Everything pretzels

Came here Saturday night for the live entertainment. The band was great and we had nice seats close to stage. Server was friendly and did a good job checking on us. Beers were $4 during happy hour which was great. Had some wings and pretzels and no complaints. Great local spot if you're looking for a bar atmosphere or if you're more low key and want to go earlier for a drink and app or some love entertainment. They offer all different options

Attended an OutMontclair speed friending event at Just Jake's. The space felt like a classic bar/tavern--nothing fancy, but functional. There were a ton of tables set up, likely to accommodate the event, and I really appreciated the built-in stage--great spot for live performances or future events. The one downside was service; although the plan was for wait staff to take food and drink orders during the event, they never made it over to our side. Could've been a communication hiccup. Overall, a solid venue with potential for community gatherings.

Just arrived in New Jersey and thought I'd give Just Jake's a try. From the reviews I read, I thought I'd have a great meal at a place with a great atmosphere. I was right about the atmosphere, but the food and service were not the best. The best part of the meals was the wings. The pretzel we had for an appetizer was not very tasty. Both the sandwich and the burger were ok, at best. The service was pretty slow, at first. Once we received our food, the service did pick up. I had ordered an Iced Tea. I had returned it because it was not drinkable. I had requested a Coke instead. Little did we know that this place did not provide free refills. We found out when our bill arrived. Not only that, the Iced Tea was still on the bill. The ambiance was the best part of this visit. That alone will not get me back to Just Jake's.

The food menu has such a great variety. There are times the Chef specials will have you thinking you were in an upscale restaurant. What dive bar is offering pairing events. Jakes!!! Try to catch a comedy show or a band. You won't be disappointed. The food and service are great.

Rum runner

So came here on a Friday evening about 630 pm. Met with 2 other ladies here. Got there and was greeted by a bearded gentleman who informed us that he had to wait for the hostess for us to be seated. Well.... that took almost 10 minutes. We were finally seated at a high top table close to the door. We sat and got greeted by Payton as our waitress a few minutes later. She asked to take our drink order, ordered Rum runner for myself, sangria and chardonnay. Unfortunately, my rum runner was VERY weak and my friend's sangria tasted like lime juice. I asked for more dark rum in my drink and my friend returned her drink, ordering a margarita instead. Well, the additional dark rum took over 10-15 minutes. HOW, WHY? I even had to check to see when it was coming back.... Food- had a burger, med well with truffle fries - the burger was done correctly, tasteful. But I didn't expect my truffle fries to be crinkle fries with parmesan. I've always gotten shoestring fries as truffle fries. My friend got wings, but wanted them a very specific way and wasn't too please with it. My other friend got sliders and yam fries. They were very pleased with the yam fries. Ambiance - good location, but on a Friday night as with all of Montclair spots in the near location...parking can be a hassle. Outside seating before getting to the entrance and good sized indoor seating. There was room for bands to play, but none played while we were there. Crowd was of mixed ages, but mostly 20s-30s. There was music playing and it wasn't extremely loud as we were still able to hold a conversation Service- Payton our waitress seemed very busy. We had to ask for napkins and utensils and that was provided by another individual. We had to wait for items such as mayo and sauce for our food. Towards the end, we asked Payton for our check and she replied "Oh, you are guys finally satisfied?" WHOA....that was not necessary. We brushed it off, paid our bill and left. But was not happy with that comment as we expected to have utensils, mayo and drinks made the way we expect them to be made. I am not too enthused to come back, but may give it another try with a different waitress for sure

Just Jake's is just that, just Jake's. A bar hang out spot for all the twenty-somethings that likely go to MSU. It's a staple in Montclair and a welcome place for folks considering the town is largely BYO. In my visits here is been average as so with the latest. Came on a Friday night after a concert to find that another one of sorts was going on here with a band doing 90's hit music covers which was cool. Not without a $8 cover charge though. This is fine, but initially we were just gonna grab some apps and drinks and sit outside. It's not like we could sneak in since they stamped and checked our hands so that's kinda lame. When we sat down I could already tell the waiter girl we had was ready to clock out. Her hurried speech, body language and constantly checking on our table told me so. This didn't surprise me though. Other visits here were about the same attitude wise. The food was average. Sesame Wings, pulled pork sliders, nachos all just were alright. The nachos can easily be shared with 4 people and the prices for it all were pretty decent so that's the upside. If you're looking for a spot that has low price apps, some drinks and a younger crowd Just Jake's is it.

Great place to grab a burger before a show at the Wellmont. Typical bar fare like chicken wings and French dip.

We ate here around 1:30PM on a Saturday and found the restaurant moderately busy which we figured was a good sign. Note that there are multiple entrances into the restaurant so you'll want to make sure you actually find the hostess desk so you can make sure you get seated properly. The venue itself is pretty expansive, featuring a dining foyer, then bar area with high tops and then another larger dining area towards the back. Our waiter was friendly and attentive though we found most of the food to be quite salty. We started off with their daily soup (a chicken tortilla-type one) as it was cold outside and found it extremely over-salted. For our mains we ordered a double-cheeseburger and the fish and chips which both came highly recommended on the menu. The burger was pretty solid and a hearty portion of food, though I was disappointed it didn't come with fries which have to be ordered separately (~$7-$9 upcharge depending on whether you get Parmesan or not). I think the meat is Pat La Frieda which is high quality and was pretty stuffed after eating it. The onion rings were also tasty (though again, quite salty) and were a generous portion which I was pleased considering they're $12. Finally, the fish & chips my partner ordered were solid though again, really salty. Overall, I'd recommend coming here if you're looking for a nice, simple place to get a burger and the basics. Their menu is pretty extensive featuring everything from chicken pot pies, quesadillas and fish but I'd recommend sticking to the classics. 2/5 for the food, 4/5 for the ambiance/service.

This one pound mozzarella stick definitely fulfilled that criteria. It was so gigantic it was almost like getting a workout in just to lift it. The outside was heavily breaded with bread crumbs and the top was sprinkled with parmesan cheese and chopped scallions. Even the dipping cup was supersized to accommodate the diameter of the stick! Typically, I would have posted until after my I finished my oversized food compilation project. However, it's being posted early because The Brookdale is permanently closing its doors. I am truly sad to hear they will no longer be in business, but their three sister restaurants at 1109 Broad Street will still remain open. #thebrookdale #thebigcheese #bloomfieldnj

Review: Café Faubourg - Montclair…read more Café Faubourg is one of Montclair's true gems--an authentic French bistro that feels as if it were lifted straight from a quiet Parisian street and placed right in the heart of town. From the moment you step inside, the ambiance sets the tone: warm lighting, intimate tables, and that unmistakable bistro charm that makes every meal feel like a small escape. The food is consistently excellent, starting with their hummus, which is surprisingly standout for a French spot. Smooth, flavorful, and beautifully plated, it's the perfect way to begin the meal and pairs wonderfully with their fresh bread. The steak frites is a must-order and easily one of the best in the area. The steak is tender and cooked exactly to preference, richly seasoned without being heavy, and served alongside crisp, golden fries that are everything you want in a classic bistro dish. It's simple, authentic, and prepared with the kind of care that elevates a traditional favorite into something memorable. Service at Café Faubourg is warm and attentive without being intrusive, contributing to the relaxed elegance of the experience. Whether you're dropping in for a casual dinner or celebrating a special occasion, the staff makes you feel welcome and unrushed. For anyone looking for an authentic French bistro experience in Montclair--excellent food, inviting ambiance, and truly charming service--Café Faubourg delivers every time.

With the bar…read moreraised that high, I think it's good for the establishment to know about certain details that impact customer satisfaction. During this visit, the plating of some of the dishes was odd, as whomever did it felt the need to position the food right at the edge of the plates. That made it difficult to eat the dishes without some of the food spilling off the side. Had to push everything to center to avoid this. Again, this was very odd, as it happened on two entrees and one dessert dish and was the first time we've seen this at Faubourg. The lamb duo had a fantastic grilled flavor, but part of it (I believe it may have been shank meat) was loaded with so much salt that it overwhelmed the flavors and was a bit difficult to continue eating. The last comment is admittedly nitpicky, but worth mentioning, as they automatically added a 20% gratuity despite the menu stating that 20% is added for parties of 6 or more. We were a party of two and I was a bit annoyed that they did this. The check also had a place for "additional tip", which was a bit presumptuous after adding the 20%. Overall, the experience was positive with a few hiccups that prevent me from giving 5 stars. Still highly recommended.

We ordered a few things. Spicy Tuna Tartare: wasn't spicy, didn't taste fresh which wasn't a deterrent to me as this isn't a seafood restaurant or fine dining. Next time I'd pass on that. Bavarian Pretzel: amazing. Very tasty. Came out nice and hot. That rarebit cheese sauce? Oh honey that can come home with me anytime. Absolutely delicious. And this is coming from someone who hates that fake cheese, cheese whiz type taste. Margherita Pizza: didn't come out hot which is probably why I wasn't a fan of it. It was pretty mediocre for such a basic pizza. And the food didn't come out all together, so not sure why that didn't come out hot. Wings and waffles: Tasty buffalo wings. The waffles actually taste like funnel cake which was a nice surprise. THEN. The burger came out and that is why this review dropped. It had a small hair on the side of the plate and a closer look at the rest of the plate, you'll see a long hair on the pickle. That was disappointing but happy to have tried the place nonetheless.
