The ambiance and location are very nice and convenient and just steps away from the NJ Transit parking lot area (note the restaurant also has a dedicated parking lot as well). We ate here around 1:30PM on a Saturday and found the restaurant moderately busy which we figured was a good sign. Note that there are multiple entrances into the restaurant so you'll want to make sure you actually find the hostess desk so you can make sure you get seated properly. The venue itself is pretty expansive, featuring a dining foyer, then bar area with high tops and then another larger dining area towards the back. Our waiter was friendly and attentive though we found most of the food to be quite salty. We started off with their daily soup (a chicken tortilla-type one) as it was cold outside and found it extremely over-salted. For our mains we ordered a double-cheeseburger and the fish and chips which both came highly recommended on the menu. The burger was pretty solid and a hearty portion of food, though I was disappointed it didn't come with fries which have to be ordered separately (~$7-$9 upcharge depending on whether you get Parmesan or not). I think the meat is Pat La Frieda which is high quality and was pretty stuffed after eating it. The onion rings were also tasty (though again, quite salty) and were a generous portion which I was pleased considering they're $12. Finally, the fish & chips my partner ordered were solid though again, really salty. Overall, I'd recommend coming here if you're looking for a nice, simple place to get a burger and the basics. Their menu is pretty extensive featuring everything from chicken pot pies, quesadillas and fish but I'd recommend sticking to the classics. 2/5 for the food, 4/5 for the ambiance/service. read more

Warm weekends called for outside dining, so we tried Egan & Sons in Montclair for the first time. The wait wasn't too long for how many parties were waiting to be seated outside. The outside area is very cute with some hanging lights hung around for when the sun beings to set. I ordered their vegan Kale and Mushroom rice bowl and I'm still amazed at how flavorful it was. It's definitely time for me to update my Egans review! They've had a glow up over the last few years - it's become my go-to spot in Montclair for a casual night. They have revamped their outdoor area and on nice days, this is the perfect spot to hang out and grab a drink. Love the outdoor bar and the variety of seating. This also makes the time pass quickly if waiting for an indoor table! The food is always solid, it's an elevated bar menu. You can get the typical bar staples plus so much more. On my last visit, I had the most delicious grilled salmon. It was a large portion and cooked perfectly. I'm also a sucker for their truffle parm fries, they are so thin, crispy, and flavorful. I recommend ordering a few things to share so you get to try a few things! The bar area is spacious here but it does still get very crowded on Friday and Saturday nights. There is plenty of seating, especially in the nice weather with the outdoor area, so don't let that deter you. Parking can be tricky - skip the lot and just look for a spot on the street! read more

WHAT DO WE WANT?? ACCESSIBLE SEATING!! WHEN DO WE WANT IT?! NOW!! Hot take: if there's going to be outdoor and patio seating, the chairs should be MORE comfortable not less so. Many a warm night out has been ruined by rickety chairs, seat arms that dig into my thighs, or seats with deep recline that cut circulation off to my short legs. I was disappointed when my party of 3 was seated on the patio and I had to wedge myself in the chair. Refusing to sit like that the better part of an hour, I had a fat pep-talk with myself (iykyk) and went inside and asked the hostess to swap me out for an armless chair. We subbed one of the indoor wood chairs for my seat and it was SOOOO much better. Like I can't even describe it. Idgaf what it is - you dear reader should feel empowered to ask for what you need. I am encouraging Egan as well as any other vendor I come into contact with this summer to incorporate armless chairs and bench seating in their outdoor seating options. Large people need them, folks with mobility devices need them - a range of paying customers need them. This is such an easy fix and a great way to signal to your customers that you truly "see" and value them. On to the food (since I could now breathe after changing my chair). The specials lineup was great. I added the onion rings with thousand island as my side dish to a grilled shrimp caesar. The other folks in my party had soft shell crab tacos and a shrimp tortilla salad. We had truffle Mac for the table. The salads were a bit bland and needed some salt and pepper but were refreshing on a hot spring day. The onion rings were fantastic! And I enjoyed the creaminess of the mac and I'm not usually a creamy mac person. I loved my drink, too. Service was attentive and the vibe outside was nice. I got a mix of sun and shade with the overhead umbrella. Given the choice I'll always go where I don't need to play musical chairs to be comfortable. Came here last year and had to come back again. Somehow we always end up getting there late night but it's never a problem. The vibe reminds me of a few bars from atl combined so I always feel a little at home here when we visit. We came again also because of how good the food was last time. The late night menu has expanded a bit from the previous year but we're not complaining. Last year we tried the sliders and the tacos and obviously it brought us back. This year we got the tacos again as well as the fish and chips. Everything was so hot and came up pretty quick. Tacos were as good as we remember if not better and the fish and chips was awesome really authentic I feel. Wanted to be out on a saturday night somewhere outdoorsy but not too far away from home and so Egan and Sons came to mind. We saw this place back in August when we went to Halcyon. Apparently they now split when it used to be just one ownership before. I guess thats why they kinda share the outdoor space at the back. Anyway, i wanna note that the host today (9/17/22) was very welcoming and had such pleasant personality from the time we arrived at around 6:30pm and when we left. Didnt get his name but you can also tell how pleasant he is from his interaction with the rest of the guests. Same goes to, Chelsea, who attended to us tonight. The menu generally accommodates all kinds of "eaters" from snack eaters, to sandwich eaters to meat and salad eaters lol I think the food is not exactly exquisite but they are pretty good. I got the Arugula Orzo salad with salmon which was good. I liked that there wasnt too much goat cheese there as it is a strong flavor for me. My husbands Burger order was okay. I dont think I'll order that for myself next time as there were pieces of meat I couldnt chew and the bun didnt hold the meat well and just went soggy. The East Coast Oyster that we got to start were delicious though. I guess there apps are better than the entrees. Anyway, still a cool place to hangout and have a few good drinks. A long time Montclair staple, Egan and Sons, have something for everyone! Good ambiance indoors that converts to a lounge at night, decent bar drinks, and good food. Today, I had their Caldo Soup Special, which was very tasty and a blackened chicken sandwich, was alright but had way too much ranch. Service was okay, just nothing to write home about, given that we visited on a weekend afternoon. The soup did not come with a spoon originally, however this mistake was corrected immediately. Soda refills could have been more timely, and the condiments requested for our sandwiches and fries were forgotten. The ambiance is spacious, which also includes an ample outdoor area. Will I go back? Sure, on the request of friends, with the expectation of just average service, and nothing spectacular. read more

Egan & Sons was an impulse decision yesterday. I had an early dismissal from work due to the New Year's weekend, so I didn't get to explore a new NYC spot for lunch. On the way home on the train, I texted my recently sick top-tier Montclair chum who's been cooped up inside for most of the holidays, and boom - instant plans, instant meal. I hopped off at Walnut Street and wandered down the street. Who says NJ Transit isn't convenient? I came here once years ago and was a little thrown when I walked in from Walnut; I had no idea the official entrance was actually in the back, which features a personal parking lot. (My chum used it and it was one of the most chaotic situations I've ever seen, with several valet-esque spots and a lot of drivers looking agitated and confused. Everyone got through it in one piece from what I could tell, but that is a fender bender waiting to happen.) As a result, I had to awkwardly walk all the way through the restaurant to get to the host in the back, who then...walked me back close to the door I came in at. There was enough signage for me to figure out what to do, but the logistics could and should definitely be tinkered with - I'm sure they get tons of foot traffic like me. It was pretty crowded for mid-afternoon, but I'm sure the holidays threw off a lot of peoples' eating schedules, including my own. I secured a high-top near the bar, and was promptly attended to by the waitress, who took my drink order while I waited for my chum. The obvious cocktail choice was the Maple Old Fashioned ($15) from their specials menu. It took a little long to show up, but was definitely decent for what it was. Because it relied quite a bit on a type of maple syrup, it was sweeter than I would have preferred (I think it's easy to forget that bourbon itself is one of the sweeter spirits so if you're going to double down on that you have to be careful). They could have emphasized the maple through some type of garnish or flavored rim, which would have had the flavor without being overpowering. Since I was eating almost two hours later than I normally would (see above reference to holiday schedule), I was pretty famished. We split the Truffle Mac & Cheese app ($16ish), and I got a plain hamburger medium-rare ($12ish). The Mac & Cheese was divisive at our table. My chum didn't like it at all because of the inclusion of the chives. I also wasn't a fan (they're completely unnecessary based on the flavor, etc.), but they were also easy to pick out if it was a problem. Beyond that though, I thought it was excellent and was perfectly happy to gobble down the lion's share. The burger was the highlight for me. The cattle was slightly undercooked (definitely rare), but I actually prefer rare and just play it safe when I'm ordering them from a place I'm not too familiar with so I don't end up with something mooing on my plate. My favorite bovine in the area is the Cloverleaf, and I'll happily order rare from them without thinking. It was juicy without being greasy, and the bun had a nice density to it - not too thick though and easy to munch. The service was good. It wasn't a situation where we were on the clock (again, holiday schedules), so even if it was on the slower side it wasn't an issue at all. Our waitress was pleasant and stopped by throughout the meal consistently, even though I think she had quite a few tables to navigate. And the price point was definitely reasonable for the area, maybe even on the cheaper side honestly. I don't hit the bovine as often as I used to, but this was one of the better ones in recent memory. read more

Today the owner (Mrs. Egan) treated me and my daughter with such racist disrespect after frequenting this place for over 20 years. It is disgraceful how she treated a customer who frequents the restaurant for many different levels and occasions. I explained to her we spend hundreds to thousands of dollars during each visit. Mrs. Egan stated "you are always returning stuff". I explained to her the apple martini was made incorrectly and you can clearly see that is is a brownish yellow and not green. Mrs. Egan stated a apple martini includes vodka and green pucker. We did not ask her to comp us or give us anything free. After speaking with her bartender, she realized that she was WRONG on every level she said nothing to us and held her head down and walk away in shame instead of apologizing to use for being racist, rude and inconsiderate. The bartender remade the drinks after not asking us if we wanted and drink. Mrs. Egan acted so horrible, we respectfully declined the drink, paid the tab and left. Mrs. Egan should have apologized for speaking and treated us with such racism. We will not go back to Egan & Sons Montclair, NJ. She could send us the respectable apology we deserve and I will explain to al l to stop patronage Egan and Sons and stay clear of the racist Mrs. Egan. read more

Their buffalo wings on the other hand, are absolutely exceptional and you can tell their ranch dressing is made in-house. This is a must order! Rounded things off with a draft beer. I went to Egan & Sons tonight with my siblings. We all ate our food! There were little to no leftovers. I got the shrimp taco salad and it was great! I should have asked for more vinaigrette but I was too hungry, ha. I tried the truffle fries but wasn't a fan. Someone ordered the fried chicken sandwich and really enjoyed it. The service was pretty fast and the waitress was kind. She recommended the flourless chocolate cake and it is GOOOODDDDD. So rich and definitely a dessert to share. The ambiance can go casual or classy depending on the time. The lights are dimmed in the evening so it can be a little romantic. There's outdoor seating in the back which is a plus. I was the first to arrive and the host sat me in my area for a large group. The other girls started to come in one by one. I went to order a happy hour drink and they informed me it was only from 2-5pm not 3-6pm like I seen online. That sucked. As we sat trying to figure out our drinks Conner, our waiter, introduced himself. He was nothing short of a great server. You can tell he was super busy but he got it done. He was on point and super nice. I didn't order any food but I did have a vodka tonic which was just ok, Cabernet which was a real smooth taste and nice pour and mimosa which was super tasty. Great place to catch up with friends! I've driven past a few times and have also been told their food was great and I wasn't disappointed. It's huge inside and a little confusing because the hostess stand is at the back of the restaurant (farther from the street). We started with maple Buffalo boneless wings which were delicious. We also had the Parmesan truffle fries which were a little heavy on the truffle oil but not bad. We got the double bacon cheese burger which was one of the specials and it was amazing.
