I've been here twice for their Korean-Chinese menu and have really enjoyed my food both times! They are one of the few restaurants in the Bay Area (especially East Bay) that has a Korean-Chinese menu, so I was very excited. You'll have to ask for this menu as they normally just give the standard Chinese-American menu. We had the Korean style chicken wings (kkampoongi), the black bean noodles (jjajjangmyun), and the palbochae (Korean seafood mix) and all were delicious. We came here for takeout and got 2 dishes, the beef chow fun and the spicy eggplant. I was expecting to like it more because of the great reviews, but I thought it was just mediocre. Although the chow fun was actually pretty good, it was overly greasy with a lot of grease at the bottom of the to-go container, and I wished it had more meat. But they did include bean sprouts which is the way I like my chow fun! The eggplant had very good flavor, but was a little watery and plain. I wished it had slivered wood ear and slivered bamboo shoots to give it some crunch and texture, like other places which include these in their eggplant dishes. The manager seemed very nice. Was in the mood for jjajang and someone recommended this place. Didn't know we had a Korean-Chinese place in Lafayette. Walked in late in the afternoon just before they closed for their break. Interesting ambiance - kind of feels like they took over a western restaurant and didn't do much remodeling. Service was very friendly and prompt. Unfortunately I didn't care much for the jjajang - it was just a bit bland. I know there are different ways to make jjajang so maybe others will like it. Great Wall has been our favorite Chinese restaurant, so we drive all the way from SF to eat here when we have a craving for their hot & sour soup (the best!), honey walnut prawns, ginger chicken and/or fried rice. Not everything is great but they do some dishes very well. The chefs have been there for more than 25 years. The service has always been good. That is until... Last Friday, Feb. 21st, we drove over and showed up at 8:05pm (on the dot) and the manager refused to seat us, insisting that they only do takeout after 8pm. We argued that their posted hours are until 8:30pm and we were there at 8:05pm. Not only that, their sigh posted outside, clearly states "last seating 15 minutes before closing". We've never seen the guy before and if the owners are smart they'll get rid of him before he drives their business down. A regular member of the staff even asked whether he should seat us, but he told them no. So awful as it ruined our experience and we brought a few people with us. read more

10/10 really delicious! After Mandarin Garden closed down, been searching for a place that has jjajangmyeon and jjampong as similar to theres. Been knowing the restaurant owners previously and they recommended Great Wall and the owner would sometimes work as a chef here!! Food was great, honey walnut prawns were such a huge portion and the egg fried rice was flavorful as well. The jjampong hit the spot as well and the portions for everything were massive. Assorted appetizers were very tasty, their sauces complimented it a lot and I definitely want to try their calamari next time! Fabulous food and service. I always start with tea and Won ton soup. Theirs is the best. The flavor is perfect. A real soup with home made wontons.and snap peas and mushrooms and shrimp. I truly enjoy coming to this restaurant. The service is amazing. I watched as they brought the food out to the table next to me, and plated it tableside in lettuce bowls. It's like lunch and a show. Such an amazing presentation. My favorite dish is the Great Wall Chicken. I'm not sure how they slice the chicken breast into such thin strips, but I'm impressed and I love it. The chicken is so tender, the sauce is sweet and spicy, and it's such a well balanced flavor. I typically don't enjoy white rice but I always order it with white rice to not take away from the flavor of the dish. This is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant that I visit. I can't tell people enough how fast the food comes out and how attentive the servers are. Truly a great place to eat and socialize. read more

In spite of loads of Asian customers, I was underwhelmed with food, ambiance and service. It was like a second thought. Very delicious meal here. Came here on a weeknight with my aunt and uncle and it was pretty busy, but we got seated right away. The food was incredibly fresh and each dish was pretty generously sized, and service was friendly. We went with the hot and sour soup (medium, $11.50), potstickers (6 for $12.95), oyster sauce beef ($17.95), hot and spicy eggplant ($15), and steamed rice for the table. Everything came out pretty fast and there was plenty of food for the three of us, and we walked away with leftovers. The hot and sour soup had a good level of hot and a lot of tofu and mushrooms. The eggplant was actually spicy and is one of the best versions of this dish that I've had compared to other restaurants. The oyster sauce beef was my favorite dish of the meal, though: lots of beef, crisp snow peas, and medallions of bamboo shoots (which was different than the strips that bamboo shoots typically get cut into, and I really liked). The sauce had a nice, rich flavor. The potstickers were crispy on the bottom and soft with the right amount of chew on top, and were stuffed with a lot of juicy pork. We were full and satisfied by the end of the meal and there was enough left for lunch the next day for one person, maybe two. I would love to come back for a second meal here to try more on the menu and definitely recommend checking it out. read more

Many years ago, there was a Chinese restaurant where China Palace is now. The name escapes me, but I remember they had amazing Mandarin Prawns. While driving the other day, I got an overwhelming craving for them, I swear I could even smell them. I did a quick search on Yelp and found The Great Wall Restaurant in Lafayette has Mandarin Prawns, so off I went. The restaurant is in an older building on Golden Gate Way--I think the restaurant is at least 20 years old. I was greeted by several friendly people and sat at a table for two. The service was excellent. The restaurant is an interesting mix of Rocky Mountain Lodge and Chinese restaurant. Rock arches, wooden walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, a fireplace, and wood beams meet vivid colors and Asian decor. They have a full bar, too! I dug it; it was my kind of place! I perused the menu, found my Mandarin prawns, and ordered hot and sour soup. I know I'm crazy to have soup in this heat, but I was glad I did; it was delish! The Mandarin prawns were $19.95, but I had to have them. To my delight, a HUGE portion of glistening prawns appeared in front of me! There were over 20 prawns! Take my money now! The dish was wonderful; it truly satisfied that hankering. I'm definitely going back to try more dishes. The flavors were great, and the portions were very generous. They will be closed from 6/24 to 7/8; the chefs will be on vacation. read more

Like others on yelp, we enjoyed the hot & sour soup that came with the lunch specials but the tiny little iceberg salad (two bites?) w/watery bland dressing was forgettable, why bother. The chicken & veggie lunch was ok. My shrimp & veggie lunch was super bland and rather oily with very few shrimp (4 small pcs?) but again, fine. Our leftovers that night were enhanced dramatically by the Momofuku's famous Chili Crunch we had on hand -- made ALL the difference. My favorite spot in Lafayette and one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Maybe part nostalgia but also the good food and the fast and friendly service that keeps me and my family coming back to Great Wall. They're open for indoor dining and takeout. They space parties quite far apart if you're inside. I always order the salt and pepper calamari. It is so crispy and tasty. Sometimes we'll order the mu shu pork or the potstickers for appetizer, which are always good to share. They have a full bar and I usually get a mai tai, which is fantastic. My parents like to share a half carafe of their house red or white wine. It's the perfect amount to share between two people. Their lunch special is the best deal. It comes with your choice of entree, soup of the day (usually hot and sour soup or egg drop), eggroll or salad and choice of white rice, fried rice or brown rice. You used to be able to choose chow mein as a side but I think they recently did away with that option. It's still a great deal. All of that food for about $12. The portions they give you for the entree are a good size. Service is pretty fast unless they're busy and always friendly. The staff recognizes my family at this point and we don't even come in very regularly anymore. Takeout is also fast. Food is usually ready in ten minutes. Glad they made it through the pandemic. It'll be a sad day if/ when there's no Great Wall in Lafayette. read more

Really nice local Lafayette favorite. They are so nice and serve quality food. Our kids love to get the chicken and beef stick appetizer and the plain lo mein noodles for dinner. Will not return. The wonton soup is gross. They thicken the broth with corn starch; I've never seen it like this, slimy and unappetizing. My guess is that they are being a bit lazy and are using the same soup base for the wonton soup, which should be a thin chicken broth, and the hot and sour soup (which is thickened with corn starch). If this is true, there's just a lack of caring of what's sent out to the tables. Sweet and sour chicken was fine, hard to mess up deep fried chicken in that sauce. read more

Pretty good restaurant. This is a good place for Chinese food in Lafayette. The decor inside looks old from the 70s or 80s but the food is good. We had the standard Kung pao chicken, Mongolian beef, vegetable chow mein and steamed vegetables. The meats were a little oily but the flavor of everything was good. It was plenty of food for 4 adults. The people who recommended it said that it's the best in the area and I would go back. We had takeout this time but I would dine in next time. read more

A little tucked away, The Great Wall was a pleasant surprise. Lots of free parking across the street and a large sign announces that they are not a-hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Four of us ordered from the lunch menu. We started with a Chinese chicken salad to share. The lunch specials come with a soup (hit the spot!) and a choice of salad or crispy veg egg roll and a choice of rice. We ordered chicken Kong pap, Great Wall chicken, Great Wall beef and a three combo. Decent size servings. Good tasting and freshly made. Unfortunately, there must be just one cook as the dishes came out serially. So our choice was to wait for all four - and let the food get cold - or start eating, before everyone was served. After the third dish came, we gave up and dug in. They don't have any desserts but happy to give you extra fortune cookies! Overall a spacious, neat, clean restaurant with good food. Prices may be a couple of bucks high, but so is the rent. Would be great if the servers were a little friendlier. Maybe it's the language barrier. Definitely recommend. read more
