Porta is a decent choice in Montclair. Great for various sized parties, but highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time if you plan on going on the weekend. Let's talk about food. I would give this place five stars, but the food is honestly hit or miss. Hits for me are the Ricotta and Bread which is so so yummy, the Bibb Salad, and the Winter Risotto. The first two have sold out on separate visits, and understand so. Things I had that were just okay include the Mozzarella and Bread and the Gorgonzootch. The mozzarella while fresh lacked flavor and the Gorgonzootch pasta was undercooked. Gelato is also okay, but nothing special. I also had the Chocolate Budino which is somewhere between a hit and okay. It was good, but I don't know if I'd get it again. Misses for me unfortunately are the Spring Risotto which lacked the flavor of the Winter and the White Walker Pizza. The Spring Risotto would be better if the onion pieces had been well cooked and there was something to pair the lemon flavor. The White Walker Pizza had a good crust, but the broccoli wasn't cooked properly and the cheese was just me. I would have given them three stars, but service is good and so are the cocktails. They had a drag show on Saturday when I went which I loved. I think they do have some amazing items, just not everything. I also felt the quality of food went down when they got busy. Terrible experience with the bartenders (Man w/manbun and female in the photo). We just tried to order - the 2 bartenders in the photo ignored us (literally everyone in the left corner towards the back of the bar). So this was my first time coming here Saturday night with a friend and more than likely my last. The bar itself is great - music was pretty good and so we went to order drinks. Literally standing there for about 20 mins - the only 2 bartenders in the photo at that time literally ignored one entire section the whole night. Everyone was casual- no one caused a scene- no one appeared to be drunk or unruly so I could not for the life of me understand how as a BARTENDER when it is your JOB to serve drinks and make the bar MONEY, you intentionally IGNORE an entire section the whole night. There was a nice young guy patiently waiting to be served, so I even tried to get the gentleman's (bartender with the man bun in the photo's) attention, only with him to respond/ yell with "IM BUSY!" Never again - Great place- GREAT vibes! TERRIBLE BARTENDERS. FYI: There was another guy (a third taller gentleman on the other side of guy with manbun ) that eventually came behind the bar to serve drinks - he was AWESOME! Booked a family party (38 people) for a birthday party on an early Saturday night. Will caveat I did preorder all the food in advance to make it easier on the kitchen. But the minute we walked in our servers Maggie and Savannah were wonderful, organized and patient with my rambunctious family. They somehow managed to stay on top of the extra orders and kept me posted on time without being obtrusive. We were filled with anticipation as we visited on a quiet Saturday night of Memorial. Day weekend. Having previously enjoyed the Asbury Park location, we were excited. Service- The service, unfortunately, was far from satisfactory, leaving us quite disappointed. I had made reservations and upon arrival, my friend had arrived first and was seated. Despite repeatedly mentioning my name and the fact that we were already checked in, the staff couldn't locate our reservation. Eventually, we were seated. Then it just gets worse and worse. We waited almost 30 minutes for the first round of drinks. Two belvedere martinis were asked for; 15 minutes after we placed the drink order, the server came over and asked whether we wanted dirty martinis. We said no AGAIN. Another 15 minutes passed, and the martinis came, and they were dirty. The server did not come back to check on us, so I went to the bar to ask them to remake them. They did and tasted ok; however, they only filled up the martini glasses halfway. The two other cocktails were from their cocktail list and all sugar- such a shame. Our server did not pay attention to us at all; although she was nice, she just did not seem attentive. The music was so loud there that it was important to listen carefully to the customers' requests. Food- The food was very good! We had the cantaloupe cucumber salad- (highly recommended), meatballs (very good- the sauce was good), orecchiette with sausage (al dente and just a little spice), and two pizzas- one pepperoni and one meatball (the crust was good). We did plan on ordering dessert, but we didn't even have a chance to tell the server- she instead threw two to-go boxes on our table on top of my friend's glasses and then reappeared with the check. Came in today with a group of 5 for brunch. Overall was good. Server was super nice and nice atmosphere. The drink glasses are small for water and otherwise (non alcoholic not sure about alcohol). We order a bunch of things for the table to share. We got the meat and cheese platter and definitely not worth it. We got the meatballs and they were delicious. Then we had two pizzas and two pastas. We had the margheritta and the carbonera pizza and they were both really good especially the later. We had the Caccio e Pepe and it wasn't very good. Then the pomodoro and that was much better. We are obsessed with this pizza! We have been looking for really good Neapolitan pizza ever since moving to New Jersey, and this is it! We also love their grilled artichokes, pasta, and incredible desserts. On top of loving the food, the ambience of the restaurant is wonderful and wheelchair accessible. We've also picked up pizza to bring home, and it toast up beautifully, and even reheats very well a couple of days later. This is definitely our new favorite spot! Came here for brunch having heard great things about the pizza. But even though there were only three other small parties in the restaurant at the time, it took over an hour to get the pizza. We had also ordered the mozzarella as an appetizer, but that didn't come out until after the pizzas did. And even then, the mozzarella was tough and the olive oil was rancid. We had ordered three pizzas and one came out 30 minutes before the rest, which made for a bit of an awkward situation. It was also difficult to get the server's attention when we were having issues with the order. It was nice that they comp'ed the appetizer, but it was still not a great dining experience. I'm a savvy Porta veteran, having been to both the Jersey City and Asbury Park locations before. The pizza is very tasty, and the two aforementioned locations juggle an interesting balancing act between a bougie wood-fired Neapolitan pizzeria and a nightclub (my understanding is that they both literally are nightclubs when the sun goes down). This location is a little different from its predecessors. For one, the ceiling isn't nearly as high and the outdoor seating options are more limited - understandably so. You don't have nearly the room to play with on Bloomfield Ave as you do a block or two from the Asbury boardwalk. That's not to say that the space is unpleasant; far from it. It's pleasant and inviting, even if it's arguably not quite as hip as its siblings. My noble chum and I stopped by for lunch on a recent Saturday afternoon. There were a few occupied tables, but we were there pretty early and had the place pretty much to ourselves. Everyone we interacted with was very friendly and professional, and that's been true at all three locations. Props to their HR team (not sure if restaurants have HR teams). Both of us decided to be a little naughty and went for some classic brunch cocktails, mimosa for her, bellini for me (both $8). My chum confirmed the inclusion of pulp in the mimosa, so I'm glad I opted for a drink that I didn't have to eat half of. The bellini was good, though not the best I've had, which coincidentally was down the street in Bloomfield at Blue Steel. It didn't have quite the zip as that one, but Blue Steel has some of the best cocktails in the area, so it might not be a fair comp. At my strong urging, we ordered the fresh mozzarella ($10) with a side of bread ($2 extra). It is a delight, and I am mystified that every pizza/Italian restaurant doesn't do this. I would pay for this on the table automatically in lieu of standard bread/butter (which I'm definitely not opposed to either). Whether she wasn't as enthused as I was or because she was responsibly monitoring her caloric consumption, my noble chum let me have roughly 70% of this app, which was fine by me. Some of the brunch options looked mighty tempting, but when in Rome, I think you have a moral obligation to go with the pizza. Is it the best I've had? No, but it's solidly above average and I'd have no problem ordering it again. As a Neapolitan style pizza, the cheese is by definition not as prominent of a star as it is with other types, but the mozzarella still stands out here - not surprising given the aforementioned app. The sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and tomato-ey and the crust is airy and lightly burned - every part of the pizza does its part. So why can't I go full five stars here? The service was really excellent in almost every aspect, but there's a price gouging element that rubbed me the wrong way. First, the bread for the mozzarella app is an extra $2. I can't imagine ordering that dish without the bread, so it feels like it's just a way to tack onto the bill. The other issue was a bit of mild deception on the part of the waiter. My chum got a calzone and requested a little marinara sauce on the side. It was immediately brought out, but no mention was made of the fact that we were charged an extra $1 for that. It was literally just a little container of marinara. Not only do I not think there's a need to charge for what amounts to a few extra dollops of a condiment, but the waiter absolutely should have mentioned the additional cost. Would it have changed her mind? No idea, but she deserves to know before we're looking at the bill in confusion. Beyond that though, we really liked the waiter, who good-naturedly joked with us throughout the adventure and was very accessible. I've gone on the record many times that I think Montclair is one of the most overrated food towns in the area. They ARE starting to climb back up to respectability though, and Porta is a part of that progress. But next time we go, we're going to have to apparently smuggle in some marinara. read more

I ordered the Monday night in the single portion, gnocchi was cooked perfectly, vodka sauce was fresh and on the more tart side but I enjoyed it. The girls and I got together to try this new restaurant. When I arrived I was lucky to find parking in the lower parking lot nearby. When I walked in, it was a packed house. I found my party and sat. Brittany was our server and she was cool, she was just MIA a lot through the night. I started with a red wine carafe that I split with one of the girls. The wine wasn't bad. For dinner I got the vegan sausage pizza and it looked pretty good when it came out. The problem was it wasn't cooked good. It was very wet when I picked it up. It pretty much fell apart and I couldn't eat the crust because it was burnt. One of the girls got the octopus and she said it was tough and one other girl got pasta and she said it was dry. Porta is in a good location on Bloomfield Ave that allows for street parking or parking deck options. The space is modern-chic yet somewhat small for the atmosphere and vibe it will attract. it gives a FiDi hangout type feel. I can see them eventually having to limit capacity in some form. There is also security to help regulate patrons that think they are down at the shore. The pizza was decent but I had higher expectations based on the buzz. Service was a bit slow but the restaurant was extremely busy. Despite the minor kinks, I had an absolute blast! The dj was great, drinks were awesome, and the staff was pleasant under pressure. Porta drew a diverse crowd with fun for all ages (young, college crowd and mature), different races, with a nice male/female/they ratio. The after hours crowd was very non pretentious, friendly to chat and open to dance with strangers, everyone was simply looking to have a good time. You could come alone to chill at the bar or in a group. All of us are in the industry so we understand a busy night however the service provided was rude, condescending & a bit misogynistic. Very rude bar team, waited almost 10 mins while guests after us were taken care of. The bartender w red hair made direct eye contact twice yet wouldn't acknowledge us. Then the other bartender got to us & when I asked if they had mezcal he laughed & said "no babe we don't" I asked for 2 martinis & he cut me off & said no specialty cocktails after 10 pm so I said no old fashioned then right & he said "no I just said that, vodka pineapple gin & tonic that kinda thing sweetie". Where to begin. First our waiter was super nice and accommodating. I have a dairy allergy and knew that Porta had dairy free/vegan options. I went to order a pizza and asked for vegan cheese to be added to it. Our waiter informed me that it was not something could be done. For context, I have dined at Porta before and been able to get vegan cheese on my pizza. I explained that I have an allergy and wasn't trying to be difficult but would really like to eat here. The waiter went to ask the Head Chef and the Manager what could be done. Turns out that both the Head Chef and the Manager said no. NO?! WHAT?! It was as simple as "please do not put regular cheese on this pizza and put vegan cheese on it" - someone tell me where the complication is? I even told them I have done it here before and I was told that the Head Chef does not make adjustments to the menu, he only leaves things off. That is the craziest thing I have ever heard. You can't accommodate this simple request in order to assist with an allergy? WOW. My only option was to have a pizza with no cheese on it and a side of vegan cheese. COLD. Vegan cheese brought to my table with the pizza as a "side" that I had to add on myself. It was just not enjoyable at all. Thank god my drink was good. Even the bread in the beginning was cold. OH and they charge for EVERYTHING. Bread? CHARGE. Side of vegan cheese? CHARGE. Overall, great atmosphere and good drinks but if you have an allergy or try to ask for something specific, I would recommend going somewhere else. Before I even left the restaurant, I look at my friend and said "I will never dine here again" - Porta should really look inward at the stupidity of their Head Chef and Manager because they are going to continue to lose business this way. Ambience is a good replication of the Asbury site, which I believe is the original location. Pizza was disappointing. Crust was undercooked. Friends later told me that they had to request a well done crust and were told the crust already was well done. They insisted and the pizzas went back into the oven/were remade. When I last ate in the Asbury location a few months ago, they also had an undercooked crust - that was the first time I ever experienced that. The crust had always been crisp. Owner should revisit the timing, keep a closer eye on the ovens. Service in Montclair was friendly but not timely. There was an event occurring at the same time we were seated.
