I loved Oyama Suishi in Walnut Creek and am saddened that it has closed.i have yet to find really good Lion King rolls!

We finally tried this spot and they were gracious enough to hold a table for us after I called. The restaurant has a contemporary feel inside. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We started with gyoza, edamame, and a couple rolls. Everything was tasty and the sashimi was fresh. I had the tempura entree and everyone else had the beef teriyaki entrees. The tempura was nicely fried. The beef entrees were tender and flavorful. The beef was on the smaller size but good. Quality is there, servings were slightly on the smaller side IMO. I love Oyama! The food is awesome and the restaurant is very nice and clean. Friendly staff and I like watching them make and slice the sushi. For my birthday I decided to order a lot of sushi for my sushi party. I bought a few sushi boats and had Oyama fill them up with some of my favorite rolls, nigiri and sashimi! Turned out awesome. Fish is fresh and they have real wasabi too. The dishes I like the best is Hamachi Kama and their California Crunch roll. The salmon, hokkaido scallop, toro, and ebi sashimi/nigiri are my must haves. They also have really great uni that is savory and sweet! I like to bring friends here whenever I get the chance or order on doordash when I'm lazy haha! read more

Mike was our server and 100% amazing--we love coming here and him greeting us and making us feel like family. As usual, we order Lion King, Jalapeño Jumper, sake nigiri, hamachi nigiri, maguro nigiri, cherry blossom, under the sea, edamame, tempura, etc.... Oh and the large hot sake--like a few of those please. Everything so good! We always love Mike and his amazing and friendly service, the hello and good bye and sweet care he gives us. Haven't been here in a while so figured I'd give this place a review. First off, beware coming here on a Friday night. It gets crazy. And I mean, crazy. Limited parking poses an issue in the first place. Then, because there's one door and one walkway, there were so many people the staff couldn't tell who was waiting for a table and who was waiting for a take out order. So it took us quite a while before staff figured out my bf and I were waiting on a table. No one to greet, no one to ask. And staff was running around dealing with customers who were already seated. Hence the -1 star. Something should be done about the efficiency of trying to sort sit in customers versus take out. That said, once we got seated, service was quick to ask what we wanted and given it had taken awhile for us to get a seat in the first place, we put our order in fairly quickly. Kitchen staff works fast so we got our orders one after another in a fairly streamline manner. I ordered the edamame for appetizer, and then the rainbow roll and lion king roll while my bf ordered the Godzilla roll and the 49ers roll. Their rainbow roll and lion king roll are really good. I think the lion king uses some cream sauce similar to Alfredo sauce so it has a fairly strong garlic taste to it. Not that I'm complaining. Fair warning on Godzilla, it basically is straight sriracha on top so it's spicy so I didn't bother trying it since my bf said it was spicy. The 49ers roll was good...although I'm not sure how I feel about the lemon on top. I know this roll is served at other restaurants but given I'm not one for straight lemon, I'm not sure if it's really needed on top. Or whether lemon juice would suffice. That said, edamame was good since I haven't had it in awhile but I suppose it's nothing special. Just fun to eat. All in all, I'd come back...just probably not on a Friday night. read more

A definite Pass. Took my mom here for dinner. Even though we were the first ones in the restaurant, it took a while to get any attention from the waiter. He was loud and seemed to rush our order. Did not seem to take into account that she is 90 years old. He tried to rush her order. I was glad I slowed things down and clarified her order. Drinks took a while to come out and same with the appetizer which wasn't hot either. Food was decent enough, but not enough to offset the rude behavior of the waiter. I would never come back to this restaurant. The thing that stood out to me the most, besides the poor quality of sushi, was that the waiter literally kept walking away from us while we were in the middle of ordering. We had no idea if he even heard our order because he walked away and turned his back twice while we were in mid sentence. It wasn't busy, there was maybe 2 other tables in there max. It was very bizarre to us. The sushi roll pieces were humongous which is always a bad sign to me. They were very sloppy and poorly made. The glass of Cabernet I ordered was good and that's about it. I went on a Tuesday around noon, and the restaurant was not very busy at all. Only two other patrons were there. The staff outnumbered the customers, and they were talking/arguing very loudly with one another. The ambiance was sterile and casual. Everything was clean lots of natural lighting though. My server was very attentive and got my food out quickly. Miso soup comes with most entree options on the menu. When I got mine, it was lukewarm and had only a few pieces of tofu, which had a strange melt-in-your-mouth texture. The flavor was lacking the umami flavor all miso soups must have, only being a bit salty but no other depth. I know that it's the default soup of this restaurant, but I wish they had put more effort into it... I ordered the chirashi don (pictured). I only enjoyed 3/5 of the proteins provided by the chef. The tuna and salmon were soft, thick, and fresh-tasting. The mackerel/saba(?) was very tough/almost crunchy, and it feels like they gave me a weird cut and tried to cover it up in the presentation. I couldn't even bite through the huge piece, and there was a large red bit that went down the side. The shrimp was tasty (idk how you can mess up shrimp), but they only gave one that was butterflied. The sweet egg was okay, just not my personal preference. Overall, there are higher quality, tastier places to go to in the area for this price point. read more

This place is definitely worth a try. So I nanny on Thursdays. Instead of cooking, the kids usually pick what they want on DoorDash. Now recently we have been ordering from Oyama Sushi! The kids get the basic rolls (California, tekka & saki). Now I mix up my orders all the time, I absolutely love the super crunky roll! Some other good rolls are Hot Mamasita Roll Golden Bear Roll, Dragon Roll! I personally like to add cream cheese & gets side of spicy Mayo & unagi. The restaurant has a long, wrap-around sushi bar, but the chefs are obscured so you can't watch the sushi preparation. Service is always prompt, but at times the waitstaff can give the impression of rushing you to leave. Oyama has been our go to spot since we moved to Lafayette 3 years ago. They are consistent, reasonably priced, and great for both take-out and dining in. It's tough to find a "go-to" sushi spot, and we tried every place in Lafayette and Orinda to find our favorite, and Oyama was off the charts, they exceeded our expectations. The location is small but we've always been able to have a seat. The service is efficient and friendly, and everything is brought quickly without us feeling rushed. To-go wise, they pack it perfectly and I've never had a bad experience. You won't be disappointed! Every roll we've had, we've loved. read more

I can't believe I have lived in Lafayette for over three years and just discovered this place. In summary one of the very best Japanese restaurants I have eaten in, as good as anything I have had in Japan. Went for lunch. Started the meal with hot saki and toro sushi; outstanding, even the ginger and wasabi served with the sushi was outstanding. My wife had the sushi sampler with salad, I had the grilled miso sea bass with miso soup and rice. Everything was beautifully cooked, presented and tasted fantastic. As an added bonus, the food was served on what looked like a Japanese version of Heath pottery, nice touch. The restaurant decor is bright and tasteful. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Total cost for this amazing lunch was only $70, plus tip. Like Arnold said; "I will be back"! You may have noticed all my reviews to date on Yelp have been 5 star, this is deliberate. Life is too short to focus on that which does not make us happy. This is why I restrict my reviews to those things/places/services that make me happy and appreciate life. I don't know if we were there at a bad time or just on a bad day, but this place was horrible. First of all we walked in, we asked for a table and we're told "no table." We said that's okay we'll sit at the bar then no problem. It took forever to get our drink order which was two bottle sodas. As we were waiting for our food, we noticed that most of the cooks were drinking behind the counter. Looks like it has recently changed hands to a new name of "O'Yammy," still using the Oyama labeled dishes, so I'm assuming it is a very recent change. I am dog sitting in Orinda, so I decided to give this place a shot. The food was okay and only okay. The prices were considerably higher and a lesser quality of fish than I get at my "regular" sushi spot in Concord. I ordered 2 rolls, one did not indicate on the menu that it was covered in roe (thankfully not an issue for me, but I did scrape most of it off) and strangely wasabi and ginger only came out with the first roll. I had polished off the ginger in the 10 minutes between the first and second rolls arrival. I was also VERY surprised to find that I was charged $4.95 for a very weak pot of green tea. Glad I didn't accept the refill that was being pushed as I left! $10.00 for weak green tea and I might have stroked out. The aquarium is also very difficult to look at while eating. Please, if you are going to have "pets" in your establishment, act like you care about their welfare. Seating someone to stare at them while it takes 30 minutes for 2 rolls to come out is stomach churning. I will say the staff was kind and very sweet to the young family who was also eating in on this night. Toddlers can be difficult, but the staff was gracious and they were cuties! So plus 1 for that. Also the spicy sushi were so spicy that they were impossible to eat and the spice level just didn't suit sushi well (and I am good with spice). If my teen daughters and I could choose to patronize just one Lafayette CA restaurant during "shelter in place," it's Oyama Sushi! Their owner told me yesterday (when I was gratefully grabbing a to-go order) that they will remain open for takeout--YESSSS! Their sushi is so bright and absolutely delicious. The Lafayette Roll is especially unique and healthy and yummy. They even let me make up my own roll, "the Stacy roll" (tobiko inside; salmon, lemon slice, and green onion on top--try it!) and when I come in or order to-go, they always remember it.
