I love coming to this brewery. The beers and atmosphere are great. However, my review would have been even higher if I wasn't paying a cover charge to listen to a band when I only was having 1 beer and leaving. I visited this brewery for a Caribbean event. To learn this brewery is black owned was worth the drive. It's a spot where you can bring your own food which is great. I'm not a beer drinker but that cherry frozen slushy was tasty and strong, I also had another drink but ain't can't remember what didn't try I believe it was one of the ginger beers (alcoholic). Let me disclaimer this: this place was on my list of spots to visit, but I won't be returning. I sat at the bar for 20 minutes before someone asked if I wanted a drink. Keep in mind, the owner was present along with two bartenders. They all made eye contact with me at least once during those 20 minutes. I even asked one of the bartenders how it works, unsure if I should order where they had the iPads or at my seat. Instead of answering, he said, 'I don't know who came first.' The report of my first trip here (and my last) will be full of similar complaints to many of the previous reviews here on Yelp. #1 - the beer I had tasted like I was sucking on a penny. It just had an unpleasant taste. #2 - the bartender (the only staff member on the night I visited) didn't really seem interested in hospitality. As patrons entered, he didn't look up and smile or make any welcoming gestures. As folks waited to order, he seem to pretend not to notice them, so he could finish up what ever conversation he was in the middle of. #3 - this was an open mic night - and the audience for the music on this night was made up 100% of other musicians waiting to go on - for the rest of the small crowd, the volume of the live music was excruciating - causing several of the patrons to just leave, as conversation became impossible. Montclair Brewery is a great brewery the service is friendly. I liked the selection of beers and it is doggie friendly. There is no food but they sell snacks and you can bring your own food too. The ambience is amazing, I would come again here with my puppy and some food. 10/10 brewery read more

I've been here 2 or 3 times and it's always solid. Back in July we sat in one of the curtain covered cabanas on the back patio. Service was great and they had a food truck/grillmaster on property. Back in June, we sat at the bar and enjoyed pizza we brought in from across the street at Dough. I love breweries but some go too far in their passion projects (lord if I see another bitter IPA or weird stout) but this spot keeps me satisfied as a person who enjoys sours and drinkable IPAs. I got a guava IPA this summer that I enjoyed so much I grabbed a 4 (or 6) pack on the way out. Great service too - when we brought in food but no utensils, the owner went out of his way to source a couple plastic forks for us. Pleased to support this Black-owned business! PS if you're fat the bar stools are a solid choice for inside seating. In warmer months I recall the outside chairs having arms or being the thin folding jawns - the cabanas had bench style seating. read more

We were in the area for dinner and decided to swing by for a drink afterwards. There was a fun vibe as soon as we walked in on a Saturday night. The space was festive and the tunes were up my alley. The beer was very good -- we enjoyed it and even got two packs to go. We had their IPA and a Belgian. There were a number of beers on tap and I would've tried others but we had to go. The two packs of 4 were $45, which I thought was a bit steep compared to other breweries. One was $20 and the other $25. I didn't see their prices posted on the fridge ... I don't live in the area so I'll get to enjoy them at home. If you're in the area, give them a try. We parked at the train station lot across the street. read more

Great place to hang out and chill. Everyones always friendly and treats us like family. Natalie is our fave! The fact I can bring my pup inside is a huge plus. The back area is nice to enjoy during the warmer months. I dont drink beer but I just found that the lavendar beer is nice and light enough for me to enjoy. My husband loves their IPA selection. This place was so chill! A group of us planned to meet up here and hang for a bit and we stayed for hours sipping delicious beers and chatting. The fact that you can bring your own food and there are some great choices near by is the bonus. I can't wait for the weather to heat up and the outdoor seating becomes available. I highly suggest the Raspberry Holiday Jam Ale (2) and the Ginger beer shandy (18). We started with flights and ended with tall glasses of our faves. The staff were cool AND on top of that they have a discount for educators. How's they know we needed a discount for our hard work and low pay. MONTCLAIR: we have been wanting to visit Montclair Brewery for a couple of years and finally made it! It was worth the wait and the trip to get there! Leashed dogs are allowed inside their tasting room and at their outdoor tables in front of the building. Heaters and fire pits are roaring to let you stay warm. In nicer weather, there is an outdoor beer garden in the back. And, you may bring your own food! The tap list has over 20 beers and the Frog Hollow Orange Wheat was so refreshing. You can take cans and bottles to-go, fill a growler, and get non-alcoholic drinks too. The indoor space has an old-style feel, which wasn't what we expected for downtown Montclair, but quickly embraced it for its warm and tavern-like feel. If your dog needs a break, the town is a beautiful place to walk around! read more

The girls and I got together to celebrate Jamaica's independence at this event at the brewery. When I arrived I parked on the street not too far. We walked in and the brewery and nice. The event was being held in the back and we were too early for the band but we did enjoy some music with the DJ. They also had a food vendor with Jamaican food. The brewery is black owned and they are of Jamaican decent. I drank the flavored hard seltzer which was good and only $7.50. We enjoyed our time there. read more

An excellent brewery. I went here just to enjoy a good local beer, and everything was perfect. In particular I loved their "Black is Beautiful" selection. I was so happy that Montclair Brewery came to Barrel and Flow Fest in Pittsburgh, PA. Their Fragile Like a Bomb Wild Ale was one of my favorites, and the competition was stiff. I appreciated that the brewer took the time to share the inspiration for the beer (RGB, RIP) and its use of baobab fruit. The flavor did not disappoint. This is going to come across as a weird review, but that's only a reflection of my mixed feelings about this place. I've been here three times, twice en route to Brick and Dough Pizza across the road (grabbing a four-pack), and another time when we just sat out the back drinking Pilsners and watched some folks playing corn hole (um, what is it with breweries and corn hole?). I've also tried their stuff during promotions at Cool Vines. I'm hardly an expert on beer, but feel like I can comment on the brewery's offerings in a general way: Atmosphere and general vibe: it's haphazard inside and not particularly welcoming. There's a lovely mural but the interior looks like a storage room for the most part- def needs a 'glow up'. Outside area: again, unwelcoming and the back looks like a carpark when it's still light. The string lights at night are effective at creating a cosy, festive glow - but only after dark. The live music can be enjoyed from other food venues nearby so don't stick around and pay the cover charge if you can help it. It's certainly loud enough (and very GOOD - where do they find these acts?) Beers: aaargh, I really appreciate the love, attention and consideration that goes into crafting their beers - especially the way Caribbean and African plants and herbs are incorporated, but honestly I'd much rather drink a Modelo on a hot night, or an Icelandic porter in the depths of winter. Maybe I'm just too basic with regard to my hops-based beverages... But I will keep coming back and continue to work my way through the beer menu until I find something easy enough to drink, not too avant-garde and that pairs well with a pizza! read more

Everything from my previous review stands so that's part of the reason I have to be so critical. What has brought the stars down is that the night after my visit we closed it out - stayed until they were pushing us out at the brewery so when I approached the bartender and asked if he closed me out, he said 'yes, you're all set' and handed me back my card. A few days later I check my bank statement and I see I've been charged almost $36 for the one beer I had!! Of course the first thing I try to do is call the brewery, they don't have a phone number listed!! I go on the actual website, nope no phone number! why?! How do you have a business open this long and not have a number listing. I am not able to get back over there in a timely manner to deal with it in person so I next alert my bank. I'm basically told I have no proof. Needless to say I am pissed now. You may be saying, well it's an honest mistake. NO. We use our debit cards countless times while out and about and very rarely do I (and am sure you reading this) have had an issue like this and to me there is no excuse for screwing up this bad. None. Obviously if I go back at this point (because as of me writing this there still is no phone number listed) it will be my word against theirs and they'll call me crazy. I won't say don't go here. Right up front I was truly impressed with the "Cheers" like atmosphere here. I felt compelled to share my name with the bar tender Wayne. After a five minute chat it felt like I knew Wayne since Moses was a kid. Now when I come back, everyone might know my name (Pun intended)! Now on to the best thing of all "the beer". Im a lager guy so I went for the "Baobiere". It was deliciously smooth and pleasant to my palate. I normally drink my beer fast but this beer was so good that anything faster than a sip would be a crime. After seeing a news feature on Montclair Brewery, I just had to check the place out. I am so glad I ventured out to experience a taste of African brewery mastery. I chose a Friday evening for my 1st visit and unbeknownst to me it was live band night. The band was really good and the vocalist was fabulous. I had to stop many times while writing this review to bop my head to the music; not caring about the neck pain tomorrow. I think I've found a place to relax and unwind from a stressful week in information technology. This place is convenient for me since I live in the next town and I work not too far at Montclair State University. I highly recommend this establishment to get in touch with your inner self and take out that person close to your heart. read more

I've been here a few times and I have to say that I have yet to absolutely love any of the beer. 2 flights was a good sampling, with the Golden Ale the best of them. There are so many great varieties of beers to choose from, and the employees are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to recommendations based on personal preferences. I think this place has a lot of potential and I enjoyed my visit so I'm going to give it 4 stars. A relatively-new addition to Montclair and its an added plus since Montclair doesn't have many restaurants that serve beer. Chill vibes, friendly staff, the brewery itself pretty spacious (although they could probably use more tables and chairs). Menu is on the TV and we got a flight of beers to try (from the flight we ordered of 4 beers, here is the order of what I enjoyed: Golden Buddha, The Havanaugh, Golden Raspberry Framboise, Vally Road Dark Cherry Ale). Although I didn't enjoy the last two as much, they were tasty and had a lot of flavor. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying more beers. Not a huge beer Guy so not very reliable here although I can tell you I went with some buddies and the reviews were mixed, definitely slanting towards "interesting" rather than "awesome." When's on a night when they had open mic night for people to do stand up, read poetry, play music. It was a cool atmosphere as there were lots of people there supporting their friends family but the outside literally stinks. It smells terrible. And it permeates the food and the beer and the night in general. And that's outside. Inside, it looks like they have a bar inside a storage facility that is not particularly clean, even for a storage facility. It seems to me that one or two days of really good hard cleaning would make that entire place so much more appealing. It's gross and I don't think I'll go back because of that and it's a shame because it's an amazing location that does cool things marred by a lack of cleanliness and organization. read more

Here with some friends. This is my first time but it won't be my last. They have live music and a great beer selection. If you're looking for to go beers they offer those as well which is nice. The parking is lacking but you can find something within one block of the brewery. They outside is really nice and they also have indoor seating as well. Place is a dump. Owners are dishonest. Called establishment to see if their Oktoberfest was still on, specifically if bands were playing. It was a drizzly day, but was told it was not raining there. Regardless, we were told that the entire rear yard was covered with a tent and that the bands would play. Took a chance and went; place was a ghost town, they put up a few small tents, and no band. They had the nerve to charge more if you want to stay under the main tent! Ridiculous! read more

This pet friendly brewery was a good time this Saturday afternoon. They allow pups inside and outside and also have water bowls available. We ordered a variety of beer from Belgium's, to pale ales and IPAs to alcohol free drinks. Overall the beers were okay, nothing fantastic but not terrible. The indoor area looks nice but some of the chairs could use new cushions. The pillows and cushions were wrapped in plastic and had no give. Unfortunately it was quite uncomfortable. There is also an outdoor area. There was a private event in the tent area but there were still plenty of of other seats. We preferred sitting inside since it was air conditioned and very hot out side. We'll definitely be back to hang out at a local brewery but hope they make some updates. read more

The beer is middle-of-the-road, not great but not bad. That was the highlight of my experience at Montclair Brewery. The staff was as helpful and knowledgable as an overseas call center. Untrained, unfriendly, could not be bothered and had no idea about the beer she was serving. The seating area is a collection of tattered wooden outdoor benches with very uncomfortable, mismatched, dirty cushions. The owner must have picked-up discarded items left as curbside trash. We were absolutely repulsed and felt dirty having sat for a moment. Montclair Brewery is pretty sketchy from the outside and it gets even sketchier when you enter. Ordered 2 beers here and they pumped syrup into a plastic cup and then poured a beer into it. What kind of self respecting brewery uses SYRUP PUMPS to flavor their beer. They also charged me $9 for each beer. If you're gonna charge that much, don't serve me a syrup filled beer in a plastic cup. Place is also disgustingly dirty. No tasters. First drink (seltzer) was flat. Second drink (another seltzer) was overly sweet. Neither tasted good. Bar was crowded full of stuff. Signs, advertisements, merch, the tip jar, and more, which made sitting at it unpleasant. To sit outside (in the parking lot?) and enjoy the "live music" there was a $10 cover charge. Lol. read more
