Yesterday we there to celebrate our career and life milestones. proud to say through hard work and due diligence, we are successful career women. one of us born and raised in Montclair and frequent many restaurants in the area ,but this was the first ever level of obvious uncomfortableness we felt from and server. We were at the bar and it doesn't take much for a smile and a good welcoming vibe, which we felt none once Scott approached the bar . He was quite friendly with everyone else perhaps they were regulars or perhaps he wanted to insure we weren't trying to be . Nonetheless his lack of attention, is tracking him down to place our order , his coldness was pretty evident . But I won't take away from Sam natural genuine spirit - thank you ©). Hope Scott was training you . I also mentioned to Scott that the shrimp for the paella was stale and had a smell to it. Since he never came back to us to check in on us once we received our meal. He just gave a blank stare and said ok with no solution or resolution or apology. I simply said pass the work along back there especially if they plan on serving more. I get it Scott maybe you just didn't want us there . But luckily we can afford over priced places like this so wasn't looking for a free meal. We were there for my 50th birthday. we were seated at a high top in the bar area. It was crowded and we were hoping to be in the main dining area since we made reservations and made them aware of the milestone birthday. My oysters were very good, I loved the octopus and the spaghetti lobster. The food was very good. Service was pretty slow. Had to ask for drinks a few times, napkins and so on. For appetizer i got the charred octopus. Very small portion and too much cream sauce. For my entree i got the scallops with lentils and pieces of crispy pork belly. The seafood itself here was very fresh and well prepared. The accompanying veg and complements on each plate were more hit-or-miss. Some were too salty or rich, vs the main ingredient. The Sunday brunch food and service were top notch. We came for my sisters birthday and from the start the mimosas were a hit. We had: Crab cocktail + chat grilled oyster apps Shrimp & grits, crossaint French toast, Tacos (steak + fish), bacon and truffle fries mains + sides. Chocolate mousse and apple tart for dessert. But, it's bar tender is inexperienced; I complained my old fashion was watery, instead of address my concerns, he said as matter of factly that he poured 2oz in my cocktail, as if how dare I even asked. To give the bar tender credit, he did came over to offer me another drink on the house, but damage was done, too late. Anyway, the roasted oyster is tasted average with an escargot source, nothing special. Otopus is average, tender enough but the sauce took away the flavor. Good food and ambiance but service was extremely poor. Not so much the waiter but more so the manager Chris who came across very rude and condescending. Our party of five asked for separate checks so that we wouldn't have to waste time at the table calculating who ordered what. The manager Chris rudely shared that he could not provide an accommodation even after I shared with him that I had been there several times before and never had an issue with getting separate checks! I grew up in Montclair and have been to Halcyon multiple times, and each time that I've gone in the past with a large party the waitress or waiter has given us all separate checks without any issue. Not sure how they did it but it was done nonetheless. The manager Chris basically called me a liar and didn't offer any apology or any alternative solution. He has zero customer service skills and someone should explain to him that it's not so much what you say but the way you talk to people that makes all the difference in their experience. The Halcyon owners should really consider re-training him. Additionally my friend looked up reviews on other platforms and found out there have been other complaints about him as well. Unacceptable behavior. I will not be returning again. And furthermore I will be sharing my experience with my multiple networks so that they are aware as well. There are simply too many amazing eating options available in Montclair for this establishment to think they can get away with treating people like this. Shameful. read more

I'll preface this by saying I worked private parties here on a few occasions and used to wait tables at Egan and Sons right next door (same owners). The executive chef, Sam, is very talented and puts a lot of pride into the seafood cuisine and the presentation. On a side note, I know they get at least 2 or 3 fresh deliveries a week. The decor here is beautiful. The owners put a lot of work into it and it really paid off. This goes for downstairs and the upstairs lounge area. One of my favorite things about Halcyon was the brunch, but they stopped doing it. I wish they would bring it back. Still, this is a great place to go for dinner, drinks, or for a private party in the upstairs lounge. If there is a wait next door at Egan's, Halcyon is a great alternative. Although a little pricier than Egan's, not everyone in your party necessarily has to like seafood. Last I knew, they had steak and burger options as well to accommodate the non-seafood eaters. read more

Sunday, funday for brunch with family and friends. We had brunch at Halcyon. I have been here for drinks but not for dining, because it seems to be a bit pricey. The drinks were delish and our server/manager/bartender Chris was providing us with 5 star service from beginning to end. He is a true professional and made our experience simply amazing. Truly that high-touch customer service experience that I look for when dining out. Highly recommend and this is now one of my fave places. Check out the crab cocktail for an appetizer! Beautiful restaurant lots of seafood to choose from the crab cake is delicious and we enjoyed the salmon. Everything was cooked very well. It is a little pricey more of a celebration restaurant. They have a full bar I've been there for brunch. I've been there for lunch. I've been there for dinner. Everything is always presented well. The service is very good. You definitely need to make a reservation it does get very busy give it a try I think you might like it there is parking in the back if there is no parking on the street same owners as Egan's The atmosphere and ambience is very nice. They also have a very nice Wine list. Try to go here during the week when it's less crowded. You won't be disappointed. read more

I first came to this restaurant last summer and the food was delicious. I came back a second time around and the food was even better! The scallops dish used to come in a corn cream sauce, but this new take on the dish is much more flavorful and healthier. The octopus was great and had a nice char. I went with a friend tonight. It was my second visit to this restaurant. We ordered the blackened catfish and some type of lamb pasta dish. While the catfish was palatable; the lamb dish was absolutely disgusting. Our margaritas were watered down and the service was sub par. The restaurant was half full yet the meal took an hour and a 1/2 to get to the table. Wow what a disappointment. Do yourself a favor and skip this restaurant. I will preface my review by saying I've been once and it was for brunch. I didn't really think they're brunch was anything to write home about. I had the breakfast tacos. They were little (little like the corn tortillas from the supermarket)and honestly tasted a little bland. Even the side of guacamole lacked salt and lime. It really was just smashed avocados. For $16, it's honestly not worth it. I understand trying to keep the prices competitive with similar spots around town, but if that's the case, make these tacos bigger--and make them tastier. WOW! THIS IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST MEAL I HAVE EVER HAD. We started with the oysters as an appetizer. I haven't liked oysters before but this is the first time I actually loved the oysters. They were perfect. We had the West - Kusshi and East - Hollywood oysters. Next we had our entrees, I ordered the salmon nicoise which I ordered medium and it was just so amazing. Everything was so good and the meal didn't feel heavy. The sauce included was soooooooo good! I loved every single bite. For dessert, we ordered the flourless chocolate cake which again was amazing. The warm cake with the vanilla ice cream is just a combination you can't beat. We also ordered drinks which included the backgreen made with gin which was very good and my boyfriend ordered the east meets west made with whiskey which he also enjoyed. My family decided to come here on a Sunday evening for my sister in laws birthday. We had a 2 month old baby with us and they were more than willing to accommodate. Appetizers: We had the kingfisher which had an assortment of different items like shrimp cocktail, oysters and lobster. Everything was fresh. We also ordered a flatbread pizza. This was horrible. It was very soggy and Tasted like if it was heated up in a microwave. I ordered a date special which was bacon wrapped around a date in tomato sauce. This was my favorite item we ordered. The combination was fantastic and was very tasty. Entrees: We ordered the paella which had really fresh jumbo scallops. On to the downside. The grilled lobster was super dry and had no taste what's so ever. Also I personally ordered the filet mignon. I ordered this medium well and they gave it to me raw like I mean completely raw. My husband whom usually eats medium rare even said it was too much for him. So we sent it back to Cook a little more and they brought it back very well done. The first few years after it opened it was a four star experience (for New Jersey). The paella was one of the great bites of food in the area. The bar was fantastic. The staff was fun. I'm not sure how these things happen but it now seems like it's operating on location and memory. The paella (and I've tried more than once) is typical dry American rice and small pieces of seafood. The bar is too busy to serve you. The staff is surly. Those may be COVID-related staffing issues. It's still pretty space. But if you manage to get a parking spot over there you may as well go to Egan's. It seems like they're at least trying. With all the good new (and old) places in the area, I'll just skip it altogether. read more

Do not sleep on this place!!! I wasn't sure what to expect when my sister-in-law suggested coming here for dinner, but after my experience I can say that I'm definitely a fan. Right when you walk in, you're overwhelmed by the trendy decor and killer atmosphere. We decided to split a bunch of appetizers for dinner since everything looked amazing and we weren't sure what to get. We ended up splitting the calamari, tacos (2 steak and 2 fish, crab cake, truffle fries, octopus and burrata. The calamari, burrata, and truffle fries definitely stole the show. They were extremely well prepared and very fresh. The tacos were the only thing that were a little disappointing. At $7 per taco I was expected to be wowed, but they were just standard tacos (fresh ingredients yes, but nothing to make you say "woah, you have to try these"). All in all, I would definitely go back. There were so many good things on the menu still left to try and their cocktail list looked amazing as well! read more

This place is a rip off. Their lounge area is beautiful don't get me wrong but their drink menu is incredibly overpriced. They charge $17 for a glass of wine that costs $20 for a whole bottle. You don't even pay those prices in high class steak houses. Don't waste your time they will probably charge you $15 for a glass of tap water. I am editing this review due to the fact we ordered Jameson all night and by the third drink they upped the charge and said it was due to ice. I get it's their "measuring" guidelines but it was handled incorrectly. We asked to speak to a manager for pure principal and she told us to "read what it says" on our bill which is completely inappropriate for a manager to say to a customer. I went here Saturday night for a friend's birthday. His wife threw him a surprise party, he had no clue that many of us would be there. Halcyon has a nice lounge area upstairs which is where we were. There are tables upstairs along the windows, but for the most part it is a pretty open area which is good for small parties. There is also a small bar so drinks are covered. The music and lighting give it a club/lounge feel which it essentially is upstairs. The staff were extremely friendly and went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. If I lived in New Jersey I'd definitely make come more often. Based on the food we were served I'm sure dinner here must be awesome.
