Many years ago I used to go to the Danville sideboard quite frequently, so I was very excited when some friends asked if we wanted to go to the Lafayette location with them. The consistency between locations is incredible, they had so much of the same feel. I loved the patio and that you could sit across on the lawn if you wanted. They even have lawn chairs for you to borrow. The menu is limited but good. I was surprised they didn't have a sav blanc, but the sangrias were delicious. I got a vegan ceasar which was great, but probably too much dressing. My fiancé got a pork quesadilla that he absolutely loved. He was a very very big fan of the salad on top and said it played a huge role in making the dish cohesive and feel much lighter. I also tried the corn pasta which was delicious. I've never had a bad meal at Sideboard! The breakfast pudding with asparagus and the side salad with its light vinaigrette is absolutely delicious. The breakfast mac & cheese with bacon is another favorite and always hits the spot. And don't even get me started on the desserts, they're next level. I also love the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. You order at the counter, grab a table, help yourself to water, and the friendly staff brings your food right to you. 3 friends went seeking a nice lunch at a place where we could visit and catch up before hitting the traffic back to the City. All ordered salads, all different, all very nice, but hardly unique. Ordered cold lemonades too, but they were nothing but a squeeze of lemon in water- not impressed. Having not been here in years, I found it to be a different and disappointing experience. We had to flag down a person to clean the table, which was still sticky when we sat down. Not rude service but could hardly be considered friendly either. The one thing that annoyed me the most was clearing an individuals dishes while the others were still eating. Plenty of empty tables so what's the rush? Given the cost, plus tip, Sideboard was nothing special. Plenty of other solid choices in the Lamorinda area. read more

We had such a lovely dinner at sideboard tonight. I usually go to sideboard for lunch, but I met a friend for dinner and it was just delicious. There was a really cool vibe because it wasn't as crowded and frantic as it usually isn't lunchtime we had the bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado sandwich and it was so good. We had a cosmopolitan citrus so yummy. The bruschetta was delicious. Still latte was OK and the chocolate pudding was amazing. Didn't know there was a Sideboard in Lafayette! Had to try it. Same menu, same pastries and baked goods, same food plating, and same ambience as Danville. What I didn't like is that no one comes out to check any outdoor tables that need to be cleared. I went in and asked a young man behind the counter if someone could buss a couple tables we were hoping to sit at. He didn't smile. He said he'd do it for us. Well, he never came out. I found another older gentleman if he could clear out some tables. He happily obliged. With a smile! And said, "I will do that right now." While we were eating, it was this same man who cleared tables. He's the best! Friendly and always smiling. Meanwhile, the first young man I asked originally, walked past dirty tables. He walked by a dirty table twice. Anyway... we ordered: Flat Iron Steak Sandwich - flavorful and delicious Avocado Toast - I love that the avocado is seasoned. I wish the bread was a little more toasted and that the arugula was seasoned or drizzled with olive oil. SB Cheddar Burger - I love that their patty was well-seasoned bursting with flavor! I visited Sideboard recently and had a bit of a mixed experience regarding the logistics. The food itself was delicious the Gravlox Eggs Benedict was the standout, and you absolutely cannot leave without trying the Snickerdoodle cookie. It was fantastic! The latte was okay, but the food definitely took center stage. The staff were very friendly and well-intentioned, but the communication was lacking. Our entire group found the ordering process to be quite confusing. It wasn't immediately clear where to go or how the flow worked, which took away a bit from the otherwise great vibe. 4++ Coffee/ cafe spot that has a kitchen so they serve up food items (mostly breakfast and/or lunch) that they prepare there as well in addition to freshly baked goods that you can purchase at the counter. The folks taking your order and bringing your food items are friendly and helpful here. The vibe is kind of a cozy countryside cafe. I've been to the Danville location a few times and it's very similar. I tend to only go around the holidays because that's when I'm in town and meet up with friends. I only ordered a few pastries and a large French drip coffee to share this past visit. I would like to comeback and try out more of the menu, but we had a large group and just wanted to make it as easy as possible. The pastries that are baked fresh and the coffee were both really good for what it's worth. Always a really convenient choice with lots of food and beverage options that please larger groups with varying preferences. This area has one way streets and odd side streets to get through and park at this location. I think it gets easier as you get familiar with the area. Whether I'm there for a chai and a pastry, or a full meal, the line moves quickly and usually can find a spot to sit at. Seating is first come first serve but there is an option to eat at the park! The English muffin was offensively delicious. It is quite possibly the best one I've ever had in my life oversize. Wish muffin, Krispy exterior yet so ever slightly chewy it was Fantastic. I usually go to the Danville location but Sideboard is always consistently good. Today, I had brunch plans at 10:30 am on a Sunday and there was only one person in line! There was a special on the menu which was a softshell crab sandwich. It was pan fried with a cornmeal coating and quite tasty. I also shared this with a friend along with a bacon scramble. We sat on the deck and it was great given the warm weather. They have lawn chairs to be able to sit in the park in front of the restaurant along with yard games. When we left around 11:30 there was a long line. Parking is hard to find directly in front of the restaurant but there is plenty of street parking nearby that is free on Sunday! read more

This place has a great atmosphere! They even have a bunch of lawn chairs and kids game that you can take onto the lawn right across the street for a picnic! Everything I've eaten here has been delicious - my favorites are the tuna melt, chilaquiles, and carrot cake but looking forward to trying a lot more! The Thai salad was a little over dressed and the bread on the BLT was good but should've been toasted. You order at the counter, it's free for all seating, and then they deliver the food to your table. Met friends here for dinner. Lots of seatings inside and on the front patio. You can also pick up some picnic chairs and take it to the park across the street. Street parking has meters, if you park two blocks away, there's free parking without meters. We ordered at the register and they give you a marker to sit on your table. You have to grab your own water, glasses, plates, napkins, and flatware from the sideboard. The food was fine. The brussels sprouts and lemon aïoli was good. The salads were fine. Sideboard is such a lovely establishment, it's a shame to write a 3 star review. I've been coming for a few years and today was disappointing. For a total bill of close to $30 (with no beverage!) the experience was less than what it's been in the past. For an order-at-the-counter, "get your own everything" including water, silverware and salt, and now smaller and smaller portion sizes, it seems incredibly expensive for what you get. The breakfast pudding in particular was significantly smaller than I remember, and the plate was mostly a mixed green salad. For $20. If you want a starch you have to order separately for another $8-10. I know restaurants are struggling these days and looking forward to prices coming down and/or portions going up maybe once the St of Hormuz is open. read more

I have passed by this place so many times and never noticed it. We got a breakfast sandwich, avocado toast, and a brownie. The brownie was delicious, the breakfast sandwich was good, and the avocado toast could use a little seasoning. We went on a Saturday and it was quite busy, but the vibe and ambiance was nice. What a gem in Lafayette! We stumbled upon Sideboard in between water polo games this past Sunday and it was the perfect way to fuel up. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious -- the egg and bacon scramble was hearty and satisfying, the homemade french toast was on another level, and we couldn't leave without trying a fresh baked cookie (no regrets!). This was my first time visiting Sideboard, and I will definitely be returning! The place itself is super cute, with a rustic/quaint feeling. I got a raspberry lemonade and a veggie burger with fries, all of which were delicious. The raspberry lemonade tasted super fresh and not overly sweet, and the burger itself was really tasty. I was willing to forgive their consistently rude baristas and pretentiously flavored breads and muffins (strawberry and thyme? No was asked for that! And not even remotely better than a normal flavor). But they leave out RANCID CREAM for their customers! Do you know why that doesn't usually happen? Because restaurants have systems in place for ensuring their food is kept safe for human consumption. Sideboard apparently does not have such systems. Been on the fence about this place for a while, mostly because it's conveniently located. But there are much better places less than a block a way. I won't be back. read more

I've been meaning to try this place for a long time, and finally got the chance. First, the good: -The staff was nice. -Good amount of plant-based offerings, and options that can be customized to be vegetarian/vegan. Great to see! Their veggie burger is made out of black beans, oatmeal, and other clean ingredients instead of the chemical-laden 'impossible' patty that many places use. -The menu states they use 'natural, local, organic and sustainable whenever possible'. A+ -Ample seating, both indoors and on the patio. -Dog-friendly. Lots of cute dogs to watch on the patio. -Good, upbeat music. What needs improvement: -The busy and strange 'decor' and the deer heads on the wall (gross). -There is a corner where we sat, with a shoulder-level shelf with pointed corners that is a real safety hazard (see pic). It would be very easy to hit the shelf with your head getting up. This seems like an accident waiting to happen, and the shelf should be removed. -No signage out front; hard to identify the place. -The signs all over the place policing laptop use to 15 minutes or less unless seated at a communal table or at the counter, despite there being ample seating. This rubs me the wrong way and doesn't feel hospitable. My partner and I shared the bacon scramble which was tasty but a little too rich for me. I enjoyed my iced mocha. The menu is kind of all over the place, but at least there is something for every palate. May return, but wouldn't go out of my way to do so. read more

I was pleasantly surprised at how efficient this restaurant is on a Sunday during peak brunch time. 1. order at the counter- and get a number before sitting down and saving seats. Theres a variety of indoor, patio, and picnic options. if you choose to picnic there is a large grassy area across from the restaurant and they give you a word on a wooden stick to mark your spot and deliver your food to you. 2. the food and drinks here are worth the price- $20+ dollars for a beet salad and worth every penny. I get the beet salad every time because it is perfect! they have a super fancy hot chocolate but I am hooked on their house made chai tea latte. 3. Location is great with lots of parking close by. we came after a beautiful walk at the Lafayette Reservoir. How cute is this spot! I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while now and while in the area for a meeting, was looking for a quick stop-in to grab a bite and maybe a little treat..huge win! I ordered the Thai Chicken Salad, the Pea Soup (tasted just like the way my dad makes it), and a snickerdoodle for the drive home. While I was standing in line other yummy plates I saw coming out were the Chicken Enchiladas, the open-faced Tuna Melt which seems like a fan favorite, and the SB Cheddar Burger. To note, there is also a plant-based menu with a Fiesta Bowl, Wild Mushroom Enchiladas, a Vegan Caesar, and more. Food was fresh, hearty, and definitely feel-good. I already had my share of coffee for the day, but the coffee bar and elevated drink menu is fun. I love the true local, rustic feel as though you're having friends/family come over to your home. For the worker bees, I appreciate the free WiFi for patrons and smaller tables/window seating with outlets. There really is a vibe for any type of traveler and very kid-friendly too. I read that a Sideboard was where Grandma kept everything for the family to set the table, and that is a special staple piece that still holds true for the restaurant and where guests can grab their forks, knives, and what have you. Flavored, complimentary (and cold) water also awaits you on the sideboard. Such a fun fact/feature that wraps this spot together in a bow. Would love to come back if/when in the area again to try the Chicken Pot Pie and maybe a few other tasty dessert treats :) There is parking out front (watch your meters!) and outdoor seating. I love this restaurant. I've been here more than 5 times and every experience has left me full, feeling good, and that my money was well spent. Their ingredients are fresh and organic, their food is delicious, and they are always switching the menu. One of my favorites (which is seasonal) are the green enchiladas. My daughter loves the grilled cheese, the Mac and cheese, and the bean burritos from the kids menu. The service is fast considering how delicious their food is. Their restaurant is designed for inside dining, picnics, and they have a shaded terrace. Our picnic was so amazing. They gave us a really cool stake that you could drive into the grass to signal your order. Their servers deliver your food to the grass with cute to-go boxes in a basket. It was adorable and relaxing. They have picnic blankets, chairs, and umbrellas for your picnic. We brought a card game and the kids ran around with our doggies. 2.5 but rounding up Hhhmmmmm....well you know it might not be the best when i start a review with "Hhhmmmm". Best part was the coffee and coffee mug. I like the 50's/60's diner style mugs. Takes me back to when I was a kid when I would get a cup of coffee in the morning at this diner (Mable's in Benicia) before working in my dad's factory. So back to the restaurant. I had the bacon scramble, glass of Scarffenberger and coffee. My partner ordered a Momo and a mocha and shared some of my eggs. Well they ran out of orange juice so she had a peach belini. How do you run out of OJ when Safeway and Whole Foods is almost across the street. Bacon scramble was good but that's all there is. As my partner says, "What, no carbos?". The menu has a little something for everybody. Sometimes this is good and sometimes not. In this case not really feeling it. It just seems like an eclectic mess. There are nice items here and there and plant based items for those that do that. (Not me). There are Thai, Vietnamese, down home American, and New Orleans offerings sprinkled amongst the various items. There are creepy dolls and dollheads with 3 faces scattered around as well as other weird stuff. The table we sat at was straight out of the 1950's with chrome legs and plastic yellow top. There are other kinds of tables including big round wooden tables, small square tables, little round tables for two and a whole collection of random chairs. Seriously, i think they drove around and found stuff on the sidewalk being tossed when they furnished the place. There is a nice covered front porch area that could be very relaxing but on a busy day is way too crowded and annoying with people bumping into you and chairs colliding. We tried sitting there and realized it wasn't going to work. This place has a weird vibe to it. I can't quite determine what it is but it's definitely there. Not sure if it they tried to make it a trendy place back in the day for the bougie Lafayette population and it got away from them, or what. There are signs posted warning the patrons if you are working on a laptop you need to sit at the community table or the counter. The ladies were eyeballing us and I thought we could be moved any minute since we were on our mini laptops (cell phones). Also, a sign outside for the establishment would be good.
