Uncle Yu's in Lafayette is old school. That's not a bad thing, but it's a very different experience from the location in Livermore. The decor is older and more modest. The menu is straightforward, no seasonal offerings. The staff are unpretentious and attentive. It's quiet, not a place to people watch. You go here to eat well-prepared Chinese food. I went classic with sweet and sour pork. Great portion size, well-balanced, delicious, especially with a side of rice. I also tried the assorted appetizers. Everything was good, but the fried prawn was probably my favorite. They flatten the shrimp before breading and frying, which gives them a great texture. No fancy drinks on this visit, just lemonade. Parking is easy, either on the street or in the public lot beside it. Just remember you have to pay. Not my regular stomping grounds, but a decent meal if you are in. This place came highly recommended as an authentic Chinese restaurant. At first, I was a bit thrown off by the strong cigarette smoke in the restaurant (their smoke break area is an open space that directs the smell and smoke directly into the restaurant). We decided to stay in slight if the smell. Our server was very nice, prompt and informative. We ordered the honey walnut prawn salad and Peking spareribs which were both delicious. I had a glass of wine and my husband ordered an old faishioned which his said was just "ok". All-in-all, we would give them another chance. Both dishes were worth another try, for sure. read more

We visited for dinner this past weekend with our daughter who is a junior at Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga. We wanted to go somewhere nice for dinner and spend time together. Our party of three was seated immediately and with warm courtesy. They have adorable little electronic candle lamps at the tables now, which helped create a lovely ambience. They have an extensive wine list, but we opted not to imbibe. After looking over the menu and seeing many delicious choices on offer, we opted to try the family dinner. It was an excellent and satisfying meal with three good appetizers, choice of two soups, and a variety of entrées to select from, two of which we were going to choose anyway. We all opted for a cup of wonton soup, which was actually Wor wonton, served at the perfect temperature, and the broth was generously filled with all the traditional ingredients you'd expect. Entree portions were generous so we were able to share. The honey walnut prawns were tender and tasty; the walnuts were perfectly toasted with optimum sweetness, not too sticky, and there were plenty of them. The General Tsou's chicken dish was also excellent, as was the Mandarin Triple Crown. Pork fried rice is included with the family dinner, and while we don't usually choose fried rice, this dish was quite good - not too dry or oily and filled with good veggies and flavorful pork. We actually had a nice little bag of leftovers which we had our daughter keep and put in her dorm room fridge - she and her roommate both enjoyed that the next day. We love Uncle Yu's at the Vineyard in Livermore (where we live), but rarely get to dine there because the prices are so high - happily, this Uncle Yu's has equally excellent cuisine but the prices are definitely better, which was a nice surprise. I used to work in Lafayette over 20 years ago and my co-workers and I liked to pop over to Uncle Yu's for work lunches when we could. My husband and I would also occasionally go there on dates before we were married. It was great to see this restaurant is still around, and to find that the food is still as good as ever. My wife and I just ate at uncle Yu's. I 've eaten Chinese food for over 70 years on the East and West coasts and I've cooked it for over 40 years. Chinese is my favorite cuisine - All the different provinces. I also spent three weeks in China where the food is different and better than American Chinese. I had Garlic Prawns for dinner and it was excellent. The dish was very tasty with a light spice, which was very good. My wife had Dragon and Phoenix. Her dish was bland with very little taste. It could've used some garlic and maybe soy sauce to give it a flavor. The service was very good. Our server was attentive and took care of all of our needs. Mandarin Triple Crown Taste was goon but the cornstarch made was really thick and clumpy, especially in the broccoli. Mu Shu Taste is good but there are around 4 wraps which isn't very much given the price. Mongolian beef Really on the salty side. I don't recommend ordering this without a large amount of rice. We had noodles and it was too much salt and didn't mask the flavor much. Singaporean noodle Noodles had a good amount and good curry flavor but the meat pieces are a bit dry Service was slow but ambiance was nice. All of the items in my order were gluten free. There are a lot of tasty choices. They do a great job of servicing folks with this particular allergen. However, the food was just okay. I can understand why the rating. It was the standard stuff, but we (the gf and the pooch) never said "Wow". They were all nice sized and generous portions. * Beef & Broccoli [3.5 stars, $16.50] -- good, but not great beef. * Prawns w/Mixed Vegetables [3.5 stars, $17] -- underdone shrimp, but overall, meh. * Fried Rice [3.5 stars, $13] -- we didn't get meat, so our fault it that it was plain, but under-seasoned. * Sauteed Green Beans [4.0 stars, $14] -- this was delish. Disappointed. Kung Pao Tofu -- the sauce tasted like absolutely nothing. Zero flavor! Zilch! The bill was $56.00 wow I was not happy with the food the prawns were hard so over cooked ! We moved from NY 10 years ago to watch our granddaughters grow up. As you can imagine NYC has some of the best Chinese food in the world.NYC Chinatown once got an overall 5 star rating from Michelin based upon you can great food in almost any restaurant. Using that as a baseline we have found the food at Uncle Yu's to be excellent. Everything is fresh and well made. We mostly take out but whenever we eat there the service is great and the ambiance is very comfortable. Looking at the reviews on yelp I cannot understand why anyone would give them a low rating. I was surprised when reading the recent reviews to see several negative ones. This was a DoorDash order and I was overall pleasantly surprised by how good everything tasted. All the dishes arrived hot, were well packaged and well presented. Everything tastes fresh. Of particular note I found the Peking Chicken very enjoyable, by 'Peking' they really meen a sweet chili (not very spicy) sauce, the chicken was tender and full of flavor. The Peking Duck was beautifully carved and presented, we got it with the pancakes which is a rare option in California as it seems most give you the buns. The duck was cooked to perfection, juicy boneless strips of duck with deliciously crispy skin The Mongolian Beef is an interesting one. If you are like me you may also have developed a thing for cold Chinese food the following day. The beef, whilst by no means bad upon arrival, takes on new form once cooled as the flavors really come out. Of all the dishes I find the shrimp and chicken dish to be the least exciting. Again not bad per se just a it underwhelming when contrasted against the other dishes. If you prefer a very subtle flavor then this may be for you. Overall though I considered my experience here positive and will be trying Yu's again. read more

Uncle Yu's has been consistently good when it comes to Chinese food; it's our go to place when we're craving Chinese food. Love the pot stickers, the spring rolls & mushi-pork for starters; actually all there appetizers are tasty. My current go to is their honey walnut shrimp on a salad just the right size for one. Hubby enjoys their general chicken or the orange beef or anything fish . Also if there's something specific you're craving & you don't see it on their menu ask & they will probably be able to make it for you. For me it's string beans done in black bean sauce, not sure if it's on the menu, but when asked for it appears. Uncle Yu's is a Lafayette staple for lack of a better description; it's been there for as long as I can remember. There is also one in Pleasanton, yet the menu is a little different & each chef seems to make things a little different, still good. So if you're craving good Chinese Food head on over. read more

I've been coming to Uncle Yu's for many years and often times the staff lacks good customer service, including the woman in the front who answers the phone to take food orders. Just the other day, I asked for soy sauce because I have not been getting any in my last 2 take out orders. I got shamed, questioned, and blamed over mentioning the lack of soy sauce I've not been receiving. She even shamed me for a 2nd time when I arrived to pick up my food regarding soy sauce. I really don't appreciate being treated disrespectfully as a customer and especially as a regular customer. To make my experience even more memorable, my entire salad contained all rotten pieces of lettuce and had hair in it. I ended up throwing my salad in the garage. Please see photos. Last but not least, please stop asking your customers if they want to tip the kitchen staff on "take out" orders . It's tacky and low class to ask. We've been going to Uncle Yu's for 35 yrs. It has lost a step or two over the years. From the egg rolls to the pork fried rice it all tastes bad. There is no flavor, well the flavor of the 800 year old unwashed wok comes shining through, but otherwise is tasteless. Like brine water from olives. Even the fortune cookies are horrible. My wife cracked it open read the fortune "you will be redecorating this year" and said " I'll be reevaluating my dining this year" and spit the cookie out. This place needs a complete overhaul or closure. But since I am homer, I am rooting for them to find a good chef and new cookware. Maybe pass the baton to the nephew.... read more

Well, truly disappointed after reading supposedly rave reviews. I was thinking about using them for catering a big party and thought I'd best try their food first! Ordered tonight the Mongolian Beef and Beef with orange sauce. Even though there was plenty of food, the flavors in both dishes was terribly lacking. Both were supposed to be spicy - nah wasn't happening. Not even sure why I'm giving 3 stars. There is a better option in Lafayette and one in Moraga. Both with chefs that know how to flavor their dishes. One and done with Uncle Yu's. Sadly won't be using them to cater my party. read more

Sadly Uncle Yu's food fails in many ways: Very soggy, nothing crispy huere. if you like crispy Orange beef or chicken you will not find it here.. Flavors are generally lacking. The Mongolian beef looked like slop, a mash of over cooked vegetables and tiny beef pieces, in a gooey corn starch laden sauce. Does not hold a candle to Mongolian from P F Chang where they use beef filet. Even the egg rolls lacked flavor and were filled with stringy veges. The Orange chicken was bad, the breading should be tangy and crunchy, not bland and gooey. Panda Express (down Mt Diablo Blvd) is half the price and the food is much better. The spoiler was when the owner wanted to charge me for a small take out Hoisin Sauce container. Amazing! Avoid the Uncle if you want good food. read more

Really bad food, the Chinese chicken salad we ordered had lettuce cut into chunks, nothing else, with some soggy noodles ( supposed to be crunchy) and sugary thin dressing. Never had such a nasty salad. Went downhill from there, the noodles, were bland, the kung pao chicken no flavor. Other items ordered were just either tasteless or totally bland. On top of all top of nasty food, the receptionist is totally lacking in customer service, no greeting, no acknowledgement of customers presence. Downright rude. Well! not going to ho back ever.
