The owner said she won't get a credit for it so she can't replace the wine or credit me. Like what? I'll never get over this. People need to know this. I've posted 2 yelp reviews in my life and all due to experiences the world needs to know about. This is insanity. This wine smells like rotten apples and turpentine.

Now, once again, I find myself straying... sorry River Edge but Totowa's making me weak in the knees. Lots of aisles. Lots of product on those shelves. Lots of space between the rows so you and your fellow shoppers aren't at risk of bumping into each other with your carts. If you've been to a Total Wines before - you know how it goes... they're usually the size of an old Toys R Us but aimed at adults looking to waste, I mean spend, money on booze (or cigars, which seem to have a serious fanbase the few times I've been here). I've found some new/unique imported beers as well as a few interesting organic wines at this location that I never saw at their other stores. [Every Total Wines location is a bit of a drive for me but worth the mileage.]

The wine selection here is pretty decent and they have a wide array of six-packs. In addition to the standard liquor offerings, pilgrim also sells lottery tickets and cigars. As a cigar smoker, I was pretty impressed with their selection. At the same time you wonder how long those Ashtons and Cohibas have actually been sitting in their case. The guys who run the store are friendly, and I'm pretty sure they will sell you a case of beer from the back even though they only display six packs up front. That said, I would put Pilgrim's prices a little on the high end. If I'm looking for a case of beer, I usually head to Home Liquors on Bloomfield Ave. in Verona (5 minutes away) because their selection and prices are not half bad.

Checkout was quick and easy, and I learned they have a rewards program you can sign up for using your phone number. Apparently customer service here now means: ignore the customer, stare at your phone, give attitude…read morewhen somebody asks you a question, and then act shocked when people complain about it. A few weeks ago, I had an absolutely ridiculous interaction with the employee with the purple braids. I said nothing because I figured, alright, maybe she woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Everybody gets one bad day. Then I came back today and watched her go at it with an Uber driver. So congratulations -- now we can officially retire the "bad day" excuse. This is apparently just how she behaves. My own experience was almost comedy. I was trying to ask her a simple question while she was completely focused on her phone. She had her back turned, so naturally I walked over to get her attention. Suddenly I get: "DON'T APPROACH ME FROM BEHIND." Excuse me? Lady, this is a STORE. I'm a customer. I'm trying to ask you a question, not sneak into Fort Knox. Maybe put the phone down for thirty seconds, look around, and realize you're actually at work. Today was even better. Another argument, this time with an Uber driver, and then afterward she's making comments to another employee like she just won some championship in bad customer service. At this point, management needs to wake up. Because when the same employee keeps having confrontations with customers and delivery drivers, particularly Latino people from what I have personally witnessed, somebody eventually is going to start asking much more serious questions about why there seems to be a pattern. I'm not claiming to know what is going through her head. I don't need to. I'm reviewing what I can actually SEE. And what I see is an employee who seems way too comfortable being disrespectful to people while representing somebody else's business. Here's some free New Jersey business advice: If every other customer is supposedly the problem, eventually maybe the customer isn't the problem. One confrontation? Maybe a misunderstanding. Two? Interesting. Keep watching the same behavior happen over and over? Now management owns the problem too, because they know about it and continue allowing it. This isn't a nightclub bouncer position. Nobody came here to fight with an employee. People are trying to shop, pick up deliveries, ask questions, and leave. Put the phone away. Drop the attitude. Do the job. And management: handle your employee before she turns a basic customer-service problem into something your corporate office has to explain later.
