Yesterday December 24th 2029 was my 86 year olds mothers birthday. My daughter arranged to have Uncle Yu's food delivered to her through a delivery service at noon to be delivered by 6:00pm. This never happened the delivery service was told Uncle Yu's at 6:00pm was not honoring their food to be delivered through any delivery service! Uncle Yu's is okay. One of the better options for Chinese food in the Lamorinda area. But, if you're craving quality Chinese, you're better off making the trek to Chinatown. Uncle Yu's offers your usual Chinese fare. So far we've tried: egg rolls, potstickers, hot and sour soup, mu shu vegetable, vegetable fried rice, and chicken chow mein. Everything was alright. Had a wonderful 90th birthday party here for my mom in the private room! The food was plentiful and wonderful, served family style with a big variety of dishes. The decor in the room was elegant yet understated, so is perfect for adding a few decorations to personalize your party. I was also impressed at how many waitstaff assisted with the serving of the food, and cleaning up. They made everything run seamlessly. And the whole thing was far more reasonable than I expected, especially in light of the quality and amount of food, and excellent service. We had 40 guests, the room can hold 60. This was the first of the Uncle Yu's I ever tried some 9 or 10 years ago when I was visiting with some friends from Phoenix. Since the location in San Ramon is closer to the house, that is where we go as it is hands down the best Chinese food in the area. Last night, we happened to be picking the daughter up in Lafayette after our cooking class and decided to just stop in for an early dinner. The place was packed full of large parties at 5:20 on a Sunday evening. The potstickers were perfect as was the Mushu(sp?) pork but our shrimp dish was a little disappointing and we wouldn't order again at either location. Even with how busy the restaurant was, service was efficient and the food was great. We will be back but probably the SR location. read more

I think living in the bay area has given me and interesting outlook on food. Here we champion our local produce, seek organic options and value all things authentic. And in many cases that's great! Rustic brick oven pizza and tacos - sans Ortega - are two very special treats. Going back to those tacos from a box or cheap fast pizza is such a big no-no. Yet for some reason we still tolerate Americanized Chinese food. It's almost as if it's a cuisine in and of itself. If so, I like it! I always hope there's a place in my heart for the sticky-sweet chunks of meat, vegetables encased in crunchy rolls, and soups chock full of briny noodles. Uncle Yu met my expectations pretty well. Maaaaaan. As much as I love you, Uncle Yu, I will have to downgrade your restaurant by one star. Why, you ask? Because I've been looking at this place through rose-colored lenses for years. Yes, the food is decent, as is the atmosphere. It still makes for a pretty cool date night place, but that's kind of where it ends... The decor is admittedly sort of lack-luster, and the servers never look very happy. For these reasons, I find this place undeserving of the five stars previously given. Americanized but excellent. That's my review in a sentence. Read on for the details. I grew up in Lafayette and this has been my family's go-to Chinese restaurant for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid my mom would bring home wonton soup from Uncle Yu's if someone in my family was sick. My family also developed a strange tradition of going to Uncle Yu's on Christmas Eve which is apparently not such a novel idea after all because that place is PACKED on Christmas Eve. Although I'll admit that I have an emotional tie to this restaurant, as an adult it is possible for me to judge it objectively. I've also tried just about every dish on their menu so I'll give a few recommendations. Basically Uncle Yu's is an upscale Americanized Chinese restaurant. It isn't particularly authentic and some of the dishes are a little on the bland side. However what they do they do well. It's in Lafayette so you'll be paying a bit more that you might elsewhere. Despite these criticisms, Uncle Yu's is a good restaurant that uses quality ingredients and is remarkable consistent. The food is never greasy (most notably the potstickers which are excellent) and they don't over-use corn starch like some chinese restaurants do. Another thing I love about Uncle Yu's is that fried items are never over-battered. Although it's a little on the expensive side (not too bad) this restaurant never tries to nickel and dime you, dishes that promise certain ingredients are always fulfilled generously ie: lots of cashews in cashew chicken, lots of shrimp in whatever shrimp dish etc... Try for sure... Wonton Soup or Sizzling Rice Soup: Uncle Yu's uses a gorgeous clear consume broth for the base in these soups. I have no idea how long it takes to produce that clarity but this broth is flavorful and not too salty. There's only one restaurant I've ever eaten wonton soup at where the broth stole the show. On that point however, I should note that the wonton filling is a bit dull. Sweet & Sour Pork: Not over-battered, loaded with big chunks of pork, veggies and pineapple. Best I've ever had. Prawns with Honeyed Walnuts: Big, lightly crispy prawns. Very fresh. Peking Spareribs: Similar to the Pork mentioned above in that it is very lightly battered, dusted really. Really great sweet, tangy sauce to go with it that isn't too syrupy. Avoid Egg rolls: This is the only dish that I really think is sub-par. They're just deep fried cabbage tubes. I listed a few dishes I think they excel at but Uncle Yu's does everything well. The noodles are good, mongolian beef is good, the various fish veggie dishes are good too. Overall this is just a solid restaurant that won't disappoint. read more

Uncle Yu's is ok but certainly not worth a detour. I was there yesterday with a large group. The menu had been pre-ordered but the food was very slow coming out and we were HUNGRY! The food tasted fresh but not particularly flavorful, so nothing stands out as worth reporting on. A somewhat classier Chinese restaurant with multiple locations that has more flair than a standard hole in the wall. Unfortunately, the differences end there. The quality of meat and unique flavors leave a lot to be desired. Any chicken dish is dark end cuts. No white meat even when not breaded and gristle is common. If you would prefer to enjoy your meal I would go elsewhere. I had heard great things about Uncle Yu's so I came here with my family one Saturday night. We found out afterward that they had changed management. I really wish we'd known that going in. The food was terrible! We got shrimp fried rice, shrimp chow mein, a seafood platter and Mongolian beef. The shrimp had no flavor. The seafood as a whole had no flavor. The rice was terrible. The chow mein was awful. And the Mongolian beef was difficult to eat because it was so bad. We left about half of the food untouched. On top of that the service was very slow and the place wasn't even that full. And it was more expensive than the average chinese place. There is not much more that I can say. Just save yourself a miserable time and look elsewhere. read more

We ended up here because our favorite spot in Lafayette was Mangia because of the nostalgia of having pizza, bear and wine after softball. So here we go.Barely 3 stars IMO largely because we found their dishes very underwhelming and under flavored. There is nothing special going on with their food. For example the orange chicken that we ordered only had a very faint taste of orange to it. You wouldn't know what it was if it was served to you. The scallop sauce actually tasted more like an orange sauce even though it's not advertised as such. So our takeaway is this, if you like your Chinese food more towards the bland side you'll like it otherwise I'm quite certain there's better Chinese food close by. read more

This is the first place I ever had Chinese food. It's safe to say my taste buds and ability to distinguish what is good and bad when it comes to Chinese cuisine was formed as a result of eating here. It's been over twenty years and I still love going to Uncle Yu's. For the East Bay (at least east of the Caldecott Tunnel), it's the best. The service is very friendly and always attentive, they give a nice welcoming greeting when we come in, and the food is very consistent at this location--I've heard the d'ville location can vary, but this one keeps it real. The wine list is extensive, the pot stickers, crab puffs, Ko-Teh (spelling?) beef skewers, and won-ton soup are great apps. They reflect quality ingredients and the skilled craftsmanship in the kitchen. For main courses, my No.1 favorite is beef chow fun, every time, without fail, I order this dish and it rocks my pants off. The meats, fish, and vegetables are high grade, unlike many other Chinese restaurants that I've been to--Chinatown, I'm looking at you. Sure, it may not be as authentic as some of the "food" in Chinatown, but you know what you're eating and there's comfort in that. If you're looking for very good, fairly upscale Chinese food in a tranquil and friendly environment, go to Uncle Yu's. read more

Hadn't ordered take-out from here since last year, but had a sudden craving for Uncle Yu's. Our order was ready on time and correct, everything we ordered was exactly the same as pre-Covid. I have to give them props on the succulent, properly sliced beef (not chewy or stringy) in the asparagus beef; it's been the same consistent quality all the years I've been ordering from them! Everything was delicious: kung pao chicken, sweet and sour tofu, braised eggplant. I have to give them credit for consistency during these difficult times. Every year for the lunar new year's eve we meet with my parents, sister's family, and a ton of friends at Chinatown SF to celebrate and light off firecrackers. This year we had plans to do the same thing, but found ourselves in the hospital instead. Our family lost a very special person on the morning of the Lunar New Year and we were all exhausted from days of sadness - nobody had eaten a thing. After hours of planning at a Oakmont Memorial Park, 9 of us met at Uncle Yu's around dinner time, and found a full house! We asked for a tale for 9, and they asked if we had a reservation. Ohhhh yeah, the New Year! We luckily were sat at the only open table within minutes and began hungrily staring at their menu. Before long, chow mein, chow fun, steamed rice, honey walnut prawns, Mongolian chicken, peking chicken, garlic prawns, orange chicken and a couple other dishes... found their way to our table. We finished almost every plate - all sharing and taking turns eating through our tears. The food was outstanding. Service was great too - especially for how full they were that night. This place is not a typical chinese restaurant, as you can tell by the white tablecloth, dim lighting, and some asian fusion entrees and italian desserts in the menu.. We ordered eggplant w/ garlic sauce, orange roughy w/ black bean sauce, and roasted chicken.. the food was better than expected, but a little pricier than what we would get in downtown Mountain View. Not only were we the only asians in the restaurant.. we also looked around and noticed that everyone else was using chopsticks, and they never brought out the chopsticks for us! We shared the cappucino tartufo w/ heart of espresso for dessert, and it was actually better than the entrees. I would not go out of my way to dine here but it did feel like I was on vacation somewhere.. the company and ambience itself was well worth the 1 hour drive from Palo Alto. read more

When Uncle Yu's opened this 1st restaurant in their 3 restaurant chain, I lived nearby and would eat there all the time. The food was so good, that I probably brought at least 100 different people there to try their 5 star food. They would make the potstickers to order, and it would take at least 10-15 minutes for them to serve them. Soon the restaurant was so popular, it was hard to get a table on Friday or Saturday night. It's been years since I've been able to eat there; so, when I happened to be in the area, I thought I'd order some food to go. Sadly, the former 5 star food, is no longer the case. Here's what we ordered. Pork Potstickers - $6.95 - OK, the dough was pretty thick. I did like the fact that they supplied all the sauces (Chile, Vinegar, Sweet & Sour, Mustard) with my order. BBQ Pork Spareribs - $7.95 - OK, but not much meat on the bone. Egg Rolls - $6.50 - OK Hot & Sour Soup - $5.95 - This used to be one of my favorite Hot & Sour Soups in the whole Bay Area. Now it's just OK, and a bit too watery. Yu Shiang Eggplant - $9.00 - Good Combination Chow Mein - $8.95 - Very Poor. The Shrimp were old, and there were hardly any vegetables in the chow mein. For the most part, whenever I visit one of my old favorite restaurants, the quality of the food is just as I remembered. Unfortunately, this is not the case at this location. Perhaps the owner should focus more attention on this site, and hold the Chef to a higher standard. After all, this was their first restaurant. It seems like there is a conscious effort to skimp on the ingredients. I hope the next time I try it, the food will be much better. read more

Best Chinese food I have ever eaten...and I've eaten a LOT of Chinese. It's one of my favorite foods. Ambiance is nice. Not the fanciest, but very clean and classy for a place you can get a good meal for ten bucks. We called our order ahead just a few minutes before we got there. When we got there, our table was waiting, soup and all. Table had real napkins instead of paper. Water glass and utensils were clean. Ordered the 3 way Kung Po lunch special. The complimentary hot & sour soup was actually flavorful and substantial even for a small bowl. It was perfect. Didn't know hot & sour soup can taste like that. Service is very good. Very attentive, but not so much that they're bugging you. What's funny is that they didn't say anything but they were able to service us just fine without using words. Nice sized portions. I expected a little more, but then I realized with the first bite it was definitely quality over quantity. The food was superb and obviously fresh. Vegetables cooked perfectly. Noodles cooked perfectly. Meat was very tender, even the beef. Even the water was delicious! No, really. Both my friends agreed lol Will definitely visit again. read more

Fresh, hot, non greasy, Chinese food. Uncle Yu's is the epitome of elegant Chinese dining without putting a dent in your budget. Family style eats ordered: Lemon chicken, chow mein, sweet and sour chicken, eggplant, crab puffs, and hot and sour soup. All marvelous in the sense that you don't get salt withdrawals or grease bloats. We all know what those things can entail for our insides. What I liked about this place is it's subtle attention to customer service: Refills without asking, clearing off tables when noticed, asking if we'd like anything else, check ready to go after meal is over. It is the little things mixed with a distinct menu of memorable flavors that will keep this a place to come to in the future. They have been awarded a few times, as one of the best in the east bay and I am continuously reminded why every time I visit. This restaurant is amazing!!!! And, as much as I hate to say it, this place is far better than any Chinese restaurant I've dined at in San Francisco! As others have mentioned, the ingredients are extremely fresh, the restaurant is exceptionally clean and aesthetically pleasing, and the service is prompt and attentive. So far my favorite entree is the lemon chicken, and I love that the chicken is so tender and the skin so crispy. The lemongrass glaze is done to perfection, and the vegetables are not cooked to complete mush as other Chinese restaurants sometimes do. Likewise, the chow mein is delicious, and the light garlic seasoning fantastic. My second runner up is the Szechuan chicken, but it would definitely be better if the restaurant used real Szechuan peppercorns. It's unfortunate that they're banned in the U.S.; apparently the peppercorns have a component that kills our citrus trees. That aside, I would LOVE to import Uncle Yu's into my side of Nob Hill!! But, I guess I will just have to visit my aunt in Lafayette more often! :) read more

This place is dark inside. Turning on lights during dinner is either forbidden or against their religion. Everything is candlelight. In fact, they will go out of their way to lean over and light the votive and interrupt you while you're talking. Now that's dedication. They're either awkwardly hovering over your table or lurching in the darkness and if you even glance at them, they will come over your table. So that Old School service is appreciated but a little overkill. There's just a small handful of Chinese restaurants in the area that cats dare walk past or have passed their health code inspection... so it's really hard to find a good one. "Uncle Yu's" is a little more upscale than most. It's nicer, cleaner and well kept. No paper napkins here. Fabric. Mmm.. Fancy. The place is a little more expensive, but you know old adage; "You get what you pay for. For a starter, get the Fried Won Tons with sweet-n-sour sauce. That's a good start. Order the General Tsou's Chicken and the Chicken Chow Mein, but have them make both dishes with white meat. read more

I've only been here one time and was very impressed with the service. We continuously had the staff hovering around us to make sure that we had everything we needed. The wine list here is incredible and fortunately for me, I was with a group who knew their wine and more importantly, enjoyed their wine. The food was ok. We started off with appetizers, (calamari, pot stickers and a crabmeat puff), all were tasty. How can you go wrong with crabmeat and cheese that are deep fried ? We also went with the sizzling rice soup which in my limited experience, I've had better. The dinner itself was alright. We ended up ordering many different items and going family style for the meal. Me, being the bland kind of guy that I am took a liking to the chicken with snow peas. I know there is a lot of bravado with regards to Uncle Yu's. I had heard so much abt Uncle Yu's so when I started working in Lafayette I decided to try it out. Needless to say I was very disappointed. I got the lunch order of Sesame Chicken. We've done takeouts since dining in four years ago. Out of the blue, we decided to dine in and we truly enjoyed the entrees that we ordered and the service. Service seems a bit formal as the servers do deliver the food and take our orders, however, it lacked a trifle of friendliness and a smile. This restaurant has been in a business for a number of years. With a nice clean restaurant with white tablecloths and napkins, can you replace some of your worn out dishes with white, fresh looking plates and tea cups. Granted they are not chipped, but they sure do look worn out lacking the crisp white shining color that I would expect. Instead they are dingy looking with gray spots from re-washing so many times. BTW, the portions are generous as we had enough to enjoy the next day. read more

Uncle Yu's has been our go to Chinese in the Diablo Valley for years. This is my first review for them, but not my first visit. The reason we kept coming back to Uncle Yu's were the DETAILS. Good take out is only partially about the food, it's also in the details and how the food is set up for take out. This is the third time Uncle Yu's has missed out on including all of the sauces one expects for good Chinese take out. The way I was herded in and out of pick up for take out was not good. I specifically asked for particular sauces and I was reassured "it's all in there". It wasn't and this wasn't the first time it had happened and the third time they got it wrong. Yes I will still keep coming back, but each time this happens, I like them a little less. read more

Upon entering the business, I was reprimanded by the rude lady at the front desk who told me that I wasn't supposed come in through the rear entrance. The upper rear parking lot leads to the rear entrance. I asked some workers that were outside if it was OK to enter through the rear which they said yes, maybe because they didn't speak English, but that's OK. I was looking for some gau gee, a type of eggroll/wonton only found in Hawaii. The lady knew what I was talking about and put in my order. I was assuming that it was going to be some fried wontons with pork which is on their menu. My order was ready, and I asked the lady for some hot mustard. She proceeded to tell me that you don't eat it that way, I said we do in Hawaii. She reluctantly gave me two little cups of hot mustard. I asked her if it was OK to leave the same way I came in, said yes but, next time come through the front. Guess what there will not be a next time because when I got home, she put in two orders of potstickers, which I hate. And guess what their potstickers suck. Haven't tried the rest of their food, but if their potstickers are any indication of what their food taste like, stay away from this yucky and mean lady place. read more

The service is always good and there really isn't a bad item on the menu.
