Union Square Donuts was one of those places I've always wanted to try, but never got to since I lived over an hour away. Ever since I've started working in the Downtown Boston area, I frequently visit the location at the Market. Even though I was a little disappointed with this place at first, it has slowly started to grow on me! What I was put off by at first was the dense, chewy consistency of the donut. It's not quite a yeast donut, but definitely not a cake one either. However, though it's not my favorite, I've grown to really enjoy the chewiness of the dough. I've tried most of their classic donuts, and a lot of their seasonal flavors. They also are more filling than a regular yeast donut, so you can get away with spending less money and eating just this for breakfast LOL. They have seasonal, rotating flavors that are fun. My favorite flavors so far: Vanilla Bean and Pumpkin Spice. Some flavors have really fancy names (like Caramel Sea Salt Bourbon, Lemon Poppy), but I think those just taste like plain old vanilla. Also, in some donuts, you can distinctly taste the fried oil to the point where you can't even taste what's on the donut. Maybe I just got a bad batch those few times? Overall, I don't think they're the best donuts I've had (I think they're a bit hyped up to be honest), but they are definitely better than Dunkins, and always fulfill my donut cravings! read more

Located inside the public market, which is just below the municipal parking lot. It was not crowded at all and the guy at the counter was very nice I told me all about the different donuts they had that day. I was so tempted to get Vietnamese coffee and instead ordered the Mango Orange which would have been fine except it's tangy flavor was completely overpowered by my other selection the Raspberry Lime Ricky. Now for the lime Ricky that had a nice punch of sweet and tang. As for the donuts themselves they are very well made, great dough. Had to get the plain glazed for review purposes. They don't have a "plain" glazed donut, but rather a honey glaze. The donut is a good size with a dark golden color. Moist and substantial due to a good thick density. But it's soft and has some air. Pretty good balance of denser cake style and yeasty air pockets here. Dough has a clean taste with a subtle yeast complexity. I got little to no oily flavor, which I think was a plus for me. The honey glaze is an excellent take on a plain glaze. Nice sweet and floral note. After doing some research, I'm still not sure if this is a "cake style" donut or a "yeast style" donut, or a combination of both. Fresh donuts with good service! There's a nice simple display case so you see all the flavors at an easy glance. We went with the Vietnamese coffee, which was delicious. 5/5 - BEST DONUTS I'VE EVER HAD. I don't know if my words will do Union Square Donuts justice, but I will try. They have locations in Somerville and Brookline but because these were out of our way, I'm SO GLAD there's a stand in the Boston Public Market. We took Uber to the Market at 9am on a Wednesday and, as a testimony to how good their donuts are, they were already sold out of a few flavors including their Vietnamese Coffee and Orange Creamsicle. After much thought, we settled on an "original" Belgian Dark Chocolate ($3) and a "premium" Maple Bacon ($3.50). We took our prizes to a seating area in the front of the Market and delighted our taste buds. I'm drooling thinking back on how good these donuts were. First: the Belgian Dark Chocolate. Imagine rich, decadent dark chocolate generously lathered on top of a soft, slightly spongy donut. I'm not sure what Belgian dark chocolate they use, but it honestly reminded me of Godiva. I don't think I can eat a normal chocolate glazed donut the same way anymore. Second: the Maple Bacon. Mhmmm. Who doesn't love bacon?? If the Belgian Dark Chocolate is the dessert donut we greedily ate first, then the Maple Bacon is the ultimate breakfast donut. Maple syrup and bacon are staples of any breakfast and I'm so excited that they're together in the form of a donut. My only suggestion would be to cut the bacon pieces up into smaller pieces. Though the prices are high for a single donut, I have yet to find quality gourmet donuts in Dallas and desperately wish I took a box of Union Square back home with me. If I'm in Boston again, I'm without a doubt, going to Union Square Donuts, trying their other unique flavors: Vietnamese Coffee, Brown Butter Hazelnut Crunch, and Sea-Salted Bourbon Caramel, and re-visiting my favorites. Honestly, I have eaten so many donuts in this city that I can pretty confidently say these are the best. My gf and I went on a donut crawl the day the below pic was taken and this was our second stop after Blackbird and by far the best. The Vanilla Glazed donut we had here was virtually perfect: light, airy, perfect crumb, right amount of glaze. The Maple Bacon and Boston Cream were also good, although the filling in the Boston Cream was a bit bland. Definitely not my style but I can understand how others would enjoy them. The raspberry-filled was very delicious. The filling was a bit too sweet but it tasted yummy anyway. The vanilla bean was okay. Again, the texture threw me off and the glaze coating tasted very artificial to me. Still, I can see how others would enjoy this donut because my husband loved it. I often don't go to the gourmet donut shops and now I understand why. I'm more into the donut shops that sell donuts for $1 and that have been open for 50+ years. We got two boxes of these donuts for work, and they were great! I tried the chocolate and brown butter hazelnut crunch, and both were delicious! The donuts are almost like bread in thickness and consistency, rather than a light and fluffy donut. I liked that they weren't too sweet. Flavor-wise, they were good too. I'm a donut fanatic so I had to try a Union Sq donut while walking around Boston Public Market. I ordered a dark chocolate glazed donut. The donut was bitter(it's bittersweet chocolate, but the donut itself seemed to taste bitter too!). The dough was not good...bad taste and texture, somewhere between light and flakey and a dense cake. The stand is tiny in the little corner. They had a bunch of different types of donuts but I bought the maple bacon. The donut was pretty good, sweet and salty from the bacon.
