I have a deep history with Halcyon and will always be my go to spot in Montclair. Back in my coaching days Halcyon was a frequent stop after scouting a game. This is a cute little fancy place in Montclair, perfect for celebrating a special occasion. We love seafood and enjoyed all our dishes. I recommend the salmon crudo, grilled octopus, and the ceviche special for apps. For entree we shared the seafood paella, which was loaded with clams, mussels, shrimp, and chorizo. Second time visiting this fine establishment, sitting at the bar with Fizz and Steve serving us great drinks and first class service with a friendly, professional vibe. There are some really nice seats besides the bar (windows seat with comfy couches and seats), but we usually enjoy the bar for the banter and other patrons. The food is delicious and every dish we have had has been perfect. Coconut shrimp roll is our favorite. Unusual combo that works perfectly. Grilled oysters (second favorite for me, not so much for my better half who avoids them...lol), scallops perfectly prepared, octopus, and fish tacos round out our experience so far. Came here on a Sunday with my husband. We had reservation and they took us right away. It may take you a little bit of time to find street parking so make sure you plan for that. We ordered a rainbow roll as an appetizer which was delicious. that was probably my favorite part. My husband got the filet mignon, which he enjoyed, and I got the paella, which was also great. I like how portions were perfectly sized. They didn't skimp out on the seafood either which happens a lot at other places. The spicy margarita was tasty. I went to Halcyon for brunch with my friend and I enjoyed myself. The ambiance was amazing. The restaurant has is so inviting. The outside has vines and flowers around with some lighting that lights up at night. It's very enchanting. The food was amazing. Jeff our waiter was outstanding. He was warm and friendly and he knew the menu very well. He even told us the special for the day. He also gave great recommendations. I love my guavallini, so delicious. My friend had the Amore Mio. That has champagne, raspberry and Limoncello. We ordered the special seafood quesadilla which including real fresh crab meat, shrimp and lobster meat. I have never had a quesadilla stuffed the way these were. So mouthwatering, flavorful and delicious. I also had the chicken and waffles. Hands down some of the best chicken and waffle ever. The chicken Jeff our waiter explained boneless chicken breast deep fried with two waffles. The chicken was drizzled woth sweet chilli sauce. I just loved the sweet chilli sauce on the chicken just the right amount of sweet and heat. The food was so good I could have picked the bowl. Brunch was amazing I could have ordered some more food. Stopped here as an in between spot from where I was coming from to where I would be headed. I had been here once before with a group of friends and had a good time. The decor and atmosphere is nice and chill. Music not overpowering; you can hear people talking. This time I sat at the bar. The bartender was a bit abrupt and unfriendly to start. I was deciding on my drink order and he came by curtly asking what I wanted. I replied with "I haven't decided yet." He walked off. I decided to order the same thing I did last time to eat, the smoked salmon plate. This time however, the salad looked a bit wilted and the cooked portion of salmon ( you get a smoked portion and a cooked portion) was overcooked. It was dry and hard to cut into. On top of that, the bartender was quite rude to another patron sitting near me. Telling her "You came in with an attitude." When she attempted to bring his behavior to his attention. I thought that was highly unprofessional. No matter what you and a customer disagree about, you don't say something like that. All in all, it could have been a better 2nd experience without that type of service/interaction I witnessed. In all fairness, the other bar helper was sweet and friendly. Would I come back again??? My friend and I made a reservation for 2 on a Saturday afternoon, but found that the restaurant was not very busy at the time. Halcyon is beautifully decorated as the holiday decorations remained up and lived up to the expectations of what I saw on social media. The interior is a bit upscale and there is a nice intimate atmosphere. We ordered the eggs benedict, huevos rancheros, and smashed potatoes as a side. The mains were beautifully presented, but we were a bit underwhelmed by the smashed potatoes. We found the poached egg in the eggs benedict to be overcooked with solid whites, although the rest of the dish was delicious. The huevos rancheros were pretty good in my opinion. The butter crab roll was the best dish we had. The tuba tartare was as plain as it gets. The miso soy salmon was decent but over cooked. We asked how the chef recommended the salmon and the server said medium. We debated whether to go with medium rare but decided to stick with the servers recommendation. Had a reservation for two on a Thursday night. There is parking in the back behind the main entrance of the restaurant and street parking in the front. The restaurant is nice and the host was friendly. We ordered fried calamari, croquettes and the fish tacos to start. The calamari was good but our favorite were the croquettes. They were really good. The fish tacos were alright I only ate one because I was not a fan. We also ordered sushi which we also thought wasn't very good. It tasted fresh but bland. We eat sushi often and this is not the place to go to for sushi. Cocktails were well made the first round we ordered but tasted different for the second round which was odd. Came for brunch with friends and fam. The place is decorated sooo cute! I could definitely see someone hosting a shower of some sorts here, that's how cute and cozy it is inside. The host and waitress were both friendly and attentive. Now for the food. So we got the crab cake starter to share and the truffle parm fries, both were 10/10. Every time I go out for brunch, I always have to get the chicken and waffles. So that's where they lost a star unfortunately lol. The waffles were way too soft for me. Add on syrup and it just becomes a soggy mess lol. On top of that, the menu did NOT say that the meal comes with a sweet chilli sauce drizzle. That totally threw me off when it came because that's something I would've asked for on the side, only because all my fruits were in the chilli sauce too and that's not for me. Everyone else enjoyed their meals, especially the croissant French toast, also 10/10. Burger was average (but I'm biased because I am a big burger girl lol). Expresso martini was also very yummy. We went to try this place with friends. First we were seated at an unsuitable table next to the bar with uneven seats. We asked to move and they accommodated us. I started with oysters: Blue Point; Dixon Point; and Beausoleil. All refreshing and yummy. Everyone else started with a Caesar salad which they enjoyed. I got the Paella which was good but a bit small in portion size. Our group ordered the miso salmon, halibut, and tuna entrees. They enjoyed these as well. The cocktails were excellent. Gin N Juice was simply delicious and I could have drank a gallon of these. Halcyon days was also a hit. For dessert I had the sticky date pudding which was outstanding. Other desserts ordered weee chocolate mousse and a meringue tart. They were also tasty. Very spacious with two bars, one upstairs and downstairs . Halcyon always has tasty oysters, fresh and served with a very tasty Mignonette sauce. We enjoy sitting in the dining room, away from those horrible twig branches taking up precious table room. Crowded and noisy on a Saturday night, but good food served by a prompt and attentive staff. My wife said her cosmo was very good. Beet salad and tomato/burrata salad were also very good. My pork chop (special) was cooked perfectly, and my wife was happy with her Icelandic cod. Our friends both ordered paella and both seemed happy with it. Expensive, even for Montclair, but at least they don't charge for bread. No parking lot, and street parking is quite limited, since there are several other restaurants, cafes, and bars on this portion of Walnut Street -- but a couple of blocks to the east is the Walnut Street train stop where you can park in the evening in the non-permit spaces. We will try to come back on a weekday evening when it is (hopefully) less crowded. read more

The girls and I decided to meet up and get drinks and dinner. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked in and the really nice hostess sat me with my party. The girls slowly started to trinkle in. Our server was Ani and he seemed to be bothered every time we asked for something. One of my friends spoke to one of the managers, Chris, earlier about seating and she said he gave her a hard time. She asked the server about seperate checks because she has done it many times there before. The server said he had to ask the manager, Chris, because they didn't do that. She asked to speak to him and he came over and he said they never spilt checks. She proceeded to tell him they done it many times before and he pretty much lied to her face and made her feel like she was wrong. Not ok. We then proceeded to order drinks. I started with wine which was good then red sangria and that was not good. I sent it back to get an LIT and that too was not good but I sucked it up and drank it anyway. The girls ordered many things and they pretty much didn't really care for their food. The truffle fries was probably the hightlight of the night. The place is pricy I will say that as well and I am not sure why. All in all I didn't enjoy my time and will not come back. read more

Good food and atmosphere, slow service This seems to be a trendy spot with a good selection of menu items (seafood, meat, flatbread, sushi, etc). The calamari was tasty with breading that fell off the squid upon pricking...a little expensive though ($16). The Cornish hen with polenta and haricot verts was great (the truffle mushroom sauce helped to moisten the hen). The fish tacos were good as well. Portions aren't huge but they do seem to take some care with the food. We waited a long time to get our food (from ordering, over an hour) though we did get the calamari first. If you're not in a super hurry then it should be fine. There's street parking only, with some two hour parking on a cross street (Friday night). Apparently they also have a 30 minute grace period for reservations which is nice. read more

Halcyon is that fancy spot in town that you take family or friends to impress or celebrate something. This is so, particularly when you look at the menu which consists mostly of seafood fare. Directly next door to Egans, it's inexpensive and more casual counterpart was jam packed on a warm evening so we were able to squeeze into Halcyon after some convincing of the hostess. My impressions of Halcyon are ...not bad. The Jumbo crab sushi wasn't bad. The Edamame appetizer had some nice spice to it and the special flatbread was also pretty good, both seem a bit overpriced though. What went wrong was the curry cauliflower appetizer. Beyond the mediocre presentation it was laughably bad. It was like someone took the bagged frozen cauliflower from my freezer, heated it up, spread some tahini on a saucer and brought it out. not to mention it was hardly enough for a single person to enjoy, let along 2 or 3. Avoid this and save $10. My steak tacos were good as was my Halcyon Days drink, the recommended cocktail here. The outdoor seating was nice and the waiter we had was pretty knowledgeable about menu...except for that cauliflower. So overall Halcyon is just alright. That's it's problem though just alright for a $$$ is not good. 3 drinks, 3 apps, an entrée and a sushi roll was well over $100. $21 for steak tacos? Again, good, but there are a few places I can think of that has that (or fish tacos) comparably good and half the price. If you're looking to impress your group Halcyon will do the trick but everything I had here, though ok, I've had cheaper and about as good or better. read more

Of course it was very busy in the area and Egan and Sons was packed so we went next door to Halcyon. Never having been here before, I wasn't sure what to expect. However, the food and drinks were all pretty good, and the service was very friendly too. I would certainly come back here to enjoy some drinks again, although the food is a little on the pricey side. I shared a few things including the cauliflower and the daily flatbread. We really liked the flatbread as it had cheese and salmon on it, almost like a pizza. Unfortunately the cauliflower was extremely small. Barely enough for 1 person and it cost $9. Kind of ridiculous. But the sushi I got really made up for it as the jumbo crab and sauce on the outside was so good. I gobbled it up! The outdoor setting they have in the back was beautiful as well.
