Fantastic Saturday lunch at Amarin Thai Cuisine! We walked by and saw their lunch special sign and were sold. Take a look for yourself with our photos. The lunch special is 3 courses for $20. You may decide to pay to update items if you wish. We did on a couple items. The crab Rangoon won tons were really good. The hot and sour soup hit the spot. And our main courses were yellow curry chicken and stir fried eggplant and chicken. The stir fried chicken was a little dry so I took a start off for that, but in truth we dunked out in the yellow curry and it was amazing. Customer service here was lacking and the food does not come with typical sides. For example curries don't come with rice and have to be ordered separately. First I've ever seen this. We started placing the order and the staff was curt. When our drinks came she was holding a takeout bag with straws in her hand and said can you help (get your own straw). Was confused by the attitude since it wasn't busy. We were also uncomfortable when the staff removed an all day set meal/hh menu (we arrived at the window) we were presented when we asked about it. Happened upon this place via OpenTable and made a reservation. It's a very cute building and interior the staff was very attentive and friendly. We ordered the fresh spring rolls which were very tasty. We had 2 orders of pad Thai one crab and 1 shrimp. We were a little underwhelmed with the flavor on both. The short rib noodles were good. I added a decent amount of spices to bring some more heat to it and also had an order of the pineapple fried rice which was okay. The best parts of the meal were the Pom mimosas and the desserts! The service here was stressed out from the festival and were moving with anxiety but the restaurant wasn't even busy. The ambiance was pleasantly quiet and its interior consisted of both modern and antique decor which gives the restaurant its authentic Thai & south Asian character. Super friendly service and the best tom yum soup that we've had and we've had a lot! The pumpkin curry was flavorful and spicy as was the curry roti dish. Their roti is more like naan and is a bit thicker than at most other Thai restaurants but soaked up the curry sauce really well. They've got a big assortment of drinks on their menu that adults and kids can choose from. Their location is right in the heart of town and there is a big public parking lot in the back. Went here for lunch on a Monday and was so happy with the food and service! We got the hot Ginger tea and kombucha which were both delicious. The short rib soup was so flavorful and our server recommended the jalapeño vinegar to add from the condiment tray and it was a fantastic pairing. Unfortunately my more recent experiences ordering from Amarin Thai have been a lot less enjoyable than my first one several years ago. The best I can say is that it's been hit or miss. I tried again recently and the experience was abysmal. As a starting point, our pick up order was almost 40 minutes late - meaning my husband sat in his car waiting that entire time. That's wildly late considering the food was supposed to be ready 20 minutes from when we placed the order. Things got worse from there. Almost every single thing we ordered was terrible. The chicken in each chicken dish was dry and overcooked. The cashew chicken in particular was downright gross. The sticky rice was extremely dry. I could neither find nor taste the crab in the Dungeness crab rangoon. The portions were so much smaller than I remember them being previously. Our friend recommended this place to us. We love spicy food and wanted an impromptu, intimate, and fresh date night. The place is very colorful and upscale feeling, nothing drab or pretentious. Over the years, Amarin has been in the hands of some truly amazing owners--Tom, Pary, Aomy, and now, under the care of Ethan, Kitty, and their chefs. Each of them has shared a deep passion for authentic Thai cuisine, bringing the flavors of Thailand to the Bay Area with dedication and love. Recently, Amarin closed for about a month for renovations, and the results are impressive. I'm updating my review on this business. Amarin used to be my favorite Thai restaurant, and then it really went downhill when it transferred ownership a number of years ago. I went in again recently and it's improved so much. Their green curry is amazing (I've become addicted!), their drunken noodles are wonderful, and they have a lovely lunch special that starts at only $19. It's not easy to have a great lunch for that price in Lafayette. Amarin is a good Thai restaurant again, and that makes me very happy! When researching for a Thai restaurant, I found this little gem on the way to UC Berkeley so we can have a Valentine's lunch then go pick up our son for the long weekend. First the decor in the restaurant is lovely and well thought out, the fresh flowers on the table were a definite plus, especially for the occasion. My favorite was most definitely the fried whole Branzino fish! It's a must try. Not was it only aesthetically presented, it was also fried perfectly and the tangy sauce drizzled over it made each mouthful a joy. They even took the time to fillet the fish and reconstructed the fried fish fillets back into the whole fish presentation - just genius and beautiful. I also really loved the lychee iced tea, very refreshing and the lychee fragrant sweet and pleasant. The owner was very courteous and tried to introduce and explain how they did the fish to us. The server came to refill the water several times and helped us pack the extra food to go. All in all, we had a wonderful Valentine's Day lunch and it was a plus that the restaurant was just 20 min drive from UC Berkeley campus. Needless to say, we will definitely be back. read more
