I love love love Uncle Yu's. Their food is something I actually yearn for if I don't get it once a month! The service is always spot-on, we always ask for Wesley - as he's so friendly and even brings us our drinks before we ask for them. What do the hubby and I order? You guessed it, a cosmo from the full service bar. Everything here is good, and the menu is expanded from your usual chinese choices. Their food is fresh, and prepared quickly. There are a few items that are my favorites: - potstickers (the best I've had anywhere) - honey walnut prawns (light, crispy & never fishy) - hot and spicy chef's prawns - crab meat puffs - assorted dim-sum apps - chicken salad - light and delish, easy split for 2 My kids love the spare ribs, and the meat sticks, as they come with their own little hibachi burner. Parking is ample, service is impeccable. Really, there is nothing to not like here. I do miss their cherries jubilee with was prepared table-side and a lot of fun to watch. If you like peking duck, order it ahead for a nice treat. They also have a killer variety of moo-shoo. And there is always enough left over to enjoy for several lunches - which is a nice plus for me! I haven't stopped here since I enjoyed two really good banquets luncheons here, and those were both 4 stars. Linda and I had lunch here. I had Mongolian chicken; Linda had orange chicken. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner at Uncle Yu's private room, and everything was fantastic! We had about 60 people and were so happy to have found a restaurant with a private room. The food was great and service very nice. Linda was easy to communicate with, and they were accommodating of an allergy that we had. DISORGANIZED. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. A year ago on Christmas Eve a group gave them individual orders to take out for a movie. The order was called in but when we went to pick it up, it had never been prepared. I waited over an hour for the food to be prepared and I later discovered that I was not given the group discount. Tried them again this year. My wife called at 3:45 and was told it was too early to order because the food would be cold at 5:30 when we wanted it. She was told to call back at 4:45. She did and left the order on the voice mail because no one answered the telephone. When I got there, they did not have the order. When I told the cashier that the order was on the voice mail, she said they were too busy to listen to the calls but I could order and it would be ready in an hour and a half. I walked out and we will never go back there again. I intend to tell all my friends how disorganized they are and suggest they go elsewhere. read more

Uncle Yu's is an upscale Chinese restaurant. I will let my Asian friends tell me whether this is authentic Chinese and if it is what part of China the cuisine comes from. We normally visit their San Ramon location which is now closed due to a fire on Christmas. This location doesn't have the same character as the San Ramon location. Price is always a bit on the high side. Tonight our chicken chow mein had less ingredients then we remember for Uncle Yu's making it even more expensive per ounce. The three ingredient king pao was good but less spicy and flavorful than I remember. Normally when we go to Uncle Yu's it is because we wanted a more elegant experience than is found at most Chinese places. Unfortunately, this atmosphere was missing at Lafayette. Since we have many traditional Chinese places closer to us we will probably not visit this location very often. read more

Ordered $65 of takeout food. I asked for two extra sweet and sour and they charged me a dollar I only had $.90 so I had to put it on my credit card. I thought that was absolutely ridiculous. And after $65 they couldn't give me two free extra sweet-and-sour is this McDonald's. To say the least I am highly disappointed and will be going to great wall from now on. read more

The Wor Wonton Soup tasted like water. Food was extremely bland. I honestly didn't think you could mess up chinese food that bad. I'm being generous with the stars because the staff was quite nice and attentive. Could've just been a bad day for the chef but for the price you pay the food was no where near worth it. This is in the heart of Lafayette and I rarely come. For sure it's "bland" and "regular" Chinese food that doesn't scream authentic in any way but, you know what? I came here for a Mom's holiday party, there were 25 of us and we had a darn good time. There was space for our large group, the service was cheerful and good...the bar was quick and had good wines to choose from by the glass. It was great. If negative stars were possible to give a restaurant, this horribly run business would deserve it. We have had several disappointing experiences but last night was the worst. We ordered over $200 worth of food for our family Christmas Eve dinner. Called at noon to make sure they had our order and would be ready at 6:30. My nieces picked up the food and were only given part of the order. When they asked about the 2nd bag of the order they were told there was only one even thought the receipt said 2. The lady was very rude to them. My sister and sons went back, again treated by unfriendly staff that was lying and trying to blame my nieces that they had the full order. They finally agreed to make the food. They got home again without the full order, no sauces, fortune cookies and chopsticks! I called and again was treated by a rude lady who blamed my family, never apologized. They clearly do not care about their customers. The quality of food was poor to top it off! It takes a lot for me to write a review but could not believe how my entire family was treated when we're just trying to have a nice Christmas Eve dinner. read more

Uncle Yu's gets four stars for amazing service! Their servers were so intuitive that we never had to ask for anything. They were very friendly and unobtrusive. Our food came out rather quickly. It was hot and mildly flavored. The bbq rib appetizer was very tasty. The steamed broccoli was perfect. Not soggy at all. The fried rice and chow mein were decent. However, they could have used a little more flavor. We ordered the black forest cake dessert. It was a small round premade cake with cherries inside. It did not taste like it was described on the menu. I forgot to take a photo of it. It was quite small and commercial tasting. The $8 price was not justified. Another friend had the cheesecake. She only ate one bite. I would definitely recommend a dessert menu change. The pricing for the dishes were rather high even though the portion sizes were decent. Would I return again? Yes. A fancy schmancy Chinese restaurant....This was he first location of theirs that I had tried, and may I say that I enjoyed the food very much. We have held a few dinner meetings in the private dining room, and we received the best service. I have also sat in the main dining room, and have received great service... A few standards I order to determine how much I "like" any Chinese restaurant: Roasted Chicken (awesome), Chow Mein, (I request small noodles to prevent the greasy soggy texture - sometimes they do this and sometimes they won't... Steamed Fish...when they make it with Ginger and Scallions, it is done just right... They do also have an extensive wine selection, better than any other Chinese restaurant I've dined at, but then again, I don't normally go in search of good wine when I am wanting Chinese food... So the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the price. I have had food equally tasty, at a lower price. I know at this price point you are paying for the ambience and the location. I hate to give bad reviews, but this has to be known. The flavor of the non vegetarian items have substantially dropped. The fish with black bean sauce is probably the worst item on the menu. The sauce had no garlic flavor, very soupy and tasted very fishy. My large family and I got over 10 dishes and all the non vegetarians were very disappointed. I hope they improve. read more

I had a craving for won ton soup tonight and we decided to order from Uncle Yu's out of desperation since it's one of the only local Chinese restaurants. I had ordered from them once before and didn't care much for it, but decided to give it another chance. Just as I remembered - the soup was bland, the won ton dumplings had a weird taste to them, broccoli chicken was flavorless and not fresh and the lemon chicken was not very good. Better than average Chinese food. I came in with my kids and my parents. What I like about this place is that the cooks know how to cook. The shrimp in my sweet and sour was crisp and hot, the noodles in my mein had that 'old, well seasoned wok' flavor that is so yummy. My dad produced a little wadded up piece of paper that the waiter took to the kitchen. I didn't really pay attention until the food came and I realized what happened. My dad worked for the city of San Jose when I was a kid and he used to park his truck under the same tree and eat the same lunch every day. He bought a portable TV and would watch Bewitched while he ate. There was a Chinese restaurant a couple of blocks a day and my dad would eat there and have the guy throw things into mein. He wound up with a dish that has bbqed pork (char siu), onions, pineapple and a sauce that is mainly ketchup. While it's not a brilliant dish I ate it with him many times when I was young and hadn't thought about that dish in 30 years. It brought a tear to my eye when I saw it. My dad is 89. To think of how much joy he has gotten out of that little scrap of paper and how important it makes him feel that the restaurant did something special for him! Even without the emotional lift it was a nice experience. The decor is nice and this is a good place. You'll pay a bit more than the usual neighborhood Chinese place but here it's worth it. read more

It was prime time traffic going home to Pittsburg. My son and I were hungry so we wanted to find a dine in restaurant to kill time. We were in the mood for Asian food and Uncle Yu's was the nearest place. We exited and the restaurant was easy to find off the freeway. The restaurant had a outside dining area in front and the inside was clean. The restaurant smelled so good and we knew we were in for a treat. The waitress was super nice and politely greeted us. We ordered our drinks then went to the bathroom. Bathroom was clean and had a fresh scent. Thumbs up for that. We came back and our water with lemon and drinks were on our table with straws. Starting off on a good note. We ended up ordering the family dinner which included appetizers, soup, and 3 main dishes. They had 3 types of sauces and the waitress told us what sauce is for what appetizers. Sauces and appetizers were BOMB!!! (Egg rolls, cheese puff wontons, and pot stickers) We choose to have Wonton Soup instead of Hot and Sour soup and we made the right choice. The Wonton soup had water chestnuts. Spinach, slices of pork, and the wontons were cooked perfect!!! For the main dishes we had crispy chicken and Kung Pao seafood. Food tasted HELLA GOOD!l that I had to YELP this place. My son told me that this restaurant was one of the best places he ate at. We are definitely coming back especially to kill traffic. Something has happened at Uncle Yu's recently, perhaps due to Covid-19, supply chain issues, personnel changes, Lafayette commercial rents, etc. Quality of ingredients is still pretty much the same, but, for example, chow mien combo now contains less meat, chicken and shrimp than in former days. On top of that change, the chow mien combo that only two or three years ago cost $9.50 now costs $15.50! (Website priced it at $14.50) Is it worth this price increase of $6.00 (63%). Not for this customer. The more substantial items, for example, beef with broccoli that not along along cost $12.00 now costs $16.50 (website price), perhaps a buck more at checkout. Very disappointed with these substantial price increases, most likely to keep me from coming back soon. One possible exception: The hot and sour soup, one of the very best you can find anywhere, remains priced at $9.00. read more

The opposite is also true, as was the case last weekend at Uncle Yu's, which used to come very highly regarded a couple years ago. That memory drove me to pick it for an unusual night with takeout. Uncle Yu's is okay. One of the better options for Chinese food in the Lamorinda area. But, if you're craving quality Chinese, you're better off making the trek to Chinatown. We ended up here because our favorite spot in Lafayette was Mangia because of the nostalgia of having pizza, bear and wine after softball. So here we go.Barely 3 stars IMO largely because we found their dishes very underwhelming and under flavored. There is nothing special going on with their food. For example the orange chicken that we ordered only had a very faint taste of orange to it. You wouldn't know what it was if it was served to you. The scallop sauce actually tasted more like an orange sauce even though it's not advertised as such. So our takeaway is this, if you like your Chinese food more towards the bland side you'll like it otherwise I'm quite certain there's better Chinese food close by. read more
