XLB, popcorn chicken, beef noodle soup
    Alyssa W.

Have to say the dishes here are pretty expensive and I would come back more often if the prices were even a little lower. With that said, think the beef noodle soup $25 is worth getting - the beef melts in your mouth and noodles have a great texture. For the soup dumplings, $3.50/piece ($16.50/5 pieces) is extremely expensive - even more expensive than Din Tai Fung. At that price point I really expect amazing flavor and texture - it's decent flavor and great texture. Unfortunately Unmei is takeout only and that might be why most of the XLB exploded immediately when picked up delicately with chopsticks, might be sticking to box where there are holes in the steamed paper). We also tried the red bean bunnies $7 which were ok - lots of red bean paste, texture gets hard to chew after it cools a bit, and not reheated all the way. On the bright side, there are tables and chairs on a closed off adjacent street (31st Ave) to enjoy the meal immediately on a nice day. Not totally sure if 31st Ave is always closed off though or if it's just for 31st Ave Open Street weekends.

This tiny hole in the wall Taiwanese Dumpling House recently opened in the space formerly occupied by Foodstruck. This space is not much bigger than a food truck and I think their menu is still being finalized. There was a handwritten menu on the board above the counter which differed slightly from the one that they posted on their IG page. I went after work yesterday and ordered: Fried Chicken Gua Bao ($9.75): came two per order. This was my favorite item from my order. The chicken was perfectly fried, the white bao bun was pillowy soft, and the sweet plum sauce went perfectly with the fried chicken. Popcorn Chicken ($11.50): not bad but I've had better versions of this. Some pieces of popcorn chicken were dry but overall tasty and a good snack. Pork Wontons ($12): came with 8 pieces of pork wontons. You can choose to have the wontons in soup or house made spicy chili sauce. I got mine with the chili sauce. The bite size pieces of wontons had pork fillings and were coated in spicy sauce. It was tender and savory. The heat level wasn't overwhelming, which I appreciated. They are still in their soft opening stage (until March 2nd) and are working out some kinks. I feel like some items are priced kind of high. The Braised Beef Noodle Soup wasn't available the night I went but I saw it was listed at $24.50 which seems kind of high imo. Also, most of the items are made to order so expect a bit of a wait. Some people who came before me were still waiting for their order by the time I got mine. The staff were very sweet and apologetic. I'm curious to try other items on the menu so I'll be definitely be back. I'm always glad to see more food options here in Astoria.

    Vegan XLB

Good authentic Taiwanese spot in Astoria, one of a kind in the area for classic dishes. Robust vegan and vegetarian options for such a small menu. Flavor was good, though sauce on the wontons was a bit much and not well-suited for to go. But can ask for sauce on the side if a concern. The vegan XLB (soup dumplings) aren't really soupy, just dumplings. The Taiwanese scallion pancake was fantastic, although again would be better suited for takeout without wet garnish and sauce. Bao was ok, good bao in the area but tofu is more rare. Service always friendly and kind. Be clear when making any special requests, and confirm before finalizing. Overall it was good, with a high price point but appreciate how unique it is for the immediate area, so understandable.

Brand new spot, quick service there's only one high top table here for now so more for to go or walking snack. I got fried tofu. Very tasty everything is handmade. Very crunchy. Their house made chili sauce is delicious too

Can't say I am a fan of this place; there were language problems taking my order, and I found their dumplings to be on the spicy side. Still they were worth a try, but I will not be back

Great Spot! Love the homemade dumplings and friendly staff. Dumplings can be a little spicy, but still so good.

The beef oil noodles gave big chicken plate vibes (iykyk) but with beef Mushroom salad was a little different than the regular woodear salad - delish!! The main star of the show imo was the fried tangyuan - delicious creamy ice cream with a crispy mochi-y sesame ball of goodness!! Cant wait to come back and try their other items! Great cocktail list, great service, great vibes, smaller spot but has one bigger table to accommodate a bigger party! Also, didn't know but it's by the same team behind 888 in st marks!

Faves at our dinner table were the cold sesame noodles, wontons, and pork jowl. IMO you don't need the fried rice so just get the jowl as an app, not a protein add-on. I wished the BDSM chicken had more dark meat, but it was also really well fried and flavored. My husband and I also both wished the fried tofu app fully went stinky tofu, but I get why that's not on the menu here. Pork hock croquette was just ok and the huadiao egg tofu could've been better served over rice vs with wonton chips. Pea shoots were solid but it's hard to mess that up. Husband wished the wontons were in more of a chili oil than the sesame sauce but the wontons themselves were really delicious. Want to try 886 next time!

BTW, their bakery is catercorner from the restaurant and absolutely worth a visit. Inside, the decor is simple-not Spartan-comfortable and functional. The tables are spaced nicely to provide privacy for each group. The evening that we were there, the sound level was comfortable. We could easily have a conversation around the large table. Our main server Lizzy was great. She has an amazing energy and smile that is so inviting. You're already enjoying dinner before you even order. We were 6 people and so we could order a wide variety of dishes. Some of my favorites were the scallion pancakes, lobster rice rolls, clam and basil and marinated cucumbers. There are enough choices for a vegetarian, pescatarian, but not for a vegan. We walked out satisfied and really happy. And then walked across the street to the bakery!

But the food just wasn't great. I got the fried eggplant, pea shoots, big chicken bun. Everything was as pictured, the portions were good. But, in general, I would have loved if everything just had a bit more flavor? The only dish out of the three I really liked were the pea shoots but at the end of the day they're just peashoots stir-fried in oyster sauce, topped with fried garlic. The eggplant was very bland by itself on a layer of what I think is greek yogurt(?) topped generously with cashews and fried garlic. The chicken bun was also quite flavorless except I think the sauce had some weird flavor to it that tasted like the tofu in it had fermented to me? I actually couldn't even finish my burger and gave half of it to my roommate and she said it was good but that it was a bit too spicy for her? And there's nothing in the ingredients that should be spicy, so there was definitely some funk in that sauce. Which is a shame because if the chicken were a bit more seasoned and they stuck with a regular kewpie blend it could have been a pretty standard burger. Same with the eggplant, I ended up throwing some sugar and soy sauce and stir-frying it to a more classic chinese style and it ended up tasting immensely better especially with the creamy sauce on the bottom giving a contrasting but balancing taste. I can see what Win Son is trying to attempt with their flavors I suppose...but it's just not for me. I will admit I did order delivery, so take this review with a grain of salt. I also do usually try to go to a restaurant in person to give them a fair chance if I see that the food may have potentially been better but just been knocked down due to delivery times and containers. But seeing how the flavors just weren't there for Win Son, I wouldn't want to return even for that. Edit: Gave it an extra star because I assume the service and ambiance here must be amazing. But the food? 2/5

I hope this plan works out because Four Four South Village is forking amazing. More so, I want a Four Four South Village in my home town. I want a Four Four South Village in my home town right now! * * * Main Point: Four Four South Village is a Taiwanese noodle shop. They have dry noodles, but wet is totally what you want to do. They have one of the most amazing stocks I have ever had in a bowl of Asian noodles. I have never been a super-fussy-about-the-stock pho eater. But Four Four South Village convinced me there is a higher better way. For those who want to climb peaks looking for the ultimate stock at the temple at the top of the mountain, This is a noble calling and the rewards for pure-minded search will be great. Four Four South Village is a serious candidate to be the temple on the highest mountain. * * * Footnotes: 1) Tomatoes are a great thing to put in your soup. 2) Get tripe and tendon to put in your soup. Tendon is particularly amazing. The actual beef called beef is actually on the tough side. It is the only downside to this beautiful place. 3) Spice congregates at the bottom of the bowl. Be aware. You are minding your own business and then you take a spoonful drawn heavily from the bottom of the bowl. That will wake you up. A lot. 4) Side dishes rule here. Get more than just soup. They have an amazing pressed tofu buried in a mound of fresh cilantro. Usually I loathe, execrate, despise and abhor cilantro. I once wrote in another review that I have a court order out on cilantro. Cilantro has to stay at least 200 yards away from my house. Cilantro can only visit my children in the presence of a social worker. I will make an exception to the court order for the pressed tofu and cilantro at Four Four South Village. That dish was so good Cilantro and I may decide to go into couples counseling to see if we can make our relationship work. * * * All in all, Four Four South Village is absolutely amazing.
