Still my fav Chinese restaurant in the Lamorinda area. I've grown up eating Cantonese food all over the Bay Area and this one comes the closest to what I reminder growing up with as a child. It's difficult to find a Chinese restaurant that doesn't have the authenticity of real home style Cantonese food but this place is it! Order from the special menu that's on the white board upon entering the restaurant and then the regular menu. Stopped by for a quick dinner cuz we didn't feel like cooking. Seated right away, server was friendly and efficient. We started with hot and sour soup, got the mapo tofu, shrimp and snow peas, chow fun, combo chow mein HK style, and a couple other things. Server refilled our water glasses quickly and cleared our plates as soon as we were done. Food was very good, as usual, and we felt everything tasted better when eating in vs take out. I was at Rheem Valley Shopping Center looking for another nearby business, and I decided to go in China Moon and order some favorite dishes. I was greeted as soon as I walked in, and I grabbed a booth by the window. China Moon has a spacious dining room. There's lots of booths along the wall, and several "4-seat" tables. They also have large round tables for groups. The decor is pleasant. I ordered: - Wor Won Ton Soup, Regular Size - Prawns w/ Snow Peas The Wor Won Ton Soup was excellent! Ten dumplings in a light broth, and covered with an assortment of meats, shrimp and chopped napa cabbage. This bowl of soup was loaded! A regular sized bowl is perfect for one person. Grade (5/5). The Prawns w/ Snow Peas was perfect. Good amount of prawns, covered with snow peas. Also some water chestnut and bamboo shoot. Light seasoning. Great way to add veggies to my meal. Grade (5/5). I saw some interesting dishes on their menu, and I'll have to return to try them. Dishes such as: Salted Fish Chicken & Tofu Clay Pot, Lettuce Wrapped Chicken, and Pork & Century Egg Rice Porridge. 100 Year old eggs! Free parking in shopping center lot and along the street. This is our go to Chinese restaurant, hard to find good Chinese food in Lafayette. We love getting the House special tofu and crispy fried fish with egg white corn sauce. Other dishes are good too. They are kind and customize less salt and less oil. There doesn't seem to be much msg as I'm pretty sensitive to it. The person I spoke to is from south China so I feel like they know how to make those yummy Cantonese sauces without overdoing the starch :) read more

Ordered 1. Garlic Chicken and 2. Mongolian beef. Although nice sized portions we couldn't find nor taste the garlic in Garlic chicken. Mongolian beef was waaaayyy too sweet and the waitress admitted they'd "sugared" the beef. Why, I ask? Why ruin a dish that otherwise could have been great with sugar??? Picked up war wonton soup and bbq pork fried rice tonight. As for the soup, the shrimp tasted like soap and some other chemical and had a tough texture (it was inedible), pork was tough and chewy, wontons were falling apart, vegetables were almost non-existent and broth had little to no flavor. Fried rice was ok but underwhelming with little to no flavor. Super disappointing overall, especially after spending $35. Won't be returning for this quality. read more

I have been back to China Moon several times after relocating to Concord/Walnut Creek in 2020 during the pandemic. The food here is always fresh and delicious. Love the peaceful ambience and kind servers. If this restaurant were in our neighborhood, we would go once a week! read more

Surprised moms at work & treated her for lunch. China moon is right around the corner. My mom loves eating here and my sister Megan when she worked out this way. We shared the honey walnut prawns and combo chow mien. It was enough for both of us to share both items and take some home. They give you oranges slices and fortune cookie at the end of every meal. The chow mien was well seasoned & had plenty of meat and veggies. Very filling. Walnut prawns were cooked to perfection. Not over cooked could of used more sauce though. Our family members across the country have been treated for a cantonese banquet dinner innumerable times over the 20 plus years. The food has continually been authentic and delicious. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the dishes if you're seeking comparable food found in Hong Kong and the southern part of China. The lunch specials are a particularly good bargain, prepared quickly and expertly! I love the salt and pepper dishes, be it fish or calamari, as well as the roasted chicken or duck. The owner just opened another restaurant in another Bay Area city and one of these days, I'll get to that restaurant to check it out! This is a hidden gem in a sleepy bedroom community. The food here is fantastic. My wife and I have eaten Chinese food all our lives. We know Chinese food. We've been to the best restaurants from LA, to San Francisco, to Vancouver. My wife's family operated a Chinese restaurant in Vancouver. I would put China Moon up with the best of them. We came on a quiet Saturday night. There weren't many other people in the restaurant, so service was quick and attentive. We ordered beef chow fun, beef stew clay pot, lotus root vegetable stir fry, and walnut prawns. All the dishes arrived quickly and were generously portioned. The chow fun had just the right mixture of noodles, vegetables, and beef. The beef was well-seasoned and tender. There was a perfect amount of wok hei (light charring) on everything. The lotus root stir fry was perfectly cooked and well-seasoned. The snow pea pods and lotus root slices were crunchy and flavorful. The prawns were lightly battered with a crispy coating, and perfectly cooked. The sauce was tasty, with a hint of citrus. The star of the meal was the beef stew clay pot. This was cooked in the traditional manner, with beef that included fat, membrane, and collagen as well as actual meat, which reminded me of my childhood Most restaurants prepare this dish with meat only. The traditional preparation served to us provided a much better experience with different tastes and textures that are not found in Americanized versions. If you're looking for great food, easy parking, and a low-keyed environment, a trip to Moraga is definitely worth the effort. read more

I would frequent this place as a college student so I thought it would be great to be back. After picking up my 2 year old daughter from school, I decided to bring her here. When we were seated the waitress started to yell at my daughter for touching the salt and pepper. This was my first experience getting told my daughter couldn't touch the salt and pepper. I hadn't even taken out the toys for her to play when the waitress yelled at her. I understand they don't want a mess but that was plain rude. Wish they would be nicer to kids. This is my first time grabbing food from this place since I was a little kid so I really didn't remember this place at all. I thought everything here was tasty and generously portioned. Ordered take out here a couple times already, and both times have been flawless. The food was ready when I arrived (they lock their door during the pandemic, and they say to ring the bell so they can open the door, no problem). More importantly, my 2 kids would actually eat the meat from this place. My son in particular has a thing where if he finds a weird texture in the meat, he refuses to eat it anymore, which unfortunately happens at a lot of Chinese restaurants. He does enjoy the lemon chicken here though. My daughter enjoys the lemon chicken too, which is so amazing because she typically hesitates to try anything with a sauce. The food here is good, but some items seem a bit too pricey considering what it is, especially the veggie chow mein and the broccoli with garlic sauce. Below is what we've tried so far - Veggie Chow Mein - came in one of those traditional Chinese takeout boxes, with most of the veggies on top, not thoroughly mixed in. Delicious. Eggplant and Tofu - came in the standard Styrofoam containers. The sauce was delicious, and the texture of the tofu is magnificent. A slight crisp on the outside, and very soft inside. Mmmmm!! Tomato Beef Chow Mein - came in the Styrofoam container. Well mixed, very saucy that it leaked onto the bag. Tasted of tomato-y, but the noodles were a bit soggier than we'd like. Still good though. Lemon Chicken - chunks of chicken breaded, fried, and coated in lemon sauce. My kids gave! Black Bean Chicken - a lot of peppers and onions as expected, not bad, but not our fave. Broccoli with garlic sauce - pretty standard broccoli dish, but not quite $13 worth for what it is. Doesn't seem much in there in the takeout box. Overall, we'd order again! Good stuff. read more

We have enjoyed many meals at China Moon many times, but tonight's dinner was horrible...couldn't even eat most of it. The Lemon Scallops are supposedly one of the Chef's Specialties...they were not edible, and they were expensive. The gooey sickly sweet "lemon" sauce on them was horrible, and the breaded/fried scallops were soggy. The Beef chow mein, was just passable. There were no bean sprouts...it was entirely heavy noodles, a bit of onion, and beef. The other dish we ordered was BBQ pork with snow peas. It was ok, but snow peas were way overcooked. My dad has been coming here for very very long time, and brought me multiple times. I'm so happy that this place survived covid. They offer take out and indoor dine in now. You have to ring a bell and they'll open the door for you. I'm not sure why? But my guess is due to a lot of Asians are being targeted as of now so for their safety. But anyway, it's easy access. Service: Not the best but they do their job and at the end of the day, I'm happy. Food: THE BEST Chinese restaurant. It's about 20-25min drive for me but it's definitely worth the drive. Their egg roll are to die for. It's a must try. Their veggie in the egg roll (especially the cabbage) is very fresh and not too oily. I love that most of the dishes are not oily, Chinese food is definitely quite heavy and very oily but compare to any other restaurant, this place serves a good quality taste and in food! It's not as oily either. Very flavorful as well as all the vegetable, meat is fresh. When I chew on the meat, I can still taste the flavor of the dish which I like, instead of just tasting the meat itself. Fried rice here is not bland either. It's usually bland but each meat is seasoned very well and it's not salty. My dad loves his Mongolian beef; The fried noodles on the bottom goes so well with the taste and meat. The veggie isn't too over cook, which we both love. I personally love the black mushroom with chicken. There's so many different type of vegetables in the dish but it's not heavy! The best peking duck we've had compared to many we've tried in the East Bay. The family works super hard and I'm so glad they are still running this restaurant. Ambinance is nicer than most Chinese restaurants i've been to and it's very spacious. FLY IN FOOD! I wish chinese restaurants did not have this rep., but this is my third chinese restaurant where I found a fly in my food. The other two places that would understand their fault and refund the whole meal. They just refunded the dumplings (where the black fly was obviously on the white dumpling once I removed the top dumpling) and did not offer to remake the food (without flys). A stranger passing by also told me of the poor service here and to check out Chef Chao's around the corner. Still have not tried it, but Golden Palace is great!
