Stopped by with some friends for dinner and some drinks, and while this normally wouldn't have been my first pick, it turned out to be a pretty great bar! Came in on a Thursday night around 8:30 and hostess and waiters were super accommodating to our group of 8 and provided great service. Our table ordered a few beers and some items off the menu (pizza, potato skins, quesadilla, nachos, lemon garlic shrimp, fries & chicken tenders) and everyone was left satisfied. Additionally, their beer selection is great, they have flat screens all around for the games, a pool table, and plenty of seating. It did start to get a bit loud and crowded after 10 but that's to be expected. Overall, my friends and I had a lovely time here and I'll definitely be back! read more

Food- service- ambience- great bar I was there recently for a fundraiser- the owner, Carl & staff were phenomenal. They had a pasta buffet- excellent. Love the atmosphere - & outdoor patio. I highly recommend Just Jake's! read more

I was really excited to try just jakes prior to coming but unfortunately it was a disappointing experience. The food was not bad, but not great. I got the beer battered cod sandwich, onion rings and drinks. The thing that really spoiled my visit was the price for the food. The quality is not worth the price. It's not super expensive but in my opinion could be cheaper. My friend and I each asked for honey mustard with our food and we were charged a dollar for each one. I've had dinner at very expensive restaurants and never been charged for condiments like that. It was a turn off. I don't see myself coming back. Aside from that the staff was great and the outdoor dining experience was very nice. Service was fairly fast. read more

I've been coming here for years! I think it's a bit bothersome that I walk in @ 11:45 pm on a Sunday night close to closing to get turned away, told the bar is closed & there are abt 15 patrons inside and two outside! I was headed in to purchase goods to go, but didn't get the chance to do so or even given an option to be asked by the security guard! Not cool at all and wasn't professional at all! Total turn off read more

Can't come back to this place with a good conscious if I don't leave this review. Tried going in with an expired ID (my 21st was a month ago) and they wouldn't let me in. Had the scannable interim form FROM THE DMV and they didn't even take a look at it. Me trying every way I could to show them that I'm actually 21 gave them the excuse to get more rude and shut me down. It's one thing that you have a policy, it's another thing to feel completely unwelcome under any circumstance because of it. Some empathy and maybe a "I'm sorry, that's how it works, please come back when you have one we'd love to have you!" or something along the lines would've helped me leave the place less sour and excited to come back. read more

Such a fun dive bar with great cover bands focusing on the 1990s. We were definitely the oldest ones there (typically early 20s singles). Good drinks and only once was beer spilled on me by a drunkie. read more

April 2020- I stopped in Friday at 4 to cheer myself up and to pick up a to go order during the Pandemic. First they have a serving window but they are not using it. They are not taking enough precaution in my opinion. Guests are ushered into the little lobby where you pick up your food and sign for your order. Compare that to Bloomfield Steakhouse who is serving food from a window that's not even intended for food service. Credit cards are given over the phone and closed out. There is no signing. It's a contact less transaction. Jake's has the facility to do the same thing. So why aren't they? Second when I got my food home it was overcooked borderline burnt. I ordered sliders and chicken fingers. Both were so overcooked they were dry. Ive been coming to Jakes for about 7 years now and been server top notch food. So I can overlook the overcooked food. They will be back to normal when things get back to normal. But The owners need to begin requiring their team to take more precautions. I appreciate that they are still paying those employees. That's important. But they need to instruct their employees to take more precautions. read more

Solid neighborhood hangout with typical bar food. They have an impressive beer list and overall a nice variety of food. Live music on the weekends is always fun if that's your thing. I personally love the outdoor area the most, much quieter than sitting inside and a lot more open of course. It's very large and recently I haven't had any trouble getting a seat on Friday or Saturday nights when I've visited. Great place to catch a game or some music or to just hang out with a few friends casually. read more

This place is decent but not the best. I bumped into this spot on a random Wednesday and I was starving so decided to give it a try. It satisfied my hunger but not my palate. read more

Hands down the rudest server I've ever had. I don't usually review at all, and it doesn't deserve one-star, but I've never been to a spot where I've felt so baldly unwelcome from the moment we showed up. When we showed up, he told us to go the host stand. At the time I didn't think much of it. In retrospect (and having worked in service) when there's patio seating and you get someone who just sat, you tell the host and just take the seating. But, who cares, right? Nbd I make a joke about how I don't feel like going, and I do this in an exceedingly over the top cartoon voice. He stares at me blankly. Fine? I guess. Again, I might not be as funny as I think. When we finally get sat AT EXACTLY the table we were at before, he come up and asks us what we want. I ask what's on draft and he goes "scan that". I ask again "sure fine but what do you have on draft?" "It's all there ". Doesn't ask us for anything else and just leaves. Keep in mind we are the only the second table there. At this moment, I'm not ticked, I figure he's having a rush indoors or something. He comes back we order. 15 minutes later no drinks. We both got draft beers, we've both been here before, it's nowhere NEAR a full house. Here's where I really remember finally getting mad. I see him, smile and say "hey bud, any news on those beers" He sighs, looks at me, no smile, no shrug, nothing "They're coming, OK?" Like I was crazy for asking Like I was somehow inconveniencing him. I wouldn't have cared if I didn't see the server skip our table something like 4 times before this, read and review everyone for EVERY table around us, and basically focus fire neglect and irritation to myself and my wife. I watched him go through every single beer to the table RIGHT next to ours and give recommendations. He couldn't be bothered to bring my order. When we get our beers, I ask for waters and go to the bathroom. I don't know what happened while I was gone, but my wife sends me a text saying she asked for the check and paid. He doesn't show up to collect until we walk up to the host stand to leave out book, he comes over and still looks pissed AT US. I too him 30% (3 bucks on 10) because frankly, part of me feels this was racial and I just don't want to give him the ammo that "those people don't tip." Maybe the next couple can have a nice time if they're not "the right people." I won't be going back, I hope this server reconsiders career paths and priorities, he has zero business in service. I have over a decade experience in restaurant service, bouncing, serving, and bartending. And I can't begin to tell you how disappointing and easily avoidable that whole experience was. I'm still in a customer facing role, and will be my whole life, and this experience was the very height of lack of training, lack of courtesy, and lack of grace on the servers part. I've never met someone at a restaurant who was so needlessly rude. read more

I was skeptical about this place at first because I thought it would be just another dirty lame bar crowded with annoying people. I ended up having a really good time! We went for a 90s themed night featuring a band called nine deez nite. As a 90s kid it was nostalgic and I really enjoyed the music and they were good performers. The drinks were cheap and the female bartender was attentive and knew the queue. There were a lot of people but I didn't feel like it was so bad I couldn't move. I'd come here again. read more

I had such a great night at Just Jake's. I wanted to pick a place in Montclair that had heated outdoor seating, dog friendly, and vegan. I called ahead to make sure they were dog friendly. Patty, the manager at Just Jake's assured me that they all love dogs. My friend's dog was like the guest of honor. Our waitress got her a dog bowl and Patty snapped pictures of her sitting under the table. Also, the food and atmosphere were both awesome. It was a busy Saturday night in December. Some customers were dressed as Santa. Tables were filled up. The other customers were also happy to see a dog! I am vegan. I got the hummus platter as an appetizer. Loved it! I got the beyond burger as an entree. I highly recommend Just Jake's. Thanks to Patty for such a wonderful night! read more

I've been a patron here since 2011 and have never seen the level of disrespect as I did tonight. I love this establishment and am very disappointed that they would deny me and my partner entry because they didn't believe we were over 21. To clarify, we both had valid IDs that showed we were wayyyyy over 21. I wouldn't normally post about this, but they rubbed it in by holding onto one of our IDs. I called the cops and then the bouncer threw it at us. I then told the cops it's ok and not to come, but then the bouncer and management/owner said, "CALL THE COPS." I'm shocked and that's why I think people should read this. Hopefully others aren't treated this way moving forward. read more

Jake's feels like home, where the people serving you want to help you and make sure your satisfied. The food is excellent considering it is a bar / restaurant. Some of my family's favorites are chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, soups, burgers, fries, onion rings and quesadillas. They also have live music, painting & wine nights, comedy nights, several indoor and outdoor TV's for sporting events. The patio is really nice for eating outside especially in the warmer weather. School of Rock Montclair's concerts often are held at Jakes which makes Jakes feel like home to the families of School of Rock Montclair. Patty does an excellent job running the local bar restaurant. This is especially apparent when they are packed with people and she is able to accommodate everyone so quickly. read more

You can't be too critical of a place that makes no bones about being a semi-casual place to dine and have a great time out. Hey, it's in the name! The food is slightly above average with the side salad and veggie burger. Unfortunately, the service is slow and sporadic inside, forget about outside. Better get their around 6-7 PM if you want to stay late to avoid the steep cover charge for the bands, and the impossible Montclair parking, especially the narrow lot across the street on the weekends. This place is a make shift restaurant/bar turned into a club with chairs being removed for the bands near the stage, dark lights, and loud music, making it sometimes impossible to have a conversation. I am sure people get into arguments with the bouncer regarding the bathroom use with having to pay a cover charge; they seem pretty intimidating. Speaking of which, the bathrooms are always filthy with excessive toilet paper and foul odors even on a slow night. Case in point, it's a place for 20 something's and college students to hang out, and is not that expensive, but when you hit your 30's, it's no longer your scene. read more

Came here for the first time last night to watch Garden State Radio (an amazing cover band btw) and had a great time! $8 cover charge with a complimentary coat check. Nice venue to watch shows in. Plenty of room on the floor to move around and dance like an idiot with your friends. They have a main bar with a few beers available on tap and a mini bar on the side. Majority of the night, my friends and I hung out by the mini bar. Cocktails were okay. Liquor I though was a little pricey for what you actually get. $8 for a small cup and about $13 for a larger one. Beer was super cheap though! Bartender was nice and attentive even with the place being as busy as it was. They have a nice patio outside which I can imagine being very nice in the summertime. The main bar seemed a little sloppy, it had a ton of money on it and was a little sticky, but whatever. I wouldn't come back here on a regular night personally, but would absolutely come back to watch another show. read more

Back in college, my friends and I would come here on the weekends since there isn't really a nightlife scene in Montclair. I remember paying a cover charge of I believe $8 or so. It really is just a bar that happens to have a stage. The live music is great, but it really isn't a place where you can socialize. It's generally people with their friends so don't expect to come here and find your soulmate. I'll go if I'm in the area, but I won't go out of my way to come here if that makes sense. read more

i've been to Jake's more times than I can count over the past 10 years but this review will be separate of any of my past experiences here. Went to Jake's one night because they were having trivia. Tried this place twice because it was recommend by two separate friends. We were seated quickly both times despite it being busy. However from there it just went down hill. Wait staff seemed to not know the menu, had attitude and it took forever to get our drinks. Drinks I feel are very expensive for what you get and the food is very average, I wouldn't even consider it good bar food. We were looking forward to the live music but we must've chosen bad Friday nights where they had issues with set up or something because we never were able to hear any live music read more

I would recommend this place. Im giving it 4 stars for what it is. A cool sports bar with a cool dog friendly patio and a long beer list. Husband and I came in on Sunday afternoon with our dog. The patio is divided into a dog friendly side and a non dog friendly side. The beer menu was pretty good! The food menu was pretty short but it did have vegan And vegetarian options so I was happy. We ordered the hummus for our appetizer and we were happily surprised with the portion size. For our entre I ordered the beyond burger and jt was ok, like any beyond burger. They also had salads and a meatless potato gnocchi dish on the menu. My husband ordered this seafood quesadilla that was part of the specials menu. It looked and smelled delicious. The service was good and they brought a water bowl for my dog. I will be coming back. read more

One of the few Montclair gems that you can actually drink in usually a bar this close to a college campus is filled with fake IDs and sticky floors but just Jakes has none of that. Great food and live bands.will consider going there time after time.food is good and no trouble at all.

Went here over the weekend looking for a place to grab a couple of appetizers and drinks. Montclair has such few restaurants with an actual bar so my fiancée and I figured we would finally give Just Jake's a try! The good- I really liked the outdoor patio space; it was spacious with a bunch of tables, a big tv, music playing and some string lights wrapped around. They had a really good selection of draft beers and bottles/cans. We didn't get any other sort of drink menu so I can't say if they have any interesting cocktail type drinks The pork and yucca poutine was also good! The bad- We arrived around 9pm-ish on a Saturday night and were told that there was a cover change ($8) to get in...not sure why, maybe there was going to be live music or something? We asked if there was a cover to sit outside as well and the guy said no so that's what we went with. The downside to that (and I feel like most places are like this) is that the service outside is always so much slower and less attentive than if you're inside/at the bar. We were seated with menus and it had to have been about 10 minutes before a server came to us and told us that she was told about our table 5 mins prior and forgot... We just brushed that off though, put our whole drink/food order in and it came out pretty fast. The issue with the food was that halfway into eating, my fiancée bit into the chicken quesadilla and felt something hard...when he pulled it out, it was a piece of plastic that had gotten in there. Honestly, at that point it was hard enough to track a server down on the patio and we didn't want to bother with speaking to a manager or anything about it so we paid and left. It was just a shame because once he found that in his food it really turned us off from wanting to eat anymore. If it wasn't for that experience with the food I would probably come back to try sitting inside/hanging at the bar but I'm going to have to pass... read more

Everyone meets here before a concert or show at the Wellmont. It's decent place, service was excellent, food was adequate and so are the prices. They got us in an out so we were able to see the show. I don't see it as anything but a quick bite or a late night drink. read more

A well known regular patron of the bar was diagnosed with Covid (everyone heard about it-- it's a small town) in March 2021. That "regular" came to the bar to allegedly pick up food only 3-5 days into his "quarantine." The bartenders were well aware of the diagnosis and still allowed him into the bar area to pick up his food and chatted with the patron at the bar for a moment before he left. It was very upsetting to see that Jakes wasn't taking Covid protocols seriously. (This occurred before any vaccine was available). EVERYONE knew this guy had been diagnosed with Covid only a few days before and he was now inside the bar. It was only a few minutes -- but that's all it takes to make a room full of people sick. It was very upsetting. I haven't been back to Jakes since then. It's a great local spot for a burger but -- this was a big thumbs down disappointment. read more

Was really excited to try this place but was underwhelmed. I got the cajun garlic wings and they were undercooked the first time. When I cut the wing open the meat was still pink. When I asked for new wings the ones I got next had brown meat. I didn't end up eating the wings. The waitstaff also seemed overwhelmed needing to remind the waitress three times to bring water. The bang was fun and cool and that was the only redeeming quality. read more

Allow me preface this by saying that I've been to Just Jake's for brunch a few times several years back and it was great. The restaurant area in the back was quaint, cozy, and decorated nicely. Now? It looks like who-did-it-and-ran. Tables strewn everywhere, blasting flatscreen TVs surrounding the room, and stacks of board games all over the place. What in the holy hell? No place settings, no decor, nothing. It was no longer a restaurant space...it was an all-purpose room. Our menus were stained with God-knows-what and mine had a hair lodged in between the plastic. Beautiful. Had it not been 10 degrees out and had we not parked right outside, then I would have left. Brunch menu options were underwhelming. We both ordered a 3 eggwhite omelet with spinach, mushrooms, and onions. Our omelets were insanely greasy but the "mini potato pancakes" were as dry as construction paper. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Toast was stale, stale, stale. Even my club soda tasted strange. We were the only ones dining there until a trio of clueless out-of-town tourists joined the "WTF party". I felt awful because I recommended and brought my trusting friend to this pathetic place. I am the Yelp Queen for God's sake. This kind of crap will ruin my reputation! Brunch? Just Jakes? Just terrible. Just don't. read more
