XLB, popcorn chicken, beef noodle soup
    Alyssa W.

Have to say the dishes here are pretty expensive and I would come back more often if the prices were even a little lower. With that said, think the beef noodle soup $25 is worth getting - the beef melts in your mouth and noodles have a great texture. For the soup dumplings, $3.50/piece ($16.50/5 pieces) is extremely expensive - even more expensive than Din Tai Fung. At that price point I really expect amazing flavor and texture - it's decent flavor and great texture. Unfortunately Unmei is takeout only and that might be why most of the XLB exploded immediately when picked up delicately with chopsticks, might be sticking to box where there are holes in the steamed paper). We also tried the red bean bunnies $7 which were ok - lots of red bean paste, texture gets hard to chew after it cools a bit, and not reheated all the way. On the bright side, there are tables and chairs on a closed off adjacent street (31st Ave) to enjoy the meal immediately on a nice day. Not totally sure if 31st Ave is always closed off though or if it's just for 31st Ave Open Street weekends.

This tiny hole in the wall Taiwanese Dumpling House recently opened in the space formerly occupied by Foodstruck. This space is not much bigger than a food truck and I think their menu is still being finalized. There was a handwritten menu on the board above the counter which differed slightly from the one that they posted on their IG page. I went after work yesterday and ordered: Fried Chicken Gua Bao ($9.75): came two per order. This was my favorite item from my order. The chicken was perfectly fried, the white bao bun was pillowy soft, and the sweet plum sauce went perfectly with the fried chicken. Popcorn Chicken ($11.50): not bad but I've had better versions of this. Some pieces of popcorn chicken were dry but overall tasty and a good snack. Pork Wontons ($12): came with 8 pieces of pork wontons. You can choose to have the wontons in soup or house made spicy chili sauce. I got mine with the chili sauce. The bite size pieces of wontons had pork fillings and were coated in spicy sauce. It was tender and savory. The heat level wasn't overwhelming, which I appreciated. They are still in their soft opening stage (until March 2nd) and are working out some kinks. I feel like some items are priced kind of high. The Braised Beef Noodle Soup wasn't available the night I went but I saw it was listed at $24.50 which seems kind of high imo. Also, most of the items are made to order so expect a bit of a wait. Some people who came before me were still waiting for their order by the time I got mine. The staff were very sweet and apologetic. I'm curious to try other items on the menu so I'll be definitely be back. I'm always glad to see more food options here in Astoria.

    Vegan XLB

Good authentic Taiwanese spot in Astoria, one of a kind in the area for classic dishes. Robust vegan and vegetarian options for such a small menu. Flavor was good, though sauce on the wontons was a bit much and not well-suited for to go. But can ask for sauce on the side if a concern. The vegan XLB (soup dumplings) aren't really soupy, just dumplings. The Taiwanese scallion pancake was fantastic, although again would be better suited for takeout without wet garnish and sauce. Bao was ok, good bao in the area but tofu is more rare. Service always friendly and kind. Be clear when making any special requests, and confirm before finalizing. Overall it was good, with a high price point but appreciate how unique it is for the immediate area, so understandable.

Brand new spot, quick service there's only one high top table here for now so more for to go or walking snack. I got fried tofu. Very tasty everything is handmade. Very crunchy. Their house made chili sauce is delicious too

Can't say I am a fan of this place; there were language problems taking my order, and I found their dumplings to be on the spicy side. Still they were worth a try, but I will not be back

Great Spot! Love the homemade dumplings and friendly staff. Dumplings can be a little spicy, but still so good.

He turned around to look at me and did not say a word. So I patiently waited in front of the truck. A couple came by after me and waited. The man finally came to the window with packages of food so I thought he was ready to take my order at the same time. But he waved at the couple behind me and told me before I could even speak, and in a rude tone "you have to wait , there are too many orders" and proceeded to give the food to the couple . I was annoyed because I had no idea the couple behind me had preordered food and I did not intend to cut any "line". Anyways, he then looked at me so I told me I would like the scallion chicken over rice. He just said no more and that ended the convo. I left and gave my business elsewhere. The menu was very limited and the food ran out during prime lunch hour. Needless to say, I won't return.

Service was good, and pretty quick. One of their specialty dishes that I've heard so much about is their BDSM chicken: their Brinded, De-boned, and Soy-Milk battered yellow fat chicken. As they only have limited quantity each day, I was surprised that they had it when I came in at 6:30p on a Monday. I paired it with their cucumber salad and some rice, and it was great! The chicken was crispy yet still juicy and the seasoning was delicious. Loved the sauteed greens and beansprouts that they added to the dish, and I thought that it was very well-rounded. Would love to come back to try some of their other popular dishes, such as their popcorn chicken, beef noodle soup, or tangyuan.

Popcorn chicken and spicy dumplings were regular, nothing to make it outstanding, but still delicious. The place is like a lunchroom. Not sure if we were just supposed to go take our own seats. There was no one to greet us as the ordering station is all the way in the back and all the staff were just hanging out around there. Service was odd, the server did not come check on us and when we needed something we just went to the ordering station. Please note, when we went it was pretty much empty, so it was not busy at all. As mentioned not sure how it supposed to work here, but we did get our food fairly quick. The place is cute, lots of plants, looks like a very big space, believe it used to be a garage. Overall food was filling, able to share if needed, give it a try. Its definitely a nice addition to LIC.

I opted for their beef noodle soup which I read was a big hit. It was provided in a strange container - you have to remove the top "bento" section to reveal the beef soup below, and carefully put the noods and veg in. Overall, great soup and the noods had a nice bite. Always a fan of pickled mustard greens. The beef had a bit of a chew and there weren't too many pieces of it, but the deep rich beefy flavor of the broth kind of makes up for it. On more than one visit, the beef contained large amounts of sinew and cartilage that were not properly rendered. This isn't just a texture preference -- it's connective tissue that would normally break down if the meat were braised long enough. I've attached a photo showing what was served. The first time this happened, I mentioned it to the staff, and they agreed the meat quality was poor and told me management had instructed them to serve it anyway. The next couple of visits were much better, so I assumed the issue had been addressed. However, on my most recent visit, the same problem returned. When I raised it again, the woman at the front told me that this was "edible for all of us in the back" and suggested it was a personal issue rather than a preparation or quality problem. I'm not expecting premium cuts, but when a dish relies on long-braised beef, excessive cartilage and sinew shouldn't be the norm -- especially when staff themselves have acknowledged the issue in the past. Consistency and how feedback is handled really matter, and unfortunately this experience left me hesitant to order the dish again.
