Stopped by the Boston location after hearing so much about Uncle Tetsu's famous Japanese cheesecake. There was a short wait since they bake the cheesecakes fresh in batches, but it moved pretty quickly. The Original Japanese Cheesecake was warm, soft, and definitely lived up to its signature "jiggle." It's very different from a traditional cheesecake--much lighter, fluffier, and less sweet, almost like a cross between a soufflé and a sponge cake. If you're expecting a rich New York-style cheesecake, this isn't that. Personally, I enjoyed how light it was, and it didn't leave me feeling overly full. The staff was friendly, and the shop was clean and well organized. My only suggestion would be to have a few more seating options since it's mostly grab-and-go. I visited this place on a Sunday morning . When I walked in, there was no staff present and I had to wait a few minutes before someone came to assist me. I ordered an Ube cheesecake and repeated my order as it seemed there might have been some miscommunication. I was in a bit of a rush due to limited parking and unfortunately didn't check my bag before leaving. When I got home, I realized I had been given a different cheesecake than what I ordered. I decided to keep it rather than return, as going back to Chinatown wasn't convenient at the time. The cheesecake itself was also disappointing in texture and freshness--it felt quite soggy and not as fresh as expected. Tried this place out, first time trying Japanese Cheesecake. I was expecting what I have had before in the sense of cheesecake but learned it's different. This is more of a cake consistency with a very mild cheese flavor. The consistency reminded me of angel food cake. Although I think it was prepared well it wasn't my favorite dessert ever. Not so sure how to rate this place bc I came here on a late Saturday evening after eating at Mikiya next door. I wanted the matcha cheesecake but he quickly replied, "matcha sold out!" I should've just left but I felt obligated to make a purchase. I ordered the ube and original and it was quickly bagged and handed over. They must make a bunch a refrigerate it. I asked him how long is it good for and he said three days in the fridge. I tried a piece of each the next day at our hotel. It appeared a bit shriveled and soggy. So I've had that Japanese cheesecake prior to this visit and yes, it was. It was good cheese cheesecake. however, on this visit I just wanted to taste they didn't have any slices available. Only $15 cheesecakes I would have splurged for one, but I know I would've eaten the entire cheesecake so I decided to try their cheese tart. For only four dollars I thought that would be a great dessert as I've just eaten a huge meal. so I also decided to get one of their tees. I got a lychee oolong. I've never tried that tea before on the wall. There's a picture of a bottle with a screw cap so I assumed I could take a sip and take the rest home. To my surprise, it was just like a can of Pepsi. I had open it and it's not resealable so that means I would've had a drink the whole container, which was not my plan. Anyways long story short I got in my car. I popped open the top of the tea for a sealed unit. They filled it halfway with ice so basically I got a half of a plastic can of tea totally disgraceful. For dollars and $.95 getting a half a tea is not the correct way to charge your customer. As far as the taste of the tea, the lychee was very prominent, but it was overly sweet. Between all that ice and the extra sweetness on top of the flavor, I definitely wouldn't order another or I would say no ice.. I think it would taste really great with ice. Let's talk about my cheese tot you know kudos for trying to give me a warm I got to my car. I opened up the bag. I reached to grab the tot and it was cream from the top all over the inside of the bag, so basically I got to eat a half tart. The center was so runny. It was like it wasn't set yet.. and I lost half of my filling in the bag. As I sat in my car and ate my half of tart in my overly sweet iced tea that I couldn't seal the rest up kind of a waste of a trip for me today.. do you know the kicker is that the young man that was behind the counter? he was particularly rude. He asked me to sign for my card so I took my finger and tried to sign on the machine. It didn't work. He was watching me. He asked me to sign again. I did it a second time it didn't work. He looks at me and he's like can you sign? I said, I just signed twice your machines not excepting it. I shrugged my shoulders. He pushed the button on his machine and handed me my receipt he handed it to me with an attitude and a face smirk. They definitely will not go there again.. the cheesecake is good, but it's not worth the effort to be treated rudely. When we walked in, the first thing the guy said to us was "What you want?" I was really taken aback by that but I ordered the cheesecake tarts anyways because they were on sale. Aside from that, the guy didn't look at us or speak to us at all during the encounter and he just asked us to pay. Not a fan of this location. Located in Boston Chinatown, so I expected a tiny takeout spot with limited street parking or get here by MBTA. Go downstairs and you will see a small display. Compare to other Uncle Tetsu locations I've been to, this has gotten to be the worst. Cheesecakes are not the same size. Taste and textures lacks, when compare to other locations. However, this is the one and only Uncle Tetsu in Massachusetts so how does one compare? As you can see from my photos, their matcha cheesecake is significantly smaller than their original. I purchased 4 cheesecakes from this locations on the same day to give out. I have purchased many other cheesecakes at other locations in other states. Their egg tarts are more on the eggy side. It's fine but not to my personal liking. Maybe I was craving for a typical Hong Kong style dahn-tart. Just disappointed in their cheesecakes. Uncle Tetsu is a tiny, takeout-only spot. The two times I visited, there was just one employee working, and she was hustling to keep everything moving smoothly which I can appreciate. Location is a bit hidden but not hard to miss. To get to the shop, you need to go down some steps, so not accessible friendly. Spot was clean and offers it simple menu of cakes, tarts, and tofu pudding. There is no seating and had a small ordering section for to-go. Street parking is something to be mindful of because Chinatown is a hassle. Ordered some and kept in the fridge since we were already full from dinner but we really wanted to make sure we grabbed some easy tarts. They hold up very well in the fridge. The TARTS are just mini cheese cakes! Delicious and creamy! The chocolate tart was good and wasn't overly overpowering in chocolate and was perfectly subtle. We just got their cheese tart. One original and chocolate. We were too full to eat that same day so we decided to keep it in a refrigerator overnight and tried it the next morning. The tarts were pretty good. Nice cookie like crust and sweet and savory cheese filling. I personally liked the original but my partner liked the chocolate on better. Chocolate one is not fully chocolate flavor and has some cheese flavor mixed in. Seemed to hold pretty well over night in refrigerator. The service was ok nothing special. I remember when Uncle Tetsu opened in Toronto around a decade ago. The craze had people lining up out the door for hours. Back then they only did the regular cheesecake for $10 CAD. So when uncle tetsu finally opened in Boston, I was 1) over the hype and 2) pleasantly surprised by their diverse menu. For one the prices have really risen, the cake now costs close to $20 USD. They have a lot of other small sweet treats. I saw a deal on UberEats and decided to try something different. The cake size from what I recall from almost a decade ago has definitely shrunk. But the chocolate cake was so soft, so airy, exactly how I remember it. The tarts tasted a little eggy for my taste. I don't like tasting the egg in my egg / cheese tart. Would I be back? Maybe. After dinner in Chinatown, we decided to talk to Uncle Tetsu to get some cheesecake. It was around 9pm, there was a short line. We were told it would take about 30 mins if we want cheesecake. Since we had a show to catch so I decided to get whatever is available. I bought a bag of cheesecake rusk and 4 madeleines. The rusks are airy and creamy when it melt, highly addictive. The Madeleines are moist and not too sweet, just how I like it. This is not a sit-down type of place. It's more for pick up only. We tried Uncle Tetsu's cheesecake and to be honest, it was a little underwhelming. I really wanted to love this place and start buying their cakes for birthday celebrations, but it was just okay. The presentation is top notch for their speciality cheesecakes. From the nice shopping bag to the box...and once you open it, the cake is wrapped in a nice cloth-like wrapper (not parchment paper or plastic wrap). Then you see the cake with their logo on the middle. The cake looks perfect. We did the jiggle test and it did not jiggle at all. The cake itself is like a pre-mixture of cheesecake and cake...like someone crumbled it all together and then pieced it together to form a cake. It's not layered like typical cheesecakes. This was quite interesting texture wise. A little crumbly but not really. The cake is not very sweet. Usually eating cake makes my coffee taste bland but its the opposite with the Tetsu cake. After several bites, I did feel a film like after taste in my mouth. This was my first time trying their cakes. I hope my experience is a one-off. Or, I'm just too picky or not normal. Was excited when Uncle Tetsu opened up finally since I used to get it sometimes during my travel. It is a tiny store in Chinatown - no wheelchair access since they only have stairs to go down to the shop. Still limited menu - only their signature cheesecake, madeleines and the cheese crisps are available. The cheesecake tasted better in my head - I used to love it but somehow when I tried it here again, it fell short of my expectations. It is not too sweet and the texture is fluffy and airy.
