Nice place for a drink! They have at the back of thw bar few games to entertain yourself and the front very comfy sofas. Service is fast and on a Saturday 5pm the bar was full but not crowded. We were 6 adults and a 1.5yr old toddler and our kid was not a problem at all. Not sure about the kids policy. But at the entrance there is a sign that says no strollers (if you have those mini foldable is not a problem!) Came this past Friday night (4/14) with a few friends, the ambiance was great. The reason for the one star is due to the bartender. We all order drinks, 2 were sodas & tequila and I ordered a classic margarita. I asked for the margarita to be remade because it tasted like roses lime juice on ice. Apparently I must've hit a nerve with the bartender because he snatched the drink aggressively, didn't bother asking what was wrong with the drinkf and I received the same unprofessional nasty attitude with the remade drink. Well, how about - Cocktails, leather couches, beer cheese, live bands, cool music, craft beer, bar eats menu, and fireplaces. Union Hall is a 5000 square foot bar. They feature live music and comedy acts too. The place itself is huge with a chill vibe. Bands play on the lower level. The decor all around is very cool and looks unlike most any bar. Kind of like a hipster version of an eccentric library. Of course I had to check this place out when I was in the area recently. Of course I had to try out a cocktail called the "Bocce Ball" which was made with Maker's Mark. Ugh! A couples dream. This is a big place with all sorts of nooks and crannies for you to hide away in. The library walls adds a great touch. If you find a seat on a Saturday night, consider yourself lucky. It's so much fun to sit back in a comfortable chair and watch people pass. (Is that strange, no, I don't know?) The bartenders held it together pretty well on a crazy night. My friends drink was weak and after a comment to her, the bartender amped it up without even a question. She had a big smile on her face and appeared to want us to be happy. The bocce is a blast and is ideal for couples and friends to compete against. It's a fun game that you can either play in or just watch for depending on how you're feeling. It's a giant game right in the middle of the bar. You won't miss it. This place is ridiculously chill. I came in here with a friend on a Sunday afternoon and plopped my ass on a couch by the fire. My friend got a beer but I just enjoyed the scenery. This place has bocce ball, a full menu for food, a reserved seating area for parties, a downstairs with seating for events, a full bar, 2 fire places, the most comfy couches and a library. I don't think you can take out books, but it's pretty cool just to sit with a book and read. When I came it wasn't very busy at all, but quiet and relaxing. The bartender is great- we ordered an old fashion, a margarita, some red wine and sat at the bar... I loved how quiet and peaceful this place felt around 8pm on a Friday night. Suddenly around 9, the place got rowdy with 40+ people coming out from downstairs (I believe this place has events and comedy shows, which I'd love to check out), so we left to get dinner. It's not quite a date night spot once it turns loud and crowded with people pushing to get drinks ordered at the bar, but I think it offers a lot of variety (games and such) to those who want that atmosphere. To be quite frank this is not the first time I've witnessed unprofessional behavior from management from union hall. I'm pretty disgusted with this bar in general and it's vibe in the neighborhood.. this was the last straw. Came here with a friend after hearing it described as "a bar that feels like a library." Yes--I'm in! There's a lot to say about Union Hall. You walk in, the bar is to your right (it's smaller than you think) and you've got some floor to ceiling book shelves on the left. The shelves are filled with books and are flanked by comfortable seating. It's reminiscent of a social club lounge. Keep walking further and you'll notice a few tables and two huge bocci ball courts/lanes. Bathrooms are downstairs; they're not separated by gender and sport some floor to ceiling doors with the airport like "occupied" latch. Also downstairs is an event space for bands. We didn't get to see it as we went pretty early. Now you've got the layout of the place. Food. Food was pretty good for bar food. Did I just use the word food three times in two sentences? Did I just use it a fourth? I had a burger and fries. The burger was a little disappointing. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good and for the price, I expected better. The fries were delicious though. I highly recommend the Japanese style spicy mayo for extra yummy'ness. Can't say the bartenders were really on point here. Maybe it was just early and they were slightly understaffed, but it wasn't especially bad. I will say that the bartender was a little rude to an incoming patron who had a stroller. He told them they didn't allow strollers, but did it in a kind of crappy way. He kept saying "look at the sign," "the sign explains it," "we don't allow strollers." He could have just said the don't allow strollers in the bar, but instead he just kept telling them to look at the sign. That's not a super friendly way to communicate, but it's also not efficient since there's a couple of signs on the door. One of the only spots in Park Slope with a young crowd, the large space really has something for everyone. There is a basement that for some reason is sometimes able to be used as a private space without actually officially booking it, and the last time I was here was for a friend's birthday where about 10-15 of us got the basement to ourselves and ordered drinks through QR codes. That was so kind of him! ------ * Bocce is a ball sport played on a very long and narrow court that's covered with a thin layer of natural soil. They have 2 courts laid side by side. Two players/teams play per court as designated by the blue and red balls. The white ball is the pallino (or boccino) and the goal is to get your ball as close to the white ball as possible. I like to roll my ball to knock the pallino away from my friend's and closer to mine (hehe). There's a fairly complicated point system that you can research online if you're interested in keeping score. ** They sell event tickets online at Ticketfly (and at the door). Online tickets are cheaper when purchased at least 1 day in advance (was $6 vs $8 for my Battle of the Divas - Beyonce vs Lady GaGa - t'was a great night of comedy, drag queens, and lip syncing!). I love how they have cups and water pitchers at the downstairs bar for people who aren't drinking alcohol. I very much enjoyed this bar. It has a "professors living room vibe" which I definitely dig. Any place that uses couches instead of tables and chairs always gets a big thumbs up in my book. The bar has bocce courts in it, although we couldn't play because there was a "tournament" going on (really, I think the people who got there before us just wanted to hog them and told us that because there was no evidence of a tournament - anyway, I digress). The pricing was reasonable. The service was friendly. The only reason I don't give Union Hall 5 stars is because the food was "meh." The hummus was bland and the veggie burger I had was much like a million veggie burgers I've had in the past. BPC is off the charts here! BPC is "beards per capita" and boy, is this place flush with them. I think even some of the gals had beards. I kid, I kid. But this place is in Brooklyn so what do you expect? Anyway, I came here for 90's alternative karaoke and had a nice time. I started upstairs with a drink and the bartender (probably about my age, glasses, bearded) was awesome. Definitely the hardest working bartender I've seen in awhile. He was amazing. The other bartender probably pulled one beer or got one drink to every five this guy did. The space itself is nice, with a large fireplace, comfy chairs and a bocce court. Crowd is friendly. The downstairs part is a little dingy and has a very low ceiling, but the bartender down there was great too. A nice place. I've been here like 2 or 3 times, but it's always been with lots of time in between each visit since I'm rarely in this part of Brooklyn. My first time here was to cover a band playing downstairs for the CMJ Film & Music Festival (shout out to the awesome Aussie indie band "Boy & Bear" - if you don't know them look em' up!) - here is where I fell in love with this place as a music venue for up and coming musicians. Dark, intimate, great sound and awesome overall aesthetic describes the underground part of Union Hall. My last few jaunts here have been the upstairs bar part which is complete with two awesome bocce ball alleys. Very cool and lots of fun to play when the board isn't reserved by a bajillion people waiting for their turns. Awesome craft beers here, interesting gastropub food offerings and awesome community board by the entrance that advertises cool things going on in the community as far as plays, concerts, comedy nights, etc. go. Gotta love a place that supports the local arts! The bouncer and bartenders here are all friendly and super chill - very Park Slope, Brooklyn if you ask me with their jolly dispositions, awesomely colored/detailed body ink and cool funky glasses and/or accessories. Don't want to call them 'hipsters' because they're much deeper than that, they're just innately coooooooooooool. Yesterday they had bottled Abita Strawberry, this is my favorite in the family of Abita and my instant go-to beer when a bar has more Abitas available than just Purple Haze, which is delicious but decidedly more common than their other fruity craft yums. The overall feel of the bar is also pretty damn awesome. Lots of bookshelves and real books makes me want to take books off the shelf and have a Belle from Beauty in the Beast moment where I want to twirl around as birds drop chirpy beats and I want to sing about how "There must be more than this provincial life!" - and there most certainly IS because Union Hall has three different varieties of "beer cheese". I can easily see how this lovely bar could become my favorite place in park slope. Craft beer prices are super reasonable and interesting (I had the victory winter cheer, $5 at happy hour, and my friend had the slyfox). Next time I'll have to try and get one of the cool victorian-style couches near a fireplace, but I was perfectly happy to score a huge booth near the bocce ball. We played a round and it was a great way to have a drink and do something a little different: I'd recommend it for a really fun date or double date. If I had never tried the food, I would have given 5 stars. But we tried the beer cheese with Ritz and the homemade pretzels.. neither of these items was bad per say but I just felt disappointed after loving the bar itself so much. The beer cheese was a pretty weird texture. It was crumbly and very difficult to get onto a Ritz. The flavors were good though, and the jalapeño didn't disappoint in the spice department. The pretzels were $5 at happy hour. They were a decent snack, but I honestly wouldn't call them pretzels. They were more like baked dough. The accompanying mustard was okay but the second dip was a sweet and spicy sauce- a weird flavor profile with the pretzels but I kindof liked it. Admittedly, I wasn't sure what to expect when I walked in. There is a distinct hipster vibe, between the bookshelves, couches, indoor bocce lanes, and well-curated drink list, but honestly I was impressed. My experience was a bit different because I was part of a large party that had reserved the space in the back, but the food I tasted (bbq sliders, delicious hot wings, and french fries with creamy queso) was good enough for me to seriously consider coming back for more. So many things to say. Very cool interior upstairs, a rad karaoke night downstairs on Fridays, and lots of spots to sit. An overall chill bar ONCE THEY GET RID OF THEIR ASSHOLE DOORMAN. As other reviews have stated, "the heavier, lighter skinned African American doorman" is an outright ass hole. I know doormen don't have the easiest of jobs, but there was no excuse for this guy acting the way he did. After leaving the bar to smoke, I had forgotten my ID inside, and after telling him the situation upon reentering- he just shrugged without looking at me so I took that as his indifference and go to get my ID, walk three steps into the bar and he shouts at me "GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE BAR! GET. THE. FUCK. OUT." at least five times and aggressively bounces on his feet in front of me looking like he's ready to make this physical. Like a 5'5" girl is going to start a fight with him??? A terrible experience. The bouncer earlier in the night was very professional, so I don't know how this other guy still even works there. Disappointing, especially since there are several reviews about him. Ive never written a yelp review but I had to just to express how unprofessional and irrational this guy was. So I came here for the first time on a Friday night, and I was blown away buy the inside decor. They had a library set up in the front left, and toward the back of this lounge, was a Bocce ball game going on. I'm still not sure what the game rules are, but I noticed people wearing white platforms, and rolling balls down like a bowling ball. The beers here are at average price. There are couches to lounge upon, and a menu so you can order food. There's a patio, and downstairs there's another room, where people perform their shows (music, karaoke..etc) I came with a group of friends and had a lot of fun. BUT... I came here the night after for my friend Marissa's birthday, and wow...I must say...I didn't realize how boring this place actually was, or at least the people in it. People are so caught up in their own crowds, making out on the couches, and so afraid to come out of their own shells, that they'll stand by the bar in their suit and dress attire, while fun music blasts. They have THE BEST pumpkin ale. Go get yourself some next season! $6 for a liquid pumpkin pie in beer form that is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. There is plenty of comfy seating with tables and more than 1 bathroom. The food is also well priced and delicious. The nachos are big hearty portions, perfect for not splurging but snacking. They also have 2 huge bowling like lanes for a game that I do not know the name of. There are plenty of couches, old fashioned chairs, and tables to lounge. Finally came to Union Hall on a Saturday night and loved it!! I loved that this bar is so laid back. There were so many people just hanging out or playing bocce ball in the first floor which was cool to watch, then there's the basement area. As soon as you walk downstairs you'll find the bathrooms and then there's a room entrance to the left. That room has a stage, dance floor, and a bar. There are some benches and a couch scattered throughout too. It's such a chill laid back vibe. Also, the people that gather at this bar seem like a fun chill crowd. That Saturday there was a band performing in the beginning and then they switched it up to a DJ. The DJ played so many throwbacks -it was mostly one genre though. He also wouldn't take any requests - I wanted them to play Major Lazer!! Despite the fact that there should've been more variety in the music selection it was still a lot of fun. Note: The only annoying part was that it took an hour for the DJ to start playing. The band left around 12 and then the DJ started playing at 1. When I first heard about Union Hall years ago, I actually thought it was some giant indoor beergarden/hall for young'ns to hang out at. Well, I was wrong on both parts. One, it's a bar with 2 floors. Two, there are young'ns here, but there are also folks a bit older here as well. There is one thing guaranteed in the crowd though ... hipsters! I came here on a Saturday night for a friend's birthday hangout and the place was jam packed at 10pm! Jam packed as in there wasn't much walking room, the bar was 3 people deep in trying to get drinks and any movement of my body would require "contortionistic" skills. As the night wore on, our crew decided to go downstairs (at the cost of $5). Yes, there was a cover charge to go downstairs into the basement area. There was a DJ playing some early 90s music, which actually got people to start dancing. For those who have a drink within a glass cup or bottle, they force you to pour your drink into a paper cup, which was understandable. Eventually, the basement began to get extremely crowded and access to the small bar had become difficult as well. The small bar didn't have as large of a selection as upstairs, but still had a sizable amount for what it was worth. Overall, Union Hall was a cool, chill spot to hang out at. It seemed pretty typical of Park Slope, but it was cool that they had a DJ downstairs to spin to get the crowd going. read more
