Tunisian Eggs Brunch
Alexandra D.

Great food, the Tunisian eggs with lamb kabob added for brunch was delicious to the point not a single drop left in neither my partner nor I's bowls. Also came with a side salad and potatoes. We left very full and happy. Cute and unique diner kind ambiance. And good service as well.

FOOD: Breakfast dishes were hearty I loved the wonderful Mediterranean twist to the breakfast items. I ordered the Tunisian Eggs and it was perfect for this cold weather. The salads were really tasty and the bread was piping hot from the oven. Middle Eastern Eggs was a great platter as well. Would love to come back to try more things in the menu. AMBIANCE: This places brings you back in time with the diner booths and historic movie posters. Menu is written on the glass in additional to the physical menus. I loved that it's not over crowded and it's perfect for a quiet start of the morning. PARKING: Street parking. Just a short distance from the Montclair Art Museum.

4.5 Stars 10/6/23: A group of us stopped in Uncle Momo after an art exhibit in Montclair. We did have reservations. Restaurant is small and a BYOB. Service was very friendly, but on the slow side. The server came over to us twice and apologized for the delay. We ordered a Lamb Kofta Kabab Plate (me) , Chicken and Lamb Pitzas. Please see attached photos. Everyone enjoyed their food. My lamb platter was excellent. A baklava dessert came home with me. This baklava was phenomenal. It was light and not sweet. Loved it!!! Take out and delivery is available. Parking is available on the street and local parking lots. Took off half a star because our order was slow. Other than that issue, I would definitely come and enjoy another delicious meal.At Uncle Momo.

12/24/23 Hubby and I decided to try something completely different for Christmas Eve dinner and it was delicious! Rahib (eggplant) - OMG this was delicious! I can eat this all day long! Foul (fava bean) - hubby loved it. The beans are too hard for me, but the flavor was good Chicken Tajine - oh so good! The preserved lemon is interesting and gives the chicken some zest Branzino - they fillet it for hubby and was tender and very well seasoned. The spinach was very well seasoned, usually it's just bland but this was delicious! Karcade Hibiscus Flower - lightly sweetened and refreshing Mint Tea - hubby enjoyed it but it tasted like toothpaste to me :( Service was good, our waitress was attentive and helpful. The restaurant was small and cute but a bit dark for me. I had to turn on my cellphone light to read the menu.

Freshly Baked Pita- has to be purchased

Service could use improvement. The waitress we had did not know the menu and could not answer basic questions. -no complementary bread/pita. Even when ordering things that requiring dipping such as lebne. Have never been to a Mediterranean restaurant that does not provide pita. in too if that, the pita that one orders is quite thin/small for almost $1 and needing multiple -mixed grill: smallest mixed grill I have ever gotten at a restaurant. The tomato sauce in the dish didn't go with the dish and tasted as if it were jarred. The chicken did not have a nice grilled flavor as they usually do in the many other mediterranean mixed grills I have tasted. Not worth the price. -crusted salmon: okay, nothing to write home about Overall, pricey for the amount if food served and okay flavors. Would not return and for the money, would suggest going elsewhere.

Chicken Shawarma

Uncle Momo was a quiet little shop. The restaurant is cozy and allows for small groups and comfortable conversations. The staff was attentive and helpful and the food tasted authentic. There wasn't a large diversity in the flavor of the foods but definitely recommend the tabbouleh and chicken shawarma.

Service was great and I love the restaurant's decor! It was our first time trying the cuisine and the food was great. I definitely liked the food but didn't love-love it. I did however LOVE the hummus and their pita bread! So so good! Their location is also in a nice area where you can walk to the art museum practically next door and to the Van Velk Garden just 10 minutes away.

Momo Mezze

It was a stroke of luck that I found Uncle Momo on a visit to some of Montclair's beautiful gardens because I had a great experience in their location in Jersey City a few years ago! We were a bit early for a Saturday dinner so were able to grab a window seat for our party of 5 right away - and it was the best seat in the house! They were limiting capacity by placing giant teddy bears on many of their tables and had QR code menu but offered a hardcopy to our non-smartphone member. Let's get straight to food! Momo Mezze (APP, $21, 5/5) - A great appetizer choice to explore a whopping SIX of their apps! We ordered Babaganoush, Rahib, Hummus, Moutabal Beets, Mujadara, and Labne and served with freshly toasted pita bread, 5 of us went into a dipping and piling up frenzy! Beets and Babaganoush were really refreshing with Labne (yogurt), Eggplant was nice and meaty and only the lentil was ever so slightly tough. This got us all revved up - highly recommended for a group. Lamb Tagine (Special, $28, 4/5) - The entree that wow'd me at Jersey city. It came with nice big bone-in lamb shank in a pan with just dates and apricots and light sauce. A bit lacking in presentation compared to the JC one, but the lamb was just as decadent. Meat was easily shredded off the bone with fork and knife, had zero lamb smell, and very tender and not dry at all. Coupled with jasmine rice it came with (we ordered extra rice) and the delectable bits of date and apricot which gives this dish that sweet taste, it was the right order. Only minus was the lack of any other veggies (other location had onions, etc. and better presented) and that it was 10% too sweet! Momo Pitza (Oven Baked, $15, 3/5) - Very light, airy and crispy crust with delicious light vegetable toppings. Easy to eat & enjoy. Nothing overly special although good to have. Chicken Shish Kabab Plate (Entree, $18, 3/5) - Again thought it was a bit too simple in presentation, but chicken was juicy (but a bit too salty!), and the mushed lentil was really hearty and good with boiled tomato in the center. Slightly one-dimensional in flavor though not bad. Muhalabia (Dessert, $6.25, 5/5) - Milk pudding with rose water & strawberries. This was a surprising hit with everyone. Great refreshing finish to a hearty meal, that silky milk flavor was perfectly matched to the hint of delectable rose flavor for the win. Pistachio Ice Cream (Dessert, $7.50, 5/5) - Love how it had great bites of pistachio and was NOT TOO SWEET! My mom and wife really loved it. Turkish coffee (Dessert, $3.50, 2/5) - A bit stale and not very fragrant Baklava (Dessert, $4.75, 2/5) - This one definitely sat in the display for a while because we could immediately tell it wasn't too fresh. In fact, we had to struggle to cut it in half (we were sharing) with a KNIFE. That isn't how a baklava is supposed to be! No sir! A BYOB place, so bring your wine and beer! At slightly over $100 for a party of 5, we were really satisfied overall and felt really good. Location is beautiful too on a nice happening street and their outdoor seating looked beautiful as well. Don't pass this one up!

Tabouleh Salad
Richard R.

Very good Lebanese and French food and warm and pleasant space. They serve both Labanese dishes and French bistro items such as Steak Frites. What we ordered; Hummus -Chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil. Lamb Tajine - Traditional moroccan slow cooked lamb shanks with caramelized prunes & almonds, served with basmati rice. Chicken Shish Kabab Plate -Chicken breast with basil, garlic and lentil puree. All of our dishes were excellent. Social distancing was observed by our servers as we ate inside as it raining. Service was excellent all night. Uncle Momo was doing a brisk take out business. Looking forward to returning.

Mixed Grill
Dom G.

I love how this place is BYOB!! Made an early dinner reservation to sit outside which was pretty seamless. Lots of choices to choose from so can't go wrong. Opted for mixed grill as it was my first time here and I wanted to try out the different meats. All were very nice and enjoyable. Would have been great to have some of the dishes served with garlic sauce but they did not have any. Would definitely come back here again and try out other things.

We'd never tried the lamb hummus before but after enjoying it this time, I'm sure we'll be ordering it again. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to return yesterday. This time, I went alone. I was excited to go back, until the moment I walked in and was immediately asked whether I had a reservation. I said no. I was one person, and there were plenty of empty tables. Despite that, I was placed in a freezing corner by the door. It was uncomfortable and honestly unwelcoming. Nowhere on your website does it say "reservations only," yet that's exactly how I was treated. I felt so uncomfortable that I chose to leave without even placing an order. I walked in ready to spend money and enjoy a meal, and instead I walked out feeling dismissed. You lost a paying customer. What makes this worse is that I later told the same friend I originally went with, and she shared that when she calls ahead for a party of two, they simply tell her to come in because there are plenty of seats and that reservations aren't even required. So clearly, reservations are not the issue. That makes the way I was treated feel intentional and different. As a Palestinian who spends a lot of time in Paterson, I'm very familiar with Middle Eastern restaurants and pricing. Lentil soup is a staple on our menus. I know what a reasonable price looks like. For example, Kral Pide in Paterson charges $7. Charging $15 for lentil soup is excessive. It's not just high, it's outrageous. I'm extremely disappointed. I came back because I genuinely liked this place. Instead, I left feeling uncomfortable and disrespected. I will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone, nor will I be bringing friends or family to this establishment again.

I was truly looking forward to enjoying this place because the Yelp reviews seem to rave about the…read morecozy atmosphere, wonderful service, and the fresh food preparation. But although I found the restaurant to be cozy and my server to be friendly, the food though freshly prepared was just average at best. Let me explain. So, after perusing the menu, I saw a few Mediterranean staples, such as, baba-ghanoush, lentil soup, and a beef Shawarma entrée. So I decided to order all three of those items. Now, let me tell you not only was I excited to taste the food here, but I truly wanted to experience what a majority of people on yelp said about this place and its food. But I soon discovered that you truly cannot trust other peoples opinions when it comes to food. You just literally have to try it yourself to see if it even resembles that cuisines standard benchmarks. Well anyway, let me get to what I thought about the food. The lentil soup it's pretty tasty, but it would serve lukewarm. The baba-ghanoush was also tasty, but the pita bread was stale and void of any flavor. And as for the so-called Beef Shawarma entrée, it was literally chopped up cubes of beef! Nothing near to what a standard Shawarma entrée should resemble, or let alone taste like! To be quite honest, I was so disenchanted with the Shawarma entrée that I asked my server to take it away and just give me the bill. I was ready to go! But my server genuinely saw my disappointment with this so-called Beef Shawarma that she pleaded with me to try another entrée. So I asked her to recommend another entrée to me. And she recommended the Skewered Chicken entrée. So, I caved in and went ahead and ordered this Skewered Chicken entrée. But I should've just went with my gut feeling and just should have paid the bill and left. I say this because it took forever for them to prepare this Skewered Chicken entrée and I mean forever! And this is on a Tuesday night with only two other people inside the restaurant, so literally this place was empty! (Not sure if the Cook made me wait for this dish out of spite for me sending back the first entree but that is my suspicion). Anyway, I got my server's attention and she told me if I could wait a few more minutes because they were plating my dish and that it will be out shortly. And that literally took another 10 minutes. To say that I was eager to get out of this place would be an understatement. I was standing up literally putting on my jacket when the dish finally reached my table. My server asked me kindly to return to my seat and to try her recommended entrée. So I gave her the benefit of the doubt and I did so. The Skewered Chicken entrée was a little better than the so-called Beef Shawarma entrée, but really nothing to write home about. What a letdown! I really wanted to give this restaurant one star, but my server really showed genuine concern about my dining experience. And I truly appreciated that. And so as for my take on Le Souk of Montclair NJ. I would caution spending your hard earned money at this restaurant. The food is mediocre at best and there are a lot of better options in the Montclair area for Mediterranean food.

The food is incredibly flavorful, everything from the creamy hummus to the smoky baba ghanoush to the juicy chicken shawarma tasted homemade in the best way. The pomegranate chicken was a standout, sweet, tangy, and full of depth. I loved the special brunch board-it had a little bit of everything! Chef Jumana has created something really special here. You can feel the love and intention behind every dish. It's BYOB, and they also have a small market inside with Middle Eastern spices and goods to take home. Can't wait to go back!
