Starting out with the incredible apps, the bread service is a must! Also, the brussels sprouts and meatballs were out of this world. The pasta was nothing short of extraordinary, home made cavatelli pasta, whipped ricotta with a little heat, perfection! The steak Was an absolute dream, and came with a side of crispy potatoes with a sauce on top that I absolutely could've taken a bath in! I would echo what the other person wrote from last night. Best described as a debacle. The one waiter was over whelmed but expressed his desire not to be there which didn't instill confidence out the gate . The menus they gave out were wrong so when we put in our order the waiter never said" we don't have that but let me check what we can do". Just brings out the wrong stuff and says it was close enough. When we ask to see the manager he says she's too busy to see us. When we say we shouldn't have to pay the full price for something we didn't order he again suggests: close enough so no. Add to it the stampede of wildebeests running through the apartment above us and we all just wanted to wipe the experience from our memory. I mean: the manager is too busy to deal with a legit upset customer ? So that's how you get a bad review. Added after comments by manager since I don't see a reply button. Thank you for that info. We dined at Walnut Street Kitchen on New Years Eve 2024. We have eaten there in the past and always been impressed with the food and the service. We arrived for our 6pm reservation and were greeted by a wonderful waiter named Jonas. He was a consistent and friendly server and I can say the service was fantastic. However, it did take very long time for our food to come out and we had to request a Sprite for our 13 year old 3 times. In the past, the food at WSK has been consistenly good. Nice sized portions, excellent flavors, memorable entrees. This place is a community gem. The ambiance could use some updating--the room is stark and uninventive, but we come for the food and to support a local business. We loved it when it was Corso 98 and we love love it now. However, our last visit on New Years Eve left two of us hungry and one of us thinking that perhaps the extremely small entree we ordered was a result of us being fleeced on New Years Eve! My husband ordered a fish dish (it may have been cod) and the portion was so small that we laughed when it came out. It seemed as if a full filet had been cut into thirds. The entree itself was tasty and flavorful, but the size of the entree was that of an appetizer. He was disappointed. My daughter order the cacio de pepe appetizer as a meal. She is 13 and the 4 "balls" would have been enough for her. However, this was no regular cacio de pepe. These were 4 fried rice balls that seemed to be deep fried with cheese. She loves cacio de pepe and was not expecting a rice dish. And so, she was also disappointed and did not eat the Walnut Street Kitchen's version of Cacio de Pepe. She did devour the duck fat roasted potatoes. They were a standout, flavorful and did not disappoint. I savored the Pork Chop. It was divine! As was the salad I ordered. I think it was the ceasar. My Pork Chop was HUGE and full of flavor. I definitely reccommend this dish. A good value and an even better meal! I have seen the owner's response to feedback about small portions. I think customers expect fullsized portions when they are paying top dollar for entrees. I suggest the owner raise prices so she can serve larger portions or offer dishes, like the pork chop, where she can meet customer expectations. We did mention being surprised at the portion size on the fish dish and our server gave us an understanding nod. Plus I dream about their olive oil cake at least once a week. My only lil complaint was that the portions (specifically the Valentine's Day prefix menu) were a little small for the price. Visited 02/25/2023 Back again for another 'bite' of the best pork chop I've ever had. Not sure exactly what the difference was, but the first one was a TOUCH... better. Still an amazing chop and perfectly cooked and seasoned. My wife opted for the char, which she felt was a bit too well done. (We love sushi/raw fish and make our salmon 'medium rare' at home.) Still, she enjoyed it very much. Brother and sister-in-law mirrored our selections and also enjoyed their meals as much as we did. Cappuccino / espresso are served HOT, which is a must for my wife. We also tried the olive cake, something we never have had before. Wow. I didn't know what to expect from "olive cake'... but this was really really good. So I wanted to love this place because I was a huge fan of Corso 98, the prior tenant. Their chef bought the place and renamed and reinvented it. Still has the same lovely charm and delicious menu, although lesser choices. Here are the positives: BYOB, fun Montclair location, pretty, comforting and ambiance. The food was fine. Opportunities: Service was just okay. The food was fine but nothing stands out about at this price point. It ain't cheap. Again as I've mentioned in previous reviews, the customer aspect is crucial in these times. People are still concerned about going out so when they do they want to know they're going to get the best customer service experience along with some pretty amazing food to make it worth your while. read more

My wife came here on a date night. We had an ok experience. Ambiance- this place needs a serious upgrade. No air coming through. It smelled like paint. It was outdated. We did love local art on the walls but the rest of the place seemed a bit dark . Service- We weren't impressed. My wife told our server she had a lactose allergy. 10 minutes later she comes back and says "you can't have that because it has ___ in it." So we choose something else. Ten minutes after that another server comes by and tells her "you can't have that because it has ___ in it." I have a problem with this for two reasons. 1) the server should have known from the start and not have us wait 20 minutes and bring over another server to again just to tell us what she can/can't have and , 2) There was no offer of an alternative. For example, if duck crostini comes with ricotta, could they have used a hard cheese instead which is lactose friendly? A good restaurant would have offered it Food- was actually really really good. But our experience from the other two clouded it we ordered the crab cake special and chicken skewers which were just ok but the steak was amazing - well seasoned and duck fat potatoes hit the greasy spot in only the way duck fat knows how to. Unfortunately - we won't be back because we were very much thrown off by the first two. I wish this place lots of luck because the food is generally good. My husband and I dined here for a day-after Valentine's celebration. Our 7:00 reservation allowed us to be seated right away. The playlist was stellar. It was all the music I grew up listening to as a kid, and it made me feel at home. McKenzie was our server and she was incredibly professional, kind, and attentive. The menu has so many great choices, but the specials shouldn't be slept on either! Here's what we had: Appetizers: -Brussels sprouts salad with sliced apple, marinated feta, roasted squash, candied pecans, quinoa and tossed in a vinaigrette - Kabocha squash ravioli in a braised beef and peanut ragu, crispy eggplant and a peanut-green bean crumble. Entrées: -Flat iron steak in a mustard-sherry au poive sauce, carmelized onions, and potato churritos -Fresh cavatelli in an escargot sauce, shelled escargot, topped with a parsley butter crumb - Side of sautéed wild mushrooms with sage and citrus Dessert: -Orange and cardamom olive oil cake, assorted coffee and tea. We finally made it to Walnut Street Kitchen for dinner this past Saturday night and had an amazing experience!! First off we were lucky enough to be seated in Mona's section of this beautiful dining room and could not have asked for better service! Her knowledge and recommendations on the dishes was so on point! We will definitely ask for her section in the future! There were so many great choices I think we over indulged on the appetizers and they were all so unique and delicious ! The Lump Crab seafood cake was my favorite! We are quite the foodies and my fiancée who is also as an excellent "home chef " and super picky ordered the Center Cut pork chop and he cannot stop taking about how perfect this chop was!! So tender, juicy and easy to cut! Thankfully the portion was large enough that he shared ..lol! From the appetizer to the deserts everything was made with the highest quality of ingredients ! It was really hard to narrow our choices so of course we will be heading back there very soon to try out everything else ! Chef Beverly herself was very visible in the dining room throughout the night which really says a lot about making sure her customers are truly enjoying her creations! Made a reservation here on a whim and am SO happy to have found this restaurant!! The decor is super cute - exposed brick with a clean but cozy aesthetic. Staff was friendly, down-to-earth, and perfectly attentive. Let's be real - we care about the food, and this place is legit!!! Lots of great options on the menu so we ordered quite a bit to try. I'll preface all of this by saying that I was too lazy to take pictures of the dishes, which is a shame because there were a few really pretty plates. We got the crispy duck crostini - not only gorgeous, but lots of great, interesting flavors (ricotta, hoisin, cherry) that paired perfectly together. The crostini was more of a lightly toasted bread, which actually made it easier to eat but still had a great texture. Cacio e Pepe arancini was nicely seasoned and the crispy pancetta added great flavor! My husband got the pork chop - a thick chop with a super tasty sausage stuffing, all perfectly cooked. I went with the spinach & cheese gnudi. I'm a sucker for anything with hazelnuts, and the tomato cream mixed with the pesto made for SUCH a delicious bite with the gnudi. Dessert was a thai tea-ramisu. Fun take on one of my favorite desserts, a nice ending to a fabulous meal. BYOB kept it surprisingly wallet-friendly. We will be back! read more

You can tell the chefs really put a lot of thought and time into curating such unique and tasty dishes. Highly recommend the pork chop! & the specials all sounded amazing too! The gnudi was like a brick. Gnudi is supposed to be light and airy and it was super dense, more dense than ricotta, which was odd. On top of that, it wasn't hot and the sauce broke. I take no pleasure in writing negative reviews but this restaurant ruined my birthday dinner. Each course somehow got progressively worse. I asked the waiter for recommendations before ordering and he said that everything on the menu was good. I should've taken that as red flag and left but it was Christmas Eve so where else was i going to go? crab wonton special... burnt meatballs... taste like all filler duck crostini... clumsy but not a bad taste arancini... inedible. was supposed to have pancetta but tasted like soap. arctic char... burnt salmon pork chop... dry and flavorless olive oil cake... shameful, a tiny piece of an old dry cake. This is the best restaurant I've been to in montclair. First, the service was immaculate. I didn't catch her name, but our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. Of course this wouldn't matter too much if the food wasn't good but thankfully the food matches the service. The radicchio salad is maybe the best salad I've ever had. My 21 month old daughter ate maybe 3/4th of the pappardelle bolognese and after trying it o understand why. We tried maybe 4 other dishes and they all range from good to great. The 4 of us had a great time at walnut street kitchen. The food was fantastic and that is why we were there! The service was one of a kind, everyone was so friendly and made the extra effort to make us feel welcomed. It was a busy night so the food did take quite a while as there were some new hands helping in the kitchen but we were notified as we were seated and were perfectly happy to wait because it was worth it! First off, the butter is delicious so make sure you have some bread and butter. It's 5 star butter! We started with the arancini and citrus salad. So yummy! Best rice balls I've ever had. The food is served in courses. You order your meal altogether when you get seated. Our server was very lively and amazing! The ambiance is dimly lit with cool abstract paintings that can be purchased. The food itself is innovative and fusion. Very interesting dishes. I personally am not very food adventurous so wasn't entirely sure what to expect with these dishes but I was very pleasantly surprised! We started with the special the brussel sprouts salad (crunchy brussel sprouts, squash, apples, quinoa - made for a lovely melody). Then I got the chicken adoba (pictured) with a side of three mushrooms. Incredibly flavorful and the chicken was a tad overcooked. The parmesan potatoes were to die for! Our other entree was a spicy cavatelli special. Got the flourless chocolate cake for dessert (was rich and balanced well with the sea salt) - I love flourless chocolate cakes typically but the texture of this one didn't do it for me. Tried this place for a first time and would hesitate to come back. Wait staff and vibe was pleasant. On the surface price point is reasonable for montclair but be aware of the portions. The entrees leave a lot to be desired relative to the accompanying sides on plate. I ordered eggplant piccata entree for $24. I got 4 sheet thin slices of fried eggplant that were oily and had no flavor over a hummus spread that also lacked flavor. I should of returned it but didn't want to wait for another meal. When I complained about the eggplant the hostess indicated that there's inflation costs etc etc. Not a good enough answer. Not sure I would recommend. read more

Sunday was the first time we'd tried Walnut Street Kitchen in Montclair, and I can't wait to go back there. This is one of the friendliest establishments around. And while I don't remember the owner's name, she was fantastic. The waitstaff were enjoyable as well. The ambiance was inviting and the artwork that adorned the restaurant seemed to include many different styles and had an international feel about them. More importantly, the food was delicious. Our table had a variety of dishes, including chicken fricassee, trout. lox with capers, and more. Do yourself a favor and check them out, too!!! You won't regret it!!! read more

I had the pleasure of recently going to a private event at Walnut Street Kitchen and had the best time ever. The service was amazing and the food was even better. Owner and chef Beverly, as well as the staff were attentive and served up some amazing food! In particular, for this event, home made pizzas and snacks were being served. The rice balls and pizzas were super fresh and definitely some of the best I've ever had. The space was intimate and the ambiance was perfect! Bev made sure that everyone was being taken care of while still holding down the kitchen, which isn't an easy task. I look forward to coming back again soon! read more

It was such a beautiful night that my husband and I grabbed a last min rez at Walnut St. Kitchen and got to sit outside. Our server was wonderful and attentive. We tried the duck crostini which had loads of texture and just enough duck. My husband enjoyed his roasted beet salad as well. The stuffed calamari entree was so inventive and full of flavor with the 'nduja. I also really enjoyed the red sauce. The bite of the truffled polenta with the crispy hen of the woods mushrooms was out of this world. We sipped a lovely red wine and took in the activity on Walnut street. We ended the night with the flourless chocolate cake - the salt made the dessert and it went so well with our wine. Loved our experience and would come back again. read more

The appetizer arrived promptly, but then the entrees took much longer--more than an hour after we finished the appetizer. Apparently the kitchen was very understaffed that evening. The food was excellent, as always. But I'd advise asking when you're seated how things are running that evening, so you can decide about ordering extra appetizers. My wife called it "nouvelle-no-food". Portions were artfully arranged but tiny, and without enough flavor to justify such small amounts and such high prices. Everybody left hungry, including my wife, who never leaves hungry. Service was cordial. Dessert (a graham cracker, unsweetened whipped cream thing) was absolutely tasteless. The manager made the mistake of asking about the dessert, so we told him, and he had the grace to take it off the bill. So to summarize, good service, but small, uninspired entrees that don't justify the high prices. RE: the restaurant's response: For the record, my wife dictated this review, and she stands by it. And when the server asked how was the dessert, she did NOT say "everything is so good" -- she told him the truth, as mentioned above. We -- along with at least four other couples -- spent nearly an hour waiting to be seated and attended to -- with a reservation. Never once offered water or a place to sit despite there being numerous open tables waiting to be flipped. The food may be good (we will never know as we had to leave) but the customer experience was pretty poor. Hope they get that sorted. read more

Unfortunately, you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. That is why I have no intention of returning anytime soon to this restaurant, which purports to be a reincarnation of the former Corso 98 Restaurant operated at the site. Ellio, the prior owner/manager, had a well-run kitchen with excellent service and delicious, well presented food. The new owners have retained none of those attributes. I attended a dinner for a party of about 20 last weekend, in which we were the only diners in the restaurant for most of the meal. Even so, the food was mediocre and unimaginatively presented, and the service was unbelievably slow (it was my impression that there was only a single chef in the kitchen and only a single server for a party of 20). The only things that were similar were the ambitiously described dishes on the menu and the inflated prices that might be merited if the fare had been outstanding, not pedestrian. read more
