Came here for their Drag Brunch on Sunday. The theme was Babes of Broadway, and OMG was it awesome!! They had themed cocktails, which were delicious- priced at around $15 each which was a bit more than in other places, but I understood since it was a special event. The food was okay, I got their Chicken Caesar sandwich which wasn't amazing but was also not bad -- i think i would've appreciated if they used a different bread for it. The service was great, though they did get our food out at different times - we were warned about it, so it was good to have set the expectations for it -. I recently headed back to Porta's Montclair location for a friend's birthday dinner, and I had a much better experience. First, we were seated downstairs, which had a vibrant bar scene and a classier atmosphere, while the second floor was more like a rowdy beer hall. Even with our table being right in the middle of things, we had room to walk around and socialize without disturbing other diners. For her event, she had ordered a bunch of items for those at the long table to share. While I did not try the few warm appetizers, I did sample two of the three salads. First, there was the Cavolo Nero with Tuscan kale, shaved sunchokes and watermelon radishes, chili-garlic crostini, Parmigiano Reggiano, and a lemon-garlic dressing. Though I did not see or taste any of my beloved sunchokes, the salad was zesty and delicious. I usually prefer my mixed greens topped with more ingredients, but that salad was too good to ignore. Plus, the garlic croutons were great! The Three Trees salad was a shredded blend of radicchio, Belgian endive, arugula, roasted prosciutto, toasted almonds, sliced pears, and a rosemary-shallot vinaigrette. It had a larger variety of textures and flavors, though I did not pick up on any of the supposed prosciutto. Essentially, I really enjoyed both of these salad blends, even though I could not detect all of the ingredients in each. For the main course, there were a bunch of different pizzas we could try. I sampled a slice of the Arugula pie, which was essentially the Marinara version, but topped with fresh arugula and truffle oil. The red sauce was great, and I appreciated the addition of the aromatic oil. I also tried the Betty Pie, which started with a layer of goat cheese béchamel that was seasoned with garlic, thyme, Parmigiano Reggiano, extra virgin olive oil, and sea salt. It was then topped with chopped brussels sprouts. Typically I am not a fan of white pizzas, but this one was phenomenal! Sure, I love crispy sprouts, but that tangy goat cheese spread was the real star that amped up the flavor of the pie. Lastly, after all of the savory items were cleared from the table, they brought out some dessert. I grabbed a piece of Nutella Pizza and adored the creamy hazelnut spread that was sandwiched between two thin layers of dough. It was an indulgent way to finish an already heavy, yet tasty, meal. I should mention that we received excellent service from our friendly server, who constantly checked in on our needs and ensured our water jugs and soda pitchers were full. However, I would also say that I would have loved more serving spoons in the dishes, since they were being shared by a large number of people, including children. I am not a fan of seeing people needing to stick their already-used utensils into communal plates. Despite that, the food remained delicious, but it was otherwise a much better experience in terms of service and atmosphere. Plus, it was a perfect place for a large group event. read more

Porta was better than what I expected. Came here on a friend's recommendation. I did find the menu to be a little limited but you could find at least one dish you could order. I ordered the shrimp Scampi pizza and split the Italian sausage appetizer with another guest at my table. The cocktails were just ok but the pizza was delicious. I would order it again. The Italian sausage appetizer arrived to the table when I was almost done with my pizza lol. To be fair the waitress did say it would take a while.. I just didn't anticipate that it would take almost an hour. Nonetheless it did arrive and was super underwhelming. The sausage looked like it was boiled and then covered in tomato sauce. Definitely wouldn't order it again. Overall stick with the pizza and salads if visiting this spot. I would give Porta a 3.5. read more

Risotto and chicken cutlet combo was out of this world. The 14 pizza had fresh mozzarella that really made the whole pizza come together. The budino was a little runnier than I expected but a treat. I wish the whip cream had more flavor. It needed the caramel drizzle in it! The tiramisu was so good and tasted just like a tiramisu should. The perfect spot. The lighting was just like a backyard summer day but indoors. Perfect date night spot. Very classic and chic decor. Porta was AMAZING! The decor is super on theme with doors on the walls - really cool! Lots of big tables if you're bringing a group. Our server was Peter and he was attentive, outgoing, and generally awesome. My husband and I shared a margherita pizza and flourless chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla gelato, and I had a Peach Door cocktail. They make everything from scratch in house and you can taste the freshness. I'm pretty we devoured that pizza in record time. It was so good!! First time I visited this location the service was so slow but I chalked it up to the restaurant being new and working out the kinks. Came back last night at 5 for a quick dinner before a 7pm show. Boy were we mistaken! We placed our drink order as soon as we sat down. The server was great and said there would be a bit of a wait. 10 mins later they finally arrived so we made sure to put some food in. The food came shortly after but no plates or utensils. We had to finally ask for utensils. Then we ordered a bottle of wine, more drinks and pizza. 20 mins later and no wine. Not sure how long it takes to uncork wine. The staff were all very nice and kept checking in and saying how busy it was. Is this what happens every Saturday? 2 hours to get two rounds of drinks, pizza and pasta. They comped our wine because of the wait which was very generous. Unfortunately $30 for a bowl of gnocchi for "2" and a wait like that will keep me out of here. read more

WHAT WENT WRONG?? i went to porta's montclair today and we wanted to either sit outside on the second floor or right out infront on the sidewalk. the host informed us that the second floor was closed and when we said we asked to sit in the front she tried multiple to try to move inside. then rudley sat us outside and when our server came out didnt say anything to us just dropped the water off. then came out 20 minutes later and said "what do you guys want" all sassy! rude af. man of few words. when the food came out one of the chefs gave it too us and he was very nice and polite. server only got nice when it was time to tip and also didnt check on as at all for over 45 minutes. overall the food was really good the service is horrific and i personally wont come here again! read more

My most recent visit wasn't that great of an experience. And frankly I think people come here more for the bar and dine experience on Bloomfield Ave that's convenient to catch a show before or after or go shopping etc. I went on a random day of the week for a date night. The had about 2 large parties (not pictured) and it took us about 20-30 mins to get 2 cocktails. It came out after our pizza arrived. I had forgotten that the pizza portions are small. Great experience at Porta Montclair! I went to Porta Montclair with my friend and her daughter, and we had a really nice time. We started with the Arancini, which was crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside--so good. The Broccoli Rabe with pistachios, raisins, capers, and olives was another standout--such a unique combo of flavors, and it worked really well. We also tried the house-made mozzarella with Italian bread. The mozzarella was super soft and creamy, and the bread was good too, though I would've liked it a little softer. My friend's daughter ordered the Shrimp Risotto, and she loved it--rich and flavorful. We also shared the Betty Pie Pizza, which was super fresh and had brussels sprouts on it, and it was delish! For drinks, I had an espresso martini, which was fantastic, and my friend tried a mocktail made with blackberry and basil, which was super refreshing and yummy. We finished off with Tiramisu for dessert, and it was the perfect ending to the meal--so creamy and delicious. Overall, great food, awesome drinks, lovely hospitality and great atmosphere. Came here today with a friend! Right off the bat, I came across kind employees who had a good attitude and a smile on their faces. There was live music playing as well. We started off with a Screwdriver and a Matcha Drink. Both were tasty with a good amount of liquor. We ordered Almond French Toast with Scrambled Eggs and a Vegetarian Margherita Pizza. The Almond French Toast and Scrambled Eggs were okay. It wasn't anything special. I would not get the Almond French Toast again. I'd say a 5/10 in taste. The Vegetarian Margherita Pizza was good. I was pleasantly surprised. It had a nice crispiness to it and was a good balance with its taste and texture. The sauce was good and the cheese was cheesy! I would give it a 8/10. Total came out to $63 which wasn't bad for the experience. It's a nice little hang out/date spot. I was hesitant to coming because of the reviews. Decided on going and it was mildly disappointing. We didn't have reservations, but we wanted to scope out the their "secret" rooftop. Unfortunately, right before dinner there was a torrential downpour. So, only bar seating was available as they were full all night. They did offer the second floor for a donation of $20. I don't mind bar seating and high tops in the area. But, what they failed to tell you is that you have to go to the bar to order drinks and food. I ordered a drink that was NOT drinkable, too much alcohol. And, I can hold my liquor. The pizza was pretty good. I don't think I can see myself returning. read more

I was extremely disappointed from the start because the sole reason my friend and I went to this restaurant was because of the rooftop. Upon arrival, they told me the roof was closed and seemed to have a flyer of every day the roof was closed in July. Why was I allowed to book it online? They did let me sit in a big booth with only two people so I did appreciate that. No special service or free side/app for the inconvenience (which I've gotten from other restaurants in Montclair). Wine was well-priced, we got a bottle of Prosecco for $30. Gnocchi was good but only was served in "double" portion. That dish was NOT double. I could've eaten the whole thing. It was delicious but incredibly small. My friend and I also got the focaccia which was good but we def wished we had a sauce with it. You had to PAY for bread & butter. You usually get that for free at a nice italian restaurant. Also the parmesan was not fresh which is something I'd expect from a nice italian restaurant. We love the Porta's in Asbury Park so we decided to come check out this one in Monclair. It's brick oven pizza and located right on Bloomfield Ave. Same set up as the one in AP . Being that it was so beautiful out we sat outside. It was Memorial Day so it was not crowded at all and we were served quickly. We order the meatballs and they were really good! This one of those very unique and hip trendy spots. From outside you cannot tell and/or gage what are you walking in to but please give this place a try. The food is amazing - so much flavor. Every dish has a personal size to it but if you don't mind, you will not regret it. It is not cheap as this place serves drink but it is a must try. Our waiter was very at-tent and knew the menu. Enjoyed giving Porta a try for lunch recently. It was good that the pizzas were so filling because we were starving when we showed up but left full and with leftovers. We got the Margherita pizza (which was our favorite of the two) as well as the chippy which was a white pizza absolutely slathered In mozzarella and olive oil. Not sure I know what I'm missing, but another glorified pizzeria with a bar. No issues with the setting, actually like what they've done with the place. Open pizza making (kitchens) are always cool. Love to watch the preparation and skills of the cooks. Our server wasn't the best. Seemed forgetful. Classic when my daughter ordered the pork belly. All of our food came out except her dish. When we inquired about it, the server told us "I think we're out of it." Shorty after, another employee came over and said "Your pork belly will be right out." About 3-5 minutes later a manager brings it out. When our server came back, he noticed the dish and asked us "How did you get that?" I felt like responding, "From the restaurant across the street!" This pizza was TOP TIER!!! It was perfectly sauced and the crust was so fluffy. The San Marzano tomato's really set it over the top. We tried to order a Caesar salad, but they don't have it and our waitress recommended the Cavolo Nero as a substitute. That also, was so good, and I don't even like kale!! The fresh mozzarella was amazing, just be sure to order it with the side of bread because it doesn't come with it. The resturant itself is super cool. I'm a long time fan of the Asbury and Jersey City Portas so I knew I had to give the new location a try. This location is smaller than I anticipated but still has the same Porta vibes. My friends and I spontaneously walked in on a Friday night. They were booked reservation wise but we snagged a small table by the bar, these are up for grabs first come first served. This is the move because you can still order food and drinks without being rushed out for the next rez. We were there about 3 hours and no one once implied that we needed to leave. The drinks were refreshing and delicious. They have a big selection of wine, beer, and cocktails. We split some pizzas and a salad. My favorite hands down is the carbonara pie. I'm a sucker for a cracked egg on pizza. Food was definitely on par with the other locations. All in all, I will definitely return! read more
