for-a-couple-days-from-work mom) corralling two semi-crazy kids into coloring in coloring books while she finished her lunch, the young professionals on break from the medical buildings, and studious collegiate fumbling around on his iBook while meandering over a half eaten cinnamon roll. The staff was prompt and service was courteous. No tables were left uncleaned for very long due in part to the cleanliness of the staff. Food was quickly shuttled over to my table after I paid and sat down. I appreciate the Upper Crust for filling what was otherwise a void in my life and I look forward to the time we meet again... which is probably tomorrow. read more

I have driven by UCB for about a year or so because it's on the way to Dancers Shape. I never had the chance to stop by until today. I decided to drop by to pick up lunch and a pastry or two. The inside looks like your typical cafe / bakery - similar to La Madeleine or Texas French Bread. There are lots of tables filled with people during lunch hours. I ordered a half chicken salad sandwich on wheat and a cinnamon almond croissant. The chicken salad is DELICIOUS - almonds, grapes, celery. I'm definitely getting a whole sandwich next time. The croissant was humungous! I could only finish half and probably saving the other half for breakfast :) They also serve coffee, soups, cakes, cookies, and other pastries. I think they also sell loaves. I'm coming back to try more! Only thing they could improve on is getting wifi for their customers. I live near and drive past some of Austin's best bakeries to go to Upper Crust, and always have. Their lemon(!) blueberry muffins are the best blueberry muffins in Austin or anywhere. (My baking goal is to make one as good as theirs.) I fortunately, also, get to eat their cakes throughout the year -- no one in our family could imagine having a birthday without one. Half of the family gets the Gateau Marisa with strawberries, a fancy but uncomplicated cake. The other half gets Grandma's Chocolate, which is exactly that: a perfect, moist chocolate cake with chocolate frosting made only more perfect with vanilla ice cream. Not sure what the point of being open as long as they are if they run out so quickly. It's a crap shoot whether or not they have pastries to even sell you. Either they need to make more pastries or close earlier. I drove halfway across town to find that after barely being opening they not only ran out most of their pastries but weren't going to make more except cinnamon rolls which were going to take 30 min or so. Extremely frustrating. My choice is now either call ahead to make certain a pastry shop actually has pastries to sell or choose another place. I think I'll choose another place. read more

I made my first visit to the Upper Crust this weekend and tried their turkey croissant, creampuff, chocolate eclair, and cinnamon roll. This was at around 11am, so these had been sitting in the case awhile; I've been told there are usually hordes of people earlier in the day getting the fresh baked stuff. Nevertheless, I found all the items delectable. My favorite was the turkey croissant - not just because it was the only one with meat in it, but because the croissant was very well done, light, flakey (but not really) and buttery. The creampuff was good, but I thought it had too much cream. The cream itself was very tasty, not too sweet at all. The chocolate eclair was coated with a really thick layer of delicious chocolate. The cinnamon roll was also tasty and not too sweet. The store itself is nice when it's not crowded; there's parking in front and a nice number of tables to sit at. read more

For me, Upper Crust is all about the cinnamon rolls. If you're looking for a cream cheesy Cinnabon type thing, this is not the place to go. There is no cream cheese. There is no frosting. Haters just hate based on those things. What you do get is layers and layers of delicious pastry. It starts off crunchy, with crystals of cinnamon sugar. Peel it down, layer by layer. As you go deeper, it get softer and gooier until you are left with the sweet, soft, delicious core, which you must gobble down. Then, be sad that it's all gone. When I've ordered espresso based drinks, they were kinda cold/tepid, so I stopped doing it and just get a water. Upper Crust Bakery is simply the best bakery I have ever had the pleasure to visit! The cream puffs & chocolate éclairs' thin delicate shells ooze vanilla bean flecked cream goodness. The cinnamon rolls are incredible too and I've never had a slice of their cake I didn't like either. BTW by early afternoon the cream puffs & éclairs may be gone. We have also had lunch there several times and I love the avocado sandwich on (delicious) seeded rye. So a bit of a backstory! I'm in a long distance relationship, I'm in Indiana and I couldn't spend Valentine's Day with my boyfriend. So I spent all week researching good bakeries in his area so that he could have something nice and this one had such amazing reviews!! so I doordashed him the cake and asked the bakery if they could add something special on the cake I was delivering him and they did just that & BEYOND!! I have been converted. For the first time in my life, I enjoyed a cheesecake. Specifically, a beautiful chocolate cheesecake from Upper Crust. Here's how it happened -- I was put in charge of buying a birthday dessert for a friend's 30th. Our group of friends took a poll of the kind of cake we'd buy, and my beloved Italian cream cake was defeated 3-2 by the dreaded cheesecake. I did a little googling, and it was suggested that Upper Crust had the best cheesecake in town. I figured that if I had to venture into enemy territory, I might as well buy the finest. Ordering was a little strange. I called Upper Crust, was put on hold for a long time, 2 different people tried to talk to me about ordering, and then the employee didn't know if I could request writing on a cheesecake. But it all got straightened out, and I went to the bakery the next day to pick it up. Except I almost had a heart attack when the person working the front desk couldn't find my cheesecake. After a few minutes of searching, the cake was found, replete with the requested birthday message. Overall, everyone seemed very nice, if a little scattered. As for the taste -- omgomgomgnomnom. The crust in particular was amazing. The cake wasn't filled with crazy toppings or exotic flavors, but it just seemed fresh, simple, and appropriately decadent. It's a large, buttery, flakey croissant, halved and filled with fresh tomato slices, 5+ slabs of thick sliced bacon, layered rounds of boiled egg and a gooey melted slice of white cheese holding it all together. This place serves up consistent quality and presentation with this dish. Sit at one of the sturdy wooden tables inside or outside on the covered, dog friendly patio with ceiling fans, that looks out on burnet rd and 45th. People frequently bicycle here and lock up at the convenient bike rack. You queue up at the counter, pay at the counter and if they prepare any of your selections, wait around the registers until its brought out. There's usually a line, but the staff will still guide you through the selections if you have questions. Its got a comfortable neighborhood favorite type vibe. read more

If I could only eat one dessert for the rest of my life, it would be this. It is so simple-- no raisins, no nuts, no pineapple, no nonsense, and not a single thing to improve upon. Even if I get the very last piece that has surely been sitting in Flightpath's case for a few days, it is still a moist slice of heaven. As my step-dad said when he tried it: "It's like eating the wings off a baby angel." (Which, he says, is a good thing.) A friend and I ate two sandwiches, a cup of soup, coffee, and a cinnamon roll for $10. Upper Crust is most famous for its pastries and cakes, but anything at this bake shop is fresh and filling. They have so much vanilla Bean pastry cream inside of them that it oozes out with the first bite. I want my last meal to include this delicious cream puff, it might just revive me.
