Anniversaries, birthdays, etc. For 2 adults ordering 2 drinks each, 1 appetizer & 1 entree each, then sharing a dessert ... we spent $265 including a 22% tip. The entrees were the stars of the show ... filet mignon & ahi tuna. Both cooked perfectly; medium & rare, respectively. The accompaniments were divine as well - a black rice with so much flavor for the tuna. It was superb! Caramel apple ice cream was great! (Even though it's not made in house) drinks from the bar were creative & delicious. Waiter was incredible - knowledgeable & very professional; didn't know one of the answers to my questions about the ingredients. Instead of lying or trying to pull off some answer, he simply said he was not positive & returned with an incredible presentation of a bottle & my respect! We left satisfied to the fullest & appreciative of a sweet gesture of 2 glasses of champagne by our waiter for our anniversary. Bravo! 5 stars! read more

I'll start off by saying this place is absolutely gorgeous. As soon as you walk through the doors you are greeted by stunning decor, you feel like you are almost sitting outdoors while you're indoors as they have vines strewn throughout the restaurant. There was live music this evening which really fit the vibe of the restaurant, calming and classy. 10/10!! My partner and I got an awesome corner seat, we felt like we were tucked away. We started out with the spicy tuna roll and the tacos for our appetizers. Both were packed with flavor. The sushi was very very fresh. (I can't help myself but mix in a little wasabi into the soy sauce for that extra kick!)We also split a bottle of their Auctioneer Cabernet Sauvignon. After appetizers we ordered our entrees. My partner got the burger while I ordered the scallops. The scallops were absolutely divine and my goodness the cheesy base with bacon, that it came in, perfectly complimented those scallops. The reason I am giving this 4 stars is because our waiter accidentally knocked over my full glass of wine and it went all over the table and my arm. I didn't make a big deal about it in the moment but I am very disappointed that that happened. It took away from a very enjoyable evening. Also note to self, don't come here close to closing time as you can hear the staff cleaning up and making noise in the kitchen. It was very loud. The food and service here are superb. We had early dinner reservations (6:30p) and we were promptly seated. The hostess was accommodating when we asked to be reseated at a slightly bigger table, which was great because we ended up ordering a lot of food. We started with a dozen Blue Point oysters, which were super fresh and deliciously briny. They were the perfect appetizer with the ice-cold vodka martinis. For the mains, we split sushi rolls and paella. The paella was piled high with seafood, including mussels, scallops, shrimp and clams. The saffron rice was cooked nicely and very flavorful. The sushi was delicious too: the rainbow roll had small pieces of mango and the spicy tuna was not overly spicy so you could still taste the fish. My only feedback with the rolls was that they were unevenly cut: some pieces were large while others were small, some pieces were tall and others were short. However, it was such a minor detail and the service was so good, the overall experience made for a great date night. read more

I honestly had a wonderful experience and can't wait to go again! I made a reservation over the phone for a group of 6 on a Friday to celebrate my birthday. I asked for outdoor seating but they told me they can't guarantee that since I have a big group but they would note my preference. Parking in Montclair can be a bit hard but I made my reservation for 630 so it was a bit before the evening rush. We easily found street parking. We ended up in a booth instead of outside but I didn't even mind at all since the decor and Aesthetic inside was absolutely beautiful! The booths had barriers between each table so you had privacy which I thought was a great idea. The waiter was very nice and attentive the whole time. We ordered a good amount of appetizers Spicy salmon roll 5/5 wow and YES Cali roll 4/5 East and West coast oysters 5/5 and SO FRESH Lobster Mac and Cheese 3/5 good but nothing to rave about For entrees I got the Seafood Paella 4/5 Honestly it was good with great flavor but I didn't read it thoroughly. I didn't realize it had meat but the chunks were big enough that I was able to pick it out! The rest of my family got The Miso Soy Salmon, Classic Cheeseburgers they also all enjoy their meals! I had Brut Rose which I enjoyed and a glass of Pinot Grigio! We also got dessert the apple crumble and chocolate mousse! The apple dessert was my favorite and I think everyone else's too! I'm shocked that this restaurant doesn't have a higher overall rating on Yelp. I went last night with my husband and we were happy with everything. Atmosphere - only saw the first floor; very cool decor; acoustics were loud Service - Tara was delightful and helped us make decisions with the menu Food - delicious and fresh! We had the fish tacos with blackened cod as an appetizer. I am VERY PICKY about fish tacos and haven't found good ones outside of San Diego. These were so good, I texted my California family and announced that I finally found great fish tacos in New Jersey! The fish was well cooked and seasoned, the guacamole was flavorful and the pickled onions added a nice crunch. If I ate all 3, that could have been my dinner. For entrees I had the red snapper special and my husband had the braised short rib special. Both were delicious with large portions. I highly recommend the fingerling potatoes and leeks as a side. So good! We both can't eat sugar so we skipped dessert, but saw other tables happily gobbling up some beautiful looking sweets. It was easy enough to make an 8 pm reservation on open table. Our reservation was for 8 and we were slightly late because of trouble parking. We waited about 10 minutes for our table and it was obviously crowded. We ordered drinks and they came pretty quickly. I tried the grimlette and my husband some version of an old fashioned off the special cocktail drinks. We ordered two of every oyster and that's where things started taking forever. Our server said the raw bar was backed up so we waited about 45 minutes. The oysters were good, because they had lots of options. Afterwards our food came around 930 but my scallops were luke warm and his shrimp risotto lacked much flavor. This is an upscale restaurant with a great decor and vibe. Elegant and chic, but not overly showy. The place was filled, despite it being a Tuesday night at 7:00pm. Great service, especially on refilling water glasses! Seated promptly and sat in a nice roomy booth. Grilled oysters were fantastic - great flavors and well prepared. You get six and I could've eaten two plates myself. The Moules Frittes were also excellent, although usually it comes with some French bread to soak up the broth. But really tasty and nice thin, crispy fries. Kimchi fried rice was really disappointing- the flavors just don't go well together and the Kimchi overpowers everything making it a wet, hot and sour rice dish. Chef needs to seriously rethink this one and maybe develop a better taste for Asian cuisine. Seared Ahi Tuna was good - not the most amazing I've had, but still satisfying. Halibut was well prepared and very good. Live jazz trio was a nice touch but it makes the place REALLY loud as people try to talk over the music. All in all, a positive experience and will likely try again for a special evening out (it's a bit pricey) read more

This Walnut Street restaurant has been around for a while but it's easy to why it is a mainstay of the Montclair restaurant scene. Situated right next the quintessentially popular Egans & Sons, this seafood brasserie serves solid eclectic food in an attractive space with staff that really aims to please. It really deserves 3 1/2 stars in my book. We arrived at prime time on a Friday night. We had a reservation and the hostess first tried to seat our party of 4 at what is arguably the worst table in the house. It was a cramped four top right behind the hostess stand. We asked to be reseated and they obliged. It's worth noting that if you're a party of 6 they'll seat you at one of their many booths which line the side of the main dining room; and those seats look to be comfy and cool. I couldn't decide between the 3 Pinot noir by the glass options and the server was happy to bring a few choices to taste before committing. I was impressed with their by the glass wine list-they had several nice options in rose, red and white. The gin cocktail my brother in law ordered was very watered down. He sent it back and settled on a straight up gin on the rocks with a twist. Much improved. Despite a very appealing craft cocktail menu, it does seem that based on our experience and the other yelp comments that maybe their bar tenders need to brush up on their mixology. We shared the grilled oysters and the octopus starter. Both super tasty and plated nicely. I ordered the whole roasted bronzino and a side of broccolini, and both were spectacular. Others enjoyed the seafood paella and the cod entree. There wasn't a single miss on the food. The server we had was so attentive and pleasant. I watched as other servers hustled all around running food out, refilling water glasses, and efficiently clearing on a busy night so it was clear the staff really has it together here. The space in the main dining room is a little awkward. It's just a little cramped. The bar is very pretty and looked to be a fun place to hang out. I've been to a party in the upstairs space and the food and experience there was equally good. I am now trying to recall why I haven't been here before after having made reservations on several occasions. But one thing is for sure...we will be back. I have dined here, been to parties upstairs, but most recently had a holiday cheer celebration with nice women friends. Fabulous cocktails and wines. We enjoyed a number of appetizers and small plates including raw oysters, grilled oysters, tacos, tomato burrata salad and more. If you love seafood, Halcyon is a good choice. If you like an upscale yet friendly milieu, Halcyon is a good choice. Our group, just under 10, sat by the window on main level. The upper level party room is a really nice space for a casual cocktail party celebration. Fish entrees are what I choose for main entree--never been disappointed. We also had to walk up to get drink lbs versus being served . So that's why I have 3 stars I actually like the inside - the bar downstairs looks cool. I like the candle light upstairs that Saturday night- the DJ upstairs was playing 90's hip hop and r&b - it was awesome .. he even played stuff like Sa-Ra, slum village and j dilla. Dope . The only thing is that hardly anyone was there!!! We were there but then they stopped the music at 1:15pm when I think the place closed at 2am!!! Came here on a search for oysters. The pizza spot I usually go to was seemingly closed and I really wanted some good oysters. I got them here. East coast and west coast with different varieties of each. I can't resist a good grilled octopus so I ordered that as well. Last night was first time at Halcyon and it will not be my last. The place is beautiful and has a great ambience. Our server was very friendly and knowledgable of the menu. He also had great recommendations to offer. From the raw bar, we had the 3 different type of oysters they offered which were great. From the sushi bar, we ordered the coconut shrimp tempura roll and spicy salmon hako style. Both items had great flavor but the spicy salmon hako style had a little too much rice for my liking. From the appetizers, we ordered crispy calamari, which was pretty standard. From the entrees menu, I ordered the seafood paella, which was a big portion (picture provided), filled with seafood and packed with flavor. My friends ordered house kimchi fried rice, pan seared miso salmon, roasted chicken and the night special miso cod with ramen. They were all pleased with their dishes. From the sides menu, we got the truffle Parmesan frites and pickled fries which both were fantastic. And their cocktails were delicious. We arrived at 5 pm for our 5 pm reservation. We spoke to the hostess gave our name and the proceeded to tell her we want to sit at the bar. She replied, "first come, first serve. Sit anywhere." So we walked over and sat down. Only to be told by the bartender those seats are reserved. I walked back to the hostess to confirm, you said that we could sit anywhere, correct?she said yes. I then asked why is the bartender saying it's reserved? Can you reserve at the bar. She said no and looked confused. With that a rude 'manager' came over to say that certain people can make a reservation at the bar. This was not a pleasant confrontation. We exchanged words but decided to leave. We work too hard to earn our money to give it to horrible people. We left and went to Eagan and sons. This past Friday evening my wife and I ventured out with 7:30 dinner reservations for Halcyon in Montclair, another foodie location we would check off of our Go-To List for Montclair/Upper Montclair's "Top" rated restaurants. Finding a legal parking spot was somewhat of an initial challenge yet after driving around the block a few times we finally nabbed one relatively close by to the restaurant. Halcyon, not unlike similar storefront facades, is unremarkable. However, once through the narrow vestibule, it becomes evident that Halcyon invested quite a bit in design, furnishings, and finishes. Their hostess greeted us promptly and we were shown to a lovely oblong granite-like table that could have easily accomodated 6 guests. Once we had our drinks, we began to look around more closely at the interior. Tables, other than the booth-like ones we were seated at, were spaced a favorable distance apart. A center planter-like divider separated the bar area from the main dining room and was adorned with rustic foliage one might find in an English garden, quite a nice touch. All was going well until our orders began to arrive. First, my Pigno Grigio was poured from a pre-measured tumbler; clearly, the bar made certain that my wine glass would only show half full, an early indication of cost savings measures. Then, my App arrived. This was shown as "The Colossal Crab Cake". Much to my surprise, the crab cake was approx 2-1/4" in diameter X 3/4" high, not nearly as large as characterized on the menu, another disappointment. Additionally, restaurant photos of "popular dishes" includes pics of their crab cake which are not representative of what is served. My wife decided to pass on an App and ordered the Lamb Shank. This particular dish is not usually served with pasta yet, again, it appeared that the lamb had been cut into small bite-sized portions giving the impression that cost could have been the deciding factor in preparing it as opposed to presenting the dish with the (entire cut) of lamb as the focal point. The lamb was buried under a mound of ribbon shaped pasta which prevented the lamb from being the "star" of this dish. [Note that during our wait for having our dinner served, we had to ask for bread which was then brought to our table.] My Main consisted of the Blackened Swordfish. Frankly, I was very disappointed with the presentation and the portion. First, the swordfish itself was clearly cut into a small, pie-shaped slice, adorned with veggies. Given the fact that Halcyon is primarily a seafood restaurant, I found this to be unusual. Again, although I can appreciate the artistic nature of the Chef's skills, I am not one to invest in Art during dinner as having the fish served in a somewhat unrecognisable manner does not justify it's price point. Ambience: At around 8 pm, all tables were occupied. We then noticed an elevated area that appeared to be available for guests as well. Around this time, the level of vocalisation was over the top which made it difficult to carry on a conversation with one's partner. Adjacent guests both in back and in front of us (in booths) had their voice levels over the charts which made Halcyon appear to be more of a corner bar than that of an upscale restaurant. Price Point: Halcyon is quite expensive given the manner in which our Mains were prepared and presented. Although the overall setting was very pleasing, given the noise level, trying to enjoy a peaceful evening in a fine dining establishment was not to be found at Halcyon. [ At the time of this posting, the Lamb Shank Main was not seen on the menu. ] read more

The hor'dourves were great: crab, lobster, shrimp but I wasn't too pleased with the steak; however, I am not a big steak eater. It was crowded and we were hoping to be in the main dining area since we made reservations and made them aware of the milestone birthday. My oysters were very good, I loved the octopus and the spaghetti lobster. The food was very good. Service was pretty slow. Had to ask for drinks a few times, napkins and so on.
